Can't ask for more. Unmarked yardage on a course & cart path only rules don't come into play with this on your wrist & eliminates the need to carry your hand-held unit.

Pros: Always with you & you never leave it behind in the cart. Especially nice when you're playing a course for the first time. No-fee subscription service beats any competitor's product.

Cons: * None to date!

Harming S1

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Usedit Monday. Can't believe I'm playing golf in February, but this watch really enhanced the round. So convenient to just be able to look on your wrist and know the distance to the hole. No more searching around the hole for yardage markers. I love it

Pros: Easy to use. Courses pre programmed. Don't have to worry about where to put it when you take a shot, it's right there on your wrist. I have seen guys with other GPS units get their distance and then look around for a place to put the unit. Very accurate. Very light on your wrist, I have watches that are heavier than this unit.

Cons: Did'nt fix my slice. A little golf humor. Actually I have found none as yet.

Garmin Approach S1

Written by: EJohnB from San Diego, CA on February 2, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Approach S1 is, in comparison with any other device I use, THE easiest to set up and use and of the GPS devices, by far the fastest to locate satellites and begin functioning. Even when I play a course with the latest GPS's in the carts I still use the S1 for a quick reference in "ready golf" situations. For the price, this is simply the most convenient distance meaurement tool I've used in the last half dozen years.

Pros: Easy and quick to set-up and recharge. Extremely fast to begin the round at the course - best of the GPS's I know of (or that my buddies use).

Cons: A very minor negative - might be slightly bulky of a woman's slender wrist - it is the size but not quite the weight of a Rolex(tm) man's watch.

Slick Little Device

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very handy and accurate device. It is very light and does not flop around on your wrist at all; very stable. I've stood on several course markers and the device and the marker have been pretty much identical. It is a very simple device to use and switching holes (if for example you play the back nine first) is very fast. Highly recommended if you want a handy, no frills golf GPS unit. Garmin makes excellent stuff. Lastly, as usual, Crutchfield's handling of the order was excellent.

Pros: Accurate, light and easy to use.

Cons: Nothing comes to mind.

Garmin S1 GPS Golf Watch

Written by: Bob B from Crossville, TN on February 1, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This watch is wonderful. No more bulky binocular style rangefinders or handheld GPS units to deal with. Yardage calculation is as easy as checking the time on a watch. Haven't found a course I play or intend to play that's not loaded into the units memory. The best invention since the wheel.

Pros: Ease of use. Yardages to front, middle and back of green. Calculates distance of shots. 10,000 courses loaded into watch. Cost is lower than many golf GPS units.

Cons: Does not show distances to hazards. Battery life on a single charge could be longer. Charger hookup can be a little tedious but not a real problem.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I've used the GPS four or five times on two differnt courses. It is very easy to use and seems to be very accurate. I find it very helpful an convenient to use. It would be nice if it provided a bit more information like distance to bunkers.

Pros: Accurate and very easy to use.

Cons: The only negative is having to recharge it after each use, but this not difficult.

I purchased this device, the white one, for my wife for Christmas. She loves it! It's always handy when playing, is preloaded with a multitude of courses, and is very accurate. If I didn't already have a belt clip golf GPS I would buy one for myself.

A little difficult to operate at first in trying to shut down and measure shots.

Pros: I really like the NO annual fee + tech support. It's nice to have yardage info at your wrist.

Cons: I have a golflogix so I miss having the yardage to hazards and bunkers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this product. It just works. I use it on courses I know but it really helps. I don't need every landmark yardage; just front, back and middle of the greens. Well done. The service was also great. Quick and efficient.

Pros: ease of use.

Cons: none.

We have two Garmin S1's and will now dump our Skycaddies. The S1 is easier to operate, faster to load and acquire satellites and doesn't require an annual subscription fee.

Pros: Low price, highly durable, doubles as a wrist watch, accurate, compact

Cons: Doesn't have hole detail beyond distance to front, back & center of green, but who cares? Time between battery charges is limitedbutso is Skycaddie.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Garmin is a great product and is very accurate.

Pros: Has all of my local courses in their system. Seems to have very accurate distances.

Cons: You need to pay attention to the battery level. Did have the watch go down in the middle of the golf round.

Easy to use, has the information I need right on my wrist. No buttons that I need to fiddle with and the print on the screen is able to be read without my reading glasses. It finds the course I am playing and the hole I am playing automatically. I'm just under a bogey golfer and the distance to the green is all I really want to know. It has all the courses I play in Florida on it and after I contacted Garmin last year telling them my home course in Ontario Canada was not included in their course databank, it now (as of summer 2011) also has my home course in Canada on it.

Easy to use, gives me all that I need to know as a high handicap. The best part is when you get out of the cart you don't need to reach for anything and you don't slow down play.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Does not have nearly as many courses as my sky caddie had. It also does not have my home course on it . Do not buy until you are sure it has the courses you play on it. My home course is an 18 hole country club that is 40 yrs old. You would think it would be on it.

Editors Note: A software update released in July 2011 added 450 new courses to the internal database.

Product Research

Overview: The Garmin Approach S1W is a wrist-worn golf GPS unit combined with a lightweight sports watch. Its memory contains distance information for more than 17,000 pre-loaded golf courses. The Approach S1W uses a high-sensitivity GPS receiver to measure individual shot distances and track how far you walk on the course. No subscriptions or setup fees are required. Approach S1W is compliant with USGA rules. For convenience, the Approach S1W has an alarm to wake you up in the morning.

Display: The Approach S1W has a 1" x 1" monochrome LCD with a resolution of 64 x 32 pixels. The display's Hole View indicates the number of the hole being played, the distance to the back, center, and front of the green, and the par for the hole. On-screen icons display a low battery warning, GPS use, and alarm active indication.

Included Maps: The Approach S1W has the CourseView Lite map data loaded in its built-in flash memory. The data contains distance information to the front, back, and center of the greens for more than 17,500 golf courses in the U.S. and Canada. A free map update is available from the Garmin website, and can be downloaded from your PC to the Approach S1W using the supplied USB/charging clip cable.

Functionality: As you play, the Approach S1W automatically updates your position, giving you the exact yardage to the front, center, and back of the green. Because pin placement varies, distance to the actual pin location is not calculated. You can also measure the distance of a particular shot.

Controls: The unit has four buttons around the face, each with multiple functions. The button functions include:

  • Light/Power: for turning on the backlight, and for turning the device on or off
  • Up: for scrolling up through menus, holes, and settings
  • Down: for scrolling down through menus, holes, and settings
  • OK/Menu: for selecting menu options, or to open the menu

Watch: In addition to its GPS functions, the Approach S1W is a digital watch. By default, the watch time is set automatically when the device acquires satellite signals. You can also set the time manually. The watch also has an alarm.

Odometer: The Approach S1W has a built-in odometer to measure your total walking distance as you play the round. You can turn the odometer off if you desire.

Power Requirements: The Approach S1W operates on a 200 mAh rechargeable Lithium-ion, coin cell battery. In the GPS mode, a fully charged battery should give you up to 8 hours of continuous use. The Power Save mode turns off the GPS receiver after a period of inactivity, and displays only the time and date. If you are using the unit in the Power Save mode continuously, a fully charged battery should provide up to 3 weeks of battery life.

Battery Charging: The unit comes with an AC adapter with a slide-in type U.S. power plug and a Type A USB port. Using the supplied USB cable and charging clip, you can charge the battery using ordinary household current.

Waterproof: The Approach S1W is waterproof to IED Standard 60529 IPX7, which means that it can withstand immersion in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes.
