Sony's first-generation 4K TVs wowed skeptics and demonstrated how riveting this hyper-detailed viewing experience could be. The 49" XBR-49X850B is the smallest member of their latest generation of 4K sets. It's the perfect choice for movie fans with smaller living rooms or family rooms. Actually, this is one of the very few Ultra HD sets compact enough to make sense in a bedroom.
One of the key advantages of these 2014 models over last year's Ultra HD TVs is their ability to play the streamed 4K content available from Netflix® and Amazon Instant Video. Picture quality is, in a word, amazing. This set delivers the accurate, unhyped images we expect from Sony's premium XBR technology, along with the spectacular detail we expect from Ultra HD TV.
Ultra HD will enhance the quality of everything you watch, with a screen that has four times the resolution of a regular "full HD" 1080p TV. Sony teams this 4K screen technology with their TRILUMINOS LED backlighting, which provides more depth and shades of color than you've probably ever seen before.
To enjoy the highest-quality 4K viewing experience at home, connect this TV to Sony's FMP-X10 4K Ultra HD media player, which lets you access a library of full-length 4K Ultra HD feature films and TV shows from your living room. You can download titles from Sony's Video Unlimited 4K Store and load them on the FMP-X10's built-in hard drive.
The XBR-49X850B's screen contains over 8 million pixels (3,840 x 2,160) — the higher pixel density is easily visible. Equally important to the overall viewing experience is Sony's 4K expertise, which extends from "lens to living room." They build professional 4K cameras and cinema projectors, and Sony Pictures has a bigger catalog of 4K films than any other studio. This end-to-end approach helps ensure that XBR owners can have a truly theater-like experience at home.
True 4K content will be scarce for a while, but that shouldn't keep you from considering this TV. Based on ten years' experience upscaling movies to 4K in over 15,000 theaters worldwide, Sony has developed a processor so advanced it can upscale HD content to near-4K quality. This 4K X-Reality™ Pro chip enhances picture quality by analyzing and correcting images, resulting in impressively natural detail and color. You'll see the benefits of X-Reality Pro on everything from Blu-ray discs to Netflix® movies to video clips from your smartphone. X-Reality Pro enhances detail and reduces video noise by drawing on a database of real patterns, shapes and textures to display a startlingly lifelike picture. You also get Sony's Motionflow™ XR 240 blur reduction, which maintains clear motion even with fast-action content.
The XBR-49X850B has built-in Wi-Fi® so you can stream a variety of HD entertainment straight from the web. You can access an endless selection of entertainment at the Sony Entertainment Network, where thousands of movies, TV shows, videos, games and music are always at your fingertips. And connect to even more movies, music and apps by wirelessly mirroring what's on your compatible Android™ smartphone.
This TV comes with not one but two remotes. The new "One-flick" touchpad has several advances over the typical button-style remote. First, it operates via Bluetooth instead of IR, so it's less finicky as far as needing to be precisely aimed at the TV's remote sensor. And the touchpad makes screen navigation and switching between apps quick and easy. The other remote is a standard IR clicker.
Movie theaters have switched to 4K projectors in recent years, and now you can enjoy amazing 4K picture quality at home. Ultra HD TVs with 4K resolution offer four times the detail of 1080p HDTVs. Some major TV makers offer media players so you can download and watch true 4K content for the best possible picture. Netflix® is already streaming some of their content in 4K, and other services plan to offer 4K video later this year.
I was looking for a not too big passive-3D TV. They are very hard to find. In 2014 LG made this panel for the LG and Sony TV. Having just had a 1080P 3D TV (sony) that had been broken, I wanted to replace it. I first tried the LG; the one I had was defective - the 2D was awesome, the 3D was impossible to align and watch with no artifacts. So I had returned it. The Sony, same panel, is sort of hard to compare. The sound is better. The 2D is not as fast to upcast to 4K, sometimes there are some line-artifacts as a fast image is up-scaled. 3D Blue Ray movies are very good. Color and sharpness are good. 2D to 3D upcasting is not quite as good as the 1080P TV (or the parts of the LG that were clear) but it's better than nothing. Unfortunately Sony no longer makes passive 3D TV's or any 2D to 3D upcasting and their active 3D is terrible.
