Worst GPS unit I have ever owned

Written By CC, CA on Tuesday, April 16, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit has great features that are rendered useless as the satellite signal is continually lost. I have never had this issue with other Garmin units. A complete waste of money and in the future I will purchase a different brand.

Pros: Great features for the price

Cons: It loses satellite signal constantly-sometimes cannot regain signal for hours.

This was to replace a Garmin 255. I like it much better than 255. Big screen, and the power switch is a whole lot better. The up grade was slow but no big deal. Yes I would recomend this to others. This makes number 3 Garmin.

Pros: Large screen, push button on & off

Cons: NONE so far

Good, but wouldn't get again

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was to replace a Garmin Nuvi 350 which would not turn on properly. We really liked the unit, so bought another Garmin. The Nuvi 1490LMT unit is large (larger than needed), easy to read and use. What we don't like about it. The search function takes too long, if they ever complete. The edge is shiny reflective plastic which reflects the sun into people's eyes. The traffic gives ads (we actually use the old Nuvi 350 cable to avoid this now). The speech sounds are terrible compared to the old units. There are many names for the same road, so speaking road names is more confusing than helpful. Usually they say a road you couldn't find if looking at signs. The most frustrating thing we have found is the how it handles the timezones. We live within a mile of a timezone border, crossing it all the time. The unit changes its time based on the timezone your in, and the estimated arrival time is for the timezone your going to. The unit is changing time all the time (when turning a curve on the road) and where the timezone is exactly is not known, so your guessing what time it is. Fixing the time, improved speech, and no traffic ads would be a nicer unit.

Pros: bright, easy to read, easy to use. Shows speed limits.

Cons: robotic speak difficult to understand, changing time with timezone, shiny reflects sunlight, searching for a place never returns.

Like it...

I like the big screen and the lane assist. I have yet to put it to a real test.

Pros: Screen size, street names very large at top.

Cons: Unfortunately the increase in size made it difficult finding a place where it did not obstruct driving vision.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great GPS, works well. Only a couple of things I would have different if it were up to me. Every time you power it up you have to agree to their licensing agreement. Not a big deal, just have to hit agree every time you turn it on. That seems unnecessary to me. On some of the older Garmin GPS's, you had more than two choices of voices for the unit. On this one, you only two choices, Jack or Jill. I liked to have more choices such as an Australian or English accent. That would let you change things up and not be bored with the same old voice.

Pros: Large easy to see screen, also easy to program

Very happy with it so far. Audio out would have been a plus. Have had it fir a few weeks and have not used it for long trips yet. Map Update was smooth but took a while.

Pros: Good Solid GPS. Our second Garmin.

Cons: Not thrilled with pop up ads. There should be an opt out feature for stuff one is not interested in. Miss some of the features of my old IQ3600

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great Garmin. I've always expected great products from this company and this GPS, to no surprise, pleased me greatly. It gets reception fast, many P.O.I., great display style, and easy navigation. Very recommended, and Crutchfeild was a great source to get it from.

Pros: Great Reception time, Lots of Points of Interest, Easy to navigate, great larger display, and great layout for the navigation display

Cons: Not really any, the way I had my old one ran was with the charging cable up through the dash and the new cable has a fuse or something so I had to move it, but outside of that nothing was bad.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first GPS that is not integrated into the car, so it took some getting used to as compared to my hard-wired GPS. I am not a fan of the high-detail 3D and much prefer very simple graphics; I have a feeling I am one of the few who feel this way! Since I tend to use the GPS for scouting out new places and not so much for finding my to specific addresses, my purpose is much different than most who use these devices. Bottom line is it works well, has lots of bells and whistles, but won't let me scan a large area without losing all meaningful road info.

Pros: Easy menu; pretty intuitive; some of the eco info is interesting; nice big screen. Good bang for the buck.

Cons: Can't see even the major roads when I pan out too far for the GPS. I have to pick up a paper map to get that perspective. My old hard-wired GPS in a Prius did that quite well. When it reestablishes satellite connection after having lost it for a minute or two, it seems to re-set things like the scale of the map. Kind of annoying.

WARNING: THE TRAFFIC SERVICE IS FREE BECAUSE YOU ENDURE ADVERTISING POP-UPS. this is so annoying that I rarely use the traffic service [If you turn off traffic reporting, the pop-up ads disappear]. Otherwise this is a nice GPS unit. 5 stars.

Cons: ADVERTISING POP-UPS onscreen are really bad

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I give this product 100 STARS!!! This product is just outstanding! No problems whatsoever and at a low price; it is far better than any Garmin products that I ever own (and I own several of them). This was purchased just last Christmas for a gift to my in-laws and they just simply LOVED it (previous users of Magellan).

