Whether you're taking the family on vacation, zipping through weekend errands, or doing the daily commute grind, you want reliable guidance that's easy to follow. And what's easier to follow than a nice big display? Garmin's nüvi 2797LMT portable navigator offers a 7" screen that gives you the upper hand when it's time to make your miles count. And this handy highway buddy gives you plenty of fun features, like voice-activated navigation that recognizes your speech, and Bluetooth® connectivity that lets you enjoy hands-free calling with your compatible phone. You can also wirelessly connect to Garmin's free app for Android™ phones to get valuable real-time local information.
Voice-activated navigation is quite simple: with one spoken command, you can "wake up" the navigator to respond to your voice. You can search through menus, then input addresses and destinations without touching the screen. The Garmin will respond to your words intelligently. Built-in Bluetooth lets you sync your compatible phone to the navigator for hands-free conversations you carry on through the nüvi's integrated microphone and speaker.
Android phone users can download Garmin's free Smartphone Link app to their device and connect to the nüvi 2797LMT. When paired, the navigator can use your phone's existing data plan to share information such as saved and recently found locations, where you parked, and your current destination. You can then use your phone to give you step-by-step directions back to your car in a large parking lot, for example, or import destinations to your navigator from your phone. You can also launch Garmin Live Services from the app, which give you local weather reports, live traffic updates, real-time photos from traffic cameras, area gas prices, and nearby parking help. Some Garmin Live Services require a subscription. Data charges may apply for using Smartphone Link — you'll want to check with your service provider.
The nüvi 2797LMT offers Garmin Real Directions with Garmin Real Voice, a combination that helps keep you relaxed as you drive. Real Directions voice prompts speak the instructions to you like a friend would, using easy-to-see landmarks, buildings and businesses, and traffic lights, rather than streets with tiny signs that you might not see in time. With Real Voice technology, you'll hear directions spoken in a personable, human-sounding voice that you'll easily understand.
The nüvi 2797LMT's generous 7" touchscreen puts you right in the thick of the action as you drive. You'll have access to preloaded maps of the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and several Caribbean islands, along with millions of points of interest; you can even add your own favorite stopping points. You can find and select businesses right on the map screen without having to go through time-wasting menus. Speed limit displays with visual warnings on major roads help keep you in check, and you'll even be notified of school zones. And with one tap of the screen, you can pull up details for services that lie ahead on your route, including restaurants, gas stations, and more.
Garmin incorporates several helpful visual tools to keep you on the correct path:
You'll see all three visual features in a split-screen with your overall route so you won't lose sight of what's further down the road. You also get free updates on traffic along your route and quick solutions for avoiding delays, as well as up to four free map updates per year to keep you updated on road changes.
The nüvi 2797LMT features free lifetime traffic updates using Garmin's Traffic service, which is more expansive and timely than ever. Garmin Traffic incorporates data from active devices on the road, historical traffic patterns, and other factors like construction, concerts, and sporting events to give you a comprehensive look at congestion in most metropolitan areas, including a few cities in Canada. Garmin Traffic is also voice activated, so it can respond to the sound of your spoken words. Best of all, you won't have to pay a penny more for this service over the life of your nüvi.

Really, it might deserve 5 stars, but we haven't had it long and have only used it to navigate once...and that was just playing because we actually knew where we were going. We are not GPS people, we don't like them and never wanted one. I still feel that way for the most part but have conceded that there have been a couple of times (two that I can think of) when some GPS features would be nice to have. Mostly, the gas station locator. That said, this one seems to have sufficient bells and whistles. I really like the lifetime free updates and the big screen. I may have more to say about it once we've used it more; for now, we are pretty satisfied.
Pros: Screen size, lifetime map updates.
Cons: Memory seems a little small. I think upgrades are possible but it seems odd that it should come nearly 75% full.
Does everything I need it to do, a little large for the windshield, but a cd mount would be ideal.
Arrived as expected and works great!
Pros: Simple to input addresses and gives clear voice directions.
Cons: None that I am aware of.
Where you all my life? OMG you are FANTASTIC! Have had many GPS units, but you are hands down the best! The wife LOVES the voice command.
Pros: Everything. The ability to add favorite POI's on the where to screen ... voice command is the best. Have used it playing around and it ALWAYS understands what I say from POI's to addresses. This is the unit to have. Love the 'turn left/right at the next light' real voice feature. I live in a small town, can't wait to get to a larger city where the real voice feature will be at 100%.
Cons: I do miss the ability to be able to choose which POI's show on the map. It get's sooooo cluttered that I had to turn the poi's off, but to make up for that, shortcuts on the where to page help a lot.
Awesome so far! Just got it so have not used the nav part yet( don't need it and haven't read the manual). But the mapping is incredible!
Enticed by the 7" screen but turns out to be a little big for my car (Would probably be ok for my truck). Voice command more amusing than practical as it make somewhat wild guesses as to what was stated. Directions a little bit slower than the 2015 Model 2639LMT which I bought after returning this one.
