Whether it's due to their decades of experience building the highest-performing TVs available, or because they're the only TV maker that owns a movie studio, Sony consistently delivers a beautifully lifelike picture. The KDL-65W850A demonstrates Sony's total mastery of TV display technology. Images come alive on its big 65" screen, which has about 40% more viewing area than a 55" TV.
Sony TVs have long been known for their powerful video processing. The new X-Reality™ Pro chip enhances picture quality by analyzing and correcting images, resulting in impressively natural detail and color. You'll see the benefits of X-Reality Pro on everything from Blu-ray discs to Netflix® movies to video clips from your smartphone. X-Reality Pro enhances detail and reduces video noise in a sophisticated way. It actually draws on a database of real patterns, shapes and textures to display a startlingly lifelike picture.
Sports fans love the way Sony's Motionflow XR 480 technology produces clear, lifelike motion for that at-the-game feeling. It's a finely tuned combination of 120Hz refresh rate, backlight scanning, and some additional video processing. And Motionflow's benefits go beyond sports viewing. If you've ever wanted to get rid of that jerky, distracting image judder you see during horizontal or vertical camera pans in movies, Motionflow can do it.
Unique to Sony, TRILUMINOS Display LED backlighting creates remarkably pure, lifelike colors. This cutting-edge "quantum dot" technology achieves a wider color range. Even hard-to-reproduce shades like deep reds and emerald greens are displayed beautifully. Sony's "Dynamic Edge" edge-lit LED backlight system essentially divides the screen into regions, each of which can be dimmed independently. This is a form of "local dimming," and it provides excellent picture contrast with black levels that get really black.
More and more people these days are turning to the web for day-to-day viewing, so a TV's Internet smarts are important. The KDL-65W850A includes built-in apps for accessing the Sony Entertainment Network, home to thousands of movies, shows, games and more. You can also stream movies instantly from Netflix® or listen to Pandora® Internet radio through the TV. Built-in Wi-Fi® lets you enjoy entertainment pulled from the web or a PC on your home network without connecting an Ethernet cable. Wirelessly streamed HD video can look surprisingly good.
In addition to standard Wi-Fi operation, Sony's Wi-Fi Direct Mode completely bypasses your wireless router. The next time your friends want to share photos or videos from their smartphones, they can wirelessly "throw" the content straight to this TV. Also, if you download the free Media Remote™ app you can turn your iPhone®, Android™ phone or Sony Tablet™ into a versatile remote.
Reason #1: Awesome picture quality. The LED backlights in these higher-end LCD TVs can give you better picture contrast and more lifelike colors than sets with typical fluorescent backlighting. Reason #2: They're more energy-efficient than plasma or regular LCD TVs, helping you lower your monthly electric bill and helping the environment.
This Sony LED with triluminous screen delivers unbelievable clarity and WOW colors. 65 inch screen fills up my room (12 x 18) Sleek design with 2.1 speaker setup offers outstanding sound for a thin LED set.. Loads of apps (5-6 screens) through Sony Entertainment. If your not ready for 4k the triluminous display is the only one to buy, competes with plasma on realistic black color. No banding!
Pros: Great color, true blacks, great sound, very sleek attractive design, solid sturdy stand, fast processor for internet apps, new style 3d glasses that are very light weight, back of cabinet is metal not plastic, does not get hot
Cons: Heavy 93 lbs. Needs sturdy wall mount of large cabinet 64" of larger.
Nice detailed and colorful picture with new or old movies on satellite. No banding or other strange artifacts (one reason i didn't buy the last 65xbr950). This is excellent performance for such a thin TV (about 2"). I also have the 55w900 - and the picture quality is very similar - both are excellent! Sound quality is a little better than the 55w900 (highs and mids) - however, bass, dynamics and overall volume are not. it is a little better than other comparable sets (certainly not a reason to avoid this set). I bought a scratch and dent model - for the price, there is not a better value for the quality than this TV.
Pros: Excellent picture quality, including detail and color saturation. Thin - about 2".
Cons: Sound is not equal to the picture (not really a con, as others are mostly worse).
Replaced a XBR 52. We were looking at the 4K but not ready to pull the trigger on the new format due to limited availability. I have been a Sony fan for years and they continue to build a quality product......
Pros: Fast delivery, and pretty much ready to go out of the box.....
Cons: none....Sony one and only......
