Sony's first-generation 4K TVs wowed skeptics and demonstrated how riveting this hyper-detailed viewing experience could be. The 55" XBR-55X850B is part of their latest generation of 4K sets.
This model is much sleeker and slimmer, and a lot more affordable. Its most important upgrade is the ability to play the streamed 4K content available from Netflix® and Amazon Instant Video. Picture quality is, in a word, amazing. This set delivers the accurate, unhyped images we expect from Sony's premium XBR technology, along with the spectacular detail we expect from Ultra HD TV.
Ultra HD will enhance the quality of everything you watch, with a screen that has four times the resolution of a regular "full HD" 1080p TV. Sony teams this 4K screen technology with their TRILUMINOS LED backlighting, which provides more depth and shades of color than you've probably ever seen before.
Sony's FMP-X10 Ultra HD media player.
To enjoy the highest-quality 4K viewing experience at home, connect this TV to Sony's FMP-X10 4K Ultra HD media player, which lets you access a library of full-length 4K Ultra HD feature films and TV shows from your living room. You can download titles from Sony's Video Unlimited 4K Store and load them on the FMP-X10's built-in hard drive.
The XBR-55X850B's screen contains over 8 million pixels (3,840 x 2,160) — the higher pixel density is easily visible. Equally important to the overall viewing experience is Sony's 4K expertise, which extends from "lens to living room." They build professional 4K cameras and cinema projectors, and Sony Pictures has a bigger catalog of 4K films than any other studio. This end-to-end approach helps ensure that XBR owners can have a truly theater-like experience at home.
True 4K content will be scarce for a while, but that shouldn't keep you from considering this TV. Based on ten years' experience upscaling movies to 4K in over 15,000 theaters worldwide, Sony has developed a processor so advanced it can upscale HD content to near-4K quality. This 4K X-Reality™ Pro chip enhances picture quality by analyzing and correcting images, resulting in impressively natural detail and color. You'll see the benefits of X-Reality Pro on everything from Blu-ray discs to Netflix® movies to video clips from your smartphone. X-Reality Pro enhances detail and reduces video noise by drawing on a database of real patterns, shapes and textures to display a startlingly lifelike picture. You also get Sony's Motionflow™ XR 240 blur reduction, which maintains clear motion even with fast-action content.
The XBR-55X850B has built-in Wi-Fi® so you can stream a variety of HD entertainment straight from the web. You can access an endless selection of entertainment at the Sony Entertainment Network, where thousands of movies, TV shows, videos, games and music are always at your fingertips. And connect to even more movies, music and apps by wirelessly mirroring what's on your compatible Android™ smartphone.
This TV comes with not one but two remotes. The new "One-flick" touchpad has several advances over the typical button-style remote. First, it operates via Bluetooth instead of IR, so it's less finicky as far as needing to be precisely aimed at the TV's remote sensor. And the touchpad makes screen navigation and switching between apps quick and easy. The other remote is a standard IR clicker.
Movie theaters have switched to 4K projectors in recent years, and now you can enjoy amazing 4K picture quality at home. Ultra HD TVs with 4K resolution offer four times the detail of 1080p HDTVs. Some major TV makers offer media players so you can download and watch true 4K content for the best possible picture. Netflix® is already streaming some of their content in 4K, and other services plan to offer 4K video later this year.
I've been waiting for this TV for a while now. A 4K LED that does passive 3D and boy was it worth the wait!
What a fantastic picture and love the Smart TV functions.
One draw back is that there is only optical digital output; no RCA audio output so I'll need to figure out a new audio option. Would have been great if both were included.
excellent picture but tv has blurring problem with motion. called Crutchfield and they told me to turn all the setting off then turn one on at a time. no real solution but tried it and it did not work. Went to local tv dealer and they told me to go into picture & display then into picture adjustments and turn off smooth gradation and it helped a good bit. Still little blurring but much better. All in all a good set when bugs knocked out of it.
Pros: excellent pic very clean and sharp.
Cons: motion problem. when I received set it felt like very bad panning job and made me dizzy. Was not impressed by tech support.
Crutchfield handled my in a very professional manner. Great communication, expert advise and product arrived sooner than expected. I did very little as far as adjusting the picture settings. Out of the box it looked great. Connection to my wireless was very easy, Netflix and amazon prime was a piece of cake to connect. There are a lot of apps that I thought were useless but the nice thing is you can put the apps you do like in your favorites so you dont have to go through tons of apps to find the ones you like. The touch-pad remote takes a while to get use to but after a few days using it you get the hang of it.. Kind of like using a mouse for the first time. I was torn between the Samsung (4k model in this size 8550) or the sony because my room is a bit dark. I watch my neighbors Samsung and the colors to me look too artificial. It took a while for him to adjust the samsung to get the colors just right. I ordered this sony and for me it was the right choice. Colors look good, 3D is excellent, and everything connected perfect. I have verizon Fios and can use my Verizon remote with this TV. Build quality is excellent and reflections are not even noticeable. I would say the only downside to the TV is the instruction book. Having sony products in the past I knew the book would be useless. I would recommend this TV
Pros: 3D, Picture Quality, Build quality
Cons: instruction book
As with any Sony product, this is a great TV. I couldn't be happier with our choice to purchase this model.
Pros: There are too many to list, but I really appreciate the many features of the TV and think the legs versus the typical pedestal make this model much more aesthetic.
Cons: I haven't found one yet.
Amazing picture in 4K and upscaling Std. HD.
I'm pretty cheap so if it weren't for my significant other being in the showroom with me I wouldn't even have considered a TV this expensive, even after the rebate. It has more inches and pixels than I thought I wanted or needed but the salesman successfully demonstrated that this TV is worth it. And it is.
Pros: picture, appearance
Cons: didn't win it in a contest give-a-way
I purchased Sony to replace my console of over 25 years. I went with Sony after comparing the picture quality with other brands of the same size. As I could see when doing this Sony blows the other brands of the water.
Pros: This TV has a very clear picture down to a strain of hair. I believe I will enjoy this TV many features.
Cons: The frame should had been polish. It is a little more pricier then other brands.
Sony is the best. I've been loyal since their tube-base XBR and this 4K tele is yet another benchmark.
