Last Hope

Written By MariannS, Maryland on Sunday, September 20, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this for a friend who is very hard of hearing and is partially blind. It's the last hope for her to be able to watch TV or listen to music and to avoid further isolation. She's been using it for two weeks and seems to be feeling pretty positive about it. She is still trying it out. I think the key if we can adjust the device's fine-tuning capabilities to the precise settings that will work for her specific hearing loss. It's a bit of hit or miss (trying different variations). The instructions are helpful and pretty clear for set up but I wish they gave a little more direction about the fine-tuning possibilities. Mostly I would change a setting and she'd listen for a little while and say yes or no until we got to a setting that seemed to work. I had previously purchased the Sennheiser wireless headphones for her (before I discovered this product) and she said that she couldn't really make out what people were saying. I know from owning multiple Sennheiser products that they are an excellent brand and the 840S seems to be no exception. It is easy to set up and I think it is well worth the money - if it works for your specific needs. I bought it from Crutchfield because I know they care about their customer satisfaction and with their 60 day return policy, my friend would have a chance to try it out to make sure it works for her.

Pros: Excellent quality, clear directions, easy to use. Well designed.

Cons: The fine-tuning adjustments to work with a person's specific hearing needs could be clearer and more definitive. It feels a bit of "hit or miss" about expections.

A very good product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product works very well and is easy to set up. A great plus is that it works with my several other Sennheiser RS 130 which I have on several TV sets in my house and all I have to do is carry the loop with me when shifting areas.

Pros: High quality and easy set up.

Cons: Setting it up for my hearing aids is requiring several trips to my audiologist to get them to work properly.

Great Product

Does everything well. It now links to my hearing aids but I need to have them adjusted for it to be perfect for me. A further report will be forthcoming when that is completed.

Works Great

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sennheiser 840S works great for my situation. I am able to use my own headphones, adjust to my own volume while watching TV with others, and have a wireless connection to the TV. I can move around, even go to a different floor and still hear the TV. The transmitter can be adjusted for either stereo or mono, which is helpful for people who are deaf in one ear. There are also adjustments for balance, speech tones, and treble. The transmitter sits by the TV and is hardly noticeable. I wear the receiver around my neck when viewing TV. The receiver is easily stored in the transmitter and is charged when not being used. I am very happy with the Sennheiser 840S with one exception, noted below under "Cons".

Pros: Small and discrete. Great sound quality. Stereo to Mono adjustment. Balance and tone adjustable.

Cons: The transmitter connects to the TV using analog RCA output. Most modern TVs, audio receivers use digital output nowadays. I was lucky in that our TV in the living room had the RCA connectors. However, our theater system downstairs has only digital output and after many hours we gave up trying to find a way to hook up the Sennheiser down there. The headphone jack or microphone connection options are not desirable. If the Sennheiser 840S ever includes a digital input, I'll purchase another one.

Watching TV with my wife

Written By JohnR, California on Sunday, February 15, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this for my wife to use when we watch TV/DVD/Etc. together. Her hearing is starting to fail, so for her to hear some dialog (mostly British accents) she found it necessary to have the volume so loud that I could not stay in the same room. With this product we can keep the speaker volume at a comfortable level for me, while she can set her volume to her own liking. Works great. Only downside is that it tends to isolate her a bit. With her earphones on she can not hear other conversation in the room very well.

Pros: East to set up. Great range. Individual volume control. Works well for audio from TV/DVD/Etc...

Cons: As any earphone/ear-bud will do, it masks out sounds other than those coming through the earphones/ear-buds.

Final Solution

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My 81 year old Father is extremely hard of hearing...nerve damage caused total loss of hearing in one ear and greatly reduced in the other. He has tried many wireless head phones over the years, which get heavy and break over long periods of prolonged use. He found a set of wired Bose headphones that he really liked, and I thought there were products that would be an any easy hook up so he could used them, but it did not turn out that way. This product finally filled the bill. He now has light weight, over the ear, high quality head phones that help him hear much more clearly and the extra setting to make the spoken words clearer, was a pleasant additional plus to this purchase. He's very hard to satisfy, but seem pleased with this system, which makes me relieved.

Pros: 60 day return policy...for a very fussy Octogenarian.

Cons: A little more expensive than other sights, but the return policy made the difference.

This is great!

This is great for watching TV. It allows the user to connect whatever ear bud or head phone that is desired. IMHO ear buds are more comfortable for watching TV, as head phones get tiresome after a few hours.