Pros: Not too expensive for 4K 3D TV, good sound, decent 4K picture. 2015 and newer TV's probably upscale a bit smoother but overall happy with the picture. And I still can upcast my 2D shows to 3D. As of 2015 the smallest flat LG for this is 65" which is too big for my house!
Cons: A few artifacts of the 4K scaling, no depth control on the 2D to 3D upcasting so the 3D effect of that is not as good as the 1080P TV.
Fantastic picture. My wife, who is not an aficionado of TV sets said, "Whoa," when she first saw the picture. Upgrades Blu-ray for great pictures. I hooked the HDMI cables directly to the set for the best pictures. A little disappointed that DTS and SACD sound is not passed, but Dolby and DVD audio are.
Pros: Fantastic picture. Passes surround audio through optical output to tuner. See above comments for exceptions.
Cons: Some glare from lights in the room, more so than with my older Sony hi-def TV. With some light movement it is acceptable. Easy set-up, but a little confusion when putting on the legs.
Shipping was fast as always. Awesome television.
Pros: Set up was easy. Picture quality is excellent. Right size for the bedroom.
Great TV. Have it Connected to DIRECTV and NETFLIX. All connections are Hard Wired. Very surprised with Excellent Picture from NETFLIX. First time using the Internet. Time Warner @ 6.5 GB DIRECTV has always been Good
Pros: It Does Up Scale HD Pictures. Definitely Notice an improvement.
Cons: Remote is Cheap. Buttons are Small, Not Back-Lit, and Unit is too Small. Have had SONY TV's since they first came out. This Remote is a Disappointment. Also. Never got a TV before with-OUT a Manual. Trying to read the On-Line version is NOT Fun. Wish they offered a Paper Manual. Still trying to figure if the Camera is watching me? If I disable the Flashing Green Light at the Bottom of the screen, a Warning come on and says the Camera is still on ???
Delivered quickly, easy to install relatively easy to setup
Pros: Setup instructions easy to foils, great picture
Cons: None found yet
Great TV. Unit replaced a 36" Toshiba CRT when we couldn't read the sports scores in the corner anymore. HiDef is just what we needed. Picture is clear even without HD service from the cable company. Set has lots of capability we haven't accessed yet. Have to be careful with the remote control that you don't activate some function that you didn't intend to. On board manual works well. I've been able to work out any 'problems' I've encountered. Great picture and color right out of the box. It even makes my old VHS railroad tapes look good. Sound is better than I expected, having heard about small speakers in limited space. Built in WiFi and internet access yet to exploited, but it's there when I'm ready for it. I really haven't scratched the surface of what it can do. Very happy. I'm glad it's a SONY.
Pros: Great picture and lots of capability.
Cons: Took awhile to get the correct settings to work with my cable company.
Picture is fantastic. My father has a 55 inch Samsung. The picture on the Sony is significantly better. The initials relatively easy. But the menus are a little confusing. Really explored this martini functionality, It's not what I want to TV for. Wish I could get the Sony remote, to work my table functionalities.
Picture is crystal clear. Printed manuals not much help in setting up, but electronic onscreen manual does help. Sound is more acceptable than I thought it would be. If you need or want more, it is easy to add additional speakers, etc.
Pros: Picture, price, flexibility, good picture size for small living space.
Cons: Printed materials not very helpful. Need four hands to take the tv out of the box and to set up. Helps if one person has experience in working with Sony.
We have a smaller, but very nice condo in Cambridge, Massachusetts. We enjoy sharing our home with friends and colleagues. After looking at a number of flat screen TVs and doing our research about size, distance to viewer, sound and resolution, we decided on the Sony 4K. The folks at Crutchfield helped us to understand the best mixi of options for us. Other electronics shops and stores did not have the depth of knowledge and orientation to service our questions about the purchase. As we put our new media center together, with receiver, TV and speakers, we were pleased at the ease of self installation. The remarkable sound from the TV, the clarity of the picture were exactly as we wanted. The on-screen set-up guide and explanations that come with the TV were easy to understand for the average homeowner. We were able to watch one of our favorite DVDs in a very short time. When we contacted our cable provider, the set up of the cable was easy. We can now view cable, DVDs, programs from our computers and on line service. We are pleased with our purchase of the Sony TV...We can recommend the set and size for any condo owner.
