Ideal for gearheads

Do you love to tinker with your car in the name of better performance? Are you looking for a convenient way to track how your vehicle responds while you're driving? Garmin's got a great solution in the Mechanic with ecoRoute HD — simply pair this vehicle diagnostic monitor with your Android smartphone or nüvi portable navigator for instant access to important specs that can help you get more from every trip.

Easy to install and use

The Mechanic with ecoRoute HD plugs directly into your car's OBD-II port, usually found below the driver's side dashboard, to access a large amount of real-time info about your vehicle's performance — the same data that professional mechanics use to diagnose problems with your vehicle. The device then relays the information via wireless Bluetooth® connection to your nüvi, which then displays your vehicle's performance on easy-to-follow gauges and charts. The Bluetooth connection with the Mechanic with ecoRoute HD does not affect your nüvi's ability to make or receive calls with your compatible cell phone.

If you have an Android smartphone, you can download the free Garmin Mechanic app (available on Google Play), and enjoy access to the same information on your smartphone via its Bluetooth connection.

Gauges galore

Depending on your vehicle and whether you're running through a nüvi or smartphone, you'll view real-time gauges for RPM, air/fuel mixture, oil pressure, oil temperature, coolant temperature, air flow, fuel flow, air pressure, and more. You can even customize the gauges to fit your preferences.

Reduce costly visits to the mechanic

If you've been frustrated by your car's "check engine" light in the past, you'll be glad to know that the Garmin Mechanic gives you clear explanations for what's wrong with your vehicle whenever the light comes on. You can even reset the check engine light through the system, saving you the time and money to have a professional do it.

In addition, the Mechanic with ecoRoute HD monitors intake air temperature, throttle position, emissions, battery charging status, and other vital engine performance parameters. You can keep tabs on your engine engine's performance, so you can make adjustments for peak efficiency or take it in for maintenance when needed.

More accurate data so you can drive smarter

The ecoRoute HD feature also tracks your fuel usage and gas mileage, so you can check out your estimated fuel economy, carbon footprint, and fuel cost for each trip. By measuring your engine's performance and fuel consumption over time, you'll find the areas where you're driving less efficiently along your commute. You can use this data to choose more Earth-friendly routes around town — not only will you help the environment, but you'll save some money as well. You can also use the Mechanic with ecoRoute HD as a trip computer on long treks — it'll give you real-time updates on your journey's progress, including average speed and fuel use.

Note: Your Garmin nüvi navigator must have Bluetooth compatibility to work with the ecoRoute HD.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought one for our new car. Paired it with a Gartmin Nuvi 2599. Good product. Easy to install. Easy to use.

Pros: Good product. Easy to install. East to connect via Bluetooth. Easy to use.

Cons: Does not appear to display all/most trouble codes and does not display Eco-route driving challenge score live on Nuvi map screen like my other device pair. That may be a Nuvi model function, not a Garmin Mechanic function, or lack thereof.

A Wonderful tool

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great addition to my nuviCam since it connects directly to the car - and gives me a better picture of what it going on..

Pros: Keeps a better eye on my engine performance that I would be able to do. Provides a app for my phone, so I can access information separately.

Cons: The wire between the plug and the unit could be a bit longer - not all OBD-II ports are readily accessible.. My port is located in an odd place, and I had to do some fancy innovation to get the unit safely stowed out of the way.

Best piece of electronics I bought this year

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Hooks up in seconds gives more info than all of the car Gage's combined. Helps to change driving habits increasing gas Milage. Converts miles per gallon to dollars spent on gas per trip. Helps me convince my wife that driving an extra 10 miles to use a $2.00 coupon results in a negative savings.

Pros: Well made provides useful information

Cons: None

Perfect addition to my RV 760 Garmen GPS

Written by: Dale B. from California on August 30, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Garmen Mechanic Eco-route HD is the perfect addition to my Garmen RV 760, Had a little issue pairing it to the 760 until I hit the reset button on the Eco route unit then connected right up, it has the ability to learn and recalibrate MPG as you use it and enter real time data. My Motorhome is an older model and does not have bells and whistles that this unit provides.

Pros: Easy connect with wireless bluetooth function.

Cons: A little light on user instructions manual.

Fun but could improve

Nice product with the Android app. Biggest problem is you can not use it when your phone is connected to your car for music and/or phone calls. It will constantly lose connection with the device.

Pros: Great information about your car.

Cons: Can't connect with a phone that is also connected with your car.

Just What I Was Looking For

Written by: Don C from Greenhead, Florida on July 7, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Garmin Mechanic with ecoRouteT HD was exactly was I looking for. I am using the Garmin Mechanic with ecoRouteT HD with the Garmin RV 760LMT. What a combination. Really does make a difference in how I drive the Sprinter 3500 based Fleetwood RV. It is comforting to know that I can read a code without paying more than the cost of the Garmin Mechanic with ecoRouteT HD to a repair facility. Very easy and quick to pair via Bluetooth. Highly recommend! Ordered from Crutchfield after talking with their tech people. It was enroute the same day I ordered. Great service!

Pros: Fairly priced, easy to install, lots of information!

Cons: None

Thank you for this great product, I really enjoyed it works very well.

Some what satisfied

Written by: Anonymous from Charlottesville, VA on September 8, 2014

I bought this product so I could use it to see if my car has any issue. The product was easy to install, but it was not easy to find a spot for it to be taped or velcro, zip tied to.

