My first blue-ray player

Written By Brian, Fort Worth, TX on Thursday, April 16, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This being my fiorst blue-ray player it is hard for me to review it. But I will say the load time is not at all bad and it plays both DVDs & blueray disc with exceptional quality on my Toshiba 46 in TV.

Great when it played

Written By showen, S.F. Bay Area on Friday, February 20, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The picture was great on our Bravia 42;" the Bravia sync was easy, and I got used to the player load times; I even connected an ethernet cable from the player to my router to get the firmware updates more quickly. However, after four months we had to return the item. The problem started a month ago when it would not play a brand new blu-ray disc I purchased. I thought it was the disc and had that replaced. But then, the player would not recognize blu-ray discs from Hollywood Video and Netflix. Cleaning the discs did not help. Crutchfield customer service is great as ever and I'm waiting for a replacement.

Excellent Value

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Is there a reason to pay more for a blu-ray player? I haven't found one but I'm sure there are those who may need to play THX Certified sound tracks but this model has a built in surround sound decoder that satisfies my sound needs. I'm using mine coupled via HDMI to a Toshiba 32RV530U Regza 32" 1080p LCD HDTV and I am totally satisfied (and tickled too) with the quality and sound output of this Sony player. No confusing programming, simple design, out of the box connected and playing within 15 minutes. Video upconversion for improved quality and they include an ethernet network port for future firmware updates. To me those are features worth having.

A Very Good Deal

Written By Francesca, Chicago, IL on Sunday, February 15, 2009

Like most Sony products, this is a fine piece of equipment. It is so compact and lightweight that I was able to install it in a half shelf space in my stereo cabinet. The picture and sound quality and stability have been excellent. Getting the player as a Crutchfield 'Open Box' deal even solved the one consistent problem Sony has these days, which is very high prices for their products.
However, one thing I wish I had known before ordering is that the unit has *no* slow motion playback capability, neither forward nor reverse. Instead it has forward and backward 'jump replay' buttons, which I find useless. If you are the kind of person who looks for details of sports plays or nuances in movie scenes by slo-moing, then this is *not* the player for you.

I received this player for Christmas 2008. It was easy to hook up, update firmware, and use. We have it hooked up to a 73" DLP television and a home theater receiver. The picture and sound are the best I have seen.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received the player quickly in excellent condition, even before Christmas. The difference in quickness of loading the dvd from the standard player to the blu-ray disc player takes some getting used to. Having watched a standard dvd in high def is something to behold. It's as though we had never seen the movie before with all the detail now available. Very pleased and would highly recomend. Crutchfiled is terrific in support and sales.

A Good Choice

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had my BDP-S350 since September. It has proven itself to be a good performer and trouble free. It offers good picture quality and a small footprint which I do like. Load time is good, and the menu is easy enough to get the unit set up as it should be or to one's liking. All in all, it has shown itself to be a nice addition to my H/T system. Recommended.

Beautiful Picture! I purchased this from Crutchfield with my new 46" LCD flat screen Bravia TV and what a gorgeous pair...this has got to be one of the most beautiful pictures you can get, and even regular DVDs look great on it. Does not really take much time to load up and remote works great. I would recommend this to anyone...it is well worth the money...buy it!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After researching candidtate players for over three months, I finally decided on Sony's BDP-S350 and am delighted that I did. From the time I opened the box to the first viewing of a BD took less than 20 minutes! All it took was an HDMI connection to my HDTV and an optical audio link to my receiver - presto! A glorious high definiton picture accompanied by terrific sound! Player startup was quick, menus easy to navigate, and results outstanding! The same evening, I downloaded and installed the Sony firmware update so I now have the latest S350 capabilities available.
I highly recommend this BD player to anyone seeking excellent value for their A/V dollar!

Good but lacking...

Written By Jonathan, Montgomery, AL on Thursday, January 22, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great player. Easy to setup and use. Loads quickly especially with the update. However, I have two issues that I didn't think would matter when I purchased it, but now they do.

1. No slow motion. My regular dvd player had it and I loved it. Just took it for granted.

2. Does not resume play where you left off if you remove the disk. This feature again was on my last dvd player. I LOVED this feature. You could resume exactly where you left off even several movies later! I was spoiled by it and now it is a letdown that the 350 doesnt have it.