Pros: Size just right for a condo owner. Clarity is excelent Sound is great, the new speaker system that we have installed is awesome Set up was easy
Cons: It took a little bit to underwent the new technology, but with reading the owner's manuals, the on screen help, and one quick call to Crutchfield to point us in the right direction, really didn't take more time than we had thought we could handle doing the installation ourselves.
I own the 55 inch. And the 49 inch for my bedroom ,I think this is one of the best Tv's on the market easy setup, if you use other Sony products they link in a snap. I also use harmony remotes for easy tuning, I have bought them all from Crutchfield I have had great service from them. Give them a try, Sony and Crutchfield.
Pros: Everything is a pro in my way of looking products and service.
My best decision yet...As a prior Samsung user I can say the new Sony is superior in every way. Took me only about 30 minutes to unbox and set up. The real meat and potatoes came when I plugged to an outlet...Fantastic picture in HD and super sharp with Netflix streaming 4k. The colors were bright and vibrant, blacks were very acceptable. The Sony passive 3D was as good as my Samsung 3D with active glasses. Overall, I love the TV and feel like my choice was the right one after 3 weeks of reviewing all available TVs.......Very Happy Customer
Pros: Color, clarity and 4k performance were beyond expectations.
Cons: None as of yet
We chose the 49 inch Sony Ultra 4k 3D model since it was perfect for our family room layout and still offer all the features of it's 55 inch brother. The 3D is is crisp and the included apps provide a wide selection of free and subscription services. We have streamed a few 4k content and the upscaled BluRay DVDs didn't disappoint.
Pros: Easy set up and outstanding picture. The passive 3D is equal to our active 3D Sony 55 inch XBR.
Cons: Haven't found any as yet
Easy to use. Excellent color and definition. Paired with a Bose Sound System, it is the bee's knees
I decided to try the Samsung UN50HU6950 as well as the LG 49UB8500 and eventually bought this Sony 49x850B. The Samsung was a great tv, except that it regularly crashed while using netflix. Not only did it crash the app, it crashed the whole TV, taking 30 seconds to come back on. Absolutely obnoxious. The LG tv worked well but was very simplistic with little that a user could adjust and it is completely devoid of a built in tv guide, something that both the Samsung and Sony have. The tv guide program on this Sony tv is amazing. You get your usual information about the show and episode, but then can link to get cast information, similar shows and a great deal more data. This Sony tv is absolutely fantastic in almost every way. Connected to an antenna, this tv performs better than either the Samsung or LG in terms of reception. The dual remotes leave very little to be desired. In fact the larger remote even has controls for play, pause, etc to control internet, netflix and hulu type content.. Picture quality is amazing, including the upconvert of 480i picture images. The options to tweak the picture seem to go on forever and there are a number that can be set to auto, which often seems to provide the best picture. The TV also includes a 3D mode which is nothing too spectacular on regular television though It does make hockey games look a little better. I have not been able to test it with something actually created originally in 3D. Color & contrast are both fantastic
Pros: The tv guide program is amazing. You get your usual information about the show and episode, but then can link to get cast information, similar shows and a great deal more, including related/similar programs and tons of online video specific to whatever you're wtaching. Picture quality is amazing, including the upconvert of 480i picture images. The options to tweak the picture seem to go on forever and there are a number that can be set to auto. Antenna tuner is spectacular.
Cons: The only con to this tv is that it takes approximately 15 seconds to power up such that you could use the internet or switch inputs. This may or may not impact you. If you're running it off of cable it wouldn't likely matter as much.
Tv has a great picture. Sound is average. Very user friendly. Love the remote.
