How 3D TV works

3D TV Learn more

3D TVs present a slightly different view to each eye, and that's what creates the illusion that images begin in front of and extend well behind the actual screen. When you combine the 3D-capable KDL-40HX800 with Sony's 3D Sync Transmitter and 3D glasses (sold separately), you can enjoy vivid 3D viewing at home. Add a 3D-capable Sony Blu-ray player for the highest-quality 3D experience.

An LED backlight delivers a dynamic picture using less power

This HDTV's "Deep Black Panel" offers outstanding picture contrast, and black levels that get really black. Images pop with the vibrant, natural colors that demonstrate why an LED backlight is superior to a conventional fluorescent. Also, LEDs are more energy-efficient than fluorescent backlights. Other clever "eco" features include a "presence sensor" that detects if you've stepped away from your TV and automatically turns the picture off.

Motionflow™ PRO 240Hz ensures naturally smooth motion

Motionflow™ 240Hz

Sony has been refining its Motionflow anti-blur processing for years and today it's one of the most sophisticated and effective solutions. This 240Hz version quadruples the video frame rate by inserting three entirely new frames for each original frame. The system creates seamlessly smooth, sharp pictures by analyzing the motion of specific on-screen objects as well as overall movement.

Connect to all the latest HD sources — and to the Web

Four HDMI inputs let you enjoy the best possible picture from high-def sources like Blu-ray players, satellite TV receivers, and HD game consoles. Connect this Sony to your broadband Internet service and you can use the TV's remote to surf 25+ web "channels" from the comfort of your sofa. Deep Black LCD Panel: The Sony Bravia KDL-40HX800 features a deep black LCD panel for better contrast and black levels.

Dynamic Edge LED Backlight: The Sony Bravia KDL-40HX800 TV utilizes Dynamic Edge LED Backlighting for an infinite dynamic contrast with brilliant blacks and whites, smooth motion performance, and energy savings inside a slim designed cabinet. Dynamic Edge LED Backlight allows you to optimize contrast by adjusting brightness in individual sections of the screen.

Bravia Engine 3 Technology: Bravia Engine 3 is Sony's most advanced processing system for superior image detail, exceptionally vibrant, life-like images, reduced noise and optimized contrast and color. This fully digital video processor from Sony uses a collection of enhanced algorithms to significantly reduce noise, enhance overall image detail, and optimize contrast so every scene produces sharp, vibrant, life-like images.

NTSC/ATSC/QAM Tuners: The TV is equipped with an analog NTSC tuner, a digital ATSC/8VSB tuner, and a digital QAM tuner for receiving unscrambled digital cable channels. It is not CableCARD compatible. You do not need to connect an external HDTV set-top box in order to receive High-Definition programming.

Native Resolution: The KDL-40HX800 has a full HD native resolution of 1920 x 1080 with over 2 million pixels (more than twice the pixels of 720p HDTV). The TV's four HDMI inputs can accept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p and 1080p (60/24Hz) signals, and the two component video inputs can accept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p signals. All video signals from standard definition and high definition are upconverted to 1080p.

HD Video Inputs: The Sony Bravia KDL-40HX800 provides High Definition HDMI and component video inputs.

  • 4 HDMI (ver.1.4) Inputs: The KDL-40HX800 features four HDMI 1.4 inputs (2 Rear/2 Side). The HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) terminals provide an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface between this TV and any HDMI-equipped A/V equipment.. The HDMI input will accept 1080 (60/24Hz), 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals. The rear-panel HDMI 4 input shares a 3.5mm audio jack with the television's PC input. With an HDMI-to-DVI cable, you can connect the TV to a DVI-equipped A/V component. When connecting to a DVI-equipped component, the 3.5mm audio input is used and separate minijack audio cable must be connected.
  • Component Video Input: The two rear-panel component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals. If needed, the Component Video 1 input can be used as a composite video input (480i only) instead.

Note: There is also a side-panel composite video input (480i only).

ARC (Audio Return Channel) Function: The Audio Return Channel in HDMI 1.4 enables the TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver or surround audio controller, increasing system flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. The ARC function enables digital output of sound using the television's HDMI In 1 port and can only be operated when the TV is connected to an audio receiver that also supports the ARC function. When the Input Source of the television is the TV (antenna), the ARC function allows audio from the TV to be heard through a connected AV receiver via the television's HDMI 1 input. The audio is sent from the TV to your receiver via a single HDMI cable without the need for a separate optical cable.

Note: When connecting a digital audio system that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC) technology, connect to HDMI IN 1 with an HDMI cable. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.