The PROs: Standard Blu-Ray player (non 4K) when showing Disney films such as 'Frozen' or 'Wreck it Ralph' is absolutely stunning. Crispness in color and detail. The user interface for Netflix and other channels is first class, visually pleasing and easy to navigate.
The CONs: I'd give 4 1/2 stars overall but it won't allow me, so I will have to deduct a point for the lack of 4K camerawork on ESPN and other major sports channels. Saturday and Sunday football is enjoyable on this set, but there is noticeable chunkiness in the players when cameras are set bird's eye view. On close up shots, it does have 4K-like detail in the players and overall action. Once the broadcasters get their act together, update their cameras to 4K, and increase the bandwidth pipe, I'll take this Sony set to 6 stars.

Excellent 4K UHD TV and Crutchfield service! Right out of the box this set shows true colors and blacks. The up scaling of 1080P material has to be seen to beleivedl. I have not had a chance to watch any 4K UHD yet or utilize all it's features as I have the set for just a week now. The set connected via Wi Fi to my router instantly. I tried the simulated 3D and it looks great! I know that sometimes people are skeptical about ordering a big TV and having it delivered to their door but trust me the good folks at Crutchfield have got that all covered. The set arrived when they said it would despite being in the Christmas rush and the box was in perfect shape. I have been a Crutchfield customer for the last thirteen years and I have nothing but praise for their staff, from sales to tech support. If you are in the market for a Sony XBR 4K UHD TV buy it from Crutchfield. You will not be disappointed!
Pros: It's a Sony XBR! What more can I say?
Cons: None at this time.
Very thin, great picture, easy set up...I love this TV!
Pros: I have my Sonos soundbar hooked up to this tv and it is awesome! I got the Netflix app and hardly ever watch regular TV now
I bought this to replace a 40" XBR7 that just seems too small these days. The picture is fantastic, and the thin bezel is really thin, making the appearance very subdued. The Netflix app and other apps (Amazon, Hulu, Skype, Home Theater Setup, and Pandora are what I have tried so far) are very responsive and easy to navigate.
The only real thing I would gripe about is the built-in speakers, which aren't as good as my old XBR, but I have this TV attached to a Sony STR-DH750, which powers on automatically with the TV and provides more than enough sound.
Pros: Picture, colors, thin bezel, easy-to-navigate menus and apps
Cons: Built in speakers
Easy set up, great picture. Sleek and nice to look at. Many inputs. Great price and fast delivery.
Pros: Easy menus smooth operation like the passive 3d glasses, no adjustments necessary. 3D programs impressive.
Cons: Remote sensor is in not in a good place, it's at the bottom of the screen where I usually put my center speaker and of course that blocks it.
Super easy to set up with my Bose home theater system and the picture is fantastic. I have looked at some 4k content, but frankly, it doesn't look significantly different than regular HD, which is stunning. I'm very happy with this purchase. The Crutchfield folks were hugely helpful as well.
Pros: Stunning picture quality
Cons: Internet is a bit balky and requires a separate cable to use the home theater speakers. Since all my wiring is in the walls, I will need to bring in a technician to make that extra connection.
Picture quality is very good. Set up was easy. There is still much to learn in taking advantage of all the features. A simple user guide to review all the possibilities would be a nice added packaging document. I guess I can search the websites for that.
Pros: Great picture. TV sound is better than the Samsung I replaced. But I have since connected to my sound system so sound from the TV was not all that important for me.
Cons: Start up is slow but maybe that is necessary for all the features the TV has to offer. Screws provided for bracket mounting were not long enough for my installation. After searching for screw specs. it was a simple fix buying the length I needed but one more thing to buy. Why can't there be a standard for screw mounting size? Samsung uses a larger thread size. A simple user guide for all the features is needed. But these are all minor and do not minimize my satisfaction.
I love this TV, I'm so glad that I decided to get this model when I was looking for a bigger size. The picture and the sound are amazing!
Pros: Everything about this TV is great!
This is an outstanding 4K flat screen. The picture is beautiful in HD content. Have not viewed anything yet in Ultra High Definition but if the HD is any indication it will be stunning. Very, very easy setup with tons of apps and online connectivity. The touch pad is cool and easy to use. Shipping was a concern but the box arrived without a dent or tear. This is a very easy recommended buy.
Pros: Beautiful picture. Good looking stand and screen enclosure. Lots of connectivity provisions. Very easy set up.
Cons: What cons?
Amazing picture quality! Off axis view is great as well. I am upgrading from a 13 year old 3 CRT Panny HD projection set so the improvement is VERY noticeable. I'm using OTA broadcast TV, Charter HD cable box, and DVD/BD player as sources and all 3 have really great PQ on this set. Has very good digital OTA tuner.
Pros: Good black levels for nighttime/movie viewing and has plenty of output capability for brighter lit rooms as well.
Cons: Doesn't seem to have a "blue only mode" for color and hue tweaking so will have to use blue filter/glasses to tweak. Screen reflectiveness could be a little less.
Absolutely amazing tv! Best investment i ever made! Sony is still top of the line! Very clear picture! Excellent customer support!
Pros: Excellent crisp picture! Watched a 4k movie on netflix and was blown away!
This TV is really good and features are owessome
Pros: Great picture.
Cons: Menu and manual on TV. NO booklet.
Super crisp picture, very easy to set up and use smart features
Very good quality tv
Cons: Speakers not that good
Excellent picture and easy user interface. Hookup very simple and c-field customer service was tops. Worth the expense somfar
Pros: Beautiful picture, no blur at all on sports, easy hookups
Cons: Overly sensitive but useful swipe remote
Using this in concert with a Sony STR-DN 1050 receiver and DirectV Genie. Also a Sony blu-Ray through the AV receiver. Wow. Sunday ticket was phenomenal, but even better is Netflix series Marco Polo in 4K! Clear, bright and no artifacts... I'm using the TV's wireless and a local cable modem router that's maxed out at 15 gb. But if no other internet device is running the netflix 4 K runs with no buffering.. Try to load emails on the iPad and it all goes to poo... there's no 4k if you can't get at least 15 on your download speed. I'm not using the 3d at least the conversion from 2d. Too blurry. Battlefield4 on the Xboxone through the AV receiver with the TV set on game mode yields minimal lag...nuttin too tough to overcome...anything 1080 coming into the AVR gets up converted to 4k and sent to the TV which also has up conversion capability... I've found it to be excellent and don't want to reroute anything directly to the TV. If it works, don't mess with it! In short New technology that works, finally dropped to Joe Q. public pricing. I remember watching Saving Private Ryan through DVD, a surround sound system and an HD TV and thought wow. I just finished it again. I'm stunned. Simply remarkable. Well worth the price.