Pros: Easy and manageable screen display. Even my father-in-law who is 75+ years can handle this new gadget with no problem; very easy compared to the last GPS equipment they have. Now, they even love the "life time" maps and traffic update.

Cons: None

Love this gadget!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this GPS.. It's really fast and accurate.. I have been using this for approximately 3 months now and have no issues so far. I had read about the advertisements in some of the reviews on using the traffic feature, but it does not bother at all! It's just a small heading that even does not block the map. It was a good buy and crutchfield offered a good price as well!

Pros: Fast and accurate

Cons: Non so far

Big screen GPS

Written By Mod, PA on Sunday, January 22, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great upgrade GPS for me. If you need a bang for your buck, you won't be disappointed with 1490LMT.

Pros: Big screen, eco route, and faster recalculation.

Cons: Traffic is not widely available (one big city). It can't find my friend house built in 2009 evn if I got newest map update. I guess because of Navteq. Sometimes it lost signal.

The Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT is a great GPS for a reasonable cost. After getting buying one as a gift last year (2010), I decided to get myself one. Works like a charm.

Pros: Does what it says, very reliable so far.

Cons: None

Works great. I originally bought it for my son to take to college but first used it on vacation last summer and it worked perfectly. We used it to find local restaurants and it even rerouted us around a traffic jam which prevented us from being late to a ball game. I liked it so much I bought a second one for the family car.

Pros: Easy to read screen. Menus are easy to follow.

Cons: Updates take a long time to install.

Not a good GPS

Written By proeng, NYC on Sunday, January 22, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is not a good GPS as expected. Keep loosing Satellite signal over and over. There are bunch of other features which are useful but what good if it does not serve its main purpose. Map re-calculation sometime takes way longer than expected. By the time it re-calculated and gave me new direction I drove off that lane. Garmin should update some firmware to focus on this problems.

Pros: Good features , speaks street name, and map update for life.

Cons: poor satellite reception, loose signal easily and not always find the best route.

Product good, instructions not so much

Written By petslave, Springfield Il on Saturday, January 21, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product is fairly easy to use and the display is good. My only dissatisfaction is with the instructions included for setting up lifetime free updates. The website given in the instructions no longer exists. Garmin's website was not easy to navigate. I ended up getting instructions that worked from another user in a chat room.

Great GPS

Written By Jody, Maryland on Thursday, January 19, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this to replace an older, heavier GPS that kept falling off the windshield (that'll wake you up when you're driving). This screen is bigger, it shows which lane you should be in as you approach a change, and it gives the current speed limit and the speed you are actually going. Also can use it to answer the cellphone. We love it!

Pros: Big screen, good details

Cons: None

Written By Phil, New York, NY on Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I only had two chances to use it since I purchased the 1490LMT. My first Garmin was the Nuvi 350, I purchased the 1490LMT for its blue tooth, lane adviser and a larger screen. While going from 3" to 5", the screen is very crisp and clear boot time was much quicker then Nuvi 350.

Pros: Large screen, boot time, traffic and price.

Cons: The unit rebooted several times while driving for no reason, re-route calculation took longer the expected, power cord/FM Traffic radio cord is like a jumping cable.

Garmin may be a bit overpriced

Written By Dan, Austin, TX on Tuesday, November 29, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For me this unit is not quite worth the price. My mom has an older Garmin unit, smaller than this one, which has more config options on the map (namely zoom) and seems to actually work *better*.

But the maps look good and are easy to read. I also like the 3 hours of battery, so we can take it walking around (though I haven't tried the pedestrian mode yet).

I have not tried Bluetooth yet. It's not a big deal to me, but if it isn't very smooth it will be extra disappointing.

Don't forget that you probably want a bean-bag mount for this unit, and the Garmin one is the best. Shop online for the best price (my wife found it for under $22).

Pros: Nice size screen. Handles glare very well. Fast startup and calculation. Lifetime maps (and traffic too, but that doesn't matter to me).

Cons: Hard to "browse" map by dragging, slow response/redraw and a bit jumpy. No zoom options, like max/min or speed-based, in fact it seems to zoom in/out whenever it wants. Idiotic ads when traffic alerts are on.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ive used the 1490LMT for about 2 months. I'm very happy with how fast the unit recalculates the route if you deviate from the original course. However, the trafic feature is worthless. I receive no warning of upcoming traffic jams and I have been stuck in traffic multiple time and the unit showed no traffic. If you are buying to avoid trafic, don't waste your money. Also, updates take a lot of time. The Garmin site is very slow.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great product that seems to do everything that was in writing so far. I am really happy with it. The only downsides dont really involve the actual product itself as much as the manufacturer. It took quite a while for the map download and dont even try to make heads or tales of which bluetooth phones work with the product because even Garmins Customer Service reps( Very Nice ) have a hard time getting you that info. That tells me that some body got lazy on programming a user friendly information product site. BAD Garmin ! LOL ! That little agravation has me miffed with Garmin.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased new, been very good so far ( using for aprox 2 weeks localy ) Nice features, have not used other than fastest route so far. Very virsital with other functions and accessories. Gave 5 stars Was going to give 4 stars because can not import routes from Google, Googles maps are more current / detailed and Garmin maps do not recognise some directions or the street names. Many streets highways have 2,3 even 4 names numbers assigned to them. Will be using on long trip soon, already used to plan route, love the ability to enter Longitude Latitude settings to find a stop. Over All, this is an excelent product and I would definatly purchase it again.

