Our take on the Sony SLT-A58K 3X Zoom Kit

by Woody Sherman
Sony

Develop your photography hobby

You don't have to be an expert photographer to use an SLR — they all offer easy automatic shooting. Because of their build quality and the physics of good glass and large sensors, even their built-in automatic settings will get you better pictures than most point-and-shoots or mobile devices. But experienced photographers and budding hobbyists can get more creative by manually adjusting settings like aperture and shutter speed. SLRs let you expand your shooting options with additional lenses and flashes to suit just about any situation. If you'd like to record the occasional video, look for a model with high-def movie mode.

The Sony Alpha SLT-A58 looks sharp

With the SLT-A58, Sony has taken some of the best features of their preceding models and paired them with a pixel-rich 20.1-megapixel sensor. In addition to resolving fine details, this sensor allows you to blow up prints to impressive sizes without softness or banding in the subtler gradations. Sony sensors are used in many cameras — even in some competitors' cameras, so it's safe to say they know a thing or two about getting them to deliver eye-catching imagery.

It's all in how you frame it

And this sensor is helpful in other ways: features like the Auto Object Framing mode use classical photographic composition concepts like the Rule of Thirds to aid you in creating the perfect cropped image from the pictures you take. Of course, if you have more pixels to work with starting out, it naturally follows that you'll have plenty of pixels for rich, detailed crops. Don't worry that the camera will be taking creative options away — if this feature is engaged, the cropped images will be stored safely alongside your originals.

Constant live-view and action-driven focus

Unlike most SLRs, this camera is always in "live view mode," which means you can see the effects of any changes you make to exposure settings before you take the shot. Its newly designed electronic viewfinder displays comprehensive shooting information, and a flexible tilting LCD screen make it easier than ever to get fantastic looking shots of a fast-moving world. And more of the action you follow will stay in focus, thanks to Sony's new "Lock-on Autofocus" feature, which dynamically adjusts the target frame based on face recognition and AF point assignment.

Capture a burst of big images

The 'A58 captures a respectable 8 frames per second in Tele-zoom cropped mode, and captures full 20-megapixel images at a rate of 5 fps. With continuous auto-focus throughout the burst, you'll be sure to get clean, dynamic shots of all the intense action in front of you. That's perfect for shots of kids and sports, neither of which are known for their predictability.

What is Translucent Mirror Technology?

The Sony SLT-A58's Translucent Mirror Technology

The Sony SLT-A58's Translucent Mirror Technology

Traditional DSLRs rely on a moving mirror that flips out of the way when you press the shutter button. When that happens, the camera momentarily loses its ability to autofocus, and your viewfinder or live view LCD screen go black at the same time — a less than desirable situation. Sony's fixed-position translucent mirror works around the problem by splitting the light coming from the lens, sending it to the camera's imaging sensor and autofocus sensor simultaneously. That means the 'A58 can continue focusing and shooting at the same time. Fast-moving subjects will always stay sharp, whether you're snapping still shots or recording full 1080/60i HD video.

One lens for all your everyday assignments

This kit includes Sony's updated 18-55mm lens. Its zoom range spans from wide-angle to short-telephoto for versatile everyday shooting. Snap indoor group shots of guests at your child's birthday party, and then follow the guests outside and capture the fun as they play games in the backyard. Add optional Sony wide angle, telephoto, and close-up lenses to expand your camera's picture-taking power even further. A quiet, fast autofocus motor specializes in keeping things sharp.

Scan the horizon

The next time you find yourself admiring a stunning mountain vista or beautiful cityscape, you can put Sony's ingenious Sweep Panorama mode to good use. It lets you capture the scene around you by sweeping the camera across your field of view — the camera automatically stitches multiple shots together to form one seamless photo.

Recording Features

Overview: The Sony SLT-A58 α (alpha series) DSLR camera kit contains the SLT-A58 camera body and the DT 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 SAM II zoom lens (SAL18552), along with a rechargeable battery, adjustable neck strap, and USB cable. The camera is compatible with Sony A-mount lenses.

Translucent Mirror Technology: The A58 features Translucent Mirror Technology, which directs light to both the image sensor and the Phase Detection AF sensor simultaneously. This allows the camera to focus and capture the image at the same time. Since the mirror never moves, the time needed to raise and lower the mirror is eliminated.

Tiltable 2.7" LCD Screen: The A58 uses a 2.7" TFT Clear Photo LCD screen with 460,000 dots. The brightness of the LCD monitor can be adjusted in 5 steps from -2 to +2. The LCD monitor can be tilted downward 45°to frame high-angle shots, and upward 90° to frame low-angle shots.

