About the Garmin nüviCam™ LMTHD

Dominic DeVito

Guidance, alerts, and a digital record of your travels

Defensive driving: even if you're extra-cautious when behind the wheel, there's no accounting for everyone else on the road. That's why a dash camera is a useful tool in today's litigious society. Garmin's nüviCam LMTHD portable navigator not only helps reduce stress by providing turn-by-turn guidance, its built-in digital video recorder takes an unbiased visual account of events, allowing you to present the facts of an incident should the need arise.

And while the dash camera is incredibly useful, the nüviCam LMTHD's navigation features alone make it a tremendous investment. It boasts a 6" multi-touch glass display with intuitive pinch-to-zoom capability, plus voice-activated guidance, rapid traffic alerts, free map updates, and Bluetooth® connectivity, along with a wealth of additional extras that'll get you where you need to go in a jiffy.

Built-in dash cam

The nüviCam LMTHD's fully automated camera will start recording once the engine is turned on and stop when the engine is turned off. Beyond that, you don't need to think about it again if you don't want to. Simply enjoy the peace of mind — the navigator is loop-recording a high resolution, wide-angle view of the road (along with the date, time, and exact GPS location) to set the record straight if something unexpected happens. The swivel lens lets you adjust the camera for the best view.

If you're involved in an accident, this device's built-in G-Sensor will detect hard braking or a collision, then save the last, current and next recordings, preserving a complete record of the event. You can play the footage back on the nüviCam's 6" display, or save the video file to the included microSD™ card for viewing on another device. An integrated microphone allows audio recording capability, and if you need to take the nüviCam out and get some snapshots of damage, it has photo capability as well.

Advanced Driver Assistance System features keep you aware

The nüviCam LMTHD doesn't just help you in case of an accident, it can also help you avoid one as well. It features three key features from Garmin to help you drive more safely:

  • Forward Collision Warning provides you with audible and on-screen alerts if you're traveling too close to the vehicle ahead of you at more than 30 miles per hour.
  • Lane Departure Warning alerts you both audibly and visually if you've crossed a lane divider at more than 40 miles per hour.
  • Garmin Real Vision™ switches the display on the navigator's screen from maps to the camera view as you approach select destinations, and a bright arrow will point you where you need to go.

Garmin Real Vision

Seeing is believing

The nüviCam LMTHD's bright 6" display makes it easy to follow along to its preloaded maps of the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and several Caribbean islands, along with millions of points of interest; you can even add your own favorite destinations. You can find and select businesses right on the map screen without having to go through time-wasting menus. Speed limit displays with visual warnings on major roads help keep you in check, and you'll even be notified of school zones.

The screen's pinch-to-zoom interface lets you scale and move the map easily for the best view. And with one tap of the screen, you can pull up details for services that lie ahead on your route, including restaurants, gas stations, and more. You also get up to four free map updates per year to keep you current on road changes.

It simply stays put

Do you take your navigator out of your car often? The nüviCam LMTHD's mount reduces frustration and saves time. The powered base has an integrated magnetic mount that connects instantly to the metallic rear of the navigator so it'll stay securely in place as long as you need it to. When you're ready to move the navigator out of the car, just give it a gentle pull to detach it from the mount and you're on your way.

Find it via Foursquare®

Foursquare's crowd-sourced database of points of interest breathes new life into tired directories of where to stop for gas, food, lodging, or shopping. When you look for points of interest on the nüviCam LMTHD, you'll see the most relevant Foursquare results at the top of the search bar, so you'll know the destination is verified by actual users. If you've got your nüvi paired with Garmin's Smartphone Link (see below), you'll also see helpful info such as ratings, hours, and price range displayed on the nüvi's screen. And if you're a Foursquare user yourself, you can check in nearly anywhere through the navigator when it's paired with your phone.

Turn-by-turn directions to exactly where you need to go

Most portable navigators leave you on your own once they've gotten you to the general vicinity of your destination, which can be a real hassle when you're trying to find a specific store in a mall or the correct gate at an airport. Garmin's Direct Access feature helps you find your way to specific points at select malls, airports, and universities, taking you directly to that particular location without searching helplessly once you've gotten to the area. It'll even help you get through parking lots to get you as close to where you need to be as possible, giving business travelers an edge when it's time to rent a car.

