Our take on the Garmin nüvi® 1350LMT

by Dominic Devito
Garmin

Who needs a portable navigator?

Portable GPS puts you in touch with the world when you're on the road. Tap the restaurant icon, and it asks you what kind of food you're looking for. Type in "Mexican," and you're eating a burrito before you know it. A portable navigator not only gets you to your destination, it can also find museums, theaters, and other spots along the way. Many navigators receive traffic reports, so you can avoid jams. Other cool features range from hands-free calling to 3D graphics and lane guidance. Best of all, you can move a portable easily from car to car, a big plus for multi-car families.

Garmin's nüvi 1350LMT portable navigator gives you great guidance for the long haul, with nüMaps Lifetime™ downloadable updates that keep your maps current without any extra costs or hidden fees. It also comes with a free traffic-information service that'll keep you tuned into any congestion along your route.

Great guidance with text-to-speech
This handy portable can ease the stress of the daily commute and help you navigate through unfamiliar areas far from home. You'll view detailed maps of the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands on its 4.3" color touchscreen display, while text-to-speech voice prompts eliminate last-second panic attacks by announcing actual street names. Lane guidance puts you in the right spot for upcoming turns.

This Garmin features 6 million points of interest so you can quickly find restaurants, banks, fuel stations, hotels, and other nearby destinations. You can even add custom points of interest to mark favorite stops a little off the beaten path. Garmin's ecoRoute™ feature calculates the most fuel-efficient route and tracks fuel usage, helping you save gas and money.

Free map updates for life
Garmin's nüMaps Lifetime map updates offer a convenient and simple solution to keeping the maps and points-of-interest info current. You can update your maps up to four times a year for as long as your own your Garmin. No more worries about new construction in your area or your favorite restaurant moving to a new location — with nüMaps, you're sure of accurate guidance for the long run.

Leave congestion worries behind
The included a FM-TMC traffic-info receiver will keep you updated on potential delays in most metropolitan areas. The nüvi can offer detailed information on the cause of the delay, and save you time by finding a quick way around the problem. Best of all, you pay no subscription fees for the life of your navigator.

Navigation Features

Map Software: The nuvi 1350-LMT comes loaded with City Navigator North America NT 2011.10 software, which contains mapping detail of the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The maps feature nearly 6-million points of interest (POIs), such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs and attractions.

Free Lifetime Map Updates: The Garmin nuvi 1350-LMT includes free lifetime map updates which give you the most up-to-date maps for the life of the Garmin GPS unit. You can activate your free lifetime map updates service at www.mygarmin.com and download up to four map updates per year as soon as they become available. It can only be used for this Garmin GPS unit. Due to insufficient built-in memory and the size of the map updates, an optional microSD card (2 GB or larger) will be required.

Note: Free Lifetime Map Updates entitle you to receive up to 4 map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on the Garmin website, for this specific Garmin product only until this product's useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. The updates you receive will be updates to the same geographic map data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased.

microSD Memory Slot: The nuvi 1350-LMT has a microSD memory slot for additional map data from optional microSD memory cards. The unit can also display photo images from a microSD memory card.

Antenna: The unit has a built-in antenna in its top panel. In order to obtain an optimal signal, the unit must have a clear, unobstructed view of the sky. It the unit is mounted in a vehicle with a coated windshield or an in-screen heating system, there may be difficulty in obtaining a good signal.

Touch Screen Display: The unit features a bright, 4.3" (diagonal) LCD with touch screen controls. The display has a resolution of 480 x 272 pixels, with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and 64,000 colors. The screen has a manual brightness adjustment.

Keyboard Options: The nuvi 1350-LMT gives you two options for keyboard layouts. When you are entering an address or other data, you can choose between a standard QWERTY keyboard layout or an ABCDE alphabetical layout.

