Don't hit the trail without a reliable companion close by — in this case, as close as your wrist. Don't worry about hitting the drink on a stream crossing, either — fenix 2 is waterproof to 50 meters.

The fenix 2 boasts special features for use with swim training and skiing too. This watch tracks your distance, pace, stroke count and more when you're in the pool. And when you clip into your skis or snowboard, the Ski-Board mode tracks your speed, distance, vertical drop and your total runs — even pausing automatically when you're in the lift line. fenix 2 even works as a remote control for Garmin's VIRB™ and VIRB Elite action cameras.

Garmin fenix

fenix 2 includes a built-in altimeter, barometer, and compass.

Track your progress

Before you take off on your adventure, use Garmin's free Base Camp software to plan your trip on your computer, then upload it to fenix 2. You can take advantage of waypoints you've recorded on previous trips, so you'll be sure to find that special campsite the next time around. When you're on the trail, fenix 2 drips virtual breadcrumbs along the way, creating a tracklog you can retrace if necessary. The watch's memory can store up to 1000 waypoints, so you can record trail junctions, water sources, scenic vistas, camp sites — any location you want. You can share data with other Garmin devices and compatible smartphones through the ANT+ or Bluetooth links.

Direction, altitude, and weather

fenix 2 comes equipped with an altimeter, barometer, and compass, giving you valuable information you may need in the backcountry. You can also add the optional tempe™ external temperature sensor for accurate real-time temperature data. It's a cool way to keep track of the temperature outside your tent at night.

For all your training needs

fenix 2 is at home around town — not just in the wild. This full-featured watch boasts fitness features like AutoLap and AutoPause, and it also works with Garmin's HRM-Run™ monitor, providing data for cadence, ground contact time and vertical oscillation. And it's compatible with ANT+ heartrate monitors and bike sensors, so you can incorporate it into your fitness routine for running, cycling, or multisport training.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Garmin fēnix 2 is an advanced training watch with a high-sensitivity GPS receiver which accurately pinpoints and tracks your location while you're skiing, hiking, running, biking, or swimming. You can create routes to follow, or track where you've been. In addition, the fēnix 2 tracks your distance and pace as you work out. You can upload the results of your activities to the Garmin Connect online community.

Water Resistant: The fēnix 2 has a 5 ATM water rating, which means it can withstand pressures equivalent to a depth of 50 meters (164 feet). Not only can you wear the device in the rain and wet weather, you can even swim with it. The device also has a wide operating temperature range of -4° to 122°F.

Interchangeable Wristbands: The fēnix 2 has a durable polyurethane wristband. A fabric wrist strap with hook-and-loop fasteners is also included, along with the tools required to change the wristbands. The fabric wrist strap is long enough to strap it over the top of a heavy jacket.

LCD: The fēnix 2 features a 1.2" diameter monochrome LCD screen with a resolution of 70 x 70 pixels, and a highly visible negative black display. The display has a red backlight that comes on for 15 seconds when you press the Light button. The display provides the elapsed time of your activity, your pace, distance traveled, and whether you are ahead or behind your target pace. Other screens provide your recovery time, an altimeter, a barometer, a compass, and the temperature.

High-Sensitivity GPS Receiver: The unit features a high-sensitivity GPS receiver which will stay locked onto satellites, even near tall buildings or under tree cover.

Accelerometer: The built-in accelerometer can accurately calculate your speed and distance when running indoors or on a treadmill, when the GPS can't be used. The accelerometer is self-calibrating, and the speed and distance accuracy improves after a few outdoors runs using GPS. In many cases, a separate foot pod is not needed.

Rechargeable Battery: The fēnix 2 has a built-in 500 mAh Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery, which will give you up to 16 hours battery life in normal GPS mode, or 50 hours in the UltraTrac GPS mode with a one-minute polling interval. When not training, you can use the device as a digital watch for up to 5 weeks on a single charge. A 41" data/charging cradle is provided for charging the battery and uploading your training data. An AC adapter is provided for charging the battery via standard household current.

Navigation: The fēnix 2 provides advanced navigation and tracking functions, utilizing the built-in GPS and altimeter, barometer, and compass. It can record a track log to show you where you've been, leaving a "bread crumb" trail along the way. You can mark and save up to 1,000 waypoints, 50 routes, 10,000 track points, and 100 tracks in the built-in 20 MB memory.