3D Ready: The Sony KDL-40HX800 gives you the option to enjoy 3D (three-dimensional) pictures and graphics. You can enjoy an immersive, realistic movie and gaming experience in Full HD 1080p using Sony's proprietary 3D accessories (3D Sync Transmitter and 3D Active Glasses, both sold separately) and connecting a compatible 3D-ready Blu-ray Disc Player, Satellite Receiver, or PlayStation3 gaming console (all sold separately) to the HDTV  via HDMI. When viewed through the active shutter glasses, the on-screen image is precisely synchronized and delivered with the Full HD 1080p image intact, for an optimum 3D viewing experience. Sony's 3D technology displays high speed synchronized left- and right-eye images to deliver an immersive 3D experience. And since each frame you see is shown at Full HD resolution, the 3D action still offers razor-sharp detail. You can adjust the following 3D settings.

  • Display Mode: For switching between 3D and 2D display modes.
  • 3D Depth Adjustment: For adjusting the depth of the 3D image on the screen.
  • Simulated 3D Effect: Use to heighten or lessen the 3D effect when you display 2D pictures in simulated 3D.
  • 3D Glass Brightness: For setting the image brightness when using 3D display mode. By selecting "Auto", image brightness through the 3D glasses is automatically adjusted in conjunction with the "Scene Select" setting.
  • 3D Format: Select between 3 types of 3D formats based on your video content.
    • Simulated: for viewing regular 2D pictures in simulated 3D
    • Side-by-Side: selecting this displays two near-identical pictures side-by-side for 3D viewing (wear the 3D Glasses before setting "3D Format" as the instructions will otherwise be unreadable because of doubly-blurred letters on the screen)
    • Over-Under: selecting this displays two near-identical pictures one above the other for 3D viewing (wear the 3D Glasses before setting "3D Format" as the instructions will otherwise be unreadable because of doubly-blurred letters on the screen)

Note: The 3D display mode is automatically selected when a 3D signal is detected. The recommended viewing angle and distance for 3D viewing is 120° (left/right) at 3.3'-19.6875'.

24pTrue Cinema (24p Input Capability): Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sony wisely takes advantage of this by including 24p input capability via HDMI on this television producing images that are smooth and natural looking.

Motion Pro 240Hz Technology: Motionflow Pro 240Hz is a proprietary technology that displays TV broadcasts at an outstanding high-frame rate. By displaying pictures at a higher frame rate than standard, Motionflow Pro 240Hz reduces motion artifacts in high-speed sports footage for smooth, natural motion reproduction. This allows you to experience smooth motion detail and clarity using Motionflow Pro 240Hz technology. Motionflow Pro 240Hz technology quadruples the frame rate from the standard 60 frames per second and applies Image Blur Reduction technology to deliver a crisp, fluid and realistic viewing experience during fast-action scenes. The Motionflow Pro 240Hz feature has three settings to choose from - High, Standard, or Off.

Infinite Dynamic Contrast Ratio: Dynamic contrast ratio compares the luminance of a 100 IRE (white) signal with that of a 0 IRE (black) signal. When the TV receives a 0 IRE signal the backlight is turned off and the luminance measurement is 0.00 cd/m2. The resulting dynamic contrast ratio is infinite.

Ambient Sensor: The Ambient Sensor automatically optimizes the picture settings according to the ambient light in the room. The television's Ambient Sensor automatically senses ambient lighting conditions and changes the TV's display settings to optimize picture quality. The sensor detects ambient light levels to adjust the brightness and color temperature of the picture. With this feature you can have the best picture quality under your room's lighting conditions. As a result, you get a natural looking picture whether you are watching TV late at night or during the day.

Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE): The televisions Advance Contrast Enhancer (ACE) automatically adjusts backlight and contrast to the most suitable setting judging from the brightness of the screen. This setting is especially effective for dark scenes, and will increase the contrast distinction for the darker picture scenes. The ACE can be set to High, Medium, Low, or Off.

Screen Modes: You can choose from the following Screen Modes:

  • 4:3 Source:
    • Wide Zoom: Enlarges the picture to fill a 16:9 screen, preserving the original picture as much as possible.

Sony KDL-40HX800

Written By robert, Maryland on Thursday, March 31, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The HX800 shows a beautiful image, integrates well with both my home theater
and computer system as a large monitor. Yet, it doesn't rate a five because of
value and work-arounds needed to complete a high definition experience. Its
price dropped $200 a month after I bought it. While its 3-D ready, it requires
additional purchases to transmit 3-D or receive Wi-Fi. As expected, sound in
the HX800 speakers distorts and lacks bass. Attaching it to an external receiver
and speakers, completes the high definition experience. Overall, its a feature
rich unit and defintely a high quality image.