Information Pages: The information provided by the nuvi 1350-LMT is found on various display screens called pages. The pages give you the following information:

  • Map:
    • Indicates real-time moving map illustrating your current position and intended route
    • Shows map scale and geographic details such as lakes, rivers, highways and towns
    • Allows you to zoom, pan, and point using the touch screen controls
    • When you are following a route, your arrival time is displayed in the lower left corner, your current speed is shown in the lower right corner.
    • When you are simply driving while viewing the Map page (not following a route), your speed is shown in the lower right corner, the direction you are driving is shown in the lower left corner
  • Trip Information:
    • Shows current compass heading while moving
    • Indicates current speed, maximum speed, arrival time, distance and time to next turn
    • Calculates driving time, stopped time and total time
    • Displays overall distance traveled (odometer) and distance to your final destination
  • Current Route:
    • Displays a list of turn-by-turn instructions for your entire route as well as arrival information
    • Shows direction of each turn and distance
  • Next Turn:
    • Shows the next turn on the map and the distance and time left before you reach the turn

Where Am I? The "Where Am I?" feature gives you instant access to important information in case of an emergency. When you select "Where Am I?" from the menu, you get the coordinates (including elevation) of your current position, plus the nearest address and intersections. There are also buttons to help you locate the nearest hospitals, police stations, gas stations, and roadside assistance. You can also save the location for future reference.

Where To? During navigation, you can search for places by pressing "Menu", then "Where To?" You can select an Address, Go Home, Points of Interest, Recently Found, Favorites, Extras, Intersections, Cities, Browse Map, and Coordinates. You can also access Spell Name for direct entry of your new destination, or browse the map. You can search for locations near your present location (default), or select a different city, your current route, or your destination.

Custom Points of Interest: The nuvi 1350-LMT will accept custom points of interest (POI) databases, available from various companies on the Internet. Some custom POI databases contain alert information for points such as safety cameras and school zones, and the unit can notify you as you approach one of these points. To download custom POIs, you will need the Garmin POI Loader software, available on Garmin's website.

Usage Modes: The nuvi 1350-LMT can be used in any of three usage modes: automotive, pedestrian, and bicycle.

Map Orientation: You can select one of three map orientation displays:

  • 2D Track Up: two-dimensional map that constantly displays the route from top to bottom on the screen
  • 2D North Up: two-dimensional map that constantly displays North at the top of the screen
  • 3D Track Up: three-dimensional map that constantly displays the route from top to bottom on the screen

Screen Color Mode: You can select one of three color modes for the display screen:

  • Daytime: has a lighter, brighter background
  • Nighttime: has a black background, easier to see at night
  • Auto: display automatically switches between daytime and nighttime at sunrise and sunset

Vehicle Icons: The default on-screen icon representing your vehicle is a blue sports car. In the menu, you can select a blue 4WD pickup truck, a blue compact car, a blue 3D arrow, a pair of boots, a large bird, or a rolling beach ball. You can also download other vehicle icons from the "Garmin Garage" website.

Route Preferences: When calculating a route, you can select the following preferences: faster time, shorter distance, less fuel, or off road.

ecoRoute: The ecoRoute feature calculates your vehicle's fuel economy, carbon footprint, and the fuel price of navigating to a destination. It also offers tools for improving fuel efficiency. Through ecoRoute's Fuel report and Mileage Report, you can track fuel usage and gas mileage during each trip. There is also a driving challenge to help you maximize your fuel economy by scoring your driving habits.

Avoidances: You can program the unit to avoid certain things that may be undesirable on your route. Examples of things that can be avoided include U-Turns, Highways, Toll Roads, Carpool Lanes, Unpaved Roads, and Ferries.

Waypoints: You can manually mark and name any map position as a waypoint for later recall. Up to 1000 waypoints can be saved into memory.

Indoor Use: When indoors, you can activate the built-in simulator and practice using the unit. This turns off the GPS receiver so it's not searching for satellites.

Tools: The nuvi 1350-LMT offers several tools you can use as you travel:

  • World Clock: The world clock allows you to display the current time for four locations throughout the world. You can also display a map of the world showing which portions are in daylight and which are in darkness.
  • Unit Converter: You can convert area, distance, speed, temperature, volume, and weight.
  • Calculator: The calculator allows you to perform simple arithmetic.

Garmin Lock: Garmin Lock is an anti-theft feature. You can set a 4-digit PIN and a security location (such as your home or office). Every time the nuvi 1350-LMT is powered on, you must enter the PIN, or drive to your security location.