Pop Up Ads are a big negative

Written By Hannibal, Dunwoody, GA on Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased the Garmin 1490LMT after reading the mostly positive reviews. I agree with most of the other reviewers about ease of use, screen size, screen is easy to see, even in sunlight, etc, so I will not repeat the comments of others. However, the reason I give this otherwise very capable device two stars are the irritating pop up ads. In order to disable the pop up ads, you also have to disable the service that updates traffic conditions and re-routes you in case of a jam. Not a big deal if you don't intend to buy that service, but when I attempted to follow Garmin's instructions both on their website and the owner's manual as to how to turn off the ads, icons they describe as present are not. In fairness to Garmin, these ads pop up only at start up and when your vehicle comes to a stop and is a certain distance from your destination. However, I don't need my GPS to tell me ".... Gasolines are Nitrogen Enriched." I would rate this as four or five stars but for this one big negative. I think it's deceptive on Garmin's part not to point this out in the product description; I would never have bought it had I known it contained this "feature."

The first one we received wouldn't load the software. Received a replacement quickly. Once I d/l the software, I thought it would be great. The maps themselves are good...my device (new one) has locked up twice in the week I've had it.

Got this for my wife [I have a Nuvi 205]. We really like the spoken street name direction feature AND the larger display. Lifetime map updates is also a great feature, but even with a FIOS connection, map updates take a LONG time.

What is it with the duplicate names w\Twn designations ? I looked for a street in Brookline, MA [there is only one Brookline in MA], and I had to select betweeen Brookline Twn and Brookline, MA. The Garmin couldn't find the street in Brookline, MA, but it did find it in Brookline Twn. Say what ?

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've only been using this for about a week, but I am satisfied and pleased overall. I also recommend registering and downloading new software and maps ASAP.

Pros: With traffic inf and route recalculation, this has been a real time and fuel saver for me. Also, wider screen give much better view.

Doesn't come with a household charger- that's extra- but you can use the USB port to charge the unit although that's not clearly stated in the instructions.

Vocal directions are not always as clearly understandable.

The most frustrating defect is that reverse travel direction is sometimes given both verbally and on the display but following the instructions so far have been correct.

Generally works well. At one point it took me up a ramp off a US highway and then directed me back down th on ramp when I should have stayed on. It missed one location in rural northern Mi, but got me within a quarter mile. I had to use a mapquest map I had printed to find my destination. Good display with easy to follow directions. What a great unit, we have only used it a few times now but love everything about it. We had a Garmin prior to this one and the things we didn't like about the old one like not having the speed limit, the overall size, no text to speech and I could go on were added to this new model. We are just super impressed with our upgrade and we are looking forward to years of use.

Great GPS - Love Garmin - Upgrade from old Garmin

Written By JaneG, Boston, MA on Wednesday, February 09, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I agree with the previous reviewers - this is the best GPS for automobile use currently for sale and is a great deal at Crutchfield. Not only did I find the best price on the web here, but when the power cord/FM traffic receiver failed after only 2 weeks, they sent me one the next day. No hassles, just a very nice service rep on the phone who gave me his name and extension and told me to "call him back" if I had any other troubles, which I never did.
As to features on this GPS, I give them an A+ fr the screen size, the touch screen, the easily learned controls, the ability to turn traffic mode on and off (to check highway traffic), and the "eco meter" which has taught me how to drive more efficiently. Cons are the bluetooth - it doesn't pick up my voice well over the car noise, and the eco-route - just don't go there - it will take you way off the fastest route. Overall, with free lifetime map upgrades (value $129) and free traffic for life, with all the best up-to-date features and potential add-ons, this is one powerful and neat GPS! Glad I moved up from my 2007 500C by Garmin.

Garmin 1490LMT a great buy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this on sale at Crutchfield for Christmas 2010 and it was the lowest price it have even been anywhere on the Web. In addition the Crutchfield phone support was excellent and the actually knew the product!

As far as the Garmin 1490LMT, the best thing I can say is that it has features that my $1400 built in GPS in my other car doesn't have, like the Garmin announces ahead of time of traffic ahead. My other GPS just changes colors and hopes I see it in time....! Plus the updates in my other built-in GPS (nissan) will cost me $149 just to updates the maps. The Garmin is a steal if you compare it to most built in factory GPS's.