Pros: Clear screen, good touch to key info, very practical quick release cord adapter, plenty of info provided
Cons: voice command not quite practical enough, size may be too big for cars dashboard, a little slow at times with directions
For a few years I've needed to update my GPS unit, but waited for Garmin to come out with a larger screen AND the quick release powered mount, ... the 2797LMT has that. I use it in my 2010 Ford Fusion and there's no problem with it obscuring my vision of other traffic and the road. It takes me on what I consider preferred quickest routes vs. my old GPS taking me through loads of traffic and traffic lights. I don't use voice activation and bluetooth, so cant comment on the performance of those features. UPDATED 8/10/15: This is an update to my previous five star review, and a caution not with regards the software and map update. When I received my unit in the first week of July 2015, I allowed it to update to software version 5.00 and map 2015.40 I worked perfect and used the best routing, until 4 Aug when I updated to software version 5.10 and map 2016.10, and now it selects the absolutely silly routing, which I can work-around in the areas I'm familiar with, but have no confidence in areas new to me. Garmin are sending a replacement, and with that one I'll install map updates to the memory card and test it before updating the unit. You might want to reconsider this software and map update.
Pros: Large bright high resolution screen. Quick release powered mount Life time maps and traffic Easy user friendly operation
Cons: Not found any yet
The size makes it easy to see from distant RV dashboard. Not many customization options but the defaults are intelligently selected. Voice recognition is limited to select words / phrases but again, the essentials work well. Recommended for applications where the size doesn't block your view ahead.
Pros: Size, brightness, clear display, overall ease of use.
Cons: Limited screen customization. For example, cannot display distance to arrival and estimated time of arrival on screen at same time; have to press an icon to select which is displayed.
Couldn't be easier to use. From box to vehicle....simple simple simple! 20 hour trip from Philadelphia PA to Naples FL was flawless......avoided congestion and closed roads and was provided with updated arrival times due to conditions.
Pros: Simple. Easy to read display. Adjustable volume.
Cons: None to mention
The 2797 is, overall, easy to use. Its menus are intuitive, and the screen is large enough that entering in addresses is easy. If you are looking for a solid, reasonably priced top-level unit, this one should definitely be on your short list!
Pros: Screen size makes the maps easy to see and the unit easy to use. Menus are intuitive and not complex.
Cons: The matte finish on the screen can make it difficult to see during the daytime if sunlight is shining directly on the screen. Also, the adjustment for brightness is hard to find, and you will want to dim the unit if you are using it at night.
this is the best gps on the market for the money
I went through several GPS devices until I found this one. It is superior to the others plus customer care is A + with Crutchfield where I bought it. They also had the best price. I can call Crutcfield anytime and talk to an America not someone in the Philippines or some other foreign country. That in itself means a lot to me
Pros: Large easy to see, voice activated, very responsive and accurate
Cons: I cant think of any except possibly the weight but dont bother me. I really Love it
I like the product and really was impressed by the service and price!
Best price, quick - delivered the day estimated. Great Service. Thanks
This was my first navigation unit that was portable, always had it built in my radio. The garmin nuvi2797 lmt was the best i,ve ever used.Very easy to set up and use. I linked it to my phone and it also shows every turn with actual real photo of the turn exit sign. voice command was also a bonus. I used this on a trip to the beach,it took me to the hotel with no problem. It also will tell you of upcoming gas and eat along the way. very satisfied.... john s
Great screen and fast processor. Features are outstanding. Best price.
Pros: Big screen , fast processor and outstanding features,
Cons: Price is okay but could be cheaper. Worst part is not the GPS. I Have a 2014 CRV and the only way to attach it is by way of the air vent. It does not attach well ...due to the vent fins being large. It also blocks the air flow. Come on Garmin. Why create a great GPS and have a crap attachment.
Pros: Like everything about this GPS perfect for my app
Cons: Don't know any
I was contemplating purchasing an entirely new Head Unit for my SUV, which included Navigation/GPS. However, after reading the product details and customer reviews, I decided to purchase the Nuvi 2797LMT, as it is a more precise/dedicated Navigation System devoted solely to navigation, unlike the Head Units. The screen is large, clear and contains detailed Map and Guidance information ; Voice commands are clear and concise with Landmark navigation along with Street Name identification at turns ; Map updates are easy. Just set it up, start the download and walk away until it's completed. Overall, I'm very pleased with the Garmin Nuvi 2797MT
Pros: Large clear screen Clear, concise voice commands with Landmark and Street Name announcements Easy(And Free) map updates for the life of the unit(unlike a Head Unit with Navigation built in , which can cost more than $100 to update) Portable and easy to transfer from vehicle to vehicle(Especially on vacation and with the use of rental cars)
Cons: The windshield suction cup mount is not strong enough for the weight/size of the Nuvi 2797LMT. I purchased a CD mount which slides into the CD slot on my Head Unit, which holds the Nuvi 2797LMT securely in place and centers the unit just below the level of my dash board.