Excellent product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to set up and easy to use. I have more hearing loss in one ear than the other, so I really like the balance setting feature. Even with hearing aids, I used to miss words when watching TV and as a result--miss most of the enjoyment. Now I hear every single word including the whispers. Amazing!!!

Pros: Excellent sound. Great range (I can go to the other room and this thing doesn't skip a beat).

Cons: I haven't encountered any yet.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I do not wear hearing aids just can't understand what people are saying sometimes. Hooked it up to the direct tv receiver, that way I can mute the tv and not bother anyone else. Use headphones that hurt my ears after awhile will try ear buds later.

Pros: Easy to set up, sounds great with the st mode on.

Cons: The belt hook is not very dependable wont stay on, just use the neck cord.

Assistance Hearing TV

Written By Bob, Palm Desert, CA on Tuesday, January 07, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product is great. Now others in the room don't have to be 'blasted with high volume on the TV so I can hear. The Sennheiser with ear buds is great. Only issue is trying to hear others when they want to talk to me, they have to motion to me and then I remove one of the buds and all is GOOD. A great purchase.

Pros: Excellent hearing assistance for watching TV with others that don't have hearing deficit.

Cons: Instructions for installation were not detailed enough for me.

Works amazing well

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Sennheiser SET 840S with some initial concern about audio quality. That concern has now been put to rest as the audio quality is excellent. I have a high frequency hearing loss. Our big screen TV and large speaker audio system is in a 25 x 40' room with 19' ceiling. Despite having invested a significant amount of cash in the audio system, voices are often difficult to understand. The Sennheiser has rectified that issue. I am amazed at the additional sounds that I was unable to appreciate before the purchase.

Pros: Clear and accurate sound reproduction. For the most part, any delay in signal vs speaker output is not appreciable and does not result in noticeable echo.

Cons: The set can only access analog outputs, so my connection point is the analog outputs on the cable box - this setup allows speaker output as well as a signal from the Sennheiser transmitter. However, Apple TV only outputs digital signals, forcing me to connect the Sennheiser transmitter at the amp's headphone jack when the selected source is the Apple TV. That subsequently disables speaker output. If the Sennheiser transmitter included a digital input, that issue would not exist.

High Quality

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Glad I picked this over TV ears. I read that the TV ears were poor quality. This product is high quality. Even the box it came in was very well engineered. I like the fact that I can use my own ear phones or buds. I am very satisfied.

Pros: Quality, ease of use, ability to use my own ear phones or buds

Cons: If you pause the sound for too long it gives you an annoying beep.

Very Nice...Get One

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a quality product from what I can tell so far. Have had it for about 3 weeks. I am not hard of hearing, but I bought this because I did not want to wake my neighbor with my TV (we have very thin walls). I wanted something I could use in bed and this was the only unit I found where you can plug your own headset in. So I bought a "headband" head set which is really nice to use with one's head on the pillow because the speakers are flat. Anyways, this unit has the sound adjustment right there at your fingertips, which is fantastic.

What I really love is that I can plug it into the back of my cable box, rather than the back of the TV (how hard is that to reach!). I can then just put the TV on mute and I will only hear from my headset-no sound in the room. If I want to use the TV's external speaker, all I have to do is un-mute the TV. Easy to recharge. The customer service at Sennhauser is good too. They counseled me as to which unit to get. I got the one that goes thru walls and its great because if I want to walk around I can still hear the TV. This will also work with my computer or boom box though I haven't tried it yet. It comes with options for attaching to your sound making device including you can just place a little microphone near the devices speaker.

Buy this thing. At a time when its hard to find quality, this has it. It is intelligently made.

Pros: Comfortable, easy to install, easy to control, easy to charge, and the sound is fine-quality probably depends on your own headset

Cons: Maybe pricey, but worth it to me.

Sennheiser 840 S is the best TV listning system I've used in 20 years.

Written By Maurice, Hailey, Idaho on Sunday, August 25, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've used every system on the market for the last 20 years. From Sony to the as seen on TV listening ears, the Sennheiser SET 840 S allows you to use your own headset or ear plugs like I use and it works wherever I am in the house or garage. I took it out of the box and plugged it in over night when it arrived and the next morning I took it off the charging cradle and plugged in my ear plugs and pushed the on button and started right up and stayed charged all day. The sound is so clear that my family is now asking me what was just said on the TV. How cool is that.

Pros: Lasts all day. Works anywhere in the house if I need to walk away from the TV. Clearest sound ever. Lightweight. Convenient.

Cons: I'd like to see a cradle developed which could hold more units (3-5) which connect to the same TV so we could share them with friends. They just bring their own ear plugs.