If you can deal without these two features, this is an excellent player!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the second blue ray I have bought the first was a Samsung 1400. I got this Sony BDP-S350 for my inlaws and I was impressed with how fast it loaded the dvd. I think there getting faster. I also updated it by just hooking up a RJ45 cable from my router and the updating went fine. I was impressed with how easy it was. Updates do take a while so patience is needed and don't turn off your machine just let it do its thing. Once you watch a movie on a blu-ray....

Blue ray player

Written By Mark, KY on Thursday, January 22, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This blue ray player is great except for one thing. Like all Blue Ray players it does NOT support THX. This means for all those THX surroud sound movies that don't have another 5.1 type audio track recorded blue ray players give you old stereo sound. They don't even have the option to output the THX sound for your stereo to produce. So basically this player is great but you will have to keep a cheep standard dvd player around if you want good sound from anything THX.

No need to go to the theater anymore...

Solid product at a fair price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this item on Crutchfield, at that price it was hard to pass up. I looked at the S550, but since the major difference is it's support of analog audio outputs which I didn't need, I saved a few dollars and went with the S350. Installation was no problem, and the unit has performed fine. Very compact and light, fits anywhere it needs to.

While Blu-ray DVDs do look better than up scaled normal DVDs, the quality difference is not huge. It's not like after you watch a Blu-ray DVD you never want to go back to a non Blu-ray DVD, they are still acceptible, just slightly lower level of clarity etc.

It takes a while for the unit to power up. I experimented with the option that allows a faster power up (essentially keeps the unit powered in a standby mode), but that used electricity and generated heat, so didn't seem worth it considering I only play 1 to 2 DVDs a week. Not really that big a deal waiting 30 or more seconds after powering on, but some may find it annoying.

Was disappointed when I was researching a Blu-ray player to see that this one didn't support MP3 discs. Almost went with another unit, but decided the other positives of the Sony outweighed that negative. Audio quality on normal audio CDs has been fine, no negatives there.

Connected the unit to the internet and it downloaded the firmware update with no problem, process was painless and enabled BD-Live support.

smaller than most players this fits in with other components in my center easily. loadings a bit slow somtimes but that may be do to all the info on the discs. out of the box and hooked to my digital tv and sound system in a few minutes using all digital and hd hook ups. have yet to conect to internet for any update or to use the flash drive function but look forward to using those benafits soon. also on top of all that save $60 and free ship threw crutchfield.

Blu-Ray Technology still clunky?

Written By Jeffrey, Ronkonkoma, NY on Friday, January 16, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this player along with a Sony 52V4100 LCD TV. The output of the player is excellent but I am disappointed with the slowness of loading and restarting a DVD, and the fast forward/reverse motion. Press the eject to put in a DVD and you will wait 30 seconds for the tray to open. This may be a current limitation of Blu-ray technology rather than the player. Overall though, I am happy with the quality of the player and its price. As always, Crutchfield was great.

The Sony Blu Ray BDP-S350 certainly has lived up to the hype. The picture
and sound quality are awesome in HD and Dolby DTS.
The remote can be awkward and takes some getting used to, and there is
an upload pause when first playing back, but overall an awesome product
that is more lightweight and slimmer than my Toshiba HD player.

Great for the money

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Player boots quickly and picture is amazing. The only thing I would change (so far) is that this player doesn't remember last position of the disc if you eject. Disc dirty and skipping or won't play? Take it out, clean it, then you have to search to where you were. My old Sony DVD player remembers the last 40 discs inserted; I'll really miss that feature and find it quite annoying. It does remember however, if you stop the player and turn it off, it will restart at the point where you left off.

Another Great Sony Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Plugged in the HTMI cable, the wall plug and a network cable to my router and in less than 5 minutes out of the box it was downloading the latest software automatically. I haven't wired it to my sound system yet, but the sound and picture on our Sony 60 inch TV is outstanding. Even home videos that would sometimes hang on our Panasonic DVD player run flawlessly on this player. Would highly reccomend this player.
As usual Crutchfields service was also outstanding. I ordered it late Monday, it shipped the same day and arrived early Thursday (typical of other products we've purchased from Crutchfield).