0.39" Electronic Viewfinder: The 0.39" high contrast SVGA OLED Tru-Finder electronic color viewfinder has 1,440,000 dots, and provides approximately 100% field of view. The built-in diopter lets you adjust the viewfinder image to your individual eyesight. If you're using the electronic viewfinder to frame your shots, the LCD turns off automatically when you bring the camera up to your eyes.

Display Options: You can choose how much information appears in the viewfinder and LCD monitor. There are three options: Display all information, No display information, and Graphic Display. The Graphic Display shows the shutter speed and aperture values as graphs.

Live View: The A58's Live View lets you use the LCD screen and Electronic Viewfinder to frame your photos as you shoot. The Live View image will provide an accurate preview of your photo, including the white balance, focus, depth of field, exposure, and framing. In addition, the on-screen displays will keep you informed on all your settings and recording information.

Image Sensor: The SLT-A58 features an APS-C-sized Exmor HD CMOS image sensor (23.2 x 15.4mm). It has approximately 20.4-million total pixels and 20.1-million effective pixels.

Still Image Recording Formats: Still images are recorded in JPEG file format in Standard and Fine compression rates. You can choose to shoot in 3:2 or 16:9 aspect ratio, and in large, medium, and small image sizes. You can also record still images using the RAW format, which is uncompressed with no processing performed in the camera. RAW images must be transferred to a computer for processing, editing, and printing using the supplied Image Data Converter SR software. You can select the following image sizes:

  • 3:2 Large: 5456 x 3632 (20M)
  • 3:2 Medium: 3872 x 2576 (10M)
  • 3:2 Small: 2736 x 1824 (5M)
  • 16:9 Large: 5456 x 3064 (17M)
  • 16:9 Medium: 3872 x 2176 (8.4M)
  • 16:9 Small: 2736 x 1536 (4.2M)
  • RAW: 5456 x 3632 (3:2) or 5456 x 3064 (16:9)

Panorama Photos: The 3D Sweep Panorama mode lets you record panoramic images by holding down the shutter button as you pan across the scene. Panoramic photos can be taken in several different resolution settings:

  • Standard:
    • Vertical: 3872 x 2160
    • Horizontal: 8192 x 1856
  • Wide:
    • Vertical: 5536 x 2160
    • Horizontal: 12416 x 1856

Movie Recording Formats: The A58 can record 16:9 Full High Definition movies with MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video and 2-channel Dolby Digital audio. Movies can also be recorded in MP4 mode with MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video and MPEG-4 AAC-LC 2-channel audio. You can select from the following bit rates/image quality:

File Format Average Bit Rate Resolution
AVCHD 60i 24M (FX) 24 Mbps 1920 x 1080 (60i)
AVCHD 60i 17M (FH) 17 Mbps 1920 x 1080 (60i)
AVCHD 24p 24M (FX) 24 Mbps 1920 x 1080 (24p)
AVCHD 24p 17M (FH) 17 Mbps 1920 x 1080 (24p)
MP4 1440 x 1080 12M 12 Mbps 1440 x 1080
MP4 VGA 3M 3 Mbps 640 x 480

Dual Media Options: The A58 camera accepts two types of media for capturing still images: Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo, and Memory Stick XC-HG Duo, plus SD, SDHC, and SDXC Memory Cards. The maximum number of images that can be recorded on a memory card formatted with this camera varies slightly between the two types of media.

Clear Image Zoom: Clear Image Zoom, powered by Sony's By Pixel Super Resolution Technology, increases the effective focal length of the lens by up to 2x by digitally magnifying the center of the image.

SteadyShot INSIDE In-Camera Image Stabilization: The SteadyShot INSIDE in-camera image stabilizer shifts the image sensor to compensate for camera shake without sacrificing image quality. The compensation effect is equal to 2 to 4.5 shutter speed steps, giving you more creative freedom when shooting in low light. And, because it is integrated into the camera body, SteadyShot INSIDE technology works with all compatible α (alpha) system lenses.

Eye-Start Auto Focus: The camera features the Eye-Start Auto Focus system, which begins precision auto focus adjustments the moment you raise the camera to your eye. This feature can be turned off in the menu, if desired.