Traffic Information

FM Traffic: The nuvi 1350-LMT can receive traffic information broadcast over the FM Radio Data System (RDS), when connected to the supplied Garmin GTM 25 FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) receiver. When you are in a coverage area, the traffic delays are rated by severity with color-coded icons. If you encounter severe traffic along your route, the unit will automatically recalculate the route for you to avoid traffic delays. The nuvi 1350-LMT includes a product lifetime subscription to NAVTEQ Traffic. Traffic information is available in approximately 50 North American cities.

Note: Free Lifetime Traffic Updates may not be transferred to another person or another Garmin product. Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver (as long as you own a compatible Garmin GPS) or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter. Traffic content not available for all areas.

Coupons: Location-relevant offers and pop-up coupons may appear on the unit when the traffic receiver is connected to external power. These offers include a coupon code which can be redeemed when presented at the advertised location. (You should not attempt to write down coupon codes while driving.) The offers and coupons can only be disabled by deactivating the traffic feature.

Picture Viewer

Picture Viewer: The nuvi 1350-LMT can display photo images (JPEG files). The image files must be stored on an optional microSD memory card or transferred to the internal memory.

Photo Navigation: The Panoramio (www.panoramio.com) website provides photographs that include location information called geotags. These photos can be downloaded into the nuvi 1350-LMT or microSD memory card, and the unit can route you to the location.

Mounting Options

Mounting: The unit should be securely installed when used in a vehicle. The unit comes with a mounting bracket that includes a suction cup. The suction cup can be used to mount the unit to the windshield. Once the nuvi 1350-LMT is mounted, it can be adjusted on the ball-and-socket bracket for best visibility. The unit must be installed where it has a relatively unobstructed view of the sky.

Power Requirements

Rechargeable Battery: The nuvi 1350-LMT operates on your vehicle's battery using the included 12-volt cigarette lighter power adapter, the built-in Lithium-Ion batteries, or household current using an optional AC adapter. The Lithium-Ion batteries provide up to 3 hours of use after a 4-hour charge. Stored data, such as waypoints or unit settings, are not lost when the unit is disconnected from a power source.

Computer Requirements

Internal Memory: The nuvi 1350-LMT comes with an internal memory for storage of supplemental maps and photos. When the unit is connected to your computer, the nuvi 1350-LMT is recognized as a USB Mass Storage device.

Interface Capability: This unit can be connected to a PC via USB cable (not included). This USB 2.0 full speed interface allows you to download additional map information to the unit's flash memory. The unit has a standard Mini-USB Version 2.0 jack.

Big Step Up

Written By RoyR, North Providence, RI on Sunday, August 21, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Big step up from GPS of a few years ago. Worth it's weight in gold. Having map updates going forward is great too.

Only one small negative is that pressing keys can sometimes be a challenge. Hopefully it's just a matter of me getting the knack of it.

good but could be better

Written By Steve, Virginia on Thursday, August 04, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

OK, this is a good GPS, but not a great GPS. I had an earlier and cheaper Garmin nuvi, and they both have some of the same problems. It could be "operator error" but I still have not figured out if it is possible to delete one saved location from memory without deleting all saved locations from memory - same problem with the earlier model. And I would like a feature that my car's GPS has: I would like to be able to "drag" the screen so I can see what is ahead, without having to increase the scale and thus lose detail. That can't be too hard to do, can it? And, a little inconsistency: the earlier GPS told me, a the top of the screen, what road I was on; this one tells me what the next road is that I will be on. Confusing. But it works!

Nice graphics and easy to use. Screen size is perfect . Even though brand new, the maps seem outdated in smaller towns. Also, if i don't use for several days, it may take the satellite up to 15 minutes to pick up and I live in a major city.

A neat little package with loads of features

Written By Gene K., San Antonio, TX on Thursday, April 07, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After spending several weeks of frustration with the TOMTOM I gave up on this
device and was recommended by a Crutchfield Advisor to try out the Garvin Nuvi
. All I can say is good things about this GPS device. It is very intutivately
workable
and the soft keys don't give you multiple letters or numbers when you tap them.
I am very pleased with my Nuvi Garmin.

1350LMT Review

Written By laadyb, Anaheim, CA on Thursday, December 09, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've held out buying a GPS mainly because I didn't want to pay a subscription for traffic,
so the LMT seemed like a perfect choice for me. I took it for a road test to Carmel and
was pleasantly surprised by some things and a little disappointed with others.
However, I am happy overall with my purchase.