I was hesitant to pay so much for a TV, but after reading all the available reviews for this particular model, I decided to "pull the trigger" and buy it. Crutchfield's customer service is second to none and they took my order and set my up with 24 months no interest in about 20 minutes on the phone! I placed my order at noon Eastern time, and it shipped out Air freight the same day. It arrived in great condition only 3 days later! I cannot believe that the shipping for this big of an item was free!!!! Anyway, on to the TV itself. . . The first thing you'll notice when you set this Sony on your TV stand is just how impressive is looks just sitting there. The chrome circular base accents the black and silver color scheme very nicely. And the matte screen is a HUGE improvement over the high gloss screens of most Plasma sets! No more seeing my reflection during daytime viewing of movies and shows! I want to now cut to the chase and give you all my recommended picture settings for 2D content for this TV. Under the Custom preset I have the following settings: Backlight -Max, Picture-Max, Brightness-45, Color-53, Hue-0, Color Temp-Neutral, Sharpness-58, NR-Off, MPEG NR-Off, RealityCreation-Auto, VAD-Off, SmoothGrad-Off, MotionFlow-Off, CineMotion-Auto. In Advanced Setting I have BlackCorrector-Off, Adv.CE-Low, Gamma-0, LED DC-Low, AutoLL-Med and all other setting set to Off. Put "Speed Racer" or "Despicable Me" in your bluray player and thank me later!!!
Pros: Amazing Colors, and excellent blacks make this one of the best images that I have ever seen! I didn't realize how much I was missing out on with my old TV until I turned this baby on!!! Playing games on my Wii U look so much more vibrant and "next gen" thanks to the quality of this TV! I have no regrets thanks to Crutchfield's 60 low price guarantee, which I just used to save myself $200! Also, the 3D on this TV is great and definitely worth buying "Gravity" and "Avatar" on 3D bluray for!
Cons: For me it was how long it took to find the right settings to adjust to get the best picture possible. It just took me a lot of trial and error to get them right! Also, the picture settings for each input(including USB and Ethernet) need to be adjusted differently because of the different source material. If you use my settings as a starting point, then you should be able to get everything dialed in easier than I did. This is a CON for all TV's though, so I didn't deduct and points for it.
great picture, streams netflix perfectly and the audios not bad for a flat panel TV. I thought the shipping was great though it did take about 5 days to get here.arrived in a clean trailer with the box in perfect shape. its a winner on all accounts!
Pros: streams, the picture is beautiful and the screen isn't very reflective at all, we can watch TV with the blinds open again!
Cons: heavy! will need two people to move the box and TV., but hey...its 65 bloody inches!
What a great TV. At first we thought it would be too large for our NYC apartment, especially when the box came, but once on the wall, it looks great. Wonderful size. Also didn't think 3D would be of any interest, but watching Avatar in 3D was amazing. The depth was better than the theater and the detail was amazing. Best of all, the DVD player came free with the TV. We love this TV.
Pros: Great color, great blacks, lots of features.
Cons: Has trouble reading the DLNA network drive (LaCie) and will not read .mkv files from USB.
We purchased this TV to replace a Sony KDL-40XBR2 that remains in use in my wife's studio. Crutchfield and UPS delivered a day early, great service! This is a great TV and giant step from the old 40". Setup was easy, it has a beautiful picture, lots of control (most of which I haven't needed yet), all the new smart TV apps and it plays well with my older Yamaha AV receiver; internet connection was a snap.
I'm a little disappointed that viewing angle doesn't match that of the IPS panel in our old XBR2. But I suppose extreme viewing angle is more for bragging than anything else; I don't normally watch TV from severe angles and this picture is absolutely gorgeous from reasonable viewing angles. I'd dock this a half a star for viewing angle, but don't have that option so I'll round up and give it the 5 stars that it otherwise deserves.
Pros: Beautiful picture, easy setup, Sony quality and great Crutchfield service.
Cons: Viewing angle isn't as great as that of our old (remarkable) Sony KDL-40XBR2.
First, my experience in calling Crutchfield and speaking with an associate was a treat. My saleswoman was incredibly knowledgable about televisions and her answers (and suggestions) helped me to choose a brand, model, size and format that have proven to be perfect for my need. The store's entire communication process was exceptional, down to when UPS Freight delivered the TV to my home. VERY happy with Crutchfield for these reasons! ... The TV itself is phenomenal. I had my audio/visual guy mount it on my wall (looks fantastic!) and connect it to my Sony receiver and Sony soundbar. I have not yet played with all of the bells and whistles (there are many!), but from a novice viewer's perspective, you cannot go wrong with this TV. Big thumbs up!
