Our take on the Garmin GTU™ 10

by Dominic Devito
Garmin

Looking for additional peace of mind against theft or abduction? Garmin's GTU 10 locator makes it easy to keep track of your family members, pets, vehicles and more, so you can be sure everything's okay. This handy device can go with you on vacation or stay near home to let you monitor what's important to you for maximum assurance.

Small, sturdy, and ready to go
The compact, lightweight, and waterproof GTU 10 measures a little over 3" long and less than 1" tall. And it comes with a handy carrying case with a carabiner clip that makes it easy to attach to Fido's collar or your computer bag. It offers coverage throughout much of the United States and features a rechargeable battery that lasts up to 4 weeks between chargings, depending on use.

Monitor your valuables anywhere
You can monitor the locator's position and movements using your computer, your Garmin nüLink!™ 1695 portable navigator, or your compatible smartphone (via text message or using the free Garmin Tracker™ app), foiling the best-laid plans of wandering dogs or potential car thieves. You can also set up to ten "geofences" — user-defined areas, like your backyard, your business premises, or your child's school grounds — and the GTU 10 will alert you whenever it enters or leaves them. You can also program the GTU 10 to let you know when the battery is running low or has been powered off completely.

Garmin includes a one-year service plan with your GTU 10 purchase; after that, a yearly $49.99 subscription fee will apply to continue access to the GTU 10 services. There are no contracts to sign or activation fees, but some non-standard services may require additional monthly fees. Coverage may vary, depending on cell-phone service and GPS reception.

Features

Overview: The Garmin Tracking Unit (GTU 10) combines a web-based tracking service and GPS technology so that you can keep watch on your loved ones, pets, vehicle, luggage, or other valuables. The GTU 10 allows you to receive location alerts via email or text message so you'll know where your belongings are at all times. With the GTU 10, you'll even be able to pinpoint locations on a map when used with a computer or compatible smart phone. The GTU 10 is durable, lightweight, easy to set up, has a rechargeable battery, and includes a one-year service plan with purchase (charges apply thereafter).

Rugged Design: The Garmin GTU 10 is compact (1.325"W x 0.795"H x 3.095"D), lightweight (1.71 oz), and waterproof (IPX7).

Coverage Area: The Garmin GTU 10 is equipped with a high-sensitivity GPS receiver and provides coverage area for the entire United States, via GSM (Global Systems for Mobile) wireless connection.

Note: There is no ability to add maps.

Track Almost Anything: The features of the GTU 10 are flexible, allowing you to use it to fit your lifestyle.

  • Travelers: Locate luggage and belongings so nothing gets left behind or lost.
  • Parents: Track your children on their way to school to make sure they arrive safely.
  • Pet Owners: Receive notifications when your pet exists a geofence so you can track it down.
  • Runners: Let friends or family track your whereabouts on your daily run, or your progress on race day.

Tracking Plans: The Garmin GTU 10 offers two tracking plans to meet your needs.

  • Standard Tracking: With Standard Tracking you'll be able to locate the GTU 10 whenever you need to, using your computer or mobile device. You'll be able to see the location of your device on an easy-to-read map. You'll also be able to access the last 10 points of daily track history. With Standard Tracking, your track history is recorded anytime you request location, a geofence boundary is crossed (if geofences are being applied) or low battery/powered off is detected.  Standard Tracking is an annual service plan ($49.99), with the option to automatically renew when it expires to ensure uninterrupted service.
  • Deluxe Tracking: When you add the Deluxe Tracking service plan to your Standard Tracking service plan, you'll be able to locate the GTU 10 and get a more detailed picture of where the device has been. With Deluxe Tracking, you can access 7 days of track history. You can also control the level of track history detail by specifying the intervals you would like to record track points. Deluxe Tracking works in conjunction with Standard Tracking, so you'll get the same great features as always. You can still locate the GTU 10 whenever you need to, using your computer or mobile device. And in addition to the track points being recorded at your specified intervals, your track history would also be recorded anytime you request location, a geofence boundary is crossed (if geofences are being applied), or low battery/powered off is detected. Deluxe Tracking is a monthly service plan ($4.99) that you add to the annual Standard Tracking service plan, with the option to automatically renew when it expires to ensure uninterrupted service.

Great unit!

Written By Robert S, Los Angeles, CA on Sunday, March 10, 2013

Have used multiple units for vehicle tracking. Hard wired under the dash, they are fantastic. Through the computer you can get all the location data and alerts you want. Can be used with multiple geofences, flags excess speed as user selected values, et cetera. On line interphase is good. Unless you dont mind paying a high monthly fee, this is the best unit on the market.
Pros:
1/3 the annual cost of competetive devices (<$50 per year subscription) Very companct size Internal battery plus external power cord available Accurate location identification any time you want overlayed on a google air photo Garmin reliability and warranty
Cons:
Battery life limited if in higher use modes, and not used in a hard wire application.

Extremely Disappointing!

Written By DR, Connecticut on Friday, April 01, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought GTU10 to track a babysitter driving our young kids in the car, but it's not nearly up to the task.

1. Battery. I set GTU10 to report location every 5 minutes and sleep when inside a geofence; Garmin says the battery charge should last 3-10 days. Mine: 1 day!
2. Tracking service. The "deluxe" service lets you check online where the unit has been during a period of time. The site marks a local map with dots at the points where GTU10 reported its location. But the dots aren't connected in any way and can't be searched. When the car leaves my town/geofence, I have no way to know which direction it went. Since it reports only every 5 minutes, I must scour the map in a 5-mile mile radius on all sides of town (assuming car was going 60 mph) just to find the next dot. Then another radius to find the dot after that, etc. If you opt for longer reporting intervals to save the battery, the dots get even further apart! If the system allowed us to jump from dot to dot, connected the dots, etc., they'd be easier to find. But as it is, it's nearly impossible to trace a faster-moving vehicle.
3. Unit feedback. GTU10 has a small LED that's usually off but can blink either red or green. Push the button, and it flashes a pattern of red/green lights to show its status. But the patterns are hard to remember, and sometimes pushing gets no response. You're left wondering whether it's on, receiving signal, etc.