Best One I Every Had!

Pros: Easy connection, great sound

Sennheiser SET 840-S

Written By Ken, Thousand Oaks, CA on Friday, February 01, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm using this device with Phonak hearing aids. It was necessary for me to go to the audiologist and add a setting on my hearing aids, in order to use the 840-S, but having done that, it works perfectly. The 840-S uses a T-coil principle rather than bluetooth, which gives it a shorter, but adequate range for TV watching. It makes a real difference. Phonak has a similar device that uses bluetooth, and has a greater range, but it costs more than this item. I don't think I would use more range than I have. Bluetooth, however, would let me use the device in the car to receive phone calls. The handling of the order by Crutchfield was excellent.

I have both the 840 TV and the 840 S. They are both awesome.

Pros: Great sound Best thing on the market even with the cons below. I would buy them again.

Cons: PRICE They Lose sound if you go out of the room. The 840TV unit RX has a better range than the 840S..Both units drop the sound for about a millisecond for no apparent reason.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We LOVE this product! we've been looking for a long time for something to allow one of us to listen to the tv while the other is sleeping/talking on the phone, and this is it! we tried a bluetooth, but that didn't have the range this does. I love that you can wear it around your neck and use your own headphones. i can walk into most rooms of our house, which is spread out and a tri-level and only the furthest corner or behind a double set of walls where it might not work. even works outside around the perimeter of the house.

Pros: range, cord around neck, use own headphones

Cons: it might have it, but i haven't found it yet, but i would like a spare battery i could recharge while using the other one - just don't know if manufacturer makes one; crutchfield doesn't offer it.; price a little high, but really worth it!

TV Hearing Aid

Written By F75, Temecula, CA on Wednesday, April 25, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Conceptually, a nice design. Components seem well made. Variables to enhance speech recognition are impressive. However, use with a BTE hearing aid is cumbersome. Using the induction loop in conjunction with the hearing aid tellecoil works but the sound quality is less than desirable. (Using the same hearing aid telecoil coil with my cell/land line phones provides very good sound quality.) For this combination to work at all requires almost max volume from the receiver and there is noticeable variation in sound volume over time. It waxes and wanes. When I plug a Sennheiser headphone set into the receiver, the sound quality is very good but of course, to get the sound to the microphones in the hearing aid, the head phone ear pieces have to be held about 1/2 half above the ear, which is a bit awkward. So that is what I do. It looks somewhat foolish but it works. It's the only way I can hear TV audio without blasting my wife out of the room. If the only option with this system was use of the induction loop, I would return the system. I love Sennheiser but for BTE hearing aid users this system needs help. The wireless Sennheiser system I have used for several years no longer works and it seems a replacement for that system is no longer available.

Works great

Written By GaryS, Colorado on Friday, January 27, 2012

Blake was very helpful in determining if this unit would work with our HDTV in terms of providing sound to the receiver as well as to the tv. Received it yesterday and wife used it and for me it was PERFECT. I have excellent hearing and it was nice to have the tv at a low volume while my wife could hear the tv clearly. She now needs to find the right headphones to use as the unit does not come with headphones.

Pros: Worked as advertised. Easy to setup, easy to use. Not having a loud tv now is really nice.

Cons: Cost - way too much. Less at other sources but have always liked the service at Crutchfield.

Excellent Product - Easy to Use

Written By Paul, Dallas, TX on Sunday, December 25, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this for my 84 year old techno-phobe mother. She was skeptical at first because so many gadgets we have tried before have not worked with her hearing loss. She really missed being able to listen to NPR and hearing the dialogue on TV. I set this unit up for her with an A-B source switch ($4 on Amazon) to easily switch between radio and television as the input source. She has quickly mastered the device and loves how easy it is to use with the T-coil built into her hearing aids and the mobility it affords her to be anywhere in the house and hear the radio or TV.

Pros: It works and is simple to use. Range.

Cons: A built in source switch to connect multiple sources to the device.

It works for me

Written By MartinG, Roseville, CA on Monday, May 02, 2011

My hearing is diminished in one ear, so I have to adjust the L-R balance in order
to hear equally in both ears. I connected it to some ear bud plugs that I use for
my iPod. However, I will have to get some ear buds that fit better, so I can
maximize the capabilities of the unit. But never the less, hearing is very crisp
and clear.

I bought the unit because, I will have to get a hearing aid and the unit can be
used with a hearing aid.

I wish the unit had some bass and treble adjustment, that is why I only gave it
four stars.