Pros: Incredible picture / Intuitive interaction
I saw this set on a different web site for a cheaper price minus the Blue Ray, I didn't really need one but still it was cheaper.. After checking out their reviews I went back to Crutchfield. I have purchased with them before and always have gotten good success. I ordered it on 11/24 and got it on 11/28. It was actually suppose to get here on the 27th but UPS miss sorted it. It wasn't due until the 28th anyway. The TV is absolutely beautiful and easy to set up.The picture is very nice, better than the 52" Bravia that I had.
Pros: Easy to set up
Cons: I have none at this time.
Great TV, Excellent service!
I never write reviews but I thought this TV warranted one.
I was considering the new 65X850 4K set when I came across this one. This set, the 65W850, has all of the same features as the 4k with the exception of the resolution and the motionflow. The Triluminos display and the graphics processor are fabulous, even though it is only at 480 motionflow. And as always, ordering from Crutchfield was a pleasant experience. I got my set in 48 hours and have already cashed in on the 60-day price guarantee.
If you want a top-notch set, but don't want to splurge for 4k right now, get this TV. It's the best standard HD set I have ever seen.
Pros: Display is super sharp! Nice looking set! Menus and apps are all great and run fast.
Cons: I haven't found anything to complain about on this set yet, but if I do I will update this review.
I was one of those buyers that was debating between this one and either the Sony or Samsung 4K UHDTVs. I"m glad I went with this W850 from Sony. Amazing picture, clarity and value as 4K content is not available (only through Sony media center via downloaded content which I will not do). Also, this HDTV has the same processing chip and Triluminous color technology as the XBR 4K TVs.
Pros: Stunning picture, thin shroud/edge to edge, the default picture settings and adjustments are suitable to my eyes
Cons: The manual picture adjustments can be daunting and not the simplest interface, but it's there in case you want to fiddle with he picture. Also unlike another reviewer, the screen is really not reflective and is not an issue (at least in my family room)
I have been looking at buying a large screen TV for over a year, doing my research. I have owned two Sony TVs in the past and have always thought they had the best picture. I was about to be persuaded to change to a Samsung until I saw this TV with the new display. I could not be more pleased with the outstanding picture quality, regardless of lighting conditions in the room. The colors are very rich without being garish, and the picture literally pops off the screen. Skin tones are excellent, and the detail is amazing! I am just beginning to explore all the features of the "smart" functions, but thus far they have all worked flawlessly. The 3D is unreal, and the fact that the TV comes with 4 pair of active glasses is a huge plus. The TV is very sleek and modern looking, and the stand is a nice chrome and very sturdy. It accents the TV well.
Pros: Great picture quality; Easy to set up; exceptional detail.
Cons: None that I can find so far.
Installed in a daylight basement room. Because of the previous review I was slightly worried about the light reflection from the windows. Because I have wide slat wooden blinds installed this was not an issue for me. I mounted the TV on a wall using a Sanus model Vision Mount VMPL-3b-epandable flat panel wall mount with tilt. Under the TV I placed a Havenwood-HWNYC6432-64" wide entertainment cabinet. Installation was easy. It took about 2 hours to assemble the cabinet and mount the TV. I hooked this up to my Onkyo receiver and Definitive Technology surround system in time to watch some college football this Saturday. Very satisfying!!!. I also own a Samsung 55" LED/LCD/3D TV, but this Sony has the best picture hands down. I highly recommend these items which were all purchased from Crutchfield.
Pros: Best picture without going to the Ultra HD models.
Absolutely stunning in a dark room! With an Oppo BDP-105 Blu-Ray player, iit was almost impossible to tell the difference between this TV and the Sony 4k unit costing substantially more. This display is very reflective compared to other Sony XBR displays I have owned in the past
Pros: Stunning flesh tones great blacks for an LED
Cons: Highly reflective display is irritating in daylight or non-theater environments

Dynamic Edge LED Backlighting w/ Local Dimming: Dynamic Edge LED backlighting with local dimming delivers pitch-black night scenes and illuminates bright scenes that pop with vibrant color. Rather than illuminating the entire screen, contrast is boosted in just the right areas for a more realistic picture.
TRILUMINOS Display Technology: Unique to Sony, TRILUMINOS Display technology creates incredibly true, natural shades of colors; just the way you want them. Hard-to-reproduce reds, aqua blues, and emerald greens are displayed beautifully, so landscapes and seascapes look more vivid. Faces look better, too, with natural skin tones. It's all thanks to a new TRILUMINOS display that gives images a heightened sense of depth.