The Best Model I Have Purchased

Written By TomRaz, Seminole, FL. on Tuesday, February 01, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT has a large 5 inch LCD screen and has lifetime traffic and map updates which is a real bonus.

I have been using my 1490LMT for over one month now and it is working very well. The unit does not lockup and reboot and recalculates very fast.

The routing is very accurate, but I would highly recommend you turn of the traffic selection on the avoidance screen otherwise when traffic delays come up on your route the GPS will automatically reroute you around the delay.

The ECO function is very nice and helps you get better mileage if you attempt to keep the ECO numbers as close to 100 as possible.

The bottom line is this model is a keeper and I am very picky when it comes to GPS units.

Do not hesitate to purchase this unit and Crutchfield is a great place to by from.

I LOVE this GPS! It is very easy to program, and works beautifully. I travel a lot on business, and take it along with me. It has made my life so much easier. I don't have a super fast internet connection, so updating the maps for all of North America took quite awhile ( about 6 hours); fortunately, that isn't something that needs to be done very often. I think that you'll be happy with it. I also got the friction mount to go with it, and it works quite well.

The Garmin nüvi® 1490LMT is my first GPS. I would recommend this GPS to everyone. I have used it on several trips already and have it found to be very accurate. Warning to those whose wives keep an eye on the speedometer. Your speed is displayed on the GPS so there is no arguing your doing the speed limit. The screen size is perfect for the truck. The lifetime maps was a deal maker for me. A bit larger than a Blackberry and heavier if you wanted to carry it in your pocket or purse.

Bluetooth probamatical

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unit would sync with the phone bluetooth connection each inital try, only to fail after each re-start of the 1490. My phone is an 16GB G I-phone (latest OS) which works well with two other Garmin GPS units in the household. Contacted Garmin and arranged a repair. They returned a refurbished unit which will now finds the I-Phone every time. The only difference to the other two Garmin units is the Phone Book doesn't show up in the 1490 display. The Phone Book shows up on both of the other units after a minute or two.

Everything you need from Free Maps, Traffic, and Blue Tooth Hands free

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was pleased with the autorerouting traffic navigation, especially having many alternates to choose from in the Chicago area. The updates are far better than just the visual queues I was receiving from google maps on my phone.

I was not as pleased with the audio quality of the built in microphone, the microphone, may pick up road nose even though windows maybe rolled up. Many people on the other end felt I was talking in a tunnel. However, having used other speaker type devices in the car I really felt no difference. I had no issues hearing others on a conference call while driving. So all in all I was very happy that I could operate handsfree with the device.

Very good navigator

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like this navigator a lot. It's my 3rd or 4th garmin. I really like the lane change and the fact that it shows both the current speed and speed limit even when a destination is programmed. I didn't give it 5 stars because it's missing some of the features my old 700 series had that I liked. It doesn't warn me as readily verbally of traffic ahead and doesn't give as much detail when there is a traffic issue. I also preferred the connection on my old one, where I could just snap it in and out. This 1490 has a cord that plugs into the back, much harder to do while driving if I've forgotten to put it up. All in all, it is a very good navigator.

Garmin 1490LMT Works for me

Written By Directionless, Seattle, WA on Monday, January 24, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My second Garmin bought to get bigger screen and lifetime maps. Updating maps on older garmin was 50% the cost of a new GPS. Likes - size and colors of the screen, maps I've tried seem to be up-to-date, like smart phone you can slide your finger to move between some screens but not resize the screen. Neutral - not impressed with the ecoRoute that I tried, connection slow and needs very clear path (previous Garmin was more forgiving), traffic feature was OK (tried once) but this is to be discontinued in 2012 so do not buy for this feature, carrying cases are $20 or more and I could not find a small camera case similar to what I had used previously but I had a soft case from a 5" external hard drive that works but I would prefer the carrying versatility(pocket, belt loop, neck strap) of a small (not large) camera case especially for use while walking or bicycling. Dislikes - Loading updates took hours (I went to bed and let it run overnight), limited choice of voices out of the box, you have to download more from a limited selection or else buy, I also thought this came with map links to public transit but you have to pay $10 for each city - ouch!

Love this GPS but loses satellite reception too often

Written By ChuckB, St. Louis County on Monday, January 24, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like this GPS, the large screen, features, graphics, etc. except that it loses satellite reception way too often. Sometime this is obvious and sometimes it's not. It may display Lost Satellite Reception or you may just glance down and notice it shows you on the wrong road with incorrect mph. I am just putting up with it for now (it works about 90% of the time) and hopefully there will be a software or firmware update down the road to address this.

Great Features

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the features this unit offers. I am a Realtor and the point to point map routing is awesome as well as the trip log. The only thing I really do not care for is the quality of the bluetooth connection. I have had many complaints from the people I am speaking to through the GPS and my cell phone that the quality is poor. Overall I am very happy with this product.