Bluetooth Connected Features: The Garmin fēnix 2 features Bluetooth wireless technology that allows you to pair the device to your smartphone or mobile device through the Garmin Connect Mobile app. When connected via Bluetooth, you can do the following:

  • Live Track: Your friends and family can follow your races and training activities in real time on the Garmin Connect tracking page. You can also invite others to follow via email or social media. (You must have your phone paired to the device throughout your run for Live Tracking.)
  • Automatic Uploads: When your workout is completed, you can automatically upload the stored data from your activity to Garmin Connect.
  • BaseCamp Mobile: You can send activities to your smartphone running the BaseCamp Mobile app. You can also back up your saved activities to your Garmin Cloud account using BaseCamp Mobile. For future activities, you can browse adventures in BaseCamp mobile, and send them to the fēnix 2.
  • Phone Notifications: When you receive notifications and messages on your phone, they are displayed on the fēnix 2.

Add-on Sensors: The fēnix 2 can be used with wireless 2.4 GHz ANT+ add-on sensors, such as the optional HRM-Run Heart Rate Monitor. The optional Foot Pod, available from Garmin, can work with the fēnix 2 to monitor your distance and cadence when you're running indoors or when GPS cannot be used. The optional Bike Cadence Sensor can feed bike speed and cadence data to the device during your ride. The device is also compatible with the tempe temperature sensor.

Optional HRM-Run Heart Rate Monitor: The optional HRM-Run is an advanced heart rate monitor with a built-in accelerometer. It works with the fēnix 2 to monitor your heart rate and your running form to give you advanced analysis of your workout, including oxygen consumption and recovery time. The accelerometer measures torso movement to calculate three running metrics: Cadence (number of steps per minute), Vertical Oscillation (the bounce in your running motion, measured in centimeters), and Ground Contact Time (amount of time in each step that your foot spends on the ground while running, measured in milliseconds).

VO2 Max: The fēnix 2 can estimate your VO2 Max, your body's maximum oxygen consumption, to help you track your fitness and performance levels. When the optional HRM-Run is worn, the fēnix 2 estimates your VO2 Max by analyzing your running speed, heartbeats per minute, and the variation in your heart rate. You can use the VO2 Max data to see how your VO2 Max compares to other runners of your gender and age range. The device can also use the data to predict your race time for several distances.

Recovery Time: Using the optional HRM-Run's heart rate data, the fēnix 2 can calculate how much recovery time you need between workouts or races. After your run, the recovery time shows how long before you should attempt another hard workout.

User Profile: The Garmin fēnix 2 uses information that you enter about yourself to calculate accurate training data. You can modify the following user profile information: Gender, Birth Year, Height, and Weight.

Virtual Partner: The Virtual Partner feature is a training tool designed to help you reach your goals. You can set the Virtual Partner to run at a target pace or speed. As you run, you can "compete" with the Virtual Partner, checking the display to see if you are ahead or behind the target pace or speed. If the pace is too slow or too fast, you can adjust the speed of the Virtual Partner as you run.

Auto Lap: Auto Lap automatically marks a lap at a specific distance. This feature is helpful for comparing your performance over different parts of an activity. Each time you complete a lap, the device will beep or vibrate, and the lap time is displayed.

Auto Pause: You can set the fēnix 2 to pause the timer automatically when you stop moving, or when your pace drops below a specified value. This feature is helpful if you have to stop for traffic or to tie your shoe during your run.

Swimming: You can use the device while surface swimming in a pool or open water. While pool swimming, you can enter the pool size data and keep track of the strokes, and the number of lengths (of the pool) you swam.

Skiing/Snowboarding: In Ski-Board mode, the fēnix 2 keeps track of your speed, distance, and vertical drop to calculate the number of runs you make. Auto Pause stops the timer while you're on the lift.

Watch Functions: When you're not working out, the fēnix 2 can be used as a basic watch, displaying the time and date, along with an alarm. The time is automatically set by the GPS receiver (or manually, if desired), and can be displayed in 12-hour or 24-hour format.

VIRB Remote: If you have a Garmin VIRB or VIRB Elite action camera, the fēnix 2 can be used as a glove-friendly remote control. The camera commands for stopping and starting recordings and taking still photos are sent wirelessly via ANT+.

Optional Carrying Case: When not in use, or when traveling, the fēnix 2 can be stored in an optional carrying case (sold separately). The case will hold the watch and the data/charging cradle.