It was time to replace my 50" sony sxrd liquid crystal hdtv. It was a great tv(still is) but with the newer technology I felt I was missing out on amazing picture quality. It was black Friday and there was a 4K Samsung on sale so I thought why not. I've never been pleased with samsung products but with all the great reviews I figured they stepped up their game. The picture at 4K was very good but the motion blur and image breakup drove me crazy. The audio not syncing to the person talking mouth put me over the edge so I returned it. I got a higher quality 1080P sony and it was great but not that 4K kind of great. I replaced that with this one. The 850 4K blows the rest out of the water. 4K Netflix is great but they need more content. Bluray is flat out AMAZING and once you have it fine tuned it's hard to beat. It has a webcam on top of the screen for Skype and it can fold back behind if not using it. The 3D is great as well. Nothing close to the crap in movie theaters. I've been through at least 10 HDTV's and this is the best. Sony Bravias have always produced. No motion blur(120Hz) or pixelization problems. The sound matches the moving mouths also. I'm very happy with this entry level 4K HDTV. Don't think there's a better entry level period.
Pros: Picture. All the things you don't notice that lesser tv's can't produce. No motion blur. No pixel breakup. Many different settings. 4K streaming. 3D. Wi-Fi. Smart tv. Its great.
Cons: Don't really have any. I do wish there was more 4K content but time will solve that problem.
For an LCD TV I suppose this is as good as they get, however my 15 year old Panasonic Plasma has a far more beautiful picture, and the contrast ratio is far superior blacks are truly black
Pros: 4k support, HDMI Support,
Cons: Built in Media player is picky about file types, it often crashes the TV, requiring one to have to unplug the TV to reboot it. Plex App for this TV is very unstable, I was hoping I could eliminate the need of my ROKU by using this smart TV, however the ROKU is far more stable than using the native TV apps. the contrast ratio is not as good as on a plasma, blacks are not true black, also picture alters on viewing angle, this TV is best viewed straight on. The screen is plastic not glass
I upgraded from a 32" TV that was seven years old so this was a major change and so far it's great. Picture is amazing and the 4K upscaling is great although it took a few days to get used to it. Full 4K content on Netflix (what little there is) looks great, maybe it's just me but the 2D content has so much clarity and depth it almost seems 3D. The 2D to 3D conversion for television content is a nice extra when it's available, it seems to be rather scant though. Setup was very easy and it seems to get along with my Denon receiver very well, there were a few glitches at setup but once I was done and turned everything off and then on again it worked fine. I can't comment on the WiFi feature as I have it wired into my home network (unrelated sidenote: buying a router for behind my home theatre setup so my TV, Blu-Ray Player, receiver, and Apple TV don't have to rely on WiFi was some of the best money I ever spent). I know this only applies if you're local (I live 30 miles from Charlottesville) but the delivery was great, very small arrival window, pulled up right on time and even called when they were ten minutes away. I was able to duck out of work and be back before anyone noticed.
Pros: Great picture, thin bezel, very intuitive remotes. I prefer the traditional one mainly for the dedicated Netflix button, it streamlines the whole process.
Cons: This is very minor, but you might have to adjust light placement or turn them off depending on where they are in the room, the glossy screen is highly reflective.
Great Picture. Uses passive 3D. Don't know what that means but you don't have to plug the glasses into a charger. Just put them on. Love the 3D.
Pros: Great Picture. WiFi works as well as any of my other toys. Leap Frog (wireless transmission from my cable box to tv) into a video input works better than with my previous TV.
Cons: No audio output. Would like to have connected audio output to a stereo. Spent around an hour trying to attach legs to set. Found out later that there are different screws to be used if you use the center position for the legs. But as long as Newton and Einstein provide me with gravity there is no problem.
Bought this set to replace a 5year old Sony 37 inch XBR. Can't believe the difference in the picture quality in that short of a time! It is spectacular! It was quite easy to set up right out of the box and has easy to use functions and I am not a technophile by any means. 4K up scaling is terrific! Apps are not the greatest, but so far, I can't find anything that would prevent me from recommending the product.
Pros: Great picture and 4K up scaling. Easy to set up and use.
Cons: Significant glare from screen when room is well lit(not sure if it would be any different with another LCD). Limited apps menu.