I do not update my GPS model very often because the new ones look very much like the old ones. But, looks are not everything. In a small SUV, the large screen is most welcome - but heavy. On my first test drive, the bean bag mount went flying. I had to find a spot under the windshield where it couldn't wiggle around. I have a Mac with Yosemite and downloaded all the latest Garmin apps. Everything works perfectly for map management and updates. Basecamp has a few minor UI issues so I have to remember to click off a field after I modify it. Automatic volume nudges up when I drive with the window open as it should. Voice commands work fairly well, within limits. If I ask for a restaurant by name which is not in its database, it will find a similar sounding name. This makes it appear that it's a voice command problem when it's not. Be sure to keep and label all the cables. Garmin uses some previously unused pins on the mini/micro USB connector to identify their own charging and data cables. You can make your own, but it's not worth the hassle. The best updates have been to the application software to add commonly used destinations. On my old Nuvi 500, I had to modify the XML files with a text editor to quickly add points. Now, it's possible to do this entirely thru their Basecamp by pasting in the lat/lon from Google Maps. To delete, you still need to use the device. To update, you have to delete first.
Pros: Large bright screen, voice commands, good supporting software, mac compatible, great volume
Cons: Heavy, needs special charging and data cables, map updates take several hours, battery does not last very long
After weighing the features and display sizes of GPS units, I chose the nuvi2797LMT. I thought the larger display would be beneficial to me as I'm over 50. The unit came with a compatible live traffic cable, a GTM 36. Note that live traffic will not work until you register your GPS. Downloading software and map updates in Garmin Express was easy. The GPS provides a warning tone and flag on screen when you are approaching school zones. Lane assist, real view, speed limit information all very handy. Having the GPS tell me to turn left at a street, then follow that with turn left at the name of a store at the corner was very handy. I have been using it locally to get used to how it works in areas familiar to me. It recalculates quickly when I don't take the exit it wanted me to take. All in all, very happy with the unit, with one biting criticism explained in Cons.
Pros: This is a unit that does what I feel a GPS should; it acts like a local expert with directions that are relevant to daily human life "turn right at the 7-11." Also, I feel as though the 7" screen will serve me better than a five or six inch screen.
Cons: A suction cup mount is included in the box. I suppose this mount may work well with smaller, lighter units. However, it couldn't hold the 2797 for a minute before it lost suction and fell. To me, the suction cup mount, as designed, is a waste of space and weight in the package. Garmin, either remove it, or redesign it. I bought the friction mount, and all is well now.
Device performs as expected. Rating decreased due to having to purchase a additional $70 cable (Garmin GTM 60) from Garmin in order to activate/receive the Life Time HD Traffic updates. Very disappointing for a unit this expensive.
Pros: Easy visibility with 7" screen
Cons: Missing required cable (Garmin GTM 60; $70) to activate/receive lifetime HD traffic updates. Windshield mount does not appear to be strong enough to support this 7" unit; has fallen several times already, even with a clean initial install.
Set up of the unit was easy. Using the unit while on the road is easy to do also. I would have giveb 5 stars but am haveing difficulty getting the lifetime traffic to work.
Pros: large screen easy to see
Cons: life time traffic set up
I bought this to replace my wife's five year old Garmin. This one is much larger than the old one. The touch screen has better response than the last one. One of the best features is that the docking cradle stays plugged in all of the time. It makes removing the GPS effortless and plugging it back in. Split screen for exits is really slick
Pros: Power to docking cradle vs back of unit Screen size Touch response Cost
Cons: All Garmins should accept back up camera accessory
Having a nice big screen for portable GPS units is long overdue. I am really pleased with the 7 inch screen this model has and I can finally read the street names while driving. The unit is very intuitive to use and I have only had to read the PDF manual on two occasions. On the negative side, you can not use the GPS while it is plugged into your computer via your USB port. It loads Garmen Express which is software used to manage like exchanging files from one unit to another amoung others. So if your battery is low and you want to plan a trip you won't be able to until you have a sufficient charge you won't be able to use it while charging. With all of my toys including a list of GPS units this is the first one that operates like this. I plan to use this solely for GPS routing and won't be using the voice or Blue Tooth.
Pros: Awesome screen size.
Cons: Can't use it when plugged into your computer USB.
This is a great product. Much better than the last Garmin which I broke. Much better directions with details such as turn after the Starbuck's etc. Lane advice is really handy when driving in unfamiliar areas. Great product.
Pros: Much more detail and helpful information. Good size screen for easy reading.
Replaced 8 year old Nuvi. 2797 is light years ahead of old GPS. It is easier to use, provides more helpful info to find and see next turn on expressway with split screen showing map view and ground view of exit. Provides more info on screen i.e. car speed, speed limit, time left to destination, restaurants, ATMs, gas stations and more.
Pros: Large screen - shows split screen as exits are approached. Lifetime map updates.
Cons: Doesn't come with case for when you leave the car and want to take it with you. There is an inexpensive padded case that can be purchased at another on line retailer and it works great.
