About the Garmin Edge® 810 Performance Bundle

Ken Nail

Make the most of your rides

Garmin's Edge 810 is an impressive cycling computer, but this performance bundle adds to its capabilities by including a heart-rate monitor strap, cadence sensor, and GPS cable. The included heart rate monitor lets the Edge 810 record your pulse, so you can train in the proper heart-rate zone to optimize your workout. The cadence sensor records your pedal strokes so you can optimize your pedaling RPMs, smoothing out your ride and your effort. And the Edge 810's customizable touchscreen displays just the info that you want to see while you're riding. The Edge 810 is also compatible with ANT+-enabled power meters (not included) so you can track your power output in watts when you ride — one of the most effective training methods available.

Garmin Edge 810 performance bundle

The Edge 810 cycling computer is an impressive training tool.

The Edge 810's high-sensitivity GPS receiver records speed, distance, time, plus ascent and descent. A built-in barometric altimeter yields precise elevation measurements. You can compare successive rides over the same route with the Courses feature, and you can compete against past performances. The 810's screen also displays Auto Pause, Auto Lap and temperature readings.

Navigation aids

The Edge 810 features base maps to aid your navigation, plus the option to purchase detailed street view and topo maps. The navigation tools will save your current location, so it's easy to backtrack if you take a wrong turn on unfamiliar roads. And if you set your Edge 810 to navigate to a preset location, you'll get turn-by-turn directions you can customize by road type (requires optional routable maps). Navigation's a useful feature if you're a cyclist interested in long-distance touring or training rides. You can update the base map to detailed street or topo maps through the Edge 810's micro SD card slot.

Smartphone connectivity

The Edge 810 taps into the power of your iOS® or Android™ smartphone with a suite of features accessed through the free Garmin Connect™ Mobile app. You'll enjoy features like live tracking, social media sharing, and weather reports, both during and after your ride.  Plus, the Edge 810 transfers ride data to your smartphone via Bluetooth®, so you can share the details with your circle of friends immediately. If you're out on a long ride or race, your friends and family can follow your progress with real-time map updates on the Garmin Connect web site or mobile app. You can quickly check iffy weather conditions on the Edge 810's screen, while leaving your smartphone safe and dry in your pocket or jacket. And you can operate the Edge 810 touchscreen with gloved fingers and in wet conditions, too.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Garmin Edge 810 is a compact, GPS-enabled advanced bicycle computer with connected features, such as live tracking, social media sharing, weather, and the ability to send and receive courses. It contains a built-in basemap for navigation, and has a microSD card slot for adding detailed street maps and topo maps. This Performance Bundle adds the Premium Heart Rate Monitor, GSC 10 Speed/Cadence Sensor, and the Out-Front Bike Mount, plus City Navigator NT detailed street maps on microSD. The Edge 810 is waterproof (IPX7 rated), and comes with two standard handlebar mounts so you can mount it on multiple bikes.

Touchscreen Display: The Edge 810 has a 2.6" backlit color touchscreen LCD (1.4"W x 2.2"H), with a display resolution of 160 x 240 pixels. You can maneuver through the menus and make selections directly on the touchscreen display. The display can show navigation maps along with your speed and distance, or show your elapsed time, speed, distance, elevation, and total ascent. With attached accessories, your pedaling cadence, calories burned, and heart rate can also appear on the display.

GPS: The Edge 810 has a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with HotFix satellite prediction to calculate your position faster. When you turn on the unit outdoors, it finds satellites quickly, so you can start your ride quicker. The time of day and the date are automatically set by the GPS receiver. If training indoors, you can turn off the GPS receiver to save battery power.

Navigation: The Edge 810 is equipped with a basemap, and comes with the City Navigator NT maps on a microSD card. The device is also compatible with optional topographical maps. The maps, in combination with the GPS, can guide you while you're touring, commuting, competing, or working out.

Smartphone Compatible: You can wirelessly link your device to a smartphone (Android or iOS) using the Garmin Connect Mobile app. At the end of your ride, you can transfer the ride data directly to your phone via Bluetooth. Using the app, you can analyze the details of your ride, or share it with others. You can also search out courses and workouts stored at Garmin Connect, download them to your smartphone, and send them to your Edge 810 wirelessly. Real-time weather updates and alerts can be sent from your smartphone to your device.

Live Tracking: Another connected feature of the Edge 810, Live Tracking, allows your friends and family to follow your races and training activities in real time. You can invite your followers via email or social media to view your live data on the Garmin Connect tracking page. Once they see your invitation, they can click to follow your progress on a map and see your stats.