Coming from a smaller t.v., one immediately gets a different experience when
watching movies. The HX800 shows the limitations of standard defintion
broadcasts or recording. It highlights wonderful high definition sources. 40"
isn't large enough for an immersive experience, but one can definitely
notice more of what's going on in the visual story-telling.

An abundance of wired connections easily permits one to use the HX800 with
various sources (HDMI from a Sony Blu-Ray, my digital cameras and
DisplayPort outputs on my computers). The Blu-Ray audio doesn't sync exacly
with the visuals, but I by-pass that by using the audio outs to my stereo system.

In sum, I'm glad I purchased the HX800.

Sony's Sweet Spot

Written By Card, Greensboro, NC on Monday, February 07, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a beautiful set to look at, both on and off. Like most sets, it
requires adjustment before performing at its best for the environment it's in.
If your eye won't do it, then you can find proper settings on the AVS forums or
from Crutchfield itself.
The blacks are so deep that it is startling. When the screen is black it
matches the jet black bezel and in something like the opening of 60 Minutes on
CBS, where the announcers appear before a fully black background the effect is
most pronounced and pleasing. Colors are accurate and the picture is realistic
and sharp when given a good signal - even extending to less than full high-def
signals.
My set is connected to the Internet using my household WiFi connection from an
Apple Airport Extreme upstairs. This set does not have built-in WiFi reception,
but by using a local Airport Express extender and a short Ethernet cord I had it
working within a five minutes. I had previously thought of this kind of thing as
a gimmick but after using it now for several weeks I am impressed with how
useful it is and how exceedingly well it works. I have not used the 3D
capability of the set yet, but given the quality of everything else I expect it
to be well executed.
This model seems to be the sweet spot of Sony's line for now given the
price/feature combination. I am very pleased with the HX800 and think almost
anyone would be.

Very Pleased

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love our Sony TV KDL40HX800. We ordered another model but found out (thru
Crutchfield) that the one we wanted had been discontinued. They (Crutchfield)
upgraded us to the 800 series for the same price. How cool is that? Received an e-
mail that products were being shipped on a Monday (cross country) and got a call
Thursday that products would be delivered the following day...and they were! Love the
HX800 model. Ease of set up was amazing (this was a GOOD thing) Beautiful set on or
off!! Thanks Sony and especially Crutchfields!

Fantastic

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Sony has the best picture of any Sony I have bought from Eddy at Crutchfield. I was
thinking about ordering a 120 HZ model that was barely $100 less, but Eddy took the
time to explain to me that the difference between 120 HZ and 240 HZ was the same
difference as night and day. He was more than correct. This picture is unbelievably
sharp, and the black adjustments make this exceedingly clear. This is the 11th Sony
that I and my family have bought from Eddy at Crutchfield and I would never consider
going anywhere else.

Excellent picture...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent picture! Everyone who sees this TV can't believe how good the HD
picture quality and color are. I have not used the 3D capabilities yet. We have
a Pioneer Kuro HD plasma TV also, and this Sony is as good or better.

Only negative I have, and what keeps it from being five stars, is how long it
takes to power on.
It's between 10 and 15 seconds...way too long!

Sony KDL-40HX800

Written By DonA, Ephrata, PA on Saturday, November 27, 2010

I'm pleased with this TV. I was torn between the Samsung C7000 series and this. After
viewing units in local stores, I opted for the Sony because of its more natural color and
less artifacts secondary to the motion control. To my eye, the Samsung made most
programs look like a soap opera. I know you can reduce this effect by toning down the
agressiveness of the motion control but the Sony needs less attention. The screen
reflectiveness is there but not objectionable. The viewing angle is rather critical; I think the
color begins to change when you get more than 15 degrees off center. The Samsung was
a little better in this regard. I found the upconversion from 480 to 1080 better on the Sony.
The fact that the Sony could be fitted with a proper sound bar (CT-350) theater system is a
big plus. The system integrates very nicely into the mounting stand. Almost all flat panel
TVs have abysmal sound quality and an auxilary sound system is mandatory. I prefer the
more subdued flat pedastal of the Sony to the garish chrome legs of the Samsung. 3D
was not a big plus for me but after watching one BluRay 3D (Alice in Wonderland), I can
say the result is acceptable. Again, both are good TVs but I continue to believe that the
Sony was the
better choice for me.

amazing! Buying from Crutchfield was also a breeze - recommended online seller!

Sony set with deep blacks

Written By Danny, Wilmington, Ca. on Thursday, July 22, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this set for only a week, but the only down side of the TV is lack of bass in the speakers, picture is outstanding, I've own several Sony XBR's in the past, and this set has one of the best pictures I has seen, deep blacks, bright whites. Beautiful.