Been looking at upgrading to blue ray to feed my 46" XBR6 LCD. This player did not disappoint. Blue ray looks awesome but the big surprise is how well it up-converts my current DVD collection. This is a big plus with the limited selection of blue-ray discs. Very pleased with this purchase and Crutchfields service.

Excellent Picture

Written By Shaun, East Grand Forks, MN on Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit has a great picture and only a few minor complaints. Out of the box, the unit does not support BD-Live (movie downloads from Netflix). You must first download a system update (which still didn't give me that feature because it's not ready yet). If you want to make use of the USB port on back, you need a narrow little USB drive....or a short USB extension cord. Sony made sure to make the USB port deeply recessed and they conveniently sell a small USB drive to fit this unit.....(dirty, sneaky). One last thing, this unit is rather slow to boot. Once you select your DVD for playback....it 'thinks' for a while before getting the DVD's main page loaded. After that point, the unit works great and playback is just as it should be......I like the unit and would recommend it, I have not used any other Blu-Ray players, so I can't compare!

Smoking Blu-ray

Written By six4g, Chesapeake, VA on Tuesday, November 11, 2008

I am absolutely pleased with this purchase. I purchased the BDP-S350 through the Scratch and Dent store and after thorough inspection have yet to find the scratch or the dent. So price wise it was already a steal. As for the performance, I have yet to find anything to even remotely complain about. Picture quality is great, even appears to improve the quality of some of my older DVD's. There was a seamless integration with my Sony XBR-2 LCD television. Setup was quick and painless. HDMI is a beautiful thing. This purchase has allowed me to move my PS3 back into its position in the family "game" room. Sony just rocks!

Highly Recommend

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sony Blu-ray Disc player is everything my family and I hoped it would be. We upgraded to this model from a DVD upconverting model. Our DVD collection looks amazing on this unit and the sound is unbelievable!

On our first BD movie night, I had our receiver set to our usual settings and expected the usual great sound we had been enjoying. When the movie began, however, I jumped in my seat and had to quickly adjust the sound.

My only fear with this new format is that I will find the need to purchase already-owned movies in BD. It could get expnsive!

Great player but.....

Written By Tim, Elkhart, IN on Sunday, November 02, 2008

This is the first blu-ray player I purchased and had decided on the sony because of all the positive reviews for this model. I purchased this and rented 10,000 BC as my first blue-ray movie to watch. It started fast, not as fast as a regular dvd player but with much more data to read, it is a very reasonable start up time. With the anynet connection my tv automatically switched to the blue ray player and the movie started with no problems. The first thing I noticed was how AWESOME the picture looked on my samsung 52" LCD tv. High Def is truely amazing! Playing around with the remote I realized I couldn't figure out how to slow-mo the picture. Investigating this "problem" I learned on sony's website that this feature is not supported on the 350 or the 550 players. It is supported on the 300 and 500 player. Why did Sony do away with this basic feature? This for me is a big dissappointment. I like watching a lot of action movies and hit slow mo on the action scenes. This player would be a great player for the price but for me really needs the slow mo feature.

Great Value. Great Product.

This is not only was my first Blu-Ray player I've purchased, but also the first purchase from Crutchfield I've made in many years. I've heard many good things about Crutchfield over the years but was always either buying on price or instant gratification (at retail). I can't say enough good things about this purchase from the speed it was delivered to all the little things they do (the labels, the hook-up guide, etc.) in the box - they are a truly professional company. I look forward to more purchases down the road.
On to the Blu-Ray player...I've had a chance to watch three movies so far and have been impressed with the player. Looks great, easy to set-up, has a nice form factor, and does everything just like it is suppossed to.
Over the weekend I updated the firmware - but have yet to try an BD-Live content.
Overall a very nice player and a great company. Highly recommend both.

Great Stand-Alone Blu-Ray Player

Written By Drew, New York on Friday, September 05, 2008

I wanted to first of all thank Chris from Lexington -- his "tip" helped me configure my Onkyo 705 to play in DOLBY TRUE HD -- after I went into the audio setup and selected DIRECT I had Dolby True HD working!

I was thinking of getting the stand alone player or getting the PS3 -- I felt that the playing would be better for me. Nice remote. Small footprint fits in nicely with my audio/video components.

