Our take on the Garmin StreetPilot c330 GPS

In the StreetPilot c330, Garmin blends powerful satellite navigation capability with easy-to-use controls to bring you a navigation experience that's second to none. It'll guide you, turn by turn, everywhere you want to go, and to millions of places in between. Plus, it takes no time to program the system. Less effort equals more enjoyment for you.

The c330 comes loaded with all the maps you'll need to make traveling easy. You'll be able to access detailed route information for the entire U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. And you'll enjoy digging up points of interest like restaurants, gas stations, hotels along the way — over five million are stored on the c330. Wherever you go, you'll find something to do.

As you're driving along a programmed route, the vivid, 3.5" color screen's maps tells you where you're going and gives you turn information. Voice prompts informing you of upcoming turns are delivered over the pair of built-in speakers. You can select from two viewing modes: the traditional overhead, or an exciting, interactive, 3-D ground-level view. To program your destination, you can enter a street address, intersection, or street name, or search by point of interest. You can also modify your route preferences, such as avoiding toll roads or ferries.

The internal, rechargeable battery keeps you going for hours, and allows you to use c330 outside the vehicle, too. A power adapter for the car is also included. You'll be able to mount the c330 in the car easily with the included suction-cup mount.

Features

Product Overview: The Garmin StreetPilot c330 is a compact, portable automotive navigation unit with a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver. It continually tracks and uses up to 12 satellites to compute and update your position every second. With the built-in basemap and pre-loaded map software, the StreetPilot c330 can automatically calculate a route and provide turn-by-turn directions and voice prompts.

Built-in Basemap: The unit has a built-in Americas Lite Routable basemap of North America and South America containing state and country boundaries, lakes, rivers, streams, airports, cities, towns, and coastlines. It also contains airports, railroads, state and interstate highways, local thoroughfares and secondary roads within metro areas, federal interstate highway exit information for services such as food, lodging and truck, RV and automotive service stations.

Pre-loaded Maps: The StreetPilot c330 comes pre-programmed with City Select North America NT maps. These maps contain detailed road maps throughout the entire United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, and includes nearly 6,000,000 Points of Interest (POIs) such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, attractions, and ATMs.

Satellite Status: Once the GPS receiver in the StreetPilot has collected the necessary data to calculate a fix, the status field indicates a 2D or 3D status. A 2D status means that at least three satellites with good geometry have been locked onto, and a two-dimensional position fix (latitude and longitude) is calculated. A 3D status means that at least four satellites with good geometry have been locked onto, and your position is calculated in latitude, longitude, and elevation.

GPS Accuracy: This unit's GPS positioning capability is accurate to less than 15 meters (49 feet). When WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) is enabled, accuracy is less than 3 meters (9.75 feet).

Touchscreen Display: The unit features a bright, 3.5" (diagonal), 16-bit LCD with touch screen. The display has a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, with an aspect ratio of 4:3 and 64,000 colors. The screen has a manual brightness adjustment. The screen-width scale is 640 feet to 4,000 miles.

Custom Points of Interest: The StreetPilot c330 will accept custom points of interest (POI) databases, available from various companies on the Internet. Some custom POI databases contain alert information for points such as safety cameras and school zones, and the unit can notify you as you approach one of these points. To download custom POIs, you will need the Garmin POI Loader software, available on Garmin's website.

Information Pages: The information provided by the StreetPilot c330 is found on various display screens called pages. Each page gives you the following information:

  • Map:
    • Indicates real-time moving map illustrating your current position and intended route
    • Shows map scale and geographic details such as lakes, rivers, highways and towns
    • Allows you to zoom, pan and point using the touchscreen controls
    • When no destination entered, customized data tabs provide navigation detail, including moving direction, speed, time of day, and approaching streets
    • When destination entered, customized data tabs provide driving instructions, distance and time to next turn, distance and ETA to final destination
  • Trip Computer:
    • Shows current compass heading while moving
    • Indicates current speed, average driving speed, overall average speed, maximum speed
    • Calculates driving time, stopped time and total time
  • Turn List:
    • Displays a list of turn-by-turn instructions for your entire route as well as arrival information
    • Shows direction of each turn, distance and time to each turn, plus exit/route numbers and street/highway names
    • Touch text bar of the turn to see map detail of the turn

Where To? During navigation, you can search for places by pressing "Menu", then "Where To?". You can select an Address, Food, Lodging, My Locations (including recent finds), Fuel, Intersections, Attractions, Shopping, Parking, Entertainment, Recreation, Community, Cities, Hospitals, Transit or Auto Services. You can also access Spell Name for direct entry of your new destination, or browse the map. You can search for locations near your present location (default), or select a different city, your current route, or your destination.