Pros: Clear vibrant picture, though listed as 240hz refresh rate, sports are fluid and as clear as on my other Sony with 960 motion flow Of note: my dog now watches tv? Before a dog or cat on the tv was ignored. Now it's war. Too funny. I had a 60 inch Sony and thought going smaller would be a disappointment. Nope. It's simply amazing the picture that's presented. All HD 1080 shows on direct tv go to 4k as well as 1080 Netflix. Remotes yes there are two, are functional. Easy set up and firmware upda
Cons: Well when the price dropped, that took care of one con. I'm still unsure how three day shipping equates to 6 days even with two business days included. Rare for crutchfield to drop the ball on shipping..usually they get it here in two days, box came with a fist sized hole in the side, but once the box was opened in the presence of the shipper and BEFORE I signed for it showed no damage at all..EEEK I wuz definitely spiking my blood pressure when I saw that hole.
The television is better than expected. The 4k upscaling makes all television and blu Ray viewings phenomenonal. The Crutchfield team made the purchase effortless. I would highly recommend this television to anyone.
Pros: Picture quality, speed, remote control, app features
Cons: Internet refreshing to connect to the Internet
I have not had this TV very long, but so far I love it. Can't wait to try it with Ultra hd source as well as 3D
Pros: Beautiful picture
Remember when Sony TV's were head and shoulders above the rest? Sony's getting it's swagger back and you can once again walk into a big box store and spot the Sony XBR TVs from across the showroom. This TV replaces a 10-year-old plasma TV that was top-of-the-line in it's day. I held out for so long waiting for something that wasn't just bigger, but was sharper and with all of the punch and contrast that plasma TV's have. I couldn't be happier, this TV upscales standard HD better than anything else I've seen.
Pros: Great screen, great HD upscaling, slim design. I have not seen any 4K content yet on this screen and I'm amazed at how great HD looks, can't wait to experience 4K!
Cons: Exiting Smart TV mode to return to HDMI input is not intuitive.
Picture is great...haven't watched much 4k yet thought. If you get this, make sure to update the SW before worrying about a flickering HDMI input source.
Miserably bad delivery service. Crutchfield says it's a UPS problem, UPS doesn't know anything and can't tell me anything, I can only say that I will have to take this extremely poor service into account the next time I am thinking of ordering from Crutchfield. I only hope the unit gets here in good/usable condition, so I don't have to repeat this comedy of errors.
Gorgeous picture, great design and stunning colors! Not one flaw on this TV!
Pros: Picture, design, colors, size
I bought this during the Black Friday sale and got a solid deal. The unit came with a scratched screen and I have not been to fully test it out. They are sending me a new one and I am looking forward enjoying that one defect free.
The picture is stunning even on regular cable TV. When watching HD channels it just gets better. When watching Blue ray movies it's like watching the movie almost for the first time. We have only had the TV for 2 weeks now but I do not have any regrets buying it. The only issue so far has been using the smart features on the TV and having to use an optical audio cable to my Pioneer surround sound. I am told Sony does not always talk well through HDMI to other brands and installing the optic cable solved this. I am not a fan of the remote, either one. It came with 2 types and they are slightly annoying to use. My verizon cable remote is able to do most common functions but we will be buying a universal controller as soon as we can narrow it down. Overall I would recommend this TV!
Pros: Easy to hook up. FANTASTIC picture with any input signal. Crutchfield has been a huge help.
Cons: Does not talk well with Pioneer surround sound and requires optic cable. Remotes are difficult to use.
For the price, this TV has every feature I like. Lots of inputs, Upcoverts everything (You tube videos look great)and its a 4K ready Sony XBR 55".
Pros: Excellent picture/ color quality / Upconversion Internet and TV
Cons: Instructions could be more detailed
I've always purchased Panasonic in the past and I took a leap of faith buying a Sony and buying a TV from Crutchfield. Totally satisfied all the way around. The buying experiencing was great and I liked how Crutchfield verifies the order before shipping. My daughter says it best about the TV, the Sony is the only TV we have now, everything else is just black frames with a picture in it.
Pros: Excellent picture
Cons: Took a little bit to figure out how to mount the stand in the center position. Wow that's the only negative.
Great picture right out of the box.
like others on this review chain i purchased and returned a similar sized samsung tv, the picture was terrible. For about $400 more and a restocking fee i exchanged the samsung for a sony and have a dramatically improved picture. the samsung, at least in the 55 in range is a vastly inferior tv, buy the sony.
I will admit I have been a Sony fan ever since my first 25"XBR over 30 years ago and the XBR-55X850B solidifies my loyalty to Sony products. The unit arrived as promised and set up was easy to set up with on-screen prompts. The picture is clean, clear and crisp from cable TV source and exceptional from Blu-ray and 4K. The sound quality is easily adjusted, but there are still some issues with background noise interfering with voice on some TV shows. I will be hooking up my 5.1 Home Theater system or getting a sound bar.
Pros: Very nice picture from all sources. Easy set up.
Cons: Typical sound from built-in TV speakers
Awesome TV ! Beautiful picture ! Very Pleased !
This is my second 4k TV from Sony and I am still very impressed by both of them. The picture is so surreal it is breath taking and stunning. You have to see the TV for yourself in order to be convinced. Blu-ray, Netflix and other high end media is wonderful.
Pros: Easy to use and set up. Camera on the television works as advertised.
It's a very good picture, but just a plain Flat Panel that lacks aesthetics appeal. I really wish that I had gone with Samsung's Curve, which is simply beautiful along with the picture. Sony cheaped out with this model IMHO.
Pros: Very good picture. Sony Sound Bar works very well with the TV
Cons: Cheap bezel frame that is unlike previous Bravia models and downgrades the appeal.
