Make simple use of this player

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like this DVD player, although it seems to have been discontinued. If you're thinking of buying it second hand, just consider this: the remote lacks an eject button. Some may not care, but I loved that in my normal DVD player. I could hit eject, and grab the disc without having to bend down to hit a button, and open & close the tray. On this one, you can't do that.

I ordered this because I was looking for a Netflix streaming device. For a little more than a Roku box, this device is awesome. I love it, and my family loves it. I wish it had wifi, but I didn't need it, so I didn't want to pay for it. I would suggest this player to anyone. I can't imagine that one twice the price is any better.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sony's user interface has typically been very good but this one could use some work. Sony could have put fewer options on the main screen rather than try to put too much on there. Sony does a good job at excepting pretty much any type of disc. This is a great option for those of you who like to burn their own discs. I brought two of these units and one of them ate one of my discs and wouldn't give it back. I followed all the directions in the manual but could not get the player to spit it out. Crutchfield was great, they replaced the unit and managed to get my disc back.

Lame Firmware for region free discs

Written by: John from Stamford, CT on June 21, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The BD player works well with discs coded for its region. Region free discs are supposed to be capable of being played on any player irrespective of the player's region code. When I tried to play BD LIFE from the UK, a region free BD, I learned that most, if not all of Sony BD players for North America cannot handle discs recorded at 50Hz field or frame rates. Other manufacturers' BD players, even very inexpensive ones, have no problem playing region free BD recorded at any field frequencies. It took me hours trying to get the disc to play, and nearly an hour on the phone with Sony Technical Support. Shame on lame Sony for not updating it's firmware to handle 50Hz for region free discs. For this I am tempted to give Sony's N460 1 star, but I'll be generous and give it 3.

Solid Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this player for a few weeks and I've been very impressed with it. I have it set up with wired internet for streaming movies via netflex etc. It performs well, and the user interface is very intuitive. Some commented it spins up blu-ray movies slowly but I've not noticed that. With the exception of a few minor comments I'll make below, I'd give it a solid 8 out of 10 across the board: 1. Netflix - Only allows you to access your instant queue, not browse for movies. A minor inconvenience since most of what netflix offers for streaming is old movies anyway. 2. Sometimes lags during streaming moves from netflix or amazon. This never happens on my xbox, so I'm convinced it's the Sony hardware. It is pretty minor and only happens mabye once per movie. 3. I wish there was a way to download/cache netflix or Amazon content on a local drive and play it from there. It would eliminate teh concern of #2 above and ensure I always see HD quality instead of letting my current network latency affect it. Overall, a solid device and well worth the money. I have no complaints at all.

What more could you ask for? A thin device that packs it all. Blu-ray, multiple format DVD/CD capabilities that deliver great sound and picture, and an easy internet connection that allows you to watch your Netflix movies online, YouTube, Amazon or just connect to a variety of other video and music sites for high quality listening. If i had to complain about something...Even with hard wiring to a broadband connection it seems a little slower than usual to connect to and buffer a song or movie, but once it does, it plays them beautifully.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's my first Blu-Ray so I don't have anything to compare it to. But so far it loads pretty fast on Blu-ray discs and instant on DVDs. I love all of the features and watched my first Netflix download last night and it was SWEET. It took a couple of trips back and forth to the computer to activate it but it was worth while. I installed an outlet and connected via lan cable to my router I figured I'd get better bandwidth that way anyhow. BUT the real great benefit of this machine is ordering from, and having the support of Crutchfield behind me. They have really impressed me with their support and follow up and willingness to help with anything.

BDP-N460 - a great first Blu-Ray player!

Written by: Christopher from Pennsylvania on March 3, 2010

I bought the Sony BDP-N460 for Black Friday 2009 - at that time it was $249. Now it's a screaming deal. I originally was looking at its wireless-capable big brother, the BDP-S560. However it didn't stream Netflix, and the N460 does. So, a popular solution was to pick up a Linksys WET610N wireless bridge. A great combo. I really love the N460, it performs very very well. I had a standard DVD player for years, pluggin' away paired to a 27" Panasonic tube TV. I now have a 50" Panasonic plasma in 1080p, and my wife and I are blown away. The picture is beautiful, but more so the audio! Boston Acoustics CR-series separates, towers up front, and a Denon AVR-685 somewhat older receiver, for us. Everything is great! Very happy with this Sony. In a few years we'll probably upgrade to something fancier, but for now I'm extremely pleased. I will agree with other reviewers, in that it loads discs slowly... but it doesn't bother me. Not had it long enough to experience any issues, but hopefully none will come up!