Avoid: You can program the unit to avoid certain things that may be undesirable on your route. Examples of things that can be avoided include U-Turns, Toll Roads, Unpaved Roads, and Major Highways.

Waypoints: You can manually mark and name any map position as a "waypoint" for later recall. The StreetPilot c330 can hold up to 500 waypoints with names and graphic symbols.

Map Orientation: You can select one of three map orientation displays:

  • 2D Track Up: Two-dimensional map which constantly displays the route from top to bottom on the screen.
  • 3D Track Up: Three-dimensional map which constantly displays the route from top to bottom on the screen.
  • 2D North Up: Two-dimensional map which constantly displays North at the top of the screen.

Screen Color Mode: You can select one of three color modes for the display screen:

  • Daytime: has a lighter, brighter background
  • Nighttime: has a black background, easier to see at night
  • Auto: display automatically switches between daytime and nighttime at sunrise and sunset

Indoor Use: When indoors, you can activate the built-in simulator and practice using the unit. This turns off the GPS receiver so it's not searching for satellites.

Power Requirements: The StreetPilot c330 operates on your vehicle's battery using the included 12-volt cigarette lighter power adapter, the built-in Lithium-Ion batteries, or an optional AC adapter (available directly from Garmin). The Lithium-Ion batteries provide up to approximately 8 hours of use. Stored data, such as waypoints or unit settings, are not lost when the unit is disconnected from a power source.

Antenna: The built-in patch antenna is located in the unit's top panel. An optional external antenna may be needed when operating the unit with a coated windshield or an in-screen heating system which can block the GPS signal. The unit has an external GPS antenna jack with an MCX-type connector.

Mounting Options: The unit should be securely installed when used in a vehicle. The unit features an integrated mounting bracket which includes a suction cup. The suction cup can be used to mount the unit to the windshield or to the dash (using the Dash Mounting Disk). Once the StreetPilot c330 is mounted, it can be tilted forward or backward and rotated for best visibility. Note: If you're not using a remote antenna, the unit must be installed where it has a relatively unobstructed view of the sky.

Interface Capability: This unit can be connected to a PC via the supplied USB cable. This interface allows you to download additional map information to the unit's flash memory. The supplied CD-ROM USB driver must first be installed on your PC before connecting the unit via the USB cable. Note: The unit's USB port is USB 2.0 Full Speed compatible.

The Price Is Right!

Written By markj, NJ on Thursday, August 10, 2006

Excellent features and price point. I did my research and found the Garmin covered the most important feature and that is getting me from point A to point B.

The unit is easy to program and easy to update via my PC. The battery life is more than adequate when you need to use it where there is no power source.

The mount is well designed and easy to use in my car.

The screen for the most part is easy to see and read in all normal light and dark conditions. Sun glare at times will cause the screen to be faded but the combination of voice prompts and on screen guide get me to my destination every time.

I like the Recent and Favorites list. Makes routinely traveled locations a breeze to program.

I would not want to be driving without this Garmin again. I highly recommend getting one.

It's Great

Written By Jimmy, NC on Friday, July 07, 2006

Got it before a beach trip. Works right out of the box. I was using it without even reading the instructions. It found all locations I was looking for and was right on. You can download a "Updater" program from Garmin and use the USB cable for updates. I tried it and there was already a map update available, so it loaded it. Truely simple.

In 1 week I have become addicted!!!