My wife and I were looking into replacing our Sony 48" XBR with something that would use up all the space of our built-in entertainment system. As soon as it arrived, I was thoroughly impressed with the contents and ease of setup. Removing the box "top" was a piece of cake, while attaching the stands on either end went extremely easy. The only tough part was removing our 48" from the cabinet (it felt much heavier than the 55")! Initial setup was also a breeze and as soon as I entered our wireless router passcode we were able to immediately enjoy 4K programming through our Netflix account.
We were impressed at the TV's ability to up-convert the signal from our satellite box-top. Watching our blu-ray collection is also amazing. If it looks this clear without 4K, we can't wait to see what blu-ray 4K will look like when it becomes available!
All-in-all, we are tremendously happy with our decision to purchase this TV. Make sure you have someone to help you pick it up and place it.
Pros: Easy to set up. Picture is perfect out of the box. The colors (bright and dark) are perfect!
Cons: None at this time. If its anything like our old XBR, we should never have any problems.
Superb picture, great sound, excellent 3D effect. Have a Panasonic 40-inch 3D but the Sony is observably brighter and clearer. Only advantage to Panasonic is that i automatically recognizes 3D content, where the Sony must be manually selected.
Pros: Picture clarity and brightness, 3D effect
Cons: Must manually select 3D processor for 3D content.
I compared this Sony to the same size Samsung that was right next to each other in a local store. The Samsung is very "bright" and looked a bit washed out where the Sony was definitely more saturated with color. This is a 120MHz TV and I found that the fast motion blur is only slight and you have to concentrate and look for it so unless you only watch sports this TV will be fine.
Pros: Colors and blacks look great. Easy setup
Cons: In using it for internet access I have not found the browser they say is on the Smart TV
I HAD A SONY 52 LCD, I WENT TO CRUTCHFIELD ONY TO SEE THE TV, 15 MINUTES LATER IT WAS IN THE CAR. I BUY ALL MY HIGHEND PRODUCTS AT CRUTCHFIELD. THERE SUPPORT IS FLAWLESS.
Pros: VALUE, PICTURE, FEATURES, EASE OF OPERATION OF ALL THE SMART TV FUNCTIONS
I purchased this TV as a birthday gift for my boyfriend and now I think he loves it more than me!!! The tv looks great colors are amazing this was our first 4K tv and I'm never going back!!! Crutchfield was great one I first ordered the tv UPS delivered it and it was cracked straight down the middle obviously from the way the UPS driver was slamming it!!! I quickly called Crutchfield and they sent out a replacement the same day. BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER.
Pros: The Colors best 4K I've ever seen!!!!
great ! picture quality is a 10
Pros: easy to setup, easy to watch even in a room with floor to ceiling windows
I have a 37" Sony LED XBR TV bought several years ago. The Sony display is beautiful and never had any problems. When I saw the new 55" Sony 4k LED TV at another retailer I was "blown away" by the high resolution and beautiful colorization. Comparing it along side the Samsung you can see the difference - the Sony colors seem to have more depth and not overly contrasted like on the Samsung. Given my past good experiences with Sony products i decided that the time was right to move on to the next generation of TV - 4k. Once received from Crutchfield - excellent service - and setup the Sony set looks great. Playing various Blue-ray and DVDs it was theater quality all the way. The only drawback was the sound - the voices were hard to hear. The solution was to go to Setup, click Sound and select Cinema. The Voice volume (Zoom) is increased. Now both voice and sound effects are very satisfactory (you can also set them manually with the equalizer slidebar.) Bottom line - I recommend this Sony TV to those who want to have Cinema level viewing in there home.
Pros: Life-like color and resolution. Easy to use controls and setup.
Cons: May require some work to get the sound right.
Though being biased toward anything Sony, I nonetheless compared this to several other TV's in it's class. Once again, the Sony delivered in all aspects important to me i.e picture quality, product design, product functionality. Highly recommended.
Pros: Stunning picture quality in terms of resolution, color and brightness.
I have owned many Sony TV's and this one is by far the best. I looked at all the other comparable models from other manufacturers and the picture, features, and quality of the Sony's stood out. I was a bit apprehensive about ordering something this expensive (delicate) and having it delivered but the order process through Crutchfield was flawless (as usual) and delivery was coordinated and professional. The TV is easy to setup and operate and once your wireless network is established, you are off and running. The 4K picture is absolutely the best one we have ever had! Stunning detail, excellent features, and a funky little remote make the Sony XBR's worth the $$$.
Pros: Picture Features Two remotes (one normal, one touch-pad) Ease of setup
I have only had it for about 10 days but so far it has done everthing i wanted.
Pros: The simulated 3d is real good as well as the regular HD quality. Also the picture feature is real good from a usb flash drive.
Cons: A small problem with my older Sony sound bar. It blocks the tv ir eye. So i placed it in the rear and the sound is great.
Very simple set up with clear instructions.Picture quality extremely clean, for the price of this TV it can't be beat!
Pros: Just a very good TV
Cons: Screen picks up glare, shadows, just draw shades
Best tv I have even owned Would definitely recommend this tv and Crutchfield, Awsome service, delivery was a breeze, they even sent a postcard thanking me. I could have bought it locally but I ordered from Crutchfield because of there Awsome reputation
Pros: Picture quality is the best I have ever seen Easy to set up
Cons: Not a thing
Watched first football game it was like watching in 3D, picture is great. Still learning all the things it has to offer.
Pros: Can't say enough about it its the best TV I have ever had. I am 64 yrs old now but love new things that come out.
Cons: none so far
I was on the market for an upgrade from HD to 4K after I saw a 4K tv in a local store. I actually stopped in my tracks when I saw a cool New York city night scene in 4 K. When I was ready to buy, there was no question that I would buy a Sony. I already have three other Sony HD televisions. I'm a fan. There was also no question that Crutchfield would be where I bought it. Needless to say,the picture is so clear, I said to myself I cant believe this is so much better than the Sony HD tv I bought only three years ago. Although the available 4K content is sparse, and Netflix does have 4K content and a free month of Netflix came with the tv, the real difference in network HD or cable tv more than justify the purchase. And Blu-Ray discs are mind blowing. The built in apps for Netflix,You-Tube,etc. are very handy. You can also send pictures from your smart phone for viewing on the screen. Tv comes with two legs for standing on flat surface or can be hung on wall. I am very happy I made this purchase and equally happy I bought from Crutchfield. I ordered on a Sunday and had it on Wednesday. TV arrived in perfect condition. Im sure you will be as happy with this tv as I am. Cheers!