We are very happy with our Nuvi 2797 and the Crutchfield store team in Charlottesville is the best. We are so happy that we now have two units. We added on the weather service feature, it is very good. These units are a replacement for another brand and a we are very impressed with the units and customer service. Both our in store and Garmin Technical Support experiences have been very responsive. We did have a unit that had some software issues and it was replaced right on the spot.
Pros: Large screen, detailed maps, trip data options, fast satellite and route calculate, easy phone bluetooth configuration, destination point is shown / announced by which side of the road (right / left) The Up Ahead information is very handy when you need a rest room, gas or quick food stop.
Cons: POI's (Points of Interest) don't seem to be updated very often, does not always recognize my phone's phone book, (that may be the nuvi or the phone??), the traffic notification feature has not worked lately (this may be a VA 511 problem??), The speed limit segments are not up to date.
Reasonably good GPS.
Pros: Like the 7" screen. the lifetime maps and traffic. Easy to set a location.
Cons: Does NOT have waypoint feature. If you want to wary your route a bit from the calculated route, it is not very easy. You have to set a "phoney" interim destination to force it to go your route. Also, the voice response simply does not work. I had an earlier model Garmin with this feature and it worked great for hands-free phone use. This thing is useless for that. In fact, I think Garmin should recall this unit or offer a trade for a unit that has working voice.
it works grate,,gets me where I want to go,lets me know about school zones, time, speed, and lets me answer my cell phone hands free
Pros: it is realy a great unit, with all the things it does.
Cons: have to download instructions, would like to have them in the box
Replaced an older nuvi 760. Large screen definitely an improvement with greater clarity and detail. The life time maps and traffic definitely a plus.
Pros: Large 7 " screen. Improved bluetooth and turn directions. Approaching exit simulated screen helpful on a multi-lane highway.
The 7 inch screen is great. I see a lot more information compare to other 4 or 5 inch screen GPS. The unit works well like Garmin units I owned, The voice command, which is new to me, also works well. The screen resolution is fine but not great compare to a same sized 7 inch iPad mini. The battery capacity is one hour only. Not very useful if you want to use it walking around town.
Pros: Large screen, great detail on the display. Voice command is very accurate.
Cons: Less than great screen resolution. One hour battery life only. Not great for walking tours.
Replaced a much older Nuvi 350. Improvements are outstanding.
Pros: Display size and screen clarity are great!
I've had a Garmin Nuvi 780 since 2008 and I figured it was time to upgrade to a more modern one. After doing research on what is out there, I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 2797LMT. I rely a lot on a GPS when we go on road trips so the 7" screen is excellent. Today's GPS technology has greatly improved over the last 6 years and it is much more affordable. I love the Active Lane Guidance that appears to tell you which lane you should be driving on to exit. The way it show you all the different points of interest as you are driving is excellent. My only complain is the Voice Command. It is taking a while to speak to the GPS the way it can fully understand my voice. That is probably normal though.
Pros: 7" Screen Active Lane Directions
Cons: Taking a while for my commands to be understood. Probably my fault.
I have not had a chance to use this thing much, but I used it last week and it took me to within a block of the Long Horn Steak House in Warrenton. I saw the restaurant on the left. The machine said to turn right. Close enough.
Pros: Easy to see Easy to use
Cons: Only SOOO accurate
Love my new Garmin. So easy to operate and the voice command feature is wonderful. Hands free. The graphics are great. Very easy to read and follow. Vocal warnings regarding school zones, gas and restaurant locations clearly marked along route. It's super.
Pros: Voice command feature
Right out of the box, the Garmin nüvi 2797LMT was easy to set up and also update. The onscreen instructions were easy to follow. I first used my new Garmin on a trip to Virginia. The screen was easy to read despite the fact the sun was shining. I really like the large screen, easy to follow maps and audio directions. With the audio directions you can keep both hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.
Pros: Large screen, easy to follow maps and audio directions.
I like the size. Struggling to pick up signal in Manhattan. I have used for over 10 years other garmin nuvis and none had this problem of picking up signal in NYC!!! Resolution is poor compared to other nuvis.
This thing has a nice, massive display which is why I bought it! I replaced a Garmin 1300 which is puny in comparison. I was considering Garmin's top of the line model (3597) but did a little "showrooming" at a box retailer and decided the extra cost was not worth the glossy, fancy, smaller display. I opted for the larger, more rugged display and I am happy.
Pros: Big display! Upgraded software.
Cons: Might be too large for some.
This is the best GPS I've ever had. Sooooo many useful features.
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: Needs more detailed graphics or HD
I like the size and the new direction descriptions. And it isn't always saying "Re-Calculating" All the features are nice except the voice command feature. I've tried to give an address verbally and it never gets it right. Other than that its great
Pros: New and improved features
Cons: voice commands don't work
This GPS product is outstanding!
