About the Garmin Edge 25

Ken Nail

Performance in a small package

Avid cyclists will tell you that GPS cycling computers have changed the game. Old-school computers were a mess of wires, sensors, and magnets, prone to malfunction and misadjustment. With GPS, just clip the computer into its mount and you've got accurate info right in front of you, plus the added benefit of reviewable maps and elevation data post-ride. Garmin's packed these advantages into the compact Edge 25, simply the smallest, lightest, and maybe most convenient cycling computer around.

Enjoy the ride

Edge 25 sports a high-sensitivity GPS receiver that records speed, distance, and time, plus ascent and descent — the screen's customizable so you can arrange the data fields to suit your desires. And you can compare successive rides over the same route with the Courses feature — even create and download courses with Garmin Connect, complete with turn-by-turn directions.

Edge 25 also pairs via Bluetooth with many smartphones, so your family and friends can track you during your ride. You can even receive notifications of incoming calls and text messages.  And when it's paired with a heart rate monitor (not included), you can take your training to the next level by tracking your heart rate, letting you train in the proper heart-rate zone to optimize your workout.

Analyze and share

When you get home, Edge 25 will transfer your ride data wirelessly into your computer for the full story on your ride, including maps that track your performance with detailed pace and elevation charts, along with data from a heart-rate monitor. And you can join the online community at Garmin Connect™ to share your data with others.

More details on the Garmin Edge 25

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Garmin Edge 25 is a compact, GPS-enabled bicycle computer that records how far, how fast, and where you ride. It has connected features that enable you to share details of your ride via Garmin Connect, including live tracking. The Edge 25 is waterproof (IPX7 rated), and comes with two standard handlebar mounts, so you can mount it on multiple bikes.

Display: The Edge 25 has a backlit monochrome LCD (0.9" x 0.9"), with a display resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. The display can show the time, distance, and speed of your ride. Total ascent and calories burned are recorded while the timer is running. When using an optional Heart Rate Monitor, the unit will display your beats per minute and heart rate zone.

GPS Navigation: The Edge 25 has a built-in high-sensitivity GPS receiver. Courses can be sent from your Garmin Connect account to your device so you can navigate the course. This allows you to follow the same course and compare your performance to past rides. The time of day and the date can be manually set, or set automatically by the GPS receiver. Up to 10 rides can be saved in the device's history.

GLONASS: In challenging environments, the Edge 25 can use GLONASS in addition to GPS for faster position location data. GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is a Russian-operated satellite based navigation system similar to GPS (Global Positioning System), and can be used as an alternative. You can turn GLONASS on or off as needed.

Controls: The controls are located on the outer edges of the device. Four buttons are provided: Power/Backlight, Start/Stop Timer, Scroll the Menu, and Mark New Lap/Return to Previous screen.

Waterproof: The Edge 25 is waterproof to IEC Standard 60529 IPX7. It can withstand immersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The casing is totally sealed, including the side-mounted controls.

Auto Pause: The built-in timer will pause automatically when it detects you're not moving. The timer will restart when you resume your ride.

Auto Lap: The Auto Lap feature lets you automatically mark the lap at a specific position. This helps you compare your performance over different parts of a ride (i.e. a long climb or training sprints). You can also use Auto Lap to mark laps at a specific distance.

User Profile: The Edge 25 allows you to enter data about yourself to create a User Profile. This data (gender, birth year, weight, and height) is used to calculate accurate ride data.

ANT+ Sensors: The Edge 25 is compatible with optional ANT+ sensors, such as heart rate monitors, speed sensors, and cadence sensors. ANT+ sensors automatically pair to the Edge 25 and wirelessly transmit data to the device as long as the activity is taking place.

Garmin Connect: Free web-based Garmin Connect software lets you store your workout data for comprehensive analysis. Garmin Connect is used by cyclists worldwide, and presents your data in an easily understood manner, with maps, reports, and suggested activities.

Connected Features: The Edge 25 is compatible with most Bluetooth 4.0-capable smart devices running iOS 7.0 and above, or Android 4.3 and above. The device has the following connected features for your smartphone or mobile device, via the Garmin Connect mobile app:

  • Live Track: You can invite friends and family through social media to follow your races and training activities in real time. Live data can be seen on the Garmin Connect tracking page.
  • Activity Uploads: The details of your ride are automatically sent to the Garmin Connect mobile app as soon as you finish recording the activity.
  • Social Media: When you upload your activities to the Garmin Connect mobile app, you can automatically post updates to Facebook, Twitter, or other social media websites.
  • Notifications: When you receive a text message or phone call, an alert is sent to the Edge 25 for display.

Courses: The Edge 25 can save your ride data as you train. From that saved data, you can use Garmin Connect software to create courses that you can follow in the future. Each time you follow the course, the unit will compare your time to previous rides, or to other riders, and let you set performance goals. As you ride along the course, the display will indicate distance and time to upcoming maneuvers.

Virtual Races: Downloaded courses contain segments that can be used as virtual race courses. As you ride, you can race against a segment, comparing your performance to past activities, connections in your Garmin Connect account, or other members of the Garmin Connect community.

Power Requirements: The unit is powered by a built-in Lithium-Ion battery. It charges via the included charging cradle/USB cable when connected to your computer or a USB charging port. Under typical usage, the battery life is approximately 8 hours on a full charge.

Mounting: The Edge 25 can be mounted to your bicycle's handlebars. Two sizes of O-rings are included for best fit. Two complete standard mounts are included to allow you to use the unit on multiple bikes. Optional mounts, such as the Extended Out-Front Bike Mount, are compatible with the Edge 25.