Garmin nuviCam LMTHD portable navigator

Garmin's HD Digital Traffic for rapid reports

The nüviCam LMTHD offers free lifetime traffic updates through Garmin's HD Digital Traffic service — you'll receive new information up to every 30 seconds, which is about as timely as it gets. It offers up to three times more side road coverage than most services, and incorporates data from HD Radio™ sources, active devices on the road, historical traffic patterns, and other factors like construction, concerts, and sporting events to give you a thorough look at congestion in most metropolitan areas.

You'll see traffic updates on the side of your navigator's screen, so you can also keep watch for your next maneuver. And you'll hear spoken warnings about conditions ahead as they develop. Garmin HD Digital Traffic is also voice activated, so it can respond to the sound of your speech. Best of all, you won't have to pay any extra for this service as long as you own your nüviCam.

Take control without your hands

Voice-activated navigation is quite simple: with one spoken command, you can "wake up" the navigator to respond to your voice. You can then search through menus on the 6" screen, then input addresses and destinations without touching the screen. The Garmin will respond to your words intelligently. Built-in Bluetooth lets you sync your compatible phone to the navigator for hands-free conversations you carry on through the nüviCam's integrated microphone and speaker.

Tap into Garmin Smartphone Link

Smartphone users can download Garmin's free Smartphone Link app to their device and connect to the nüviCam LMTHD. When paired, the navigator can use your phone's existing data plan to share information such as saved and recently found locations, where you parked, and your current destination. You can then use your phone to give you step-by-step directions back to your car in a large parking lot, for example, or import destinations to your navigator from your phone.

You can also launch Garmin Live Services from the app, which give you local weather reports, live traffic updates, real-time photos from traffic cameras, area gas prices, and locations and rates for nearby parking lots and garages. Some Garmin Live Services require a subscription. Data charges may apply for using Smartphone Link — you'll want to check with your service provider.

Hear directions like you'd say them

The nüviCam LMTHD offers Garmin Real Directions with Garmin Real Voice, a combination that helps keep you relaxed as you drive. Real Directions voice prompts speak the instructions to you like a friend would, using easy-to-see landmarks, buildings and businesses, and traffic lights, rather than streets with tiny signs that you might not see in time. With Real Voice technology, you'll hear directions spoken in a personable, human-sounding voice that you'll comprehend readily.

Quick info at a glance

You'll see 3D representations of select buildings, landmarks and terrain aspects on the nüviCam LMTHD's screen, making it easier to figure out where you are. Garmin also incorporates several other helpful visual tools to keep you on the correct path:

  • Active Lane Guidance shows you colored arrows for the correct lane for an upcoming turn.
  • Bird's Eye junction view gives you a detailed look at complicated interchanges from above, to give you a better perspective.
  • photoReal junction view displays realistic images of intersections, including signs and surrounding terrain, along with colored arrows for the correct lane.

You'll see all three visual features in a split-screen with your overall route so you won't lose sight of what's further down the road. This Garmin's also compatible with the optional Garmin BC 30 wireless rear-view camera, so you can add an extra layer of safety when you're backing out of your driveway.

Warning: The use of this device may be restricted in some states or jurisdictions.

General Features
Navigation Features

General Features

Overview: The Garmin nüviCam LMTHD is a premium portable GPS navigation device with an integrated dash camera that continuously records video of your drive, and saves the video file upon impact. As a portable navigation device, it provides automatic routing and turn-by-turn voice directions. It also has voice-activated navigation, allowing you to keep your hands on the wheel while inputting your destination. The unit includes subscription-free, lifetime traffic updates and free lifetime map updates. With built-in Bluetooth, you can make and receive hands-free phone calls through a Bluetooth-enabled phone, plus receive live services through a free Smartphone Link app.

6.1" Touchscreen LCD: The nüviCam features a 6.1" color TFT capacitive touchscreen LCD with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. It has multi-touch capability, which allows you to "pinch to zoom" in and out. The display is set to landscape orientation only.

Preloaded Maps: The nüviCam contains NAVTEQ's City Navigator North America NT 2015 maps with detailed road maps of the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Mexico, Cayman Islands, and Bahamas.