Controls: Most of the controls are located on the touchscreen. On the Home screen, you can access your bike profile, change your activity profile, manage your history, courses, and workouts, and start a new ride. During your ride, you can use the front panel buttons to start/stop the timer and mark a new lap without having to look at the screen. The power and backlight button is located on the side.

Waterproof: The Edge 810 is waterproof to IEC Standard 60529 IPX7. It can withstand immersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The casing is totally sealed, including the front-mounted controls, and the microSD card slot and USB port have a water-resistant cover to prevent corrosion.

ANT+: ANT+ is a wireless technology that allows certain accessories to communicate with the Edge 810. ANT+ sensors generally work within 10 feet of the unit. In addition, an increasing number of health clubs and fitness centers have ANT+ compatible equipment in their facilities, so you can use the same accessories separate from your device. The included Garmin ANT+ accessories include:

  • Heart Rate Monitor: When the Edge 810 is paired with the Premium Heart Rate Monitor, the unit tracks your heart beats per minute and calculates your calorie consumption as you train. You can train in a certain heart rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performances.
  • Speed/Cadence Sensor: The GSC 10 Speed/Cadence Sensor measures your speed and pedaling strokes per minute. The Edge 810 has a Non-Zero Averaging option to let you include or exclude the zero values (when you're not pedaling) when calculating your power ratings.

Auto Pause: The built-in timer will pause automatically when it detects you're not moving. The timer will restart when you resume your ride.

Auto Lap: The Auto Lap feature lets you automatically mark the lap at a specific position. This helps you compare your performance over different parts of a ride (i.e. a long climb or training sprints). You can also use Auto Lap to mark laps at a specific distance.

Data Storage: The Edge 810's built-in memory (approximately 50 MB) stores at least 180 hours of ride data. The unit not only has an odometer to keep track of your mileage, but includes data on your last ride, longest ride, fastest ride, and all rides. Ride data can be sent to your smartphone via Bluetooth using the Garmin Connect app.

User Profile: The Edge 810 allows you to enter data about yourself to create a User Profile. This data (gender, birth year, weight, and height) is used to calculate accurate ride data.

Bike Profile: In addition to User Profiles, the Edge 810 allows you to customize ten bike profiles. In order to accurately calculate the ride data, the bike weight, odometer value, crank length, and wheel size are used.

Garmin Connect: Free web-based Garmin Connect software lets you store your workout data for comprehensive analysis. Garmin Connect is used by cyclists worldwide, and presents your data in an easily understood manner, with maps, reports, and suggested activities. You can create fitness goals and send them to your device. As you complete activities toward your goals, they are tracked on both the device and on Garmin Connect. In addition, the Garmin Training Center software lets you track and analyze your fitness activities and create workouts to send to your device, without requiring Internet access after the initial download.

Compatibility: The Edge 810 can be used as a USB mass storage device. It can be used with most recent Windows and Mac operating systems. It is not compatible with Windows 95, 98, Me, or NT. It is also not compatible with MAC OS 10.3 and earlier.

Courses: The Edge 810 can save your ride data as you train. From that saved data, you can use Garmin Connect software to create courses that you can follow in the future. Each time you follow the course, the unit will compare your time to previous rides, or to other riders, and let you set performance goals. As you ride along the course, the display will indicate distance and time to upcoming maneuvers.

Virtual Partner: During your workout, you can use the Virtual Partner to help you meet your goals. The Virtual Partner rides along with you and provides incentive for you to keep up or stay ahead. If necessary, you can adjust the speed of the Virtual Partner during the ride.

USB Port: A Mini-B USB port is provided on the back of the unit for charging and connecting to your computer. A water-resistant cap keeps moisture out. The Edge 810 is compatible with USB 2.0 Full Speed.

Power Requirements: The unit is powered by a built-in Lithium-Ion battery. It charges via the included USB cable when connected to your computer or the included AC adapter. The battery charge level is expressed as a percentage on the display. Under typical usage, the battery life is approximately 15 hours. Extremely cold temperatures will also reduce battery life. An optional, plug-in external battery pack can add another 20 hours of battery life.

Mounting: The Edge 810 can be mounted to your bicycle's handlebars or stem. Two sizes of O-rings are included for best fit. Two complete mounts are included to allow you to use the unit on multiple bikes. The included Out-Front Bike Mount lets you put the device in front of the handlebars for easier, heads-up positioning and increased safety.