Pros: Reasonable price, incredible clear picture, lightening fast delivery and great support from Crutchfield. Its a win win decision.
Cons: I haven't got one complaint about the purchase.
My 12+ year old rear projection TV was finally on it's last leg, so I started looking at reviews for 4K TVs. I had owned Sony TVs before and had been happy, but in recent years the reviews weren't all that glowing. But as I did my research, most reviews for the Sony 4K TVs were very positive. When I looked at the specs of the Sony XBR-55X850B, it was such a step up from my rear-projection that I decided to go ahead and take the plunge. The first thing I noticed is how thin the bezel is. My rear projection TV took up a whole corner in my great room! I have had the TV hooked up for about a week now, and I am so impressed with the picture quality. Even with non-4K content, the picture is extremely crisp, right out of the box with no changes to settings yet. I had an A/V person come in to run Ethernet cable so that I will be able to handle 4K streaming, and this weekend my internet will get upgraded to be able to handle up to 30MBps. I plan to look into Netflix since they have 4K content. I am sure that in a year and a half or two years the prices on 4K TVs will come down, but I have no regrets. I highly recommend this TV to anyone who is looking at upgrading. It won't disappoint! Welcome back, Sony!
Pros: Picture quality, Smart TV functions, 3D capability, 4K, easy set-up
Cons: None so far
The best TV I have ever owned. Easy to set-up and easy to navigate through the menus. The color and picture quality is perfect. Netflix and is now streaming more 4K programs and we watched the World Cup on 4K...you could see every little detail on the screen...stunning! I picked this one because of Sony's reputation for great TVs and I wanted a thin bezel around the screen. This one you get all picture. Also, it got great reviews on the web. Sound is ok (average) but, I have it hooked up to my stereo surround sound, so sound is not an issue for me. You paid a little more for a high-end Sony, but, you get what you pay for and this one is a real winner! I have read that some people are waiting for the prices to come down, but, that may be in 2-3 years. To me it was worth paying extra and getting it now (IMO). If you buy this TV, you'll fall in love.
Pros: Picture, color, easy set-up, easy menu guide, thin bezel edge around screen, very attractive TV design.
Cons: Nothing so far
I have to start out by saying that I spent $130 to return the Samsung 55U9000 55" Curved 4K Smart LED TV. After trying for almost 60 days to get the picture right on this TV I was never successful. After spending over $3000 on a TV I was happy to send it back. The Sony XBR55X850B 55" 4K Smart LED TV right out of the box had amazing color and picture quality!!! I can't tell you how glad I am to have made the exchange. It is so hard to compare products in a store and I have to say it looks way better in my house than it did in a local retail store.
Pros: Picture, picture, picture!!!! I have Time Warner cable (until the day Google Fiber comes to Austin) which is super compressed and poor quality. The Samsung made cable look even worse but this Sony has amazing color and upscaling. The Samsung was almost unwatchable out of the box. Netflix documentaries in 4K are stunning!! It is easy to get to Netflix with one button on the remote. I originally wanted the curved TV because of ambient light but this TV is better with glare than the Samsung.
Cons: The smart TV functions and remote are not as good as the Samsung but this is more than outweighed by the picture quality. The 3D was better on the Samsung but with poor color. I don't use the sound on the TV because I use a home theater system but it is not very powerful.

Ultra 4K Resolution: See more on TV than ever before with over 8 million individual pixels (3,840 x 2,160) compared to about 2 million (1,920 x 1,080) on your 1080p HDTV. Advanced picture processing also ensures that every single pixel displays images with superb brightness and authentic detail. It's the highest resolution picture Sony has ever produced on a TV.
Note: Add a Sony 4K Ultra HD Media Player (FMP-X10, sold separately) for exclusive access to the Video Unlimited 4K service, which hosts the largest selection of feature films and TV episodes in 4K Ultra HD for the home. Choose to download new releases and classic films for rental or purchase. Or choose from a vast library of included 4K videos.
HEVC Codec: Sony's 2014 4K Ultra-HD TVs are optimized to support the new HEVC codec that is needed for a variety of current and forthcoming 4K video services from Netflix and other providers without the need to buy additional update kits. The Sony Ultra-HD television also supports the latest HDMI 2.0 to connect external media players (sold separately) and 4K/60p playback for viewing 4K sports in the future. Current available 4K content includes:
4K X-Reality Pro Engine: Sony's new 4K X-Reality Pro Engine enhances Ultra-HD, HD, and SD images by analyzing and refining images with beautifully natural detail and astounding color. This 4K television upscales your favorite TV shows, DVDs and Blu-ray movies, even video-on-demand content, and smartphone videos to Ultra-HD quality. The 4K X-Reality Pro Engine breathes new life into everything you see with phenomenal 4K (3,840 x 2,160) resolution.
Dynamic Edge LED Backlighting w/ Local Dimming: Dynamic Edge LED backlighting with local dimming delivers pitch-black night scenes and illuminates bright scenes that pop with vibrant color. Rather than illuminating the entire screen, contrast is boosted in just the right areas for a more realistic picture.
TRILUMINOS Display Technology: Unique to Sony, TRILUMINOS Display technology creates incredibly true, natural shades of colors; just the way you want them. Hard-to-reproduce reds, aqua blues, and emerald greens are displayed beautifully, so landscapes and seascapes look more vivid. Faces look better, too, with natural skin tones. It's all thanks to a new TRILUMINOS display that gives images a heightened sense of depth.
MotionFlow XR 240 Technology: Sony's MotionFlow XR 240 technology feature a precise backlight control that is synchronized with the liquid crystal movement from frame-to-frame creating clearer, sharper moving images. MotionFlow XR 240 combines 120 frames-per-second with the TV's advanced LED backlight system to simulate a 240 Hz effect. MotionFlow XR 240 provides smooth and precise detail during fast-action scenes for fast action movies and sports by reducing blur caused by quick camera movements, enhancing image sharpness, and overall creating a clearer picture. You can select between various settings.