Foursquare: The unit's POI database contains location information on millions of points-of-interest, including businesses, stores, restaurants, hotels, and other destinations. The database now includes information from Foursquare, a local search and discovery service, that provides personalized recommendations based on your current location. You must be connected to your smartphone via the Smartphone Link app to receive data from Foursquare.

Free Lifetime Map Updates: The nüviCam offers free lifetime map updates so you'll always have the most up-to-date maps, POIs, and navigation information. Map updates are available for download up to 4 times a year with no subscription or update fees and no expiration dates. Free Lifetime Map Updates are subject to Terms & Conditions.

Dash Cam: The integrated high definition dash cam is located on the back of the unit, facing forward through the windshield. It automatically records video as you drive. If a collision occurs, the Incident Detection G-sensor automatically saves the video file upon impact, and the GPS records exactly where and when the events occurred. You can manually tilt the device and swivel the lens to align the camera. Video and photos are recorded onto a dedicated microSD card. A 4 GB microSD card is supplied, but the unit will accept cards up to 64 GB with a speed rating of Class 4 or higher.

Dash Camera Recording: The unit automatically begins recording video when it is powered on, and records until the unit is turned off or video recording is disabled. It continually overwrites the oldest, non-saved video as it records. You can also take still photos with the device. The time and location information is stored with the photo when it is taken. Saved videos and photos can be viewed on the screen by accessing the Gallery. You can also view photos and videos on your computer using the downloadable Dash Cam Player, available for Windows (Windows 7 or later) and Macintosh (OS X 10.9 or newer).

Driver Awareness Features: The nüviCam offers premium driver awareness features like those found in luxury vehicles. Forward Collision Warnings alert you if you are driving too close to the vehicle ahead. Lane Departure Warnings let you know when you drift off the road, or into oncoming traffic. The Forward Collision Warning System activates when your vehicle is traveling 30 mph or higher, while the Lane Departure Warning system requires driving at 40 mph or more.

Note: These features can only function when the camera is facing forward and centered roughly on the middle of the driving lane and the horizon line, and are subject to certain limitations.

Garmin Real Vision: Garmin Real Vision is another exclusive feature of the nüviCam. As you approach select destinations, the display will switch to the camera view, and a bright arrow will point to your destination. This feature will help you find locations with hard-to-read street numbers or hidden driveways.

Optional Backup Camera: You can connect the optional Garmin BC30 wireless backup camera to the nüviCam to use as an aid to parking or backing up your vehicle. Once connected, you can easily see vehicles, pedestrians, or other objects right on the nüvi display. The camera's transmitter and receiver operate on the 2.4 GHz ISM radio band, so there's no need to run wiring between the camera and receiver. Up to 4 cameras can be connected to BC30 wireless camera system.

Garmin Express: You can connect the unit to your computer with the supplied USB cable for downloading map updates, custom POIs, voices, and vehicles. You will need to download the Garmin Express software to update your maps and register the unit. Garmin Express requires Windows Vista SP2 or newer or Mac OS X 10.8 or higher.

Bluetooth: The nüviCam has built-in Bluetooth technology. This allows you to sync the unit with a Bluetooth-enabled device for hands-free calling through its integrated microphone and speaker. You can make and receive phone calls as long as the devices are within 33 feet and paired.

microSD Card Slot: In addition to the memory card slot for the dash camera, nüviCam has a second microSD card slot to let you store and use optional cityXplorer or marine maps (available from Garmin), or download and store custom voices and vehicles from the Garmin Garage.

Power Requirements: The Garmin nüviCam is powered by your vehicle's battery using the included 12-volt cigarette lighter power adapter. The built-in Lithium-Ion battery will provide up to 30 minutes of use after a 4-hour charge. The unit can be powered or charged by your computer when it is connected via the supplied USB cable.

Navigation Features

Garmin Real Directions: The nüviCam features Garmin Real Directions with easy-to-understand driving directions using recognizable landmarks, buildings, and traffic lights, in addition to street names.

Note: The voice prompts are available in several languages in the menu. In order to hear the street names spoken, you must select a voice that speaks "Garmin Real Directions."

Voice Command: You can use your voice to activate and operate the nüviCam. Voice Command allows you to use the device by speaking words and commands and following the voice prompts. After speaking a predetermined Wakeup Phrase, you can enter the names and/or address of popular, well-known locations. If necessary, you can disable voice prompts without muting the device, so you'll still hear the audible directions as you travel.