GPS is great, maps aren't

Written By MarkintheGardens, Palm Beach Gardens, FL on Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first mobile automotive GPS purchase. I have a handheld GPS from another maker for use when hiking. This also is the second Garmin device I've owned. The first one was for marine use.

This unit is feature-laden. The display is large and crystal clear. The voice directions are very good although they aren't always on target with pronunciation (what do you expect from a computer?) This one can link to my cell phone with bluetooth and the ability to call using the GPS as a speaker-phone is a great idea. The intersection detail really helps when you are in unknown territory.

My ONLY reservation is not so much about the unit itself, but with the mapping software. Generally, I have been disappointed with the level of detail, even after downloading the latest maps from Garmin.

On a recent trip, much of it over Interstate highways, major roadway features weren't shown. Rest areas, Exit numbers, service plazas on the FL Turnpike and other major map elements were missing.

I haven't checked to see if other, more detailed maps, are available. Since the ones I have are included with the product and are lifetime upgradable, it's possible Garmin stripped away some of the useful map information to reduce costs. I still wouldn't give it up, but this is a major shortcoming IMHO.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this GPS about 3 months ago. I researched GPSs for months and finally decided this garmin was the right choice for me. I have not been disappointed. It is ocassionally slow downloading maps like others have stated thru my research but nothing that prevents me from getting what I need. The bluetooth technology is good but most people can't hear me clearly when I speak. The microphone leaves a lot to be desired. You can save yourself some money and purchase a different GPS that doesn't have the bluetooth technology. I got this one for a steal during the Black Friday shopping timeframe. No regrets.

Not as great as I had hoped

This is my second Garmin. I love my first one and decided my husband and I should have one in each car. I have gotten seriously lost about four times using the new one. Even though the maps on this one should be more updated, it seems like they are not.

Great GPS

Written By Boda, Tullahoma, TN on Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is our second Garmin GPS.
Our first one is Nuvi 350 which we love and still use (even with the 2006 map set)
We needed a second GPS for my wife's car and decided on the 1490..
The 1490 LMT boots up and acquires satellites so much faster than the 350 and has the same basic software features that we liked in our 350.
The larger screen size is great and the units volume will blow you out of the front seat if it is turned up above 80%.
The best thing about the unit is the life time maps. We have had our 350 for four years and plan to have this one as long as it will run.
The only negative I can think of are the advertisements that pop up every once in awhile when you drive through populated areas. This doesn't affect the GPS operation.
We just ignor it and it eventually goes away.
I would recommend buying the garmin friction dashboard mount for this unit though.
I would not trust the window mount with this larger and heavier unit.
I have a hard time keeping my much smaller and lighter 350 on the windshield sometimes.

Simply amazing!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought my first GPS this past Thanksgiving (a Garmin nüvi 1300). I was impressed with its capabilities. I tried a nüvi 1450LMT before Christmas but it and its replacement had intermittent shut down problems from day one so back it went. When I learned about the 1490LMT I was simply amazed. I hadn't read of users complaining about the shutdown problem so gave it a try. I have had the 1490 for only 8 days so far but everything works great. I had a Blue Tooth enabled TracFone (Samsung 301G) but it did NOT link up with the 1490 no matter what I tried. Since the local dollar store had an LG420G on sale for only $10 I decided to give it a try. It works with the 1490 just fine. The audio quality is fantastic on both sides of the call. It's not on Garmin's "officially recognized" Blue Tooth cell phone compatible list but when in doubt, give it a try! I'm glad I did. The nüvi reports the LG's battery level, signal strength, call history, address book as well as accesses the nüvi's address book ("Points of Interest") and allows me to make calls using the nüvi's keypad. One of the first things I did with the 1490 was update the system software, then maps and finally the voice files. You can do this by downloading the WebUpdater app on Garmin's site. This is my first Crutchfield purchase and I was very impressed with their customer service and attention to detail. Their policies are great too. I definitely recommend you give them your business.

I have been searching for the right GPS for use in my job. I travel the Southwest region of Va - TN and drive about 4500 miles per month in my car. I have searched numerous web sites and read many reviews and comparisons and found that the Garmin nuvi lineup offers the best range of features. The main features I was looking for were Lifetime Map updates and Bluetooth, the Lifetime traffic options is nice ONLY if you live in a big city. I checked the FM coverage of the USA . (If you buy a unit without Free Lifetime Map update you will spend an avg cost of $80 per update!)
I have had my GPS unit since Christmas and once I updated ( which took 2 hours only due to my slow service provider) only about 45 minutes with High Speed used at my office. I go into some really rural/country areas and this unti provides GREAT direction!! The Bluetooth is AWESOME!! very clear and the person on the other end states it is very clear no background noise!! Some have thought I was in my office! It gives great options like Call History, Address Book, Speed Dial Home, Voice Dialing- This is the BEST Feature!! The 5 inch screen is very nice and the volume is sometimes TOO LOUD and I have to turn down. This is a good bang for your buck!! I would recomend to a friend!!