Written By Chris, Anderson, SC on Tuesday, May 30, 2006

I figured I would give one of these jewels a try. My new job isn't necessarily traveling sales but has put me in my car more than normal. I only travel about a 35 miles area but some of the areas are very unfamiliar to me.

I did like the other reviews said, fired it up straight out of the box. It is the easiest device I have used. I never thought the 'points of interest' was a big deal but it makes it so much easier if you know a landmark near your destination that you can click on in a matter of seconds.

I use this around town and use it for fun. I test routes that I have been driving for years only to find the GPS gives me a variation of a better route that I thought would have been longer. It worked great and has changed many of my around town routes.

The only negative I have is that the map is a bit outdated. I needed to pay my cable bill and found the location in the point of interest. They had moved years ago but I figured the map would have updated. It took me to the old closed down location. It also has my subdivision a little wrong and shows my house on the wrong street. You need to use a little common sense on these things. I am trying to get an update from Garmin but haven't figured out their site yet.

This thing is so small and convenient. My wife thinks I have become a nerd because I use it everywhere we go. I visited a new subdivision under construction and added it to my favorites by sitting at the entrance to the site and giving it a name. Now I can give exact directions to contractors to a site that doesn't even exist!

In all I am very impressed with this device. I am addicted!

SO Easy...SO visual

Written By Kristopher, Palmer Ma on Thursday, May 18, 2006

I am sitting on my couch the first time I took it out of the box. It updates, then the unit was so easy to use. I never needed a manual, website or anything to aid me on my new directed journeys! For the dollar value, it is insane. Even my sales associate told me this is the way to travel. Easy, Bright, Dummy-proof. This is how I will rank this unit!

Wonderful GPS

Written By DR, Louisiana on Wednesday, March 22, 2006

Easy to use GPS. very user friendly. Addresses are easy to find, routes are calculated quickly. Even a cross country route is executed within a matter of seconds. List of POI's is not perfect but is very thorough (at least in my area) and includes phone numbers. Everything about this machine is fast. Inputs, reroutes, satellite acquisition. My only complaint is this: the mount, while well built and stable, has an integrated plug. The c330 itself has a battery, but the plug was not designed to detach from the mount.

Great Device

Written By Marc, Centerport NY on Monday, March 20, 2006

This is a device well worth the money. Out of the box it is ready to go, already charged. The directions are not needed as the device is super intuitive. I was able to program addresses in seconds. the unit also re-calculates directions if you go off course. Graphics are super and the voice turn by turn alerts you with more than enough time. It also has trip features that were interesting like: total time in motion, total time stopped, max speed, trip etc. Great Device worth every penny.

dont leave home without it

Written By katikya, baltimore, MD on Monday, December 26, 2005

Im a handy man and I go around a lot. What is hard about my work is that i have this talent for getting lost. Not very efficient for my job specially with a big v8 truck and todays gas prices. Thats how it was until i got this C330 as present from my wife. I tried hard to disorient this thing to no avail. It just keeps on finding its way. Very easy to use. i was actually disappointed because it was good to go straght from the box. No more tinkering with the parameters so and so. One thing i dont like about it is the stiff power cord which always gets in your way. Great product. I would highly recommend it to anybody who cant leave breadcrumbs behind them.

BEST VALUE OF ANY GPS

Written By Aaron, Manitowoc, WI on Sunday, November 27, 2005

Throw away the owners manual, you won't need it. Simple common sense is all you need to navigate through the navigation. Maps are 100% accurate, many POI's loaded, and updates are a breeze. So simple it made me giggle. For me, a techie, its great because this is the one device I don't want to have to mess around with- I want to press a few buttons and go. For someone who can't work a toaster, this would be a great gift for them because its even easier to use than a toaster!

Don't waste your money on another Nav system

Written By Jeff, Sykesville, MD on Saturday, July 16, 2005

After being told the C330 had nothing on the Magellan Roadmate 700 or the Garmin 2620, I still chose the C330 on price alone. Probably the smartest thing I ever did. The C330 is extremely easy to use - didn't even need the owners manual. I was really impressed with the detail and accuracy of the maps. I believe purchasing one of the higher end units is overkill. The C330 has everything one would need, at a much lower price.