Pros: The 7 inch screen is easy to see for the driver, as well as for others in the car. The directions are always clear and detailed-it's as if the voice has ESP!!! All the functions are easy to use and the the helpful way stop icons keep me current along the way!
Give it an address it will take you there. Keeps track of your speed and tells you if you are above the posted speed
Pros: Easy to see screen
Cons: Really none
I have heard many good things about this GPS and they are all true. Easy to set up. After using Garmin Express, you still need to go to Garmin's web site and finish registering, if not, you are only partially registered. Map and software updates took about thirty minutes. I made a four hour round trip on Christmas day with no problems. Very pleased with the unit.
Pros: Large screen, very accurate and easy to set up. Voice is very clear and understandable. Voice Command works well but needs time to fully recognize your voice.
Cons: Garmin needs to explain about doing the full registration. They also need to do a better job explaining the Micro SD card. It has to be no more than 8GB and goes next to the mini USB port on the bottom of the Garmin.
I purchased this item mainly for its large screen. This was an update for me from a very old Garmin GPS with a much smaller one. I have only owned this model for about three weeks, but I put it to use right away on a recent trip. So far - I am really impressed with its operation. It calculates very fast (compared to my older model) and finds satellites quite quickly as well. I am still discovering some of its features. I like the fact that you can choose what information to appear as an overlay on top of your map view (e.g. - miles to destination; compass direction; current time; arrival time and more.) I am also impressed with the voice activation - it seems to work really well, even with the radio on and road noise combined. I found the database for gas stations, interstate rest stops and restaurants to be pretty good. Overall, I think that it is a great unit and would highly recommend it.
Pros: Really large screen; Voice commands; Bluetooth capable; Good volume and screen brightness ( although details can be difficult to see if the sun is hitting the screen); Via points can be easily added to current route; Seems to have sufficient memory to update maps and database without using external SD card
Cons: I am pleased with it operationally so far. The screen may fade in really bright light - it would be nice if Garmin offered an optional hood to help in this area.
ONE WORD EXCELLENT. WE RECENTLY PICKED UP A NEW CAR BUT WITHOUT THE GPS, BOUGHT THIS FOR MY WIFE AND SHE IS HAPPY AS EVER.
Fast shipping and overall a great GPS unit. Screen is very large and takes up a good bit of your windshield but you adapt and get used to it quickly. Easy to use and I like that it provides full word options as you type so you don't have to type out the entire city. The voice activated option is poor. The unit is supposed to go into voice mode when a key word is used but it tends to turn on randomly as I speak. My keyword is unique where I will not say it during conversations but it still turned on. I like the way the unit displays gas/food and lodging as you drive through towns. The visual picture of your exit is awesome and helps. Also the traffic works well too. I am very pleased with this unit and would buy again. I held back on a star due to the glitchy voice activated system turning on randomly.
Pros: Large screen, ease of use.
Cons: Glitchy voice activation. Turns on randomly as I speak.
Item arrived in a short time, in perfect shape. Ive been slow in getting to use this new Garmin. This nuvi 2797LMT replaces my current nuvi 265W. The 7 inch screen is great! I'm just now getting accustomed to the upgraded interface and added features. So far, everything is better!
Pros: Much faster initial route calculation and re-routes. Automatic volume adjustment within increased noise works well. Additional groups of search items is nice, a group for veterinarians was a big hit wih my wife.
Cons: The bigger 7 inch screen is great, but might be a problem with some cars.
I have found the Garmin 2797LM superior to my Magellan. I purchased it for the 7" display which very nice. I am still learning to use the voice command feature.
I like things I can use right out of the box. We have built in navigation systems in our F-250 and Lexus. I like this one better. It is easier to use. I didn't want to spend the money for a factory unit in our new Wrangler so I planned all along to get a Garmin or comparable. After reading the reviews I decided on this one and have not been sorry. I have had it for about a month and still learning but I think it is great.
Pros: Ease of use, Clarity.
I found the way you can send locations from mobile google maps to garmin thru smartphone link. lately mobile google maps has been sending wrong locations to garmins thru smartphone link like 1000's miles away since garmin doesn't take addresses just cordinates. First find the location in mobile google maps them try to zoom in the location you want to send it garmin. Then press and hold on the very next to location red icon for one or two second and you will get new red icon very next to your location on google maps. Then same as usual just tap on the new red icon then you will get few options and tap on share and choose smartphone link.
The unit works as advertised. We love the big screen and updated the map and software on day one without trouble. This is our third Garmin GPS. Traffic reports were impossible to view, and I'm not sure if it was supposed to report traffic as a stand-alone device or in conjunction with a blue-tooth phone. Visibility was fine unless I wore polarized sun glasses. Its screen is dim to invisible with the glasses on. Service e-mails w/Garmin led to "It's coated for anti-glare and is not visible w/ polarized glasses." This is bunk because anti-glare has no relation to polarization, though polarization reduces glare. I'm returning this unit because there's no fix from Garmin. My earlier two units are OK w/polarized lenses, ditto all other LCD screens. Polarization is either horizontal or vertical, and must standardize w/ glasses normally worn using the unit(s).