Easy to set up and configure. This replaced a Sony Bravia HD that I bought about 5 years ago from Crutchfield and the difference is profound. The resolution and color are just incredible. You have to learn to watch tv all over again!! Sony was offering a generous rebate, and shipping was free. Crutchfield support is quite competent and helpful.
Pros: Easy set up and just an incredible picture. It makes watching television and experience.
Cons: You will need to buy an HDMI cable that supports ultra HD.
Great 4K TV, works great with the 5800 receiver and 6200 DVD player
Pros: resolution and color clarity
Great picture with upscaling. Awesome with 4K media. I am ready for the future. Easy to set up.
Pros: Picture quality
Cons: Set up material was minimal. Could use more pictures.
Bought this set to fit in a space over a fireplace with 43 1/4 horizontal clearance. It just fits. Fed by a Dish Hopper and outputs to a Samsung Home Theatre. Everything works great. I will be reading manual to fine tune, but showed my grand kids Spiderman and the details in the dark area were fantastic.
Pros: Great picture quality, easy set up, large picture size for a set of this overall dimension
Cons: None so far
I purchased, received and installed before Christmas Eve. This unit replaces a 14 year old Sony unit for which I was very pleased. The picture quality and features of this unit is fantastic. I have been very satisfied with this and many previous purchases from Crutchfield.
Pros: Picture quality and features. Easy installation and start-up.
Cons: None at this time.
I reviewed several tv's on line while looking for an upgrade over my 40 inch Sony. I settled on this one due to my familiarity with Sony's and the positive reviews and info I found on-line. The tv came well packed in a nice box with no issues. Set up and installation was easy even thought I was trying to wall mount it late at night during nights right before Christmas as a surprise for my children for Christmas. Initial set up was very easy and intuitive and there is an I-Manual that is easily found during set up. The TV does come with two different remotes as well. All in all I have no complaints with the TV and am very impressed with the picture quality. I haven't tried anything in 4K yet and have not tried anything with the included 3D glasses. Honestly with my kids loving it as much as they do I havent had a lot of time to sit and check out a lot of the functions and settings.
Pros: Easy set up Great Picture Side mounts for HDMI if wall mounting Sound is better than I expected.
Cons: The only con I can find at this point is the fact that the TV was advertised for 1299 on sale right up to the day before I ordered it and then Sony bumped the price up $200 right before Christmas, only to drop the price right after Christmas. My fault for not ordering it at the lower price, My only bad feeling about the TV is knowing that I could have had it $200 less.
Just a super Natural picture. Not the cartoony looking picture on so many 4K and LED TV's. Love it.
Pros: All is good.
Cons: None is bad
it displays crisp colors, light weight and the right size screen. it is good for small to medium size living rooms. i highly recommend it.
I love it! I first saw the 4K over a year ago and was totally amazed at its brillaince. The picture quality is crystal clear and the colors are so vibrant. When you are watching the TV you instanlly feel you are transported to the actual location. It is hands down the best TV. I treated myself and I am so glad I did!
Pros: Everything i want in a TV.
Cons: I havent' found any, though I am still learning how to operate it.
Best TV we have purchased. We have 60" Panasonic plasma that I thought had best picture. The Sony 4 - K picture surpasses it and is a clear step up from another Sony HD set we have. Looked at Samsung and felt Sony's picture was better than either the flat or curved and now that it is in house absolutely convinced best set. Crutchfield were informative and very helpful.
Pros: Outstanding picture. Easy to set up. From time we opened the box, we had it connected to the audio, satellite, and home internet systems in the room it is located in one hour.
Cons: One issue I point to is the stand. It can be an issue depending on the width and length of what is sitting on. No issue if wall mounted.
Lifetime Sony XBR TV owner and this next gen model does not disappoint. Sony still makes the best remote and interface (UI's) compared to any of the other brands and now that they've gotten into 4k and the thin bezel designs that Samsung made the target to achieve this TV is perfect. Resolution is fantastic and the upscaling with online media is impressive- do not overlook 24fps media mode for great cinema viewing. For such a slimmed down design, the sound quality also works well for regular viewing.