Everything worked right away. Fast load times. Connected to the internet with no problems. I haven't tried the downloadable content because I haven't hooked up a USB drive yet. How hard would it have been to include 1 GB of internal memory for that? Also puzzled at why they don't include an HDMI cable. Other than that, very happy with the player so far.

TV Specs: Sony KD-34XBR960. A 1080i CRT that's amazing. I have been unable to get the TV and BRt o "talk" to one another via HDMI. I have used Sony's online & phone support, and searched the internet for help. Nothing has worked. Interestingly, the player plays fine via component and once the movie is playing I can switch over to HDMI and it works fine. Weird. The Player: Ease of setup was smooth and simple. My first BR player, load up times seem relatively fast based on reviews for other players. Picture is outstanding. Internet streaming is great! VIA hard connection; Netflix and Slacker work awesome! My only complaint is the HDMI connection. I have tested the player on a newer tv, and it works fine via HDMI. Crutchfield customer service has been supportive, sending me another player to give that a try, but no luck. Sony told me to buy a new TV. My CRT is only 5.5 yrs old and was the top of the line for its time. They were not interested in troubleshooting my issue beyond what was in their guide. Unexceptable Sony! Every other HDMI device I have plays fine on my TV. Why these 2 are not talking is still a mystery. I have tried everything short of having a tech come out to go over both machines. My last theory is the player wants to display in 1080p despite my manual overrides in the video setup menu. Ignoring my HDMI issue this BRP has been great. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it. I am dissapointed in Sony's Customer Service but Crutchfield has been great!

Not too long winded here but... it plays fine. I just wish it had a "resume" feature. Personally I would have rathered spent a couple of more bucks for one that did. By the time you get a new system, get furniture for it, get it unboxed and hooked up and then set up, the 30 days are gone.

This is our first Blu-ray, though we tried the Samsung first with no success. With the Cisco Linksys wireless and HDMI connections, the Sony works flawlessly. We could not be more pleased with the purchase and the support we experienced from Crutchfield.

I bought this as a replacement to the Samsung 3600 (had two of those fail on me). I just installed this Sony yesterday. It has an easy setup feature that worked well. I added a Wi-Fi bridge to bring ethernet to the player, and once I got the it configured, the Sony picked up the network and the internet easily. The Sony accessed the web and ran a software update that worked well, and that brought in all the extras like Netflix, YouTube, and about 7-8 other "widgets". No Pandora (which we had used a lot on the dead Samsung) but there are other music widgets that may function similarly, I haven't had time to use them. The picture is great, all features and functions work well, the physical setup on the unit (buttons etc.) is much better than the Samsung. Very pleased so far. Would give it five stars if it had Wi-Fi built in, and a few improvements in the software so that I could program our remote (Harmony) to "watch a Netflix movie" with one touch.

Sony BDP-N460

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not sure what's to say. I've owned the original Sony BDP-S1 player since it was released, so have been doing the BluRay thing for a while now. They are both slow to load, but once up and running there's absolutely NOTHING that comes close to BluRay for stunning PQ; not HD DVD, HD satellite, upscaled DVD or you-name-it. Do yourself a favor and go BluRay. As for the BDP-N460, it works well, the menu is easy to use, and given that it streams internet content seems like a steal at this price. I paid $1000 for the original BDP-S1, so the idea of getting more functionality for 1/4 of the price blows my mind. And yes, BluRay discs cost more to purchase, but if you rent from N---X (don't know if name dropping is OK here), the price is the same as DVD rentals. So hurry up and buy this player!

My first stand alone player. It came free with a TV. I had no expectations, but its a cool little player, really light weight, feels cheap, but looks great. Streaming audio and video are cool features, but I doubt it I really utilize them. I only gave it 4 stars because my PS3 loads movies a bit faster. All and all good product.