Pros: Large screen. Ergonomics are convenient. Voice from unit has good diction. Our old bag mount works with the 2797 and our PC swapped favorites and other data between our old nuvi850 and new nuve2797 via USB.
Cons: Wrong polarization of LCD screen. It's opposite that of normal PC screens, phones, and backup camera displays. This is intolerable and the reason I'm exchanging it. Traffic reports were unavailable on a 980 mile trip this week.
Great product. The voice command feature works well. Large screen makes it easy to read. I recommend downloading the manual online.
Pros: Voice command, large screen, free lifetime map and traffic updates.
Cons: Manual must be downloaded.
Great product with great support from Crutchfield. No support from Garmin. At time of purchase tried to register unit with Garmin through "Garmin Express" and download updates. Would not recognize unit, had to delete and re-enter. Then map updates still failed. Two attempts and three days of waiting for a response from Garmin. When they finally did respond, they were of no help. Ended up returning unit, don't need the hassle when trying to get updates. Check out other posts online - many similar problems.
Pros: Great product
Cons: Nightmare when trying to get updates.
Very nice GPS
Pros: Acquires quickly, Great screen size, many nice features like voice command.
Cons: No ability for a locking code,, you lose it and bye bye. Maps are latest but really don't reflect street construction changes that are a year old in my area.
At first I had mixed feelings about ordering a GPS with voice commands. I feared the option would be more of a gimmick which would not function well...Boy was I wrong! I love this GPS! The voice command works flawlessly and so does the Bluetooth feature. I no longer have to fumble at touching the screen while driving. The 7" screen is bright and well displayed. Attaching the 2797LMT with its new mount is the best! The sound, graphics and total package is the best money I've spent to date on a Garmin. This unit is great for those like me that wear glasses. Big display, yet not overbearing on the dashboard. Fast power up and satellite acquisition too. The traffic feature works well but not totally reliable or current at times. Worth the price.
Pros: Big bright display, map graphics and icons, fast satellite reception, instant power up, mount feature, build, sound quality and price.
Cons: Traffic features could be better...
Love this big 7" screen GPS. It turns on almost instantaneously, and quickly finds signal. It even finds signal from inside the house. The large screen supposedly does not display more info, but displays the same info larger. However, it feels like it is displaying more info, especially when zoomed out on map view.
Pros: Large screen, and very easy to read display. Turns on quickly.
Cons: Once in a while it crashes and restarts itself.
Excellent and huge GPS. Firmware and map updates are very fast. The directions voice is very clear and as loud as you want. Also the update of the vehicle position is done at a very fast rate. The traffic reports comes in handy for letting you know how much of a delay is ahead. I have found that Garmin is superior to Tom-Tom and Magellan.
Pros: Screen size, voice command, powered-mount, up-ahead, volume, navigation functionality, traffic.
Cons: None so far.
Do everything that it says, the beautiful screen, the clarity of the voice and how it understand your commands, which make it easy to keep your attention on the road, i still pretty new to the device but until now is a winner.
Pros: Easy to use, bright screen, very good voice command
Cons: To udate the maps online takes some time, depending on your internet connection.
Excellent GPS unit!! Used it on my Harley using a handlebar mount and it worked great. Was my only means of navigation on a 3500 mile road trip and it never let me down when I changed travel plans on the fly. Got me to every destination along the way and earned my trust. I would highly recommend this large screen GPS unit!!!
Pros: Display, accuracy, durability.
this is a great product only own garmin except one time I bought a lawrance because garmin did not have a 5 inch this is the best brand out there that I see works good and works fast
Pros: 7 inch screen really big
Cons: no mount for my motorcycle
This Garmin is superb right out of the box... Simple but comprehensively authoritative ... Nothing is more soothing is then being in unfamiliar driving territory in rush rush of traffic with the Garmin giving clear , timely -well in advance for adjustments to be made - directions..
Pros: Large screen / clean graphics / clear voice / EASY set up and go
Cons: Have not run into any yet...
I am very happy with the product, Mainly bought it for use in our upcoming Europe trip, but have used it here at home and it has worked like a dream, at first it seemed to be very big, then one get used to it and enjoying the so much better reading the display. The operation of the product is pretty easy, taking a little to get used to but over all easy.
Pros: Big display easy operation Big display Easy operation
Cons: Clumsy to carry around
I have used several GPS devices and have a permanent one in my Honda Ridgeline, but this GPS by Garmin beats all of them hands down..........and good news!!; the updates are frequent and free for life.......that is a real bargain since any updates to my Honda GPS are $149 per year. I recently purchased this product through the Crutchfield website and used it on a 1400 mile trip that included Reno, NV and Boise ID. The directions were excellent and the voice providing the changes was pleasant and easily understood. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who is interested in purchasing a GPS. The size is terrific also, making it very easy to see in your vehicle.....no eye strain.