Pros: Slim bezel and best lifelike, perfect (dialed-in) picture I've seen on Sony XBR TV's.
Cons: I am not complaining with the price.
Purchased this TV as a gift for my parents. Its beautiful. We purchased a Samsung 4k last year for us, and I always wished I had purchased the Sony instead. The Samsung is nice, I just like the picture in the Sony a bit better. I think the tones are richer and not as bright, but more true to color. You can't go wrong with this TV! And as always fantastic service from Crutchfield to go with a beautiful TV!
We only buy Sony's and this is why...BEAUTIFUL TV, fantastic picture. We highly recommend this television.
Pros: Very light weight. Great picture. Easy install.
This TV was recommended by Crutchfield using their email request. I had the list narrowed down to this model and a samsung. I did not tell Crutchfield anything about what I had decided and sent the request. They came back with this model. I ordered it. I am very happy with it, easy set up. the second remote is great to use once you get use to it. It comes with an IR blaster so you can set it up to run your cable box or other devices. I have a very big room with lots of light. There is some reflection from the tv which I hope the sanus mounting bracket can eliminate with some viewing angle adjustment. The side viewing angle is very good. Overall I think the samsung or the sony would have been a good choice but am happy with this one. 4k is amazing....The price for this unit is very reasonable. could not justify the price of oled.
Pros: easy set up. nice stand for mounting on cabinet. nice small remote plus standard second one.
Cons: Some reflections with rooms with a lot of light and windows. Not sure this could be corrected with any LED?? I have a panasonic 55"GT plasma in my man cave and wish they still made these sets. oh well..... plasma would not have worked in this room either.
Couldn't be happier with my TV.
Pros: Great picture. Easy setup.
Beautiful picture! Easy setup. Typical Song quality. Typical Crutchfield great service.
Cons: Remote sensor might be blocked by your center speaker.
First TV arrived with a broken screen. Crutchfield provided replacement promptly. Just hooked the replacement TV up. The picture is excellent...but that is using standard HD programming and without any fiddling with the picture settings. I've not yet hooked up the Blu-Ray and A/V receiver because apparently I need "high speed" or version 2.0 HDMI cables. Debating purchasing a new blu-ray which converts to UHD as well. Will post another review and/or update once I experiment with the picture settings and get the blu-ray and streaming netflix sorted out. Suspect once i do all that and get to see what this TV will really do - my rating will improve to 5 stars.
Pros: - easy set up - excellent picture - viewing off center is very good - TV and stands look good
Cons: - nothing yet
Picture quality out of the box is excellent especially with blu ray player, I have not made any adjustments with the TV yet this is all new. Use only HDMI thats where you will see the difference.
Pros: Picture clarity is awesome
Cons: Sound quality better with surround system.
Well packed, straight forward setup, and wow, what a picture. My wife now refuses to watch my old 60 inch rear projection Sony because of the extra sharpness and detail in this set. Good chance that circumstance will wind up costing some more big bucks! Crutchfield, I'll be back.
Pros: Fine product -- Sony is still in the hunt.
Cons: Can't seem to find any other than the investment amount
The TV arrived in a well designed box which made unpacking easy. The mounting provisions and connections made it possible to re-use my original support arm mount. The startup and setup was easy and painless. The picture quality is great. The controls are straight forward and fairly intuitive.
Pros: Great picture. Easy to get up and running.
Cons: None at this time.
This tv replaces an older sony LCD (which had a great picture...I thought) This tv knocks the older ones socks off! The contrast is the biggest improvement. There are many more noticeable variations in the blacks and grays. The color is also amazing. Much more vibrant and bright vs the old sony. Most HD cable channels look great much smoother and more life like. When watching Sportcenter I feel like I am sitting at the desk across from the hosts. I almost bought the Samsung 4k but after calling Crutchfield and speaking with an advisor, for the type of viewing I do it seemed the Sony was the better choice. I don't use the 3D feature, and I have used the smart feature only a few times and it was easy to figure out. I prefer using the smaller touch pad remote for navigating through the menus. I have viewed some youtube 4k videos and the picture gets even better. There is more detail and the colors seem to become more vibrant and bright.