One of the Best GPS Units Ever!

Written By Todd A, Palos Heights, IL on Sunday, December 19, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit after having a bad experience with a Cobra brand GPS that never
worked right. This is my 5th GPS unit in over 10 years. Straight out of the box, the Garmin
Nuvi 1490LMT set up quickly and was intuitive to use. The map updates are a bit slow,
but for the amount of data being transferred, that is to be expected. Just allow enough time
to complete that before needing to use it. Having FREE Lifetime Map Updates and Free
Traffic Updates is a real $$$ saver. Most companies charge for the service or updates
after 30 days of ownership. Overall, its maps are very accurate and I think the
improved "Lane Guidance" feature is wonderful when travelling in unfamiliar areas. The 5"
screen is clear and easily visible. I also like the Bluetooth Phone functions to maintain
handsfree calls while driving, since that is becoming law everywhere. I love this GPS so
much, I am even taking it on vacation with me to use in my rental! It is an exceptional GPS,
so buy it already!

A great GPS with a slow, tiny memory

Written By NateM, Iowa on Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Pros: Bluetooth, FM Traffic receiver, storage expandable via MicroSD card, and large screen. I've been using this device for a month with two map updates and two system updates that have improved it even further.

Cons: It's 2010 Garmin, come on. Full speed USB (read: VERY slow), 1 GB of internal storage, map updates that take 2+ hours total on your "average" internet connection, cannot use generic Mini B USB car chargers to power the unit on the go.

Other thoughts: I've been using this unit for a month now and have used it everywhere I go. I found the EcoRoute kind of lame at first, but once it learned my driving habits, it's become more useful of refining my driving habits. The automatically created tracks is a great source for info when downloaded to your computer for reviewing your average speed, how long your commute takes, and what your actual average speed is.

Lastly, don't expect your old Moto or any Mini B USB car charger to power this unit on the go. The Garmin sees it as a "computer" connection and will not let you switch out of that mode. I tried blocking off the data pins to see if that would work, but to no avail. I have reason to believe it looks at voltages and determines it's mode that way.

I gave it 4/5 stars because of the lack of built-in storage, slow 1.1 USB, and inability to use cheap, generic Mini B USB power.

So Far So Good

Written By DTD, Fairfax,VA on Thursday, November 11, 2010

My usage is limited, but am so far I am impressed. This unit works better than the one in my wife's Lexus, which costs five times a s much. Dashboard mounting is never pretty, but given my budget, this was the only was to go. I was also glad to see that Crutchfield had a competitive price. I like that company a lot.

NOTE: I did not give a five star rating because I have had exposure to only three GPS units in my life and that is not enough experience to hand out a five star rating.

This is my 1st gps unit and I researched for one easy to use, lots of features, and good display. Very pleased with the 1490LMT. Once I learn something, I often keep it for a while so the lifetime maps update will be nice. Just took my first trip with it and very intuitive to set up and use. I liked the pedestrian mode for sight seeing. Screen is very clear and easy to navigate.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Garmin makes so many Nuvi models choosing which one was more difficult than setting one up and using it. I chose the 1490LMT for it's widescreen and free lifetime traffic and map updates.

My job as a field engineer takes me to many locations. The large screen is very easy to see, lane assist very helpful, storing favorites and entering addresses is also very easy.

Today it even with it's own voice said "Severe traffic ...recalculating". I drove the new suggested alternate route and watched cars on a 4 lane highway barely moving as a passed them on on my route.

Good layout, graphics & response time

I bought this to replace an older obsolete Garmin.
Buttons are well laid out, graphics are high resolution, response time for satellite location is excellent. Bluetooth interface works well with my LG Incite phone. Added features like ECO driving, bluetooth, trip cost, etc. are nice geeky items that I enjoy. Use it for my daily commute for traffic avoidance - works well, and with lifetime maps & traffic updates should be good for years.

We love our Garmin !!! We don't know how we lived without one all this time. We just took a 2500 mile trip to different points of interest from Florida to the parkway in NC, to WV, Northern PA, Hersyey, Lancaster Pa, Philadeliphia and back home. We were never lost, always had reception no matter how remote the area and points of interest were always available. We loved the big screen and that the Garmin even told us which direction we would be turning at our next point so you were always in the correct lane.

Navigation Features

Map Software: The nüvi 1490-LMT comes loaded with City Navigator North America NT 2011.10 software, which contains mapping detail of the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The maps feature nearly 6-million points of interest (POIs), such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs and attractions.