Pros: Great size, easy to read, easy to understand the audio directions, easy to program, free updates by computer easy to download..............I like everything about it.
Cons: Cannot think of any, even the price I paid was reasonable
Easy to use, size makes it easy to see. Voice is clear and concise. It has everything!!
This does all that should do. Large screen makes it easy to see for us old people.
Pros: Large screen. Voice commands. Bluetooth.
Cons: none so far
The large screen is the best. Easy to use,
Pros: Big screen, easy to use.
What a great piece of equipment and the service is, as usual, wonderful
Pros: Unit came in with a scratched screen. Another unit was sent out the next day
I have had the Garmin Nuvi 2797LMT for several weeks now and must say that I love it! The big screen is absolutely a great improvement over my old Nuvi 765. The touch screen is also more responsive. It is instant on and locates addresses very quickly. The larger screen makes viewing the detail on the GPS a snap. I use the MountainTek cd player mount so I don't have this GPS blocking the windshield in any way plus it doesnt get the full effect of the sun it normally would if mounted on the dash. I haven't tested the Bluetooth function as I already have Bluetooth built into my vechicle. I give this GPS five stars and wish they would have come out with this size a long time ago.
Pros: Size, touch screen, responsiveness.
Cons: Mounting might be a problem in a small vechicle.
Love the big screen, lifetime maps and accuracy. Easy to upgrade maps via computer.
Pros: Big Screen and ease of use.
Cons: adding address algorithm is a bit confusing
It was time to upgrade from my old GPS and I looked at a lot of reviews. The Crutchfield comments were actually very helpful. My wife drives a new Acura TL with Nav, and this Nav system is every bit as good. The split screen feature that illustrates which lane to be in for an exit, or in a complicated freeway spaghetti junction, is excellent. I was just on a trip and couldn't get a rental car with GPS. Took my nuvi and it made things far easier. Easy to use, large screen, easy to view. I'm very happy with this purchase.
Pros: Big screen. Split screen feature terrific
Cons: Needs some version of a manual to present features. Have to explore, which isn't a great idea while driving.
This GPS replaced a Garmin 740. The 7" screen makes viewing much easier in my Expedition. The traffic function works much better than my old one. The lane assist function is great when exiting interstate or major highways. I would recommend this unit for anyone requiring a larger screen.
It is big. But it makes it easy to enter address.
Pros: Big. Easy to use.
Cons: Big. If you don't have a good place to put it, it could block your view.
U got to love a large screen, wish they had this one a long time ago, if this would ever break down i would have a new one before dinner the same day. This makes travel in unchartered territories a pleasure not a chore any more, forget the Atlas & the Arguments now it doesn't happen any more ye hah, one happy camper. You will never regret spending the money for this unit, One suggestion though get the optional sun shade for it it does really help.
Pros: I love it
Cons: None for me, but my wife wold like it if it came in "PINK" she said i can only imagine "yuck"........ Don't do it.......
I HAVE HAD TWO OTHER GPS, A NAVIGON AND A TOM TOM, THIS GARMIN BLOWS THE OTHERS AWAY. THE LARGE SCREEN MAKES VIEWING THE GPS EASY. THE VOICE COMANDS CAN BE HEARD EASILY, EVEN WITH THE RADIO ON. THE DIRECTIONS ARE PERCISE, AND CLEAR IT IS AS IF SOMEONE WERE READING THEM TO YOU. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED IF YOU PURCHASE THIS GPS!!!
Pros: LARGE SCREEN, GOOD VOLUME RANGE AND EASE OF USE.
Cons: HAVE NOT FOUND ANY YET.
Love it - full featured plus free upgrades and traffic!
I have had Garmin Streetpilots in the pass and I can honestly say WOW. This streepilot blew my mind. I can use voice comands to go anywhere without the use of using the touch screen. That means my hands do not leave the wheel and now I can focus on my driving. I would recommend this streetpilot to everyone and I have already told my friends what a great product. The cost is much less than I though it would be. I can not say any negitive about this product.
Pros: All aspects of this streetpilot are GREAT!

In select metropolitan areas, the nüvi 2797LMT will enter split screen mode to display the photoReal junction view, a realistic depiction of the junction, complete with road signs and brightly-colored arrows to indicate the proper lane for navigation. The Bird's Eye view also gives you a top-down view of upcoming interchanges.

Speed Limits: As you travel along a major road or street, the speed limit is displayed on the screen alongside of the vehicle's speed display. Where Am I?: The "Where Am I?" feature gives you instant access to important information in case of an emergency. When you touch the vehicle icon on the map screen, the "Where Am I?" feature provides the coordinates (including elevation) of your current position, plus the nearest address and intersections. There are also buttons to help you locate the nearest hospitals, police stations, gas stations, and roadside assistance. You can also save the location for future reference.
Up Ahead: As you travel along your route, the Up Ahead feature constantly indicates the location of nearby businesses, including gas, food, lodging, restrooms, parking, and banks and ATMs. The locations are shown as icons, some with brand logos, and when the icons are touched on the screen, details of the services are displayed, and you are given the opportunity to navigate to that address.
