Product Research

Features

Overview: The Garmin Forerunner 15 is a lightweight, stylish running watch with a high-sensitivity GPS receiver which accurately records the distance, time, speed, and location of your runs. You can also use it to simply count your steps during an activity or throughout the day. The device keeps track of your personal records, and lets you know when you have set new ones. The Forerunner 15 provides constant feedback, including the distance traveled, elapsed time, pace, lap time, and speed. After your run, you can upload your results to the Garmin Connect online community.

Water Resistant: The Forerunner 15 has a 5 ATM water rating, which means it can withstand pressures equivalent to a depth of 50 meters (164 feet). Not only can you run in the rain and wet weather, you can even swim while wearing the device. The device also has a wide operating temperature range of 5° to 140°F.

LCD Screen: The Forerunner 15 features a 0.81" x 0.77" LCD screen with a resolution of 55 x 32 pixels. The display has a 8 second backlight timer.

High-Sensitivity GPS Receiver: The unit features a high-sensitivity GPS receiver which will stay locked onto satellites, even near tall buildings or under tree cover.

Rechargeable Battery: The Forerunner 15 has a built-in Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery, which will give you up to 8 hours battery life in training mode. When not training, you can use the device as a digital watch for up to 5 weeks on a single charge. A 42" data/charging cradle is provided for charging the battery and uploading your training data.

Add-on Sensors: The Forerunner 15 can be used with wireless 2.4 GHz ANT+ add-on sensors, such as the optional Premium Heart Rate Monitor. The monitor straps around your chest, and transmits your heart rate to the device for instant feedback on how hard you're working. The optional Foot Pod, available from Garmin, can work with the Forerunner 15 to monitor your distance and cadence when you're running indoors or when GPS cannot be used.

User Profile: The Garmin Forerunner 15 uses information that you enter about yourself to calculate accurate training data. You can modify the following user profile information: Maximum Heart Rate, Gender, Birth Year, Height, and Weight.

Move Alert: Sitting for prolonged periods of time can be harmful to your health. You can set the Forerunner 15 to simply remind you to move. The Move Alert is a timer that is triggered after one hour of inactivity. When the alert is triggered, the move alert is reset only after a couple of minutes of continuous activity, such as a short walk.

Virtual Pacer: The Virtual Pacer feature is a training tool designed to help you reach your goals. You can set the Virtual Pacer to run at a target pace or speed. As you run, you can compare your time to the pace you have set.

Auto Lap: Auto Lap automatically marks a lap after every mile. This feature is helpful for comparing your performance over different parts of an activity. Each time you complete a lap, the device will beep or vibrate, and the lap time is displayed.

Auto Pause: You can set the Forerunner 15 to pause the timer automatically when you stop moving, or when your pace drops below a specified value. This feature is helpful if you have to stop for traffic or to tie your shoe during your run.

Interval Workouts: You can create interval workouts with alternating periods of running and walking based on time. Prior to your workout, you can enter values for your running period and your walking period between 30 seconds and 10 minutes in 30 second increments.

Run History: The Forerunner 15 can save your last 7 running sessions in the device's memory. Your run history displays the date, distance, run time, and calories burned. If you're counting your daily steps, you can save your step count, goal, distance traveled, and calories burned. The history can also include average heart rate data, if you are using the optional heart rate monitor. When the memory is full, your oldest data is overwritten. History is not recorded while the timer is stopped or paused.

Garmin Connect: After you complete and save an activity to the Forerunner 15, you can connect the device to your computer and upload the data to Garmin Connect, the online community created for users of Garmin sports devices. You can view detailed information about your activity, including time, distance, heart rate (if using HRM), calories burned, cadence, an overhead map, pace and speed charts, and customizable reports. This data can be used to track your progress and to share with friends on your favorite social media sites.

Watch Functions: When you're not working out, the Forerunner 15 can be used as a basic watch, displaying the time and date, along with an alarm. The time is automatically set by the GPS receiver (or manually, if desired), and can be displayed in 12-hour or 24-hour format.

Optional Carrying Case: When not in use, or when traveling, the Forerunner 15 can be stored in an optional carrying case (sold separately). The case will hold both the watch and the data/charging cradle.

Customer Q&A

2 questions already asked

Q
Does the watch use your heart rate to calculate the calories you have burned? I'm worried that it simply records the heart rate rather than using it in the calculation.

A
As I understand the FR15 does use the HRM to calculate calories burned, if you have one connected. Otherwise, it uses a less accurate estimate using steps taken, when the GPS is not being used or distance/speed traveled, with GPS on. Both calculations take into account the weight and height you entered when you first configured your watch.

Q
Does this one read heart rate or does it just have the capability to do so with another item?
megan  Feb 17, 2015

A
It can record heart rate - BUT only with purchase of separate heart rate monitor.