Pros: The product showed what I need to know and was able to show me gauges info from my vehicle.

Cons: - Pairing the device was not easy and I was not able to use with the Garmin garage with it, since I have feeling it only allow one paired device at a time. - There was not enough gauges to display - One time device pairing

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is one great product for those who want to keep a check on ALL engine performance items. I mean all , from eng temp , rpms , air intake temp, timing advance, and a bunch more. Highly recommended, and the service from Crutchfield was awesome. Fast shipping, and a heck of a lot lower price than straight from Garmin.

Pros: see review

Cons: None

Fussy but useful

Written by: Dan from Sun Prairie, WI on April 29, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The real-time info is very useful. However, the start-up procedure is very time-consuming, finicky and annoying. It will not properly connect unless I turn-on the Garmin first, then initiate the app, then wait at least 30 seconds before starting my car; then, most of the the time it will do it's job after yet another 30-seconds or so of waiting. I also find it cumbersome switching between the ecoROUTE app and the map as it requires stepping through several menu-picks or hitting the back button several times to switch between the two modes. The instructions for use seemed a bit limited as well. I still don't quite understand the bar graph display. Clicking on it toggles between 10-minute, 1-hour, and multi-hour (accumulated) performance display. But, the mpg range on the graph seems to change in value from time to time. The graph also seems to be in error much of the time. -that is, the lines don't accurately record history. This is most noticeable on the 10-minute view. Quite often it will show periods of 0-20 mpg, when in reality I was consistently over 40 mpg. I use it mainly for real-time mpg display, which has proven itself very accurate and an extremely useful tool for maximizing and developing good gas-mileage habits. The ecoROUTE app scoring is pretty useless info to me. The engine gauges are awesome, and give me feedback (like coolant temp) that I don't normally have. I works well for what I need it for, but the start-up procedure is very frustrating.

Pros: accurate real-time mpg feedback, engine gauges

Cons: cumbersome start-up and initiation of connection, inaccurate graphing, multiple steps to switch to other modes (like View Map)

Cool Upgrade

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The ecoroute HD was instantly recognized by my garmin (2595lmt) via bluetooth and have had no issues since installation. The guages are a very cool, neat feature for the gearhead/car lover. I have tried to improve my MPG fuel economy based on the instant information presented to me via the HD receiver (i.e. I notice my chronic "lead foot/ hard breaking more than ever) and think I saving a little money...too soon to create a real pattern. I have not viewd any codes yet but it provides some peace-of-mind knowing I have the option to view/reset should any trouble codes arrive on my '06 subaru baja. Overall, I am happy I purchased it and continue to discover cool new features of the device....GOOD bargin @ crutchfield too!

Pros: Easy installation, cool instant vehicle information.

Cons: None

Great product!

First, this product is "connected" via the wireless Bluetooth availability on the top-of-the line Garmin GPS systems or the Kenwood Navigation systems (their GPS is made by Garmin). Simple plug your ecoRouteT HD unit into your vehicle's standardized onboard diagnostics port (OBD II). Turn on your car, follow the directions provided to link up with your Garmin unit. Make sure your plug is securely pushed in all the way into the port and look for the blinking green lights -- indicating the unit is ready to connect to your Garmin GPS usit/Kenwood head unit. Be patient, it takes about 2 to 3 minutes to recognize the ecoRoute HD. Once it is connected, the blilnking green lights turns to a solid blue LED light and you have wonderfully useful information -- that's really cool! Remember to "touch" each gauge on the screen to modify the information. Have fun and enjoy driving more economically!

Pros: Very easy to connect -- plug in, stick on anywhere under the dash. If needed, long plastic ties are included.

Cons: The supplied double-sided adhesive tape to attach the ecoRoute HD to the surface of the front of your dash (near your knees) is a weak adhesive. If it does not adhere to your plastic dash, replace the original tape with 3M VHB "Supermount Tape" found at hardware stores and Radio Shack. It's made for "Hi-temp/Hi-strength."

Crutchfield response on September 5, 2012 We contacted Garmin about Kenwood compatibility with this accessory. Garmin stated that this unit is not compatible with any Kenwood head units.

Reset Check Engine Light

Written by: Tom from Florida on April 21, 2012

It is great to know that the ecoRoute HD diagnostic tool can reset your check engine light. But, it's another thing to know how!

I'm using my ecoRoute HD with my Garmin Nuvi 3790LMT GPS. The check-engine light has been illuminated on my 2006 Chrysler Pacifica for about 2-weeks now, but engine performance has been normal. I got the ecoRoute to pair with my GPS with relative ease. The OBD-II code displayed by the device was P0456 (Evap System Small Leak). I learned that the device might not reset the error code with the engine running. So, with the error code displayed on my GPS, I shut the engine down and turned the ignition key to the "On" position. I got the error code to reset by only using the GPS. I touched the screen where the error code was displayed, and another screen appeared with menu options that included "Reset" and "Cancel." I selected "Reset" and the light blinked and went out. The instructions in the Owner's manual entitled "Turning on ecoRoute Without Starting Your Car" appear to explain how to reset the code, but are completely misleading. Step-2 says "Press and release Reset." There is a reset button on the ecoRoute device, but it is only used to reset the vehicle profile you entered for your particular vehicle, or to reset the device to factory defaults. The reset option displayed on my GPS screen did the job! Hope this helps.

Pros: Does what it says it will do. Provides good information about your vehicle, and resets the check-engine light.

Cons: Owner's manual is very weak and could be more helpful!