Automatic Intelligence: The TV's built-in Light Sensor automatically adjusts the picture brightness based on the amount of light in the room. As a result, you can enjoy automatic customized picture brightness and save energy without lifting a finger. The televisions Advance Contrast Enhancer (ACE) automatically adjusts backlight and contrast to the most suitable setting judging from the brightness of the screen. This setting is especially effective for dark scenes, and will increase the contrast distinction for the darker picture scenes. The ACE can be set to High, Medium, Low, or Off.
Video Inputs: The Sony XBR-X850B series TV is equipped with HDMI (2.0), Component, and Composite video inputs. A back cover has to be removed to access these video inputs.
Note: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners with an RF-coaxial input, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.
24pTrue Cinema (24p Input Capability): Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sony wisely takes advantage of this by including 24p input capability via HDMI on this television producing images that are smooth and natural looking.
MHL Compatible: The HDMI 2 and 4 input are designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the TV's HDMI 2 or 4 (MHL) input using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on the Sony TV from your mobile smartphone. The TV's IR remote can be used to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Stop, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Menu navigation). Your MHL compliant device will also charge while connected to the TV's HDMI 2 or 4 input. To find MHL-certified devices, go to www.mhlconsortium.org.
Passive 3D Technology (w/ glasses): The Sony XBR-X850B series LED-LCD TV uses the same Passive 3D technology used to power 3D films in today's movie theaters. The Sony LED-LCD TV creates stereoscopic three-dimensional images using polarized glasses (2 pairs included), making it ideal for 3D movies and games. This passive 3D technology offers wider viewing angles, no "flicker-effect", and less eye strain.
Note: The Sony LED-LCD TV can display in 3D via 3D broadcasting or when the TV is connected to a compatible device, such as a 3D-ready Blu-ray player with 3D content. The TV must be connected to your 3D source via HDMI (v.1.4) and you must wear the included passive 3D glasses in order to see these images in 3D (three-dimensional) format.
Wide Mode: The Wide Mode feature allows you to select the screen display which fits the current video image and TV screen best. Based on the original signal source, you may see black bars around the picture or just on the both sides of the screen. Sometimes you will see the picture fill the full screen.
|Wide Mode||16:9 Original Source||4:3 Original Source|
|Wide Zoom||Enlarges the picture to fill the screen with minimal distortion.||Enlarges the center portion of the 4:3 picture proportionately, while the left and right edges of the screen are stretched to fill the screen.|
|Normal||Displays a 4:3 picture in its original aspect ratio when the original source is 4:3 (available for 480i or 480p sources).||Displays the 4:3 picture in its original size with black bars at the left and right sides to fill the screen (available for 480i or 480p sources).|
|Full||Displays the picture at its original size.||Stretches the entire 4:3 picture horizontally only to fill the screen.|
|Zoom||Enlarges the picture proportionately, both vertically and horizontally.||Enlarges the entire 4:3 picture proportionately to fill the screen (useful for watching Letterbox movies).|
Automatically changes screen settings base upon incoming video signal and content.
Picture Adjustments: The TV's picture adjustments can be made for a particular A/V input or for all inputs. You can also lock the television's picture adjustments to prevent the TV's Picture Settings from being changed.
PIP & PAP: The Sony LED-LCD TV offers PIP (picture in picture) and PAP (picture and picture).
ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel in the television's HDMI 1 input enables the TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input. The audio from the TV's tuner, network connection, and USB input can pass as Dolby Digital or 2ch PCM. HDMI and analog connected devices will be output as 2ch PCM only.
Note: Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an A/V receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI IN 1 port. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.
Audio Outputs: The Sony HDTV offers analog and digital audio outputs. A back cover has to be removed to access these audio outputs.
S-Force Front Surround: S-FORCE Front Surround provides a virtual surround experience made possible using just two front speakers. S-Force Front Surround simulates 5.1ch surround sound, with an enlarged sweet spot that everyone in the room can enjoy. You can active a 3D mode to generate a virtual three-dimensional sound effect to match your 3D video.
Note: The speakers of this TV provide different sound images according to how you position the television. You can select between "Table-Top Stand" or "Wall Mount" to provide the best sound quality based on the television's placement.
Preset Sound Modes + 7-Band EQ: The TV offers five preset sound modes (Standard, Music, Cinema, Game, Sports). The TV is also equipped with a 7-band EQ (100Hz, 200Hz, 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz, 5kHz, 10kHz). You can adjust the level of each band between -12 to +12 dB.
Advanced Audio Settings: The TV offers additional audio adjustments to enhance the television's sound.
Optional Wireless Sub: You can use Sony's optional wireless subwoofer (SWF-BR100, sold separately) to extend the bass response of the TV's sound. Simply connect the wireless transceiver supplied with the SWF-BR100 wireless subwoofer to the TV's analog audio output and USB port.

You can stream movies, videos, music, and more with Bravia Internet Video; while the built-in web-browser lets you search on-line content by URL. The Opera TV Store lets you download additional apps. You can even stay connected with social networking apps. Click here for a full list of Sony Entertainment Network content (over 200 streaming services).
Note: Video quality and picture size vary and are dependent upon broadband speed and delivery by content provider. Online content may require additional fees and/or PC registration. Available online content may change without notice.
4K Network Streaming: This Ultra-HD TV even offers "HEVC" decoding, which means it'll be able to display 4K content from online movie & TV show providers (like Netflix, UltraFlix or Sony Video Unlimited). Netflix 4K streaming can be done directly from the TV; you will need the Sony 4K media player (sold separately) to view 4K content from Sony Video Unlimited. 4K network streaming requires a network speed of 15Mbps or greater. A wired Ethernet connection is recommended over a wireless WiFi connection for better performance. If you desire a WiFi connection, then use a dual-band Gigabit wireless-N router for 4K streaming. Make sure the Sony television has the latest software/firmware updates installed.

