The deepest and darkest of LED backlights full array with local dimming
The OptiContrast LCD panel offers outstanding picture contrast, and black levels that get really black. LED backlighting with local dimming contributes to the stellar pictures, too sections of the TV screen can lighten or darken independently of one another. You'll see subtle details in every scene, even those that most TVs struggle with, like the combination of a brightly lit sky in the background with a shadowed forest in the foreground.
Motionflow XR 960 ensures naturally smooth motion
Sony's Motionflow is one of the most sophisticated and effective motion processing solutions. It starts by analyzing the motion of specific on-screen objects as well as overall movement. Then it combines 240Hz refresh rate with a high-speed blinking backlight, achieving blur reduction that is equivalent to what you'd see with a 960Hz refresh rate. The improvement is noticeable whether you're watching video in 2D or 3D. You'll see reduced blur, enhanced image sharpness, and an overall clearer picture.
Connect to all the latest HD sources and to the Web
Four HDMI inputs let you enjoy the best possible picture from high-def sources like Blu-ray players, satellite TV receivers, and HD game consoles. Connect this Sony to your broadband Internet service and you can use the TV's remote to surf more than 25 web "channels" from the comfort of your sofa. For example, stream Netflix® straight to the biggest screen in your house, or play customized Internet radio stations from Pandora® Internet radio. Great picture Netflix via wireless works flawlessly
Pros: Looks great on or off Wireless internet
In my case, I am now able to watch All of the many networks extensive caches of reruns in beautiful HD and SD. Am enjoying going through my collection of DVDs and VHS tapes - as if I'd almost never watched them before. The set's :GUIDE" to network/station is, at least in my area and input (airways/antenna) about worthless. Lists 98% of all channels as "No Data", and three PBS channels 17.1, 17.2, 17.3 as "PBS 13.1, PBS 13.2, and PBS 13.3.". I blew it out and utilize "Broadcast Display". Cannot comment on 3D capability - dont't care if it has such capability - will never watch 3D & didn't buy it for said ability. Have its' WiFi capability enabled - wireless and slow. Also, its' proprietory USB "dongle"/antenna is about useless. Browsing the internet, if you will is most slow and cumbersome - much easier and faster to revert to your computer - what it is made for and does it much better. Stand alone sound (no amped ext speakers) is decent - ok for me anyway. I'd buy it again for what I did - its' picture.
Wait till you watch 3D movie like TRON on this TV all I can say is wow, make sure you buy the best HDMI cables. You are going to love this TV if you buy one. Great company to work with.
I've had this tv for about 3 weeks and can't get over how great the picture quality is. I have a XBR 3 that I thought was great until I seen this one. I haven't had a chance to tweak and calibrate the settings yet, but I can't complain about the settings right out of the box. I'll never use the 3D part of the tv cause I'm not into that stuff, plus I didn't buy it for that so I can't give a review on that portion of the set. The picture looks so life like it's unreal. You can see the pores on people's skin it's so clear. Once again Sony hit a home run with this tv.
A totally awesome unit. Great picture out of the box. Easy setup. From purchase to receiving easy and quick. The support folks are great, too. Thanks

OptiContrast Panel with Corning Gorilla Glass: The Sony Bravia XBR-46HX929 LED-LCD TV combines Sony's OptiContrast Panel with Corning Gorilla Glass for infinite dynamic contrast, increased brightness, and minimized unwanted light reflection - for overall better picture quality.
Intelligent Peak LED: Sony's Intelligent Peak LED Backlight uses local dimming and boost to achieve an infinite dynamic contrast ratio with the deepest blacks and brightest whites possible. Sony's Intelligent Peak LED Backlight system uses a full array, local dimming for deeper blacks, while also boosting brightness in lighter scenes creating incredible on-screen contrast. Every television picture requires contrast (the difference between dark and light areas of the screen). High contrast makes your TV picture vivid, deep and powerful. Sony achieves spectacular contrast with Intelligent Peak LED Backlight. This system places a multi-segment array of white LEDs behind the screen and varies the LED brightness according to the picture content. It shines brightly where the picture is bright, and can fall to black where the picture is black. Experience Sony's best picture quality and extraordinary contrast with this full-array, local dimming system.