Free Lifetime Map Updates: The Garmin nüvi 1490-LMT includes free lifetime map updates which give you the most up-to-date maps for the life of the Garmin GPS unit. You can activate your free lifetime map updates service at www.mygarmin.com and download up to four map updates per year as soon as they become available. It can only be used for this Garmin GPS unit. Due to limited built-in memory and the possibly increasing size of the map updates, an optional microSD card (2 GB or larger) may be required.

Note: Free Lifetime Map Updates entitle you to receive up to 4 map data updates per year, as updates are made available on the Garmin website, for this specific Garmin product only until this product's useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. The updates you receive will be updates to the geographic map data included with your Garmin product when originally purchased.

microSD Memory Slot: The nüvi 1490-LMT has a microSD memory slot for additional map data from optional microSD memory cards. The unit can also display photo images from a microSD memory card.

Antenna: The unit has a built-in antenna in its top panel. In order to obtain an optimal signal, the unit must have a clear, unobstructed view of the sky. It the unit is mounted in a vehicle with a coated windshield or an in-screen heating system, there may be difficulty in obtaining a good signal.

Touch Screen Display: The unit features a bright, 5" (diagonal) LCD with touch screen controls. The display has a resolution of 480 x 272 pixels, with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and 64,000 colors. The screen has a manual brightness adjustment.

Keyboard Options: The nüvi 1490-LMT gives you two options for keyboard layouts. When you are entering an address or other data, you can choose between a standard QWERTY keyboard layout or an ABCDE alphabetical layout.

Information Pages: The information provided by the nüvi 1490-LMT is found on various display screens called pages. The pages give you the following information:

  • Map:
    • Indicates real-time moving map illustrating your current position and intended route
    • Shows map scale and geographic details such as lakes, rivers, highways and towns
    • Allows you to zoom, pan, and point using the touch screen controls
    • When you are following a route, your arrival time is displayed in the lower left corner, your current speed is shown in the lower right corner. The posted speed limit for most major roads is displayed near the lower right corner as well.
    • When you are simply driving while viewing the Map page (not following a route), your speed is shown in the lower right corner (along with the road's speed limit), the direction you are driving is shown in the lower left corner
  • Trip Information:
    • Shows current compass heading while moving
    • Indicates current speed, maximum speed, arrival time, distance and time to next turn
    • Calculates driving time, stopped time and total time
    • Displays overall distance traveled (odometer) and distance to your final destination
  • Current Route:
    • Displays a list of turn-by-turn instructions for your entire route as well as arrival information
    • Shows direction of each turn and distance
  • Next Turn:
    • Shows the next turn on the map and the distance and time left before you reach the turn

Where Am I?: The "Where Am I?" feature gives you instant access to important information in case of an emergency. When you select "Where Am I?" from the menu, you get the coordinates (including elevation) of your current position, plus the nearest address and intersections. There are also buttons to help you locate the nearest hospitals, police stations, gas stations, and roadside assistance. You can also save the location for future reference.

Where To?: During navigation, you can search for places by pressing "Menu", then "Where To?" You can select an Address, Go Home, Points of Interest, Recently Found, Favorites, Extras, Intersections, Cities, Browse Map, and Coordinates. You can also access Spell Name for direct entry of your new destination, or browse the map. You can search for locations near your present location (default), or select a different city, your current route, or your destination.

Custom Points of Interest: The nüvi 1490-LMT will accept custom points of interest (POI) databases, available from various companies on the Internet. Some custom POI databases contain alert information for points such as safety cameras and school zones, and the unit can notify you as you approach one of these points. To download custom POIs, you will need the Garmin POI Loader software, available on Garmin's website.

Usage Modes: The nüvi 1490-LMT can be used in any of three usage modes: automotive, pedestrian, and bicycle.

Vehicle Icons: The default on-screen icon representing your vehicle is a blue sports car. In the menu, you can select a blue 4WD pickup truck, a blue compact car, a blue 3D arrow, a pair of boots, a large bird, or a rolling beach ball. You can also download other vehicle icons from the "Garmin Garage" website.

Map Orientation: You can select one of three map orientation displays:

  • 2D Track Up: two-dimensional map that constantly displays the route from top to bottom on the screen
  • 2D North Up: two-dimensional map that constantly displays North at the top of the screen
  • 3D Track Up: three-dimensional map that constantly displays the route from top to bottom on the screen

Screen Color Mode: You can select one of three color modes for the display screen:

  • Daytime: has a lighter, brighter background
  • Nighttime: has a black background, easier to see at night
  • Auto: display automatically switches between daytime and nighttime at sunrise and sunset

Route Preferences: When calculating a route, you can select the following preferences: faster time, shorter distance, less fuel, or off road.