Hi Greg, I own the Sony XBR-55X850B and I like it alot. You really should consider getting a 4K capable home surround receiver because as more and more Blue rays are mastered in 4K you will want to be watching them or adding them to your collection and you will most likely be using the receiver as the go between your BD player and the TV so having at minimum 4K pass thru ability would be desireable. I bought my Sony 4K capable STR DN840 receiver before I got my TV then I bought a Sony BD player with 4K upgrading capability. 4K is the future. My receiver is pushing a set of Polk TSi 400s with a set of TSi 100 sitting atop them and a good Polk center channel speaker, those are up front, I have a set of Bose 151s as my side speakers and another set of the 151s and a set of Polk OWM 3s on that back wall too. There's also two Polk 12 subs on the floor to give the music and movies the kick when needed so my receiver is sending sound out to 13 seperate speakers. I stream my music from my Ipad Itunes library. If your receiver doesnt have air play cabability you dont know what your missing. Good luck! [ rick Feb 26, 2015 ]
It my understanding that cable companies are not yet providing ANY content in 4K definition. As long as your receiver has a "high def" output jack (such as an HDMI port), you should be all set. [ Dawn Feb 25, 2015 ]
no [ GLEN J Feb 24, 2015 ]
You probably should but you don't necessarily have to. I have an older receiver (Yamaha RX-V992) that is likely older than the one you're referring to and it doesn't have any HDMI provisions. I connected the TV to the receiver using an inexpensive digital fiber optic audio cable and it works pretty good. [ James Feb 24, 2015 ]
Don't know what you mean by "receiver". The TV has a built-in tuner for antenna hook-up. If you are using cable, you'll need a HD cable box to take full advantage of the 4k capability. Actually there is no channel (broadcast or cable) that uses 4K. Only Netflix has 4K movies at this time. That said, the Sony automatically upscales HD signals to 4K, and does a fine job. Regular format TV signals don't look so great on the 55 inch, not any fault of the TV, but the low resolution of the picture being displayed. Also the 3D capability of this TV is fantastic. You'll need a DVD player that can play 3D movies. [ Michael Feb 24, 2015 ]
Sorry, I haven't tried to do that on my set. Good Luck! [ Raymond Feb 20, 2015 ]
Sorry but I don't have an answer, I haven't tried to hookup headphones. [ JOHN Feb 19, 2015 ]

Demi Sorry for the delay. I am able to watch Netflix 3d movies (there is a limited amount) with the passive glasses w/o issue. Not sure about the codec. Bill [ William Feb 27, 2015 ]
Thank you Daniel [ Demi Feb 22, 2015 ]
I do not believe the Sony Netflix app supports 3D content. From what I've seen online, others have posed the same question and it's a matter of whether you see the specific menu for 3D, such as the one for UltraHD 4K. I do not see an option for 3D content in the Netflix app on my X850B. [ DANIEL J Feb 22, 2015 ]
Thank you Matt [ Demi Feb 22, 2015 ]
Currently I am not aware of Netflix or Amazon offering 3D programming. It is certainly Possible that 3D will be offered with a future firmware upgrade. [ Matt Feb 20, 2015 ]
Sorry I have no idea. It works great streaming Netflix, Amazon.... If you give me a simple test id be happy to run it. [ Rodrick Feb 18, 2015 ]
Susan , I don't know if it has the tuner to get local stations since I am a dish customer ,but I'm sure it would . It is internet ready , you can scipe , ect. Very nice T V . awesome picture . This is my third Sony bravia I have owned , I prefer Sony over any other there is , very reliable and dependable . my first Sony lasted sixteen years. True till the end.clearest picture , so clear you can see razor burns on men's face. I would recommend it to any one. [ ROBERT S Jan 29, 2015 ]
Hi there Susan. If by terrestrial broadcasts you mean just regular over the air broadcast television that doesn't require any type of subscription then yes is has a built in tuner capable of decoding it without the use of a separate box. You may still need to buy an antenna in order to clear up the channels but other than that it will be fine. This tv is fully equipped with hdmi 2.0 ports not upscaled 1.6 ports so you are good on that front. The TV also has the capabilities of decoding the HEVC 264 codec which is the current and future 4k codec standard. That's what netflix, amazon instant video, Hulu plus and mGO are all decoding in for their 4k content. The HEVC 264 codec is also what the 4k blu-ray discs will be formatted in when they release later this year. Hope this information helps. -Ryan [ Ryan Jan 28, 2015 ]
Yes it has a built in tuner to receive digital broadcast signals. It has a net based upgrade feature with the only caveat is that it is not a wireless connection to your home network. It specifically calls out for a wired connection. I have not tried if a wireless adapter in a USB port will work. [ Joe Jan 28, 2015 ]
Yes, it does. I recommend getting an antenna and connecting it to the coax input so that you can get better reception. Once you connect the TV to your router, either wirelessly or with an Ethernet cable, you can update the software on it. Obviously, if there's an update for it, it should tell you when you turn it on. It did for me. I also recommend buying a powerline adapter and connecting it to your router since it'll be much faster. [ Nathan Jan 28, 2015 ]
Yes, the TV has a built in tuner and it quickly auto-programs when an antenna is attached. Set-up was complete in just a few minutes. Sony does a fantastic job of updating software on their advanced hardware. The TV updates when connected to WiFi or when hard wired to an internet connection whenever needed. I love this TV and decided to buy an addition 65" for another room a few weeks later. This TV series is one of the few to have 3D capabilities. They are becoming more rare. We love the passive 3D glasses that don't require batteries and work really well. [ Jared Jan 28, 2015 ]
Yes this television has a built in tuner. I am not sure about upgrading to the current standard. This is currently the top of the line model for Sony (XBR). The picture is magnificent and when viewing a movie shot in 4K (Monuments Men) the picture is really stunning. What sold me is talking to several sales people at box stores that explained the plus/minus of Sony, Samsung, LG, and Visio. When asked what they owned, most said Sony. [ Michael Jan 28, 2015 ]
I do not have the problem but you can try the zoom on tv [ GLEN J Jan 22, 2015 ]
Hi Ragu J., I have noticed this effect also, mostly if I am switching from one HDMI input to another when the screen is blank and dark, it doesn't appear to adversely effect the picture in any way when its displaying cable channels or a blueray disc. My BD player is a new 4K upscaling Sony and my home theatre receiver is a Sony STR DN840 4K so they all play well togethor and all were purchased through Crutchfield, a great place and great people to do business with!!! [ rick Jan 22, 2015 ]
