The fish are biting somewhere, and if you're serious about catching your fair share, a chartplotter/fishfinder like the Garmin echoMAP 50s is an essential piece of equipment for the serious angler.

Find those fish, wherever you're fishing

Garmin echoMAP 50s

Garmin echoMAP 50s chartplotter/fishfinder

The echoMAP 50s comes with a transducer designed for use on inland or shallow water, so it's ideal for your bass boat or center console vessel. This all-in-one fisherman's friend packs plenty of high-tech features into a compact package built to withstand the marine environment. It comes with a worldwide base map, and you can also choose models loaded with Garmin's U.S. lakes or offshore cartography. Use the dual microSD™ card slots to add more maps when you need to.

The echoMAP 50s combines a 5" VGA chartplotter display with an advanced echo HD-ID™ fishfinder, so if the fish are down there, you'll see them — day or night. Garmin also worked hard to come up with an intuitive interface that makes it easier to access all the great features built into the 50s. The split screen lets you see sonar and GPS information at the same time, so you'll have the information you need right in front of you.

Super-fast and super-accurate

Thanks to the integrated 10Hz GPS/GLONASS receiver, this Garmin refreshes position and heading information up to 10 times per second, giving you accurate, real-time readings. The echoMAP 50s uses sonar recording to coordinate the timing of the sonar return in relation to the boat's position, which ensures that each of your available 5000 waypoints is accurate — an absolute must when you're pinpointing your next hot fishing spot.

A powerful transducer, and more

The echoMAP 50s comes with a dual-beam transducer that transmits a 77/200 kHz signal and scans depths of up to 1900 feet in fresh water or 700 feet in salt water. Big, clear darts help you see the fish when you find them, while Garmin's Ultrascroll® displays fish clearly, even when you're cruising at higher speeds. If the fish are playing hard-to-get, the built-in See-thru® technology helps you find them under rock outcroppings, submerged tree trunks, and other hiding spots.

Built-in AutoGain minimizes clutter and maximizes useful information about the fish you're trying to find. The echoMAP 50s also gives you handy information like tide tables, sun/moon information, and water temperature, so you'll be able to combine old-school knowledge with the latest technology.

Go wireless, but stay connected

The echoMAP 50s offers wireless connectivity capability, so you can connect and access marine-specific apps using your smartphone or tablet. It's also designed to support AIS for tracking purposes and also supports DSC when used in conjunction with a DSC-capable VHF radio.

Echomap 50s w/sounder

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great unit that is easy to use and intuitive. Additionally, the price was very reasonable for the plotter and sounder combo. However, I wish the description would have made it more clear that useful maps were not loaded on the unit, they need to be purchased separately. I believe highlighting this fact would be helpful for the consumer.

Pros: Tons of easy to use features with great display.

Cons: No per loaded useable maps for the chart plotter.

Fishfinder Features

Overview: The Garmin echoMAP 50s is a combination chartplotter and fishfinder. It has detailed maps of US lakes, plus dual microSD slots for adding more specialized and detailed charts and maps that are available from Garmin. The echoMAP 50s has a 5" (diagonal) full color display, and can be mounted in a variety of ways. The fishfinder has a 500-watt, dual-frequency sonar transducer that lets you search for fish to a maximum depth of 1900 feet in fresh water or 700 feet in salt water.

Display: The echoMAP 50s has a 3" (wide) x 4" (high), 5" diagonal full color VGA display with 480 x 640 pixels. It has a variable backlight adjustment (automatic or manual), with day and night color schemes that change automatically or you can set manually. Unlike portable GPS units for highway navigation, this unit does not have a touchscreen display.

GPS/GLONASS: The echoMAP 50s has a built-in GPS receiver that collects data from overhead satellites to establish your current location. The GPS signal strength is indicated on the top of the screen in a bar graph (5 bars maximum). The device is equipped with a 10Hz GPS/GLONASS receiver which refreshes its position and heading up to 10 times per second. In addition, the unit coordinates the timing of the sonar return in relation to the boat's position to give you amazingly accurate waypoints or for pinpointing fishing hotspots.

Charts and Maps: The unit includes Lake Vü mapping, which covers over 17,000 lakes across the United States, over 400 with 1-foot contours. It also has a basic imagery map of the world (WorldWide Shaded Relief Map 8.00). Garmin BlueChart g2 Coastal maps are available on microSD or download. Charts of Canada's inland lakes are also available for purchase.

Wireless Connectivity: The echoMAP 50s has wireless connectivity capability, allowing you to connect and access marine-specific apps via your iPhone or iPad. You can configure the unit as a Wi-Fi hotspot and communicate with your device.

Fishfinder Features

HD-ID Sonar: Garmin's exclusive HD-ID target tracking technology provides enhanced separation and definition of the images on the screen. It shows exceptional structure detail and clear bottom contours. The unit shows suspended targets as sonar "arches" or as fish symbols with (or without) depth information.

Transducer: The dual-frequency (200 kHz/77 kHz) transducer transmits sound waves through the water and receives them to relay information to the display. The 200 kHz frequency shows better detail, has a narrower beam (60°) and is typically used in shallower waters. The 77 kHz frequency penetrates deep water more effectively, and has a wider beam (120°), so it can be used to cover a larger area. The transducer has an attached 30' cable to accommodate large or small boats. The transducer can be mounted either to the transom of the boat, or to the bottom of your trolling motor. Mounting hardware for both locations is included.

Viewing Pages: The echoMAP 50s' sonar display scrolls from right to left to show the sonar readings from the transducer. The bottom depth is displayed in large numerals, along with the water temperature, and water speed. The unit has an adjustable depth range (Auto or manual 5' to 5000'), and the depth scale is shown at the bottom of the screen, along with the transducer frequency. You can choose from a full screen page or split pages:

  • Full Screen Page: The Full Screen page shows a full-view graph of the sonar readings from the transducer.
  • Split Zoom Page: The Split Zoom page shows a full-view graph of the sonar readings on the right side of the screen, and a magnified portion of that graph on the left side.
  • Split Frequency Page: The Split Frequency page shows the 77 kHz frequency sonar data, while the right side shows the 200 kHz frequency sonar data.

A-Scope: The A-Scope is a vertical flasher along the right side of the Full Screen page that shows the range to targets in real time along a scale. This view expands the most recently received sonar data so that it is easier to see. It can also be helpful in detecting fish that are located close to the bottom.

Sonar Alarms: The echoMAP 50s lets you set up alarms for different situations that may occur:

  • Shallow Water: The unit will alarm when the water depth is shallower that the set value.
  • Deep Water: The unit will alarm when the water depth is deeper than the set value.
  • Water Temperature: The unit will alarm when the water temperature varies more than +/- 2°F.