Great TV Listening

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sennheiser SET 840 S is exactly what is says it is. I can plug in a head set, ear buds or
send it to my hearing aids through the induction loop supplied.. Your hearing aids must have
the T-coil (telephone mode) to receive sound to your hearing aids, I went to my hearing aid
store to make the setting good. The RF signal is strong and I can walk around the house and
still hear the TV sound. No static, except if you go out of range as is with any wireless device.
Also there are plenty of options on the main unit to hook up to your tv or stereo via mic or
audio pin jack. Adjustments for signal strength and sound treble and balance, stereo or
mono. And great support for the product.
great product !!

Sennheiser SET 840 S

Written By DaveT, Bartlesville, OK on Saturday, September 04, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For wireless TV listening in a very open floorplan house with two TVs, we had been using
Sennheiser RS120s. However, the headphones are a bit clumsy and the headband is
broken on each of them so they fall off if heads are not kept level. We had been looking for a
wireless receiver about the size of an iPod Nano to use with our own earpods. The SET840-
S seems to be just the thing even though it is marketed for use with hearing aids. They are a
bit pricey but are very nice. We have no complaints.

Product Research

Overview: The Sennheiser Set 840-S is an RF stereo TV listening system and is especially suited for those who wear hearing aids with a built-in induction coil (t-coil). Easily connected to a TV, hi-fi system or radio, the Set 840-S produces excellent sound, transmitted from the receiver to the hearing aid via wireless induction using the included induction loop. Alternatively, you can connect headphones or induction couplers to the lightweight clip-on receiver.

T-Coils: A t-coil (or telecoil) is a very small coil of wire built within some hearing aids that serve as an antenna. It can be activated by a switch on the hearing aid when it is set to the "T" position. Hearing aids with t-coils allow the wearer to have much clearer hearing without feedback. To create the proper magnetic field, a personal induction loop (such as the one included with the Set 840-S) or a larger, full room loop is needed. Approximately 30% of hearing aids in the US have t-coils.

RF Wireless Range: The Sennheiser Set 840-S provides a wireless mobility range of up to 100 feet. It can transmit through walls, so you don't have to be in the same room as your TV or audio system.

RF wireless receiver: The RF wireless receiver features a stethoscope design. The receiver is ideal for connection to hearing aids with a T setting using the included induction loop or headphones (with a 3.5mm jack).

RF Transmitter/Charging Station: The RF transmitter/charging station connects to your television and then wirelessly transmits a stereo audio signal to the stethoscope-style wireless receiver. The RF transmitter/charging station also recharges the integrated battery inside the wireless receiver when they are placed on the base.

System Connections: The included RF transmitter/charging station features a 3.5mm input to connect to your television's audio or headphone output using the supplied stereo minijack cable, minijack-to-RCA cable, or 1/4" adapter.

Microphone: The Sennheiser Set 840-S comes supplied with an external microphone which picks up the television's audio from the TV's built-in speaker. The microphone plugs into the 3.5mm audio input on the back of the RF transmitter/charging base and then is placed near the speaker of the television.

Auto Tuning: The wireless receiver automatically searches for one of the 3 channels (925.95, 926.8, 927.5 MHz) of the transmitter to tune in your television's audio.

Ergonomic Controls: Ergonomic controls and visual feedback of certain operations make the Set 840-S easy to use. There is a large, ergonomic volume control on the stethoscope-style receiver to adjust volume level. There is also a balance control on the receiver to adjust the balance so that you hear equally well with both ears.

Three Selectable Hearing Settings: The Sennheiser Set 840-S offers 3 selectable hearing settings on the transmitter. These settings optimize speech intelligibility due to switchable compression and treble emphasis.

Auto Power: The RF wireless receiver automatically turns-on when you place them on your ears and automatically turns-off when you take them out (after 30 seconds). If you are not within the range of the transmitter, the receiver automatically switches off after 3 minutes.

Power Supply: The RF wireless receiver features an integrated lithium-polymer battery to ensure a long operating time of up to 9 hours. The receiver charges when it is rested on the transmitter/charging station (up to 3 hours). It can be placed in the transmitter's charging compartment facing in either direction. The transmitter/charging station operates off of standard AC household current using the supplied AC power adapter.

  • Modulation: FM, stereo
  • Carrier Frequency: 925.95, 926.8, 927.5 MHz
  • Range: up to 100'
  • Frequency Response: 50-16,000 Hz
  • THD: <1% (1kHz)
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 70 dB (A)
  • Operating Time: up to 9 hours
  • Charging Time: approximately 3 hours