X-Reality PRO Engine: The X-Reality PRO Engine is a two-chip digital video processor that optimizes high definition content, compressed HD signals, standard definition, and other sources including low resolution Internet content. Utilizing a vast database of "ideal" signal patterns developed by analyzing and indexing and enormous library of film and video, the X-Reality PRO Engine compares incoming signals pixel-by-pixel with ideal scenes to display vivid and detailed images. Additionally, the engine's multi-frame analysis helps create missing resolution and Sony's Super Bit Mapping technology incorporates 14 bit up-scaling, processing and pixel mapping to smooth gradation and improve the quality of low-tone pictures. The X-Reality PRO Engine also utilizes the following advanced picture technologies.
Note: The X-Reality Engine performs Interlace-to-Progressive (IP) conversion and upscaling as required. Film-based 24 frames-per-second content undergoes special IP conversion to reduce the "stair-step jaggies" that can form at high-contrast edges.
NTSC/ATSC/QAM Tuners: The TV is equipped with an analog NTSC tuner, a digital ATSC/8VSB tuner, and a digital QAM tuner for receiving unscrambled digital cable channels. It is not CableCARD compatible. You do not need to connect an external HDTV set-top box in order to receive High-Definition programming.
1080p Resolution: The XBR-46HX929 has a full HD native resolution of 1920 x 1080 with over 2 million pixels (more than twice the pixels of 720p HDTV). The TV's four HDMI inputs can accept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p and 1080p (60/24Hz) signals, and the component video input can accept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p (60Hz) signals. All video signals from standard definition and high definition are upconverted to 1080p.
Video Inputs: The Sony Bravia XBR-46HX929 provides High Definition (HDMI) and Standard Definition video inputs.
3D Ready: The Sony XBR-46HX929 gives you the option to enjoy 3D (three-dimensional) pictures and graphics. You can enjoy an immersive, realistic movie and gaming experience in Full HD 1080p using Sony's proprietary 3D Active Glasses, (sold separately) and connecting a compatible 3D-ready Blu-ray Disc Player, Satellite Receiver, or PlayStation3 gaming console (all sold separately) to the HDTV via HDMI. When viewed through the active shutter glasses, the on-screen image is precisely synchronized and delivered with the Full HD 1080p image intact, for an optimum 3D viewing experience. Sony's 3D technology displays high speed synchronized left- and right-eye images to deliver an immersive 3D experience. And since each frame you see is shown at Full HD resolution, the 3D action still offers razor-sharp detail. You can adjust the following 3D settings.
Note: The 3D display mode is automatically selected when a 3D signal is detected. The recommended viewing angle and distance for 3D viewing is 120° (left/right) at 3'-20'.
MotionFlow XR 960: Sony's MotionFlow XR 960 technology feature a precise backlight control that is synchronized with the liquid crystal movement from frame-to-frame creating clearer, sharper moving images. MotionFlow XR 960 combines 240 frames-per-second with the TV's advanced full-array, LED backlight system to simulate a 960 Hz effect. MotionFlow XR 960 provides smooth and precise detail during fast-action scenes for fast action movies and sports by reducing blur caused by quick camera movements, enhancing image sharpness, and overall creating a clearer picture. You can select between 4 settings - Smooth, Standard, Clear, or Clear Plus.
CineMotion: This function provides improved picture movement and reduces picture blur and graininess for film-based content. There are two settings.
24pTrue Cinema (24p Input Capability): Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sony wisely takes advantage of this by including 24p input capability via HDMI on this television producing images that are smooth and natural looking.
Infinite Dynamic Contrast Ratio: Dynamic contrast ratio compares the luminance of a 100 IRE (white) signal with that of a 0 IRE (black) signal. When the TV receives a 0 IRE signal the backlight is turned off and the luminance measurement is 0.00 cd/m2. The resulting dynamic contrast ratio is infinite.
Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE): The televisions Advance Contrast Enhancer (ACE) automatically adjusts backlight and contrast to the most suitable setting judging from the brightness of the screen. This setting is especially effective for dark scenes, and will increase the contrast distinction for the darker picture scenes. The ACE can be set to High, Medium, Low, or Off.

ARC (Audio Return Channel) Function: The Audio Return Channel in HDMI 1.4 enables the TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver or surround audio controller, increasing system flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. The ARC function enables digital output of sound using the television's HDMI In 1 port and can only be operated when the TV is connected to an audio receiver that also supports the ARC function. When the Input Source of the television is the TV (antenna), the ARC function allows audio from the TV to be heard through a connected AV receiver via the television's HDMI 1 input. The audio is sent from the TV to your receiver via a single HDMI cable without the need for a separate optical cable.
Note: When connecting a digital audio system that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC) technology, connect to HDMI IN 1 with an HDMI cable. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.