I'm the adventuresome type so thought it fun when the unit took me off the highway for
a "shorter" route on a secondary highway. This might be a little disconcerting for some
who prefer to stay on main roads.

On the navigation tool, they should included "Scenic Route" along with the shorter
and faster routes options. I had to do some quick thinking to get it to take me home
along Coast Highway, but I never was able to get it to route me along all of Monterey's 17
Mile Drive as cared only about the various gates and not the drive itself.

My biggest disappointment was the device's inability to help me find diesel fuel for my
Jetta TDI. After all, it knew I needed diesel from information supplied for the Eco
settings. I had to use an iPhone app for that and then program in the station address.
Too much work when you're on the road.

The FM Traffic tool worked relatively well, but could have been a little more proactive in
keeping me out of a major jam up. It still did a better job that anything else I've tried so
far so can't complain too much. I would definitely suggest this model to a first time GPS
buyer.

Garmin Nuvi 1350 LMT

Written By JG, New York on Friday, December 03, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my second Nuvi. My first was the 350 which still works perfectly, but I did not
want to pay for much needed map updates. I bought this one for the lifetime maps and
traffic features. The Nuvi kept giving exit options which were not necessary as I was on
the proper hwy. I thought the traffic delays would also be spoken but not so. Then I
looked at the Nuvi and saw the word DELAY in bold print and realized that's why I kept
getting exit prompts. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because Garmin did not
provide an A/C power adapter for charging in the home. Fortunately, the adapter for the
350 fit perfectly. Also, it is difficult to enter letters with the touch type keyboard which
does not work as well or easily as the 350 unit. Great Device...Highly recommend. I
also highly recommend Crutchfield ... excellent service!

Slim Profile, Bright Screen, and Easy to Use

Written By EdE, Coral Springs, FL on Thursday, November 11, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Recently upgraded from a 4 year old Magellan Roadmate 760...and it's amazing how
things have changed. This new Garmin 1350 is intuitive, easy to use, and while
featuring a big 4.3 " screen, it is still as portable as a smartphone due to its slim profile.
Entering destinations is quick and easy, finding satellites is prompt, and converting the
input to routing seems really fast. Mounting bracket is convenient in a number of
locations on my dashboard. I did replace the cigarette lighter cord with a universal
USB charging cord so I can use the same USB lighter insert to charge our phones and
the GPS unit. Of course I have not yet used the map update service, but I did register the
unit on line and the process went flawlessly. Next weekend we will be taking our first
long distance trip with the unit and will get to see how well the traffic radio functionality
works. This is a great product that was purchased at a great Crutchfield price.

Quality product at a cost effective price

Written By JimInRaleigh, NC on Monday, November 01, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After narrowing down the brand and model using website based reviews, I shopped for value. Buying maps regularly and the separate cost of the traffic receiver, the 1350LMT is clearly the best buy with free maps and traffic for life. Crutchfield had the best total cost delivered. If you can pay the little bit extra up front, you'll save hundreds down the road (pardon the pun). Excellent product, amazingly accurate and very easy to use. Buy it!

Garmin nüvi® 1350LMT

Written By Steve B., Fullerton, CA on Thursday, October 28, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Service from Crutchfield was excellent as usual. After a long search on the Internet, I found that Crutchfield had the lowest price for this unit. I decided on the Nuvi 1350LMT after extensively looking at comparable Tom Tom and Magellan units and the range of Garmin products. It's not the top of the line and it definitely has more features than the cheapest. The lifetime map will be an excellent add for my money. My 4-yr old Garmin unit needed a map update and when it quit (probably from being dropped one too many times or heated too often in the front seat of the car), a replacement unit was a requirement. Paper maps and Southern California traffic do not mix!. This Garmin unit does everything I need and the traffic advice is a nice to have add for me. So ... PLUG AND PLAY exactly as advertised immediately after being connected to my PC for its latest map update and product registration.

The Garmin nüvi 1350LMT is a really good GPS...comes with Free traffic updates and
lifetime map updates...nice, big, clear LCD screen...recalculates pretty fast...only complaint is
that sometimes it lets you know about upcoming traffic too late...can't beat the price
anywhere else...overall, great value for the money