Pros: Great picture, Excellent contrast, Very natural colors right out of the box, Buying from Crutchfield.
Cons: My wife complains about the sound vs the old sony which had front firing speakers. I find the sound to be OK it just needs to be turned up higher then the old one.
Quality of the images--definition, clarity, and fidelity of color--is beyond anything I have seen before. And that's before I've seen and 4K images; hard to imagine that they will be better.
Pros: Easy to set up. Superiority of images. Help from Crutchfield tech reps.
Cons: Navigation of all the various features can be somewhat intimidating at first. Construction of the remotes seems flimsy. (And why two remotes, conventional and trackpad type?)
I am impressed. Even without a lot of 4K content readily available, the up-scaling of 1080p is impressive. Anything less than 1080, should be avoided though. The 3D is also very impressive, which surprised me with the passive glasses. the 3D glasses are easily worn over prescription eye-wear. The only dislike is the TV's operating system, Opera. Opera can be slow, and unresponsive at times.
Pros: Lots of pro's
Cons: Opera operating system
The set was easy to set up and the picture quality is fantastic even though I have yet to play anything with 4k resolution it up converts my 1080i to a higher resolution. As usual I had another great experience dealing with the people at Crutchfield.

4K X-Reality Pro Engine: Sony's new 4K X-Reality Pro Engine enhances Ultra-HD, HD, and SD images by analyzing and refining images with beautifully natural detail and astounding color. This 4K television upscales your favorite TV shows, DVDs and Blu-ray movies, even video-on-demand content, and smartphone videos to Ultra-HD quality. The 4K X-Reality Pro Engine breathes new life into everything you see with phenomenal 4K (3,840 x 2,160) resolution.
Dynamic Edge LED Backlighting w/ Local Dimming: Dynamic Edge LED backlighting with local dimming delivers pitch-black night scenes and illuminates bright scenes that pop with vibrant color. Rather than illuminating the entire screen, contrast is boosted in just the right areas for a more realistic picture.
TRILUMINOS Display Technology: Unique to Sony, TRILUMINOS Display technology creates incredibly true, natural shades of colors; just the way you want them. Hard-to-reproduce reds, aqua blues, and emerald greens are displayed beautifully, so landscapes and seascapes look more vivid. Faces look better, too, with natural skin tones. It's all thanks to a new TRILUMINOS display that gives images a heightened sense of depth.
MotionFlow XR 240 Technology: Sony's MotionFlow XR 240 technology feature a precise backlight control that is synchronized with the liquid crystal movement from frame-to-frame creating clearer, sharper moving images. MotionFlow XR 240 combines 120 frames-per-second with the TV's advanced LED backlight system to simulate a 240 Hz effect. MotionFlow XR 240 provides smooth and precise detail during fast-action scenes for fast action movies and sports by reducing blur caused by quick camera movements, enhancing image sharpness, and overall creating a clearer picture. You can select between various settings.
Automatic Intelligence: The TV's built-in Light Sensor automatically adjusts the picture brightness based on the amount of light in the room. As a result, you can enjoy automatic customized picture brightness and save energy without lifting a finger. The televisions Advance Contrast Enhancer (ACE) automatically adjusts backlight and contrast to the most suitable setting judging from the brightness of the screen. This setting is especially effective for dark scenes, and will increase the contrast distinction for the darker picture scenes. The ACE can be set to High, Medium, Low, or Off.

Note: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners with an RF-coaxial input, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.
24pTrue Cinema (24p Input Capability): Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sony wisely takes advantage of this by including 24p input capability via HDMI on this television producing images that are smooth and natural looking.
MHL Compatible: The HDMI 2 and 4 input are designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the TV's HDMI 2 or 4 (MHL) input using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on the Sony TV from your mobile smartphone. The TV's IR remote can be used to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Stop, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Menu navigation). Passive 3D Technology (w/ glasses): The Sony XBR-X850B series LED-LCD TV uses the same Passive 3D technology used to power 3D films in today's movie theaters. The Sony LED-LCD TV creates stereoscopic three-dimensional images using polarized glasses (2 pair included), making it ideal for 3D movies and games. This passive 3D technology offers wider viewing angles, no "flicker-effect", and less eye strain.