15-Point AF System: The A58's high-performance auto focus system uses 15 focus points with 3 cross-sensors to deliver fast and precise focusing. It has a predictive focus control to automatically calculate the position of fast-moving subjects. You can choose from the following Auto/Manual Focus Modes:

  • AF (Auto focus) Mode: You can select between 3 modes:
    • Single-Shot AF: The camera focuses and the focus is locked when you press the shutter button halfway down.
    • Continuous AF: The camera continues to focus while the shutter button is pressed and held halfway down.
    • Automatic AF: This mode automatically switches between single-shot AF and continuous AF depending on the movement of the subject.
  • AF (Auto focus) Area: You can select between 3 settings:
    • Wide: The camera determines which of the 15 AF areas is used in focusing.
    • Zone: You can choose the zone for which you want to activate the focus from among left, right, or center.
    • Spot: The camera uses the AF area located in the center area exclusively.
    • Local: You can choose a local focus area from the 15 areas using the controller.
  • Manual Focus: When it is difficult to get the proper focus in auto focus mode, you can adjust the focus manually. This mode allows you to set the distance of a subject by switching to MF on the lens and rotating the focusing ring to achieve a sharp focus.

Face Detection/Smile Shutter: The camera can detect human faces, and adjusts the focus, exposure, performs image processing and adjusts flash settings for best results. Faces can be registered, and priority given to those faces over others in the frame. Up to 8 faces can be detected and/or registered. When the Smile Shutter feature is enabled, the camera will automatically release the shutter when a slight, normal, or big smile is detected.

Focus Lock: If a subject is off-center and outside of the AF area, you can lock the focus of the camera.

AF Illuminator: When you press the shutter button halfway down a red illuminator is emitted until the focus is locked. Under dark lighting conditions or when you shoot a low contrast subject, the AF illuminator allows the camera to focus more easily on the subject.

Drive Modes: The camera offers the following shooting modes:

  • Single Shooting: Default setting for standard picture taking.
  • Continuous Shooting: At full 20.1MP resolution, the camera can record up to 5 frames per second (High) or 2.5 fps (Low). Tele-zoom Continuous Advanced Priority shooting captures the center portion of the image sensor (5MP) and can record up to 8 fps continuously.
  • Self-Timer: You can set the camera to two different self-timers:
    • 10 Second: After you press the shutter button, the shutter will be released about 10 seconds later. This is convenient when the photographer wants to appear in a photo.
    • 2 Second: After you press the shutter button, the shutter will be released about 2 seconds later. This is convenient to reduce camera-shake.
  • Bracket Shooting: Bracket shooting allows you to shoot 3 images, each with different degrees of exposure. When Single Bracket is selected, the shutter button is pressed for each shot one-by-one. White Balance Bracket shooting lets you record three images, each with the white balance shifted.
  • Remote Commander: You can shoot using the optional RM-VPR1 Remote Control with Multi-Terminal cable. Using the remote control reduces camera shake and continues the exposure without pressing and holding the shutter button.

Shooting Modes: The top-mounted Mode Dial lets you select from the following shooting modes:

  • iAuto (Intelligent Auto): This mode allows easy shooting with settings adjusted automatically.
  • Flash Off: Same as Intelligent Auto, but without use of the flash.
  • iAuto+ (Superior Auto): The camera recognizes and evaluates the shooting condition and sets the appropriate settings automatically. The camera saves one appropriate image by combining or separating images as necessary.
  • Scene Selection: You can select an appropriate mode for the subject or the shooting conditions to allow you to shoot the image with a suitable setting for the subject: Portrait, Sports Action, Macro, Landscape, Sunset, Night Scene, Hand-held Twilight, and Night Portrait.
  • Sweep Panorama: Shoot expansive scenery or high-rise buildings with dynamic composition.
  • Picture Effect: You can select the following effect filters to achieve more impressive and artistic expression: Toy Camera, Pop Color, Posterization, Retro Photo, Soft High-key, Partial Color, High Contrast Mono, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-tone Mono, and Miniature.
  • Tele-zoom Continuous Priority: The camera records images continuously while the shutter button is pressed down, up to a maximum of about 8 images per second.
  • Movies: Recording movies in Full HD or standard definition in 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio.
  • Program Auto: For shooting with the exposure adjusted automatically (both the shutter speed and the aperture value), while allowing you to adjust other settings manually.
  • Aperture Priority: This mode allows you to shoot after adjusting the aperture value manually, letting the camera set the appropriate shutter speed. This mode gives you greater control over the depth of field.
  • Shutter Speed Priority: This mode allows you to shoot after adjusting the shutter speed manually, letting the camera set the appropriate aperture. With a high shutter speed, the moving subject appears as if it is frozen on the image. With a slow shutter speed, the moving subject appears as if it were flowing.
  • Manual Exposure: This mode allows you to shoot after adjusting the exposure (shutter speed and aperture) manually.