Lane Assist with Junction View: As you navigate your route, the unit will provide detailed diagrams of the proper lane to travel when maneuvering a complex interchange. The Junction View page will display what the actual approaching junction looks like, and arrows indicating the lane in which you should be driving.

ecoRoute: The ecoRoute feature calculates your vehicle's fuel economy, carbon footprint, and the fuel price of navigating to a destination. It also offers tools for improving fuel efficiency. Through ecoRoute's Fuel report and Mileage Report, you can track fuel usage and gas mileage during each trip. There is also a driving challenge to help you maximize your fuel economy by scoring your driving habits.

Avoidances: You can program the unit to avoid certain things that may be undesirable on your route. Examples of things that can be avoided include U-Turns, Highways, Toll Roads, Carpool Lanes, Unpaved Roads, and Ferries.

Custom Routes: The nüvi 1490-LMT allows you to create custom routes for errands, deliveries, or sales calls, and automatically sort the destinations in the most efficient order. You can save up to 10 routes, specify via points, and preview simulated turns on the unit's display.

Waypoints: You can manually mark and name any map position as a waypoint for later recall. Up to 1000 waypoints can be saved into memory.

Indoor Use: When indoors, you can activate the built-in simulator and practice using the unit. This turns off the GPS receiver so it's not searching for satellites.

Tools: The nüvi 1490-LMT offers several tools you can use as you travel:

  • World Clock: The world clock allows you to display the current time for four locations throughout the world. You can also display a map of the world showing which portions are in daylight and which are in darkness.
  • Currency Converter: This feature allows you to update the currency rates manually so you are always using the most current information.
  • Unit Converter: You can convert area, distance, speed, temperature, volume, and weight.
  • Calculator: The calculator allows you to perform simple arithmetic.

Garmin Lock: Garmin Lock is an anti-theft feature. You can set a 4-digit PIN and a security location (such as your home or office). Every time the nüvi 1490-LMT is powered on, you must enter the PIN, or drive to your security location.

Traffic Information

FM Traffic: The nüvi 1490-LMT can receive traffic information broadcast over the FM Radio Data System (RDS), when connected to the supplied Garmin GTM 25 FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) receiver. When you are in a coverage area, the traffic delays are rated by severity with color-coded icons. If you encounter severe traffic along your route, the unit will automatically recalculate the route for you to avoid traffic delays. The nüvi 1490-LMT includes a product lifetime subscription to NAVTEQ Traffic. Traffic information is available in approximately 50 North American cities.

Note: Free Lifetime Traffic Updates may not be transferred to another person or another Garmin product. Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver (as long as you own a compatible Garmin GPS) or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter. Traffic content not available for all areas.

Picture Viewer

Picture Viewer: The nüvi 1490-LMT can display photo images (JPEG files). The image files must be stored on an optional microSD memory card or transferred to the internal memory.

Photo Navigation: The Panoramio (www.panoramio.com) website provides photographs that include location information called geotags. These photos can be downloaded into the nüvi 1490-LMT or microSD memory card, and the unit can route you to the location.

Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Communication: Many Bluetooth-capable cellular phones are compatible with the nüvi 1490-LMT allowing you to use the nüvi as a hands-free car kit. The nüvi 1490-LMT has both a microphone and speaker, so no additional equipment is necessary to integrate your Bluetooth phone. Available options will vary by phone, however, generally these apply:

  • accept or ignore incoming calls on the touch screen
  • dial your home number
  • enter a number manually
  • call a POI (Point Of Interest)
  • dial a number in your phone book
  • call a recently dialed number
  • dial a recent caller
  • send or receive text messages

Bluetooth Compatibility: Visit http://my.garmin.com/bluetooth/phones.faces for a complete list of Bluetooth compatible mobile phones.

Mounting Options

Mounting: The unit should be securely installed when used in a vehicle. The unit comes with a mounting bracket that includes a suction cup. The suction cup can be used to mount the unit to the windshield. Once the nüvi 1490-LMT is mounted, it can be adjusted on the ball-and-socket bracket for best visibility. The unit must be installed where it has a relatively unobstructed view of the sky.

Power Requirements

Rechargeable Batter: The nüvi 1490-LMT operates on your vehicle's battery using the included 12-volt cigarette lighter power adapter, the built-in Lithium-Ion batteries, or household current using an optional AC adapter (sold separately). The Lithium-Ion batteries provide up to 3 hours of use after a 4-hour charge. Stored data, such as waypoints or unit settings, are not lost when the unit is disconnected from a power source.

Computer Requirements

Internal Memory: The nüvi 1490-LMT comes with an internal memory for storage of supplemental maps and photos. When the unit is connected to your computer, the nüvi 1490-LMT is recognized as a USB Mass Storage device.

The unit has a standard Mini-USB Version 2.0 jack. The unit is compatible with Windows 2000 or later and Mac OS X 10.4 or later.