Based on the original signal source, you may see black bars around the picture or just on the both sides of the screen. Sometimes you will see the picture fill the full screen.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel in the television's HDMI 1 input enables the TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input. The audio from the TV's tuner, network connection, and USB input can pass as Dolby Digital or 2ch PCM. HDMI and analog connected devices will be output as 2ch PCM only.
Note: Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an A/V receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI IN 1 port. Francis, I would help you if I could. I don't use the TV for this purpose. I know that there is a "on screen" built in tutorial program in the TV that SHOULD help you with these features. [ BETHANN Jan 13, 2015 ]
Sorry I can't answer your questions at this time. I only really got it out of the box on Saturday. [ JOEL Jan 12, 2015 ]
Sorry Francis, I haven't tried to browse the Internet on my TV, and I use a Logitech universal remote for the TV and all attached equipment. [ David Jan 12, 2015 ]
It's true, 4k content is lacking (now), but I purchased this TV to future-proof my TV investment. [ STEVEN Dec 22, 2014 ]
I have viewed Netflix 4K programs. I do not see much if any difference compared to the HD programs from Direct TV. The picture on this TV is incredible. I have a Samsung and another Sony both HD TV's and the picture and sound on this 4K is much better. I cannot compare it to the current models that are not 4K but I suspect it does make a difference. If you view a 4K TV next to an HD at a show room that has the same media running on both you can see the difference. [ Neil Dec 15, 2014 ]
I have an HD receiver with this TV but not all of the channels are even 1080p. Upscaled SD content does not appear to look any better or worse than my older non-4k Sony HDTV. Even if you don't have an HD service plan from your cable or satellite provider you can still get 4k content from Netflix and now Amazon Prime with this TV (although a high speed internet connection is required). [ Philip Dec 14, 2014 ]
I am very happy that I purchased the TV. It can do many things. I asked my husband and son what they thought of your question and they responded if you know in the future you are going to get HD it is definitely worth it. [ Liz Dec 14, 2014 ]
Probably not. You really need to watch in HD...and preferably in UHD. I bought a DVD player that upconverts movies to UHD...and that provides a pretty awesome picture [ Tim Dec 14, 2014 ]
Tough call, I've never seen what it looks like without HD service. The picture still looks good on the standard Chanel's, but isn't everything broadcasted in HD? If you have a Blu-Ray player or streaming Netflix it's worth it. I believe Netflix streams in 4K, and even if you have a Bly-Ray without 4K up scaling , the picture is incredibly sharp & clear. We love the 4K TV! I hope this helps! [ MELISSA Dec 14, 2014 ]
Steve, Don't bother with a 4k tv unless you have HD programming. You will be disappointed. [ THOMAS J. Dec 14, 2014 ]
No. [ THOMAS Dec 14, 2014 ]
probably not. THe only 4k content available for this tv is mainly streaming thru netflix or purchasing a 4k player (expensive). The reason why I purchased this tv and not just a 1080 LED/lcd was that Samsung and Sony save their best drivers and have the best picture on these 4k units. The price of this unit had come down quite a bit so it made it possible. The reason I went with sony was they are driving the 4k revolution (like bluray). they have the best upconversion processing per the reviews. You could purchase a decent led for about half the cost. If your a gamer you definitely want samsung. I wanted to have a good movie picture with great side angle viewing which this set has. I really like the picture of the OLED but still very $$$$$. good luck try the cnet reviews. There are alot of good tv pics out there. [ JOHN C Dec 14, 2014 ]
I do believe the 4K TV is worth it. The TV will upscale any 1080 source such as bluray to 4K. It's not perfect, but it eliminates the graininess, especially if you are sitting close to the TV (not so with a 720 source). Also, there is a continually increasing amount online 4K sources, but it does require a FAST internet speed. [ William Dec 14, 2014 ]