Smartphone Link: Smartphone Link is a phone application that allows the device to download live data using your phone's data connection, and transferring the data wirelessly via Bluetooth. The free Garmin Smartphone Link app provides access to Garmin Live Services, which includes free and subscription-based plans for viewing traffic data, weather, dynamic parking, and fuel prices. Garmin Smartphone Link is available for iPhone 4S and later (running iOS 6.0 or later) in the App Store and for some Android devices (running Android 2.1 or higher) in the Google Play store.

Garmin HD Digital Traffic: HD Digital Traffic is Garmin's best traffic solution, receiving updates up to every 30 seconds, ten times faster than other traffic systems. The supplied GTM60 HD Digital Traffic receiver uses the HD Radio system to receive updates. The traffic updates appear to the side of the map, so your driving map remains onscreen at all times. The updates can give you details about the situation, including the estimated length of the delay, and possible detours around the trouble. Free Lifetime Garmin Traffic requires no subscription or activation, and is subject to Terms & Conditions.

Note: HD Digital Traffic updates are available in approximately 125 markets throughout the U.S.

Points of Interest: The built-in maps include millions of Points of Interest (POIs) such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, attractions, and ATMs to help you find the destination you desire. In addition, you can download additional points of interest and add them to the unit's memory (Custom POIs). The free POI Loader software can be downloaded from the Garmin website to assist you in creating Custom POIs.

Active Lane Guidance: Active Lane Guidance with voice prompts lets you know in advance which lane you should to be in to make an upcoming turn. In select metropolitan areas, the nüviCam will enter split screen mode to display the photoReal Junction View, a realistic depiction of the junction, complete with road signs and brightly-colored arrows to indicate the proper lane for navigation.

Map View Options: You can choose from a 3D map view or two 2D map views (Track Up or North Up) as you navigate to your destination.

Speed Limits: As you travel along a major road or street, the speed limit is displayed on the screen alongside of the vehicle's speed display. If you are exceeding the speed limit, the color of the vehicle speed indication changes to red. If the highway's posted speed limit has changed since the last map update, you can change the speed limit display on the unit.

Where Am I?: The "Where Am I?" feature gives you instant access to important information in case of an emergency. When you touch the vehicle icon on the map screen, the "Where Am I?" feature provides the coordinates (including elevation) of your current position, plus the nearest address and intersections. There are also buttons to help you locate the nearest hospitals, police stations, gas stations, and roadside assistance. You can also save the location for future reference.

Map Tools: The nüviCam offers a customizable menu of Map Tools that are available with a single touch:

  • Stop: Lets you stop navigation at any time. (Blanked out when not navigating an active route.)
  • Change Route: Helps you find a different route to your destination. (Blanked out when not navigating an active route.)
  • Up Ahead: As you travel, the Up Ahead feature constantly indicates the location of nearby businesses, including gas, food, lodging, restrooms, parking, and banks and ATMs. The locations are shown as icons, some with brand logos, and when the icons are touched on the screen, details of the services are displayed, and you are given the opportunity to navigate to that address.
  • Trip Data: Indicates along the right edge the Trip A odometer reading, along with the average moving speed and total moving time.
  • Volume: Lets you quickly adjust the volume of the voice prompts, or mute the sound. Volume control disappears after about 10 seconds.
  • Brightness: Lets you adjust the brightness of the display. (Disappears after about 10 seconds.)
  • Traffic: Searches for available traffic information.

Last Spot: To assist you in finding your parked vehicle, the Last Spot feature saves your location to memory when you disconnect the device from the power source while the device is on. You can search for your vehicle's location using the Last Spot button in the menu.

Destination Search: When the Where To? button is pressed, you can use the search tools to find your destination and plan your route. The search tools allow you to search for cities, addresses, intersections, or coordinates. The new Search Bar lets you directly enter a category, brand name, address, or city name. The unit's memory stores the last 50 locations you have found so you can quickly find a previous destination.