Exposure Compensation: Exposure compensation is used to alter the camera's standard exposure setting. You can make the image look lighter (increased exposure) or darker (decreased exposure). The exposure compensation amount can be set up to +/-3.0 EV in 1/3-step increments.

AE Lock: You can fix the exposure before deciding on the composition when taking a picture. This is effective when the metering object and focusing object are different or when you want to shoot continuously while keep the same exposure value.

Metering Mode: A 1200-zone evaluative sensing system provides multi-pattern measuring for superior exposure control accuracy in a wide range of lighting conditions. You can select the method for measuring the brightness of a subject from the following three methods:

  • Multi Segment: This method uses the whole screen divided into 1200 zones to measure light.
  • Center Weighted: While emphasizing the central area of the screen, this method measure the average brightness of the entire screen.
  • Spot: This method measure light only in the spot metering circle in the center of the frame.

White Balance: You can adjust the color tones according to the lighting conditions. You can choose from the following WB options, and adjust the +/- 3 to fine tune the colors: Auto WB, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Incandescent, Fluorescent (Warm White), Fluorescent (Cool White), Fluorescent (Day White), Fluorescent (Daylight), Flash, Color Temperature, Color Filter, and Custom.

Color Temperature/Color Filter: You can adjust the white balance further by selecting Color Temperature or Color Filter in the Custom White Balance option. With Color Temperature, the higher the number, the more reddish the image, and the lower the number, the more bluish the image. Color Filter achieves the effect of Color Compensation filters for photography. Based on the set color temperature as the standard, the color can be compensated to Green (G) or Magenta (M).

ISO Settings: ISO is a unit of measurement of sensitivity to light. The larger the number, the higher the sensitivity. The camera's ISO can be set manually or automatically, depending upon the exposure mode. The ISO range is 100 to 16000.

Built-in Flash: In a dark location, using the built-in flash, or optional external flash, allows you to shoot the subject brightly, and it also helps prevent blurred photos due to camera shake. The SLT-A58 features a pop-up flash, and an accessory shoe for attaching an optional external flash. The range of the built-in flash depends on the ISO sensitivity and aperture value. The overall flash range is 3.3' to 32.8'. The A58 offers the following flash modes: Auto-flash, Fill-flash, Slow Sync, Rear Sync, Wireless (with optional external flash), and Flash Off.

Microphone Input: The A58 has a 3.5mm mini-jack microphone input for use with an external microphone.

Noise Reduction: The camera offers Long Exposure and High ISO Noise Reduction (NR) to automatically reduce the grainy noise found in photos during long exposures or high ISO settings. You can also select Multi Frame Noise Reduction when shooting multiple images continuously.

Anti-Dust Technology: Changing lenses in a DSLR can allow dust to enter the camera. To help keep the image sensor cleaner for better pictures, the A58 utilizes a static-free anti-dust coating on the imager's filter. The camera also has a cleaning function which vibrates the image sensor for a short time to knock off any dust that may have settled on the imager.

Play And Print Functions

Playback Options: You can view images on the LCD monitor with 3 options: with recording data displayed, without recording data, or histogram display. A histogram is the luminance distribution that shows how many pixels of a particular brightness exists in a picture.

Auto Review: After an image is recorded, you can have the camera automatically display it on the LCD monitor for two, five or 10 seconds. You can also turn off auto review.

Image Rotation: Vertical shots can be rotated automatically so that they are displayed upright during playback. This can be done manually or automatically.

Folder Select: Files are divided into three folders for playback: Still Images, MP4 Movies, and AVCHD Movies.

Playback Screen: You can view your photos back as a single image on the LCD monitor, as an Index or as a Slide Show. During Index View mode, you can view 4 or 9 images at once. You can adjust the Slide Show mode interval from 1, 3, 5, 10, or 30 seconds.

D-Range Optimizer/Auto HDR: The camera allows you to correct the brightness and contrast of an image automatically, using the D-Range Optimizer (DRO) and Auto High Dynamic Range functions. The DRO optimizes the gradations of a recorded image in each area of the image; you select the optimal level from Lv1 (weak) and Lv5 (strong). When Auto HDR is selected, the camera shoots three images with different exposures, then overlays them to create one image with the correct exposure and an overlaid image.