Garmin Locate: To assist you in finding your parked vehicle, the Garmin Locate feature saves your location to memory when you remove the device from the windshield mounting cradle while the device is on. You can search for your vehicle's location using the Last Spot button in the menu.
Destination Search: When the Where To? button is pressed, you can use the search tools to find your destination and plan your route. The search tools allow you to search for cities, addresses, intersections, or coordinates. The new Search Bar lets you directly enter a category, brand name, address, or city name. The unit's memory stores the last 50 locations you have found so you can quickly find a previous destination.
Garmin Garage: The unit offers your choice of eight standard icons to represent your vehicle. The online Garmin Garage offers dozens more vehicle icons that you can download for free. In addition, you can purchase icon and voice bundles with Star Wars (Yoda, Darth Vader), Sesame Street (Oscar, Cookie Monster, Ernie & Bert), and The Simpsons (Homer and Marge) themes.
trafficTrends: When the trafficTrends feature is enabled, the nüvi 2797LMT automatically records historic traffic data and uses that data to calculate more efficient routes. This information is sent to Garmin when you connect your device to myGarmin (your personal account site on the Garmin website) using your computer. Different routes may be calculated based on traffic trends for the day of the week or the time of day.
myTrends: In addition to the trafficTrends feature, myTrends also takes into account your personal driving habits and anticipates your route when calculating your ETA to your frequent destinations.
Trip Planner: You can create and save a trip with multiple destinations using the Trip Planner. Once you have entered your destinations, you can manually set them in the order of your preference, or allow the device to calculate the most efficient route. Trip itineraries can be saved in memory for future use.
Trip Computer: The trip information page displays your current speed and direction, and provides helpful statistics about your trip. Dual trip odometers keep up with your total mileage. The page also indicates the distance and driving time to your next maneuver, as well as the distance and driving time to your destination. Your maximum speed and moving average speed are also displayed. The information can be reset in advance of your next trip.
Where I've Been/Trip Log: The Where I've Been application allows you to view your previous routes and places you have stopped on the map. In addition, the device keeps a Trip Log, which is a record of the path you have traveled. The Travel History setting must be enabled in order for the Where I've Been and Trip Log features to function.
GPS Simulator: When indoors, you can activate the built-in GPS simulator and practice using the unit. This turns off the GPS receiver so it's not searching for satellites, saving battery power.
ecoRoute: The optional ecoRoute feature calculates the fuel economy and the fuel price of navigating to a destination, and offers tools for improving fuel efficiency. The ecoRoute application can be purchased from the Garmin Online Store.
Garmin Mechanic: This device is compatible with Garmin Mechanic with ecoRoute HD, which gives you real-time automotive diagnostic information right on the LCD screen. If you're asking about the ability to display your portable Garmin's GPS onto the Sony XAV-65 in-dash screen, that wouldn't be possible. The Garmin Portable units don't feature video output connections to display it onto an external monitor/screen. I hope that helps. Garmin nuvii 2797 LMT appears to be a preferred navigation device for tractor trailer drivers... per the Crutchfield marketing materials. I - by far - prefer the 2797 over my Toyota in dash navigation equipment due its current / updated mapping / road conditions, clear voice directions and VISIBILITY. I have driven a large motor home and understand the need for quality info and, although I don't do that any longer, think the Garmin updated info (imperative to keep updated) and clear directionality will significantly reduce your risks. Best regards and happy motoring.... [ Michael Dec 08, 2014 ]
We updated 2 units without any issues at all. We registered both and updated the maps easily, without any problem at all [ JOAN Mar 25, 2014 ]
wile it is true that you do have to register the product to get the latest map up dates I have found no problem with that. You get very good instructions and it is pretty straight forward. The map update process is the same. It does take time to do the updates but I have not had any problem with doing it. Again the instructions are pretty easy to follow. [ JON M Mar 25, 2014 ]
Hello Jon, the map update is no horror, i did mine on line and it was ok, upon receiving if you want to you can update your Garmin or not, i did mine and again it was ok for me, takes a bit of time depending how many updates there are, but you can choose to do some and not others is up to you, overall i love my Garmin, hope this help [ DAVID Mar 24, 2014 ]
Jon, that is not true. I bought this unit and it's ready to go out of the box. I also bought the weighted dash mount rather than using the included windshield suction Cup mount. I used this unit to drive from Indiana to the mountains in upstate New York. Worked flawlessly. I use it to find places all the time. I haven't tried updating it yet, but I haven't seen the need to update it yet. It has everything loaded. I use it a lot to find places in downtown Chicago and northwest Indiana. Not one single problem. Works so good, I bought another one for my parents this past Christmas and they love it too. I hope this helps. Chris [ CHRIS Mar 24, 2014 ]
Not true on both questions...I've had mine since July 2013 with no problems at all. [ MENDOLA KIERNAN Mar 24, 2014 ]