Garmin Garage: The unit offers your choice of eight standard icons to represent your vehicle. The online Garmin Garage offers dozens more vehicle icons, voices, and dashboards that you can download for free. In addition, you can purchase icon and voice bundles with Star Wars (Yoda, Darth Vader), Sesame Street (Oscar, Cookie Monster, Ernie & Bert), and The Simpsons (Homer and Marge) themes. With the Garmin Voice Studio, you can record your own voice prompts.

trafficTrends: When the trafficTrends feature is enabled, the nüviCam automatically records historic traffic data and uses that data to calculate more efficient routes. This information is sent to Garmin when you connect your device to myGarmin (your personal account site on the Garmin website) using your computer. Different routes may be calculated based on traffic trends for the day of the week or the time of day.

myTrends: In addition to the trafficTrends feature, myTrends also takes into account your personal driving habits and anticipates your route when calculating your ETA to your frequent destinations.

Trip Planner: You can create and save a trip with multiple destinations using the Trip Planner. Once you have entered your destinations, you can manually set them in the order of your preference, or allow the device to calculate the most efficient route. Trip itineraries can be saved in memory for future use.

Trip Computer: The trip information page displays your current speed and direction, and provides helpful statistics about your trip. Dual trip odometers keep up with your total mileage. The page also indicates the distance and driving time to your next maneuver, as well as the distance and driving time to your destination. Your maximum speed and moving average speed are also displayed. The information can be reset in advance of your next trip.

Where I've Been/Trip Log: The Where I've Been application allows you to view your previous routes and places you have stopped on the map. In addition, the device keeps a Trip Log, which is a record of the path you have traveled. The Travel History setting must be enabled in order for the Where I've Been and Trip Log features to function.

GPS Simulator: When indoors, you can activate the built-in GPS simulator and practice using the unit. This turns off the GPS receiver so it's not searching for satellites, saving battery power.

ecoRoute: The optional ecoRoute feature calculates the fuel economy and the fuel price of navigating to a destination, and offers tools for improving fuel efficiency. The ecoRoute application can be purchased from the Garmin Online Store.

Garmin Mechanic: This device is compatible with Garmin Mechanic with ecoRoute HD, which gives you real-time automotive diagnostic information right on the LCD screen. By connecting to your vehicle's OBD II port, you can monitor your vehicle's performance, providing detailed information on fuel efficiency, engine diagnostics, and sensor and gauge data. Garmin Mechanic with ecoRoute HD is compatible with most 1996 and newer cars and light trucks sold in the United States. See Garmin's incompatible vehicles list for more information.

Q
What's the difference of LMT sold in Costco vs LMTHD?
frank  May 12, 2016
1 answer
A
LMT stands for "Lifetime Maps and Traffic." HD stands for "High Definition." Since you did not give me the exact model # that Costco is selling I would have to guess that it lacks the High Def or HD function. My personal GPS is the Nuvicam LMTHD. And it works great. Hope this helps.
tony l  May 12, 2016
Q
Can the USB cable that is supplied (not the 12v charge cable) be used to charge and use the device while driving? I would like to use a standard usb charger instead of the power cable supplied. Thanks!
justin  May 08, 2016

A
I suppose you can, though I haven't tried to. I do know that it will charge while attached to a computer via USB, but the traffic receiver (that rectangular thing) is part of the cable supplied by Garmin. If you use another cable you'll lose traffic and weather data, which is one of the reasons I chose this unit in the first place!
arthur  May 10, 2016
A
I just tested it by plugging the cable that I use for charging my cell phone in the car and it appears to work the way you want.
elliott  May 09, 2016
A
This item comes with a USB cable for syncing data, not for charging. As far as i am aware you can only power the device using the 12 volt car charging cable (And it runs on battery)
patrick  May 09, 2016
A
I think you can use it to charge the nuvicam but you still need the satellite receiver to use it as a navigation unit and camera if you want to utilize the latitude longitude speed and so on. I haven't tried it mine is hard wired. The best answer would be calling Garmin. I hope I didn't state things you already knew.
marty  May 09, 2016
A
Absolutely

The answer is yes. I do that all the time with a standard USB lighter adapter and then attach the USB cable that was supplied with the unit??

From our limited use of this since early June, no. I just reviewed the owners manual and there is no mention of connecting two Garmin products to share memory only to your PC or smart phone. And I just reviewed the screen menus and there is no mention of sharing data from other Garmin devices only smart phone apps. Sorry.