I personally have seen nothing that you are mentioning about on the edges of the screen [ Kenneth Jan 21, 2015 ]
I don't notice anything like this. sorry [ Dominic Jan 21, 2015 ]
Can't see any light around the edge of the screen on my 55X850B. It's several months old. Only LED light is the illuminated light below the "SONY" label. It's described 0n page 22 of the Operating Instruction Manual. But I'm sure that's not what you're asking about. Is the light you see coming from behind the screen, around the screen/case interface, or somewhere along the case? I presume it is the one first mentioned. You might want to talk to a SONY customer support rep at 1-800-222-SONY. [ Michael Jan 21, 2015 ]
Less than 5 ft. [ VINCENT J Dec 10, 2014 ]
My XBR55X850R is already installed on the wall so I can only make a guess. It is probably 4 to 6 feet. I had a power receptacle installed behind the TV and the excess cord conveniently wraps around the wall mount. I did it this way because I understand that the power cord should not be run in the same penetration that carries the other 4 cables (HDMI) connecting the TV to external equipment and I did not want multiple penetrations. BTW You have made a good choice. I am really happy with this TV. [ ERNEST H Dec 10, 2014 ]
Looks about 5 feet , Mike S. [ JEFFREY A Dec 09, 2014 ]
The cord is about 54 inches long (4 1/2 ft.). It exits the TV 12 inches from the right side (looking at the front of the TV) and 9 inches up from the stand. [ Thomas Dec 09, 2014 ]
Estimate 4ft. [ JON Dec 09, 2014 ]
Sorry, don't know yet--we haven't unpacked the tv since our home is under construction. [ Elizabeth Dec 09, 2014 ]
Althought I wasn't able to measure it exactly, it is slightly longer than 50 inches. [ Michael Dec 09, 2014 ]
Mike, I don't the exact length of the cord because the TV is already mounted to the wall. I do know that it was not long at all and would guesstimate the length to be maybe around 5'. I have mine mounted to the wall with a Peerless mount that pulls up to 27" from the wall so I had to connect the TV's power cord to a small extension cord. I then plugged both into the surge/battery backup. Both cords snaked through the wall without problems. Hope this answers your question. [ MICHAEL D Dec 09, 2014 ]
The power cord is 60" long, but it connects to the back of the TV at about 8" from the bottom of the TV, so the "useable" cord length from the bottom of the TV to the plug is 52". [ Michael Dec 09, 2014 ]
We stream Netflix directly through the TV alone via our in-house wireless network. I would assume that it is streaming in 4K. I'm not sure about YouTube. [ Dawn Dec 02, 2014 ]
No once your on Netflix or YouTube you will see the 4k shows or videos automatically nothing needed [ YOLANDA Nov 28, 2014 ]
No, you open up the app and select from the 4k collection -not much right now. Picture is great! [ Kujtim Nov 27, 2014 ]
No, it works fine the way it is. There's a limited amount of movies or shows that stream in 4k. As for YouTube, I'm not sure how that works. I believe there are certain videos that work in 4k. [ Manuel Nov 27, 2014 ]
No, it connects via wifi and streams very well. [ MICHAEL P Nov 26, 2014 ]
I do not use those apps [ GLEN J Nov 26, 2014 ]
No, Netflix is embedded in the TV. There is even a Netflix button on the remote. I have used Netflix through the TV to stream 4k. But only about 12 movies/TV shows are available right now. [ STEFAN Nov 26, 2014 ]
It does not everything you need is built in [ Steven Nov 26, 2014 ]
It doors not everything you need is built in [ Steven Nov 26, 2014 ]
No. When you connect your TV to the Internet and sign into Netflix a 4K category will show. Streaming is the same as any other media. [ William Nov 26, 2014 ]
I have the TV and you don't need any additional modules. Netflix YouTube and 4K work great! [ CALHOUN Nov 26, 2014 ]
No it's a 2014 model so it has everything you need to stream in 4k already I use it all the time ! Good 4k tv and ups scales well especially with OPPO 103 and forced 4k output for reg 1080p or even lower resolutions Sony is great so far keeping updates coming . Hope this helps Joe [ Joseph Nov 26, 2014 ]
We are streaming both but I don't think they are in 4K. I'm not sure it's possible to stream in 4K. Generally speaking, streaming produces a poorer picture than DVD's (and certainly poorer than Blu-ray). Sorry I can't be more helpful. [ Stuart Nov 26, 2014 ]
You download the Netflix or YouTube app on the TV itself, and use those apps. I would think as long as the movie or video is 4k, it would then stream through the installed app on the TV [ John Nov 26, 2014 ]
The 4k streaming needs the high speed internet, other than that there is no setup required. [ ASHOKA Nov 26, 2014 ]
I think we have the same problem with the tv stand. And yes they can be placed in the middle position a few inches away from the sony logo hope that helps!!! [ YOLANDA Sep 13, 2014 ]
Yes they could also be attach on the middle of tv, as pre holes for it. [ Adalberto Sep 10, 2014 ]
yes, I don't have it on stand but you have two places one at 54" and another at 17" you will see it on the back of tv. [ Manuel Sep 09, 2014 ]
There are two positions, one is closer to the center, about 17" apart, or near the ends. [ TERRY L. Sep 09, 2014 ]
The stands have two positions. There is an inner location where the stands (legs) are less than 18 inches apart. I am using the inner positions. The TV also has attachment points on its back where you could attach a strap or other support, as Sony recommends, to provide added stability. [ R. Gerard Sep 09, 2014 ]
No , but can be either at ends or In middle. [ Joseph Sep 09, 2014 ]
Yes, you can either mount them at the edge of the TV (as pictured), or at another specific point closer together - about a third of the TV's width in from each side. [ Hoai Sep 09, 2014 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: A operation manual that covers setup and different kinds of setup up is included. And of course we have technical support to assist. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy Sep 09, 2014 ] Staff
Thanks I appreciate the response ! and answer . Joe [ Joseph Jul 11, 2014 ]
The edge light with local dimming is supposed to help brrnirniing out the blacks in local area by turning off or down the color LEDs. However, most write ups on testing identify this as not being very effective at least with earlier models complaining mainly about a halo effect and noting that plasmas are the only units that have true blacks. That said, I have had my TV for a week now and I have not noted any problems with "muddy" blacks and the colors are very clear. Now, I may not be the most discriminating video viewer, but I have viewed things via smart TV streaming, DVDs, satellite feeds and DVR files and I have been very satisfied. Now, I do not game and I do not have a blu-ray player which may make a difference, but I have to say that for my needs this Sony is great. [ Thomas E. Jul 10, 2014 ]