X-Reality PRO Engine: Sony's X-Reality PRO Engine lets you enjoy a vivid, lifelike picture experience by analyzing each scene pixel-by-pixel so you see sharpened images, amazing contrast, and fine detail. Blu-ray Disc movies, cable TV, satellite TV, and even Web videos each place unique demands on the processing circuits of a TV. The X-Reality PRO Engine helps get the best results from these different video sources by analyzing texture, outline, contrast, and color reproduction. The X-Reality PRO Engine will then analyze each scene pixel-by-pixel across 3-dimensions (Width, Height, and Time) and uses sophisticated pattern matching to optimize the picture, ensuring you always get the best images possible.
MotionFlow XR 480: Sony's MotionFlow XR 480 technology combines 120 frames-per-second with an advanced backlight blinking system to simulate a 480 Hz effect. MotionFlow XR 480 provides smooth and precise detail during fast-action scenes for fast action movies and sports by reducing blur caused by quick camera movements, enhancing image sharpness, and overall creating a clearer picture. You can select between various settings.
1080p Resolution: The Sony KDL-W850A series television has a HD native resolution of 1920 x 1080 (1080p). All video signals from standard definition and high definition sources are displayed at 1920 x 1080. The Sony KDL-W850A series TV is equipped with HDMI, Component, and Composite video inputs.
Note: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.
24pTrue Cinema (24p Input Capability): Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sony wisely takes advantage of this by including 24p input capability via HDMI on this television producing images that are smooth and natural looking.
MHL Compatible: The HDMI 2 input is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the TV's HDMI 2 (MHL) input using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on the Sony TV from your mobile smartphone. The TV's IR remote can be used to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Stop, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Menu navigation). Your MHL compliant device will also charge while connected to the TV's HDMI 2 input. To find MHL-certified devices, go to www.mhlconsortium.org.
Active 3D Technology: The Sony KDL-W850A series TV gives you the option to enjoy 3D (three-dimensional) pictures and graphics. You can enjoy an immersive, realistic movie and gaming experience in Full HD 1080p using the included active 3D glasses (4 pair included). Enjoy 3D content from the TV's built-in network apps, or your HDMI connected Blu-ray player, satellite receiver, or gaming console. When using the active shutter glasses, the on-screen image is precisely synchronized and delivered with the Full HD 1080p image intact, for an optimum 3D viewing experience. Sony's 3D technology displays high speed synchronized left- and right-eye images to deliver an amazing 3D experience. And since each frame you see is shown at Full HD resolution, the 3D action still offers razor-sharp detail. You can adjust the following 3D settings.
Automatic Intelligence: The TV's built-in Light Sensor automatically adjusts the picture brightness based on the amount of light in the room. As a result, you can enjoy automatic customized picture brightness and save energy without lifting a finger. The televisions Advance Contrast Enhancer (ACE) automatically adjusts backlight and contrast to the most suitable setting judging from the brightness of the screen. This setting is especially effective for dark scenes, and will increase the contrast distinction for the darker picture scenes. The ACE can be set to High, Medium, Low, or Off.
Wide Mode: The Wide Mode feature allows you to select the screen display which fits the current video image and TV screen best. Based on the original signal source, you may see black bars around the picture or just on the both sides of the screen. Sometimes you will see the picture fill the full screen.
|Wide Mode||16:9 Original Source||4:3 Original Source|
|Wide Zoom||Enlarges the picture to fill the screen with minimal distortion.||Enlarges the center portion of the 4:3 picture proportionately, while the left and right edges of the screen are stretched to fill the screen.|
|Normal||Displays a 4:3 picture in its original aspect ratio when the original source is 4:3 (available for 480i or 480p sources).||Displays the 4:3 picture in its original size with black bars at the left and right sides to fill the screen (available for 480i or 480p sources).|
|Full||Displays the picture at its original size.||Stretches the entire 4:3 picture horizontally only to fill the screen.|
|Zoom||Enlarges the picture proportionately, both vertically and horizontally.||Enlarges the entire 4:3 picture proportionately to fill the screen (useful for watching Letterbox movies).|
Automatically changes screen settings base upon incoming video signal and content.

S-Force Front Surround: S-FORCE Front Surround provides a virtual surround experience made possible using just two front speakers. Advanced Audio Settings: The TV offers additional audio adjustments to enhance the television's sound.
ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel in HDMI 1.4 enables a TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input. The audio from the TV's tuner, network connection, and USB input can pass as Dolby Digital or 2ch PCM. HDMI and analog connected devices will be output as 2ch PCM only.
Note: Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an A/V receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI IN 1 port. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.
Audio Outputs: The Sony HDTV offers analog and digital audio outputs.

The TV can be connected to your compatible PC using a hardwired Ethernet (LAN) connection or Wi-Fi connection (via built-in WiFi).