Sony slt A58

Written By PD, Maine on Friday, February 21, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Did quite a bit of research before buying this camera. Bought and returned a Sony SLT A37. Grip was too small for me and the Exposure Bracketing only went plus/minus .7EV. I do a lot of software processed HDR and you need at least plus/minus 2 to work effectively. The A57 goes plus/minus 3. I also found the buttons easier to access on the A57 in particular the Exposure compensation, the AE lock and the ISO. All 3 of these buttons can be easily reached with your right thumb or index finger. The tilting LCD is enough for me. I mainly need the LCD to tip up and down and it does this just fine. The tilt/swivel on the more expensive is not really necessary unless you're into selfies. The image quality is a real step up from my last camera (a Pentax 12Meg KX). I really like the fact that what you see in the viewfinder is exactly what you're going to record for the image. Finally don't be put off by the plastic lens mount. There's metal behind the plastic that does most of the work. Besides most kit lenses sold with cameras have a plastic mount.
Pros:
Good Ergonomics, Lightweight, Great Value, Excellent image quality
Cons:
Not the fastest burst speed in it's class. Only shoe mount TTL flashes available are expensive Sony's.

SONY Alpha SLT a58

Written By SONYGUY, Upstate, NY on Sunday, July 14, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My new SONY a58 SLT is my "everyday" camera. Compared to my a77, it is slower and has fewer features, but I expected that with the price difference between my a77 and my a58. I do like the Electronic Viewfinder, the 20+ megapixel sensor is a nice change from the a57 and the 18-55mm SAM II lens is tack sharp and fast to focus (seems better than the 18-55mm SAM I that I already own). Bravo to SONY for all of that. I do regret that the LCD isn't more articulated than it is, the LCD is smaller than the predecessor, the a57, and the camera lens-mount area is plastic, not metal. That being said, the LCD size is NOT horrible, the LCD hinged movement is better than the old stationary LCDs and the plastic lens mount may do a better job of resisting the warping that can befall a metal ring. Time will tell on that matter. All-in-all, not a bad beginner SLR/SLT for someone moving up from a point and shoot or someone with a monster (like the a77) who also wants to own a smaller/lighter/cheaper APS-C camera that is appropriate for daily use. This is a good camera for that application - not sure I'd be looking to shoot a wedding with it. I would really give it a 4.5/5 if half-points were an option.
Pros:
Cheap. Lightweight. New 18-55mm SAM II (version 2) lens. 20+ megapixel sensor.
Cons:
Less than 3" LCD screen. LCD not fully articulated. Plastic lens mount (may or may not be a con - time will tell).

2 questions already asked

I'm looking for a SLT or mirrorless camera that is good for general shooting, but a slight emphasis on sports photography (indoor Special Olympics Basketball and Swimming, for example). I have an older Lumix suoer zoom P&S that falls apart at iso above 800 tops, and fast shutter speeds but otherwise takes great pix. Will the A58 or A77 give me upper level consumer (not pro) level results for casual sports phtography? Thanks in advance. Tom [ Tom_O  Jan 07, 2014 ]
2 answers
  • Works reasonably well for indoor basketball with the 55-200 lens I also bought. It's lightyears ahead of my old Panasonic superzoom, but I now know why sports photogs use 3000 lenses on 1000 dollar cameras. Overall I'm quite pleased with the camera. A great introduction to DSLR and how to fine tune manual settings. Could a full frame A7 be in my future? Maybe . . . I'll practice on this one for a while first. [ Tom_O   Jan 25, 2014 ]

Hi, I am considering this camera after reading many things on compatability with my favorite old Minolta Maxxum AF Zoom 70-210. I don't fully understand the info. Can I us my old lens? Please tell me specifically if I would need any adapters or specifically if I would need to change any camera settings to make my old lens work. Thanks. [ joan  Dec 12, 2013 ]
2 answers
  • Sony acquired Minolta some time back. No adapters are needed, the old Maxxum lenses use the same A-mount as does Sony. [ KEVIN   Dec 12, 2013 ]
  • Hi Joan: I owned a Sony A33L and A55L, and was able to use my Minolta SLR lenses with these Sony DSLR cameras. They are completely compatible. I am also using them with no problems on my SLT-A58K. They do not require any adapters or special settings for them to attach and work properly on Sony DSLR cameras. Sony bought Minolta almost 10 years ago and incorporated a lot of the features Minolta had already developed into their current line of DSLR cameras. Certain models of Minolta External Shoe Mount Flashes will also work properly in eTTL mode and Manual mode on Sony DSLR cameras as well. [ WESLEY   Dec 12, 2013 ]
