Our take on the Garmin Mobile® PC Software Package

Garmin Authorized Online Dealer

The Garmin Mobile PC software package turns your laptop into a full-featured portable navigator. The package includes a DVD loaded with detailed road maps of the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, plus 6 million points of interest for finding nearby gas stations, restaurants, ATMs, emergency services, and other services. The package also contains a compact GPS receiver antenna which plugs into your laptop's USB port to track your location.

The Garmin Mobile PC's user-friendly interface offers you two simple options for navigation — "Where to?" and "View maps." You can look up addresses and destinations easily, and you'll receive turn-by-turn map guidance.

"Take a left on Rosewood Drive."
Text-to-speech voice prompts announce actual street names at turns, so you can keep your eyes on the road. Garmin Mobile PC will even get you back on track if you miss a turn or take the wrong exit. You can even upload custom points of interest and get guidance to your contacts listed in Microsoft Outlook®.

Save time and money
You can use the Garmin Mobile PC to plan and save routes ahead of time, and it will even provide route optimization for trips with multiple destinations to save time and gas. The included trip computer records trip data, and you can check your trip log to see where you've been on the map. Garmin also provides free online services that allow you to check real-time weather, gas prices, flight status, and hotel information when you travel with your laptop and Garmin Mobile PC.

Features

Overview: The Garmin Mobile PC includes a small 20-channel GPS receiver/antenna with a 39" USB cable, and plugs directly into your laptop to turn it into a full-featured personal navigation device. The Mobile PC unit also includes a Quick Start DVD-ROM disc.

Included Maps: The system includes the City Navigator NT North America street maps of the United States and Canada, with over 6 million Points of Interest, including hotels, ATMs, restaurants, shopping, and more.

Compatibility: The Garmin Mobile PC is compatible with PCs with the following minimum requirements:

  • Operating System: Windows 2000 SP2, Windows XP, Windows Vista
  • RAM: 256 MB
  • Display: 800 x 480 or larger
  • Free Disk Space: 1.5 GB
  • Software: Microsoft Outlook 2002 or newer for contact integration
  • Other: DVD drive, USB port, Internet connection required for Garmin Online features

Note: If you are using an ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) or tablet PC, you should consult your device documentation regarding how to install software.

Navigation Features: The Mobile PC has many of the same features as the portable Garmin GPS units:

  • Where To?: When you are ready to begin navigating, you can click on the Where To? icon to enter addresses, points of interest (POIs) such as restaurants and hotels, saved locations, and a variety of other locations.
  • View Map: If you'd like to view a map of your current location, you can click on the View Map icon. As you drive along, the map moves to constantly update your position.
  • Information Page Options: After a destination is selected, you can get the coordinates of your destination, plus save the location to Favorites list or to your Microsoft Outlook contacts list. You can also get the current weather and 5-day forecast for your selected location.
  • Detour: You can click on the Detour icon to calculate an alternate route.
  • Automatic Route Recalculation: If you travel off course, the Garmin Mobile PC will automatically recalculate your route and provide new directions.
  • Trip Computer: The trip computer allows you to view maximum speed, current speed, and current elevation.
  • Text-to-Speech: While navigating a route, the Garmin Mobile PC provides text-to-speech voice prompts. These voice prompts have extensive vocabularies and pronounce the street names (in English only) as you approach turns.
  • Via Point: You can add stops (via points) to your route, and the Mobile PC gives you directions to the via point, and then to the final destination.
  • Saving Routes: After you create a route, you can save it to memory. You can also edit a saved route by adding additional via points, reshaping the route, or changing the route name.

Garmin Online: The menu page contains a link to Garmin Online, where you can download free location-relevant information, such as hotel and fuel prices, live weather data, and flight status information. An Internet connection is required to access Garmin Online.

Easy to install and works as advertised.

Written By Steven, Birmingham, AL on Wednesday, September 10, 2008

The software was easy to install with no issues on my IBM laptop running XP. The USB antenna works sitting on the dash or hanging from any angle on the windshield with the supplied suction cups. Turn up the speaker volume and you have turn by turn directions. The advantage to having this on the laptop veresus the smaller units is having the large full screen view. I was able to import my Waypoints from my Etrex saving the recreation time.