The player is easy to use and fast. I didn't really like the GUI setup screens, not very clear how to exit out of the setup program. Aside from that movies play and sound great. Would definitely buy again.

up to a Onkyo TX-SR705 receiver and that is hooked up to a Samsung 50"
DLP TV. I'm using HDMI cables between components. Take some time to
read the instructions so you have the settings set that work the best for
your setup. Regular DVDs look very close to high definition. Load time is
not that much longer than a regular DVD player. I highly recomend the
Sony BDP-350 and would buy it again. One more thing before I go, I have
not had any DVDs or Blu-ray discs freeze or skip in this player.

Tip for new HD Sound Codecs

Written By Chris, Lexington, KY on Saturday, August 09, 2008

After being on the phone with Crutchfield for an hour it was decided that, despite both components' claims, I could not play an HD Master Audio track via bitstream from this Bluray player (Sony DBP-S350) to my Onkyo 805 and get the HD Master Audio light to come on the front of the receiver. Following my 60 minute rage about upgrading my bluray player for nothing, I read the manual on the S350 and found out that in order to pass the HD sound codecs via bitstream to an HDMI 1.3 receiver you need to change the factory default setting on the Bluray player for "BD Audio Settings" from "Mix" to "Direct." After doing this both Dolby True HD and HD Master Audio worked on titles that had those tracks and the indicator light came on for the receiver. Finally!!!!!

Great player for the money - very quick boot-up time and you can connect it to your LAN and get easy and quick firmware updates just like the PS3.

Moved from BDP-S300 to BDP-S350

Written By Kevin, North Carolina on Friday, August 08, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've used two BDP-S300s for nearly a year before buying the S350. I was and am very pleased with the 300s but was hoping for faster operation out of the 350 plus handling of the new lossless codecs. No question, the 350 is much quicker in startup than the 300, maybe 1/3 as much time needed from power on to disk tray eject.

The picture is as sharp as the 300. The big difference is the lossless codecs the 350 has the 300 does not. This includes 7.1 output where the 300 handled 5.1 only. I bitstream output to my processor and let it handle all of the decompression.

Very pleased.

This is my first Blu-Ray player and I had no idea what an improvement this piece could make to ANY system. I got this for my Home theater - HD projection - big speakers all round - 18in sub - 7.1 system with elite series receiver - bi-amped speakers etc etc. I found the sound and picture quality mind blowing heads and tails above a standard DVD with a good DVD player. I also compared a standard dvd in this player vs. a reg dvd player (NO CHANGE IN HDMI WIRES OR ANYTHING) and the upconversion this machine gave was even more impressive - my old DVDs all showed major sound and picture improvement in this unit. I then took the unit and plugged it into the other rooms that have a dvd player and with any system it improved the sound and picture quality so dramatically that I now am moving to this unit and replacing all of my dvd players.

Bottom line - the difference is noticeable no matter what system you are working with - worth IMO every penny and can't beleive I waited this long to upgrade.

The Sony unit is easy to use - smart - fast - clear - a best value.... Excellant upconversion programing - compact etc etc.

The feature that allows you to up grade the software online appears to be something that will make the unit have a long life time as well.

Best upgrade to my system/s possible IMO.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this player for about one week and am very pleased. The picture and sound quality are excellent. The control interface is sleek and easy to use. The all-around operation is very smooth and comparable to a DVD player in terms of boot-up time, disc-loading time, and response to commands. I have used two other Blu-ray players, and this player is the most polished one that I have used. Sony has a real winner on it's hands here.

First Impressions - Excellent

Written By Sam, Ewing, NJ on Thursday, July 24, 2008

These are my first impressions since I just received the player yesterday. Overall the BDP-S350 is an excellent blu-ray player. Picture quality when connected via HDMI to a Sony 40" Bravia XBR5 is impressive when viewing blu-ray movies in 1080p/24 mode. Standard DVDs play well also and upscale to 1080p effectively. Sound quality is also excellent over the digital optical link to my Denon receiver at 96kHz/24bits. Digital audio playback of DVD-Audio in Dolby Digital and DTS modes sounds better than my previous Denon DVD-1600. Even CD playback sounds great. I haven't tried photos and don't expect to use that feature. Setup of the device was fairly easy and network discovery worked very well. The user interface for configurations is easy to use. The user interface for playback could be improved by separating the playback functions which will be used by many people from the configuration and setup areas. It looks like Sony may plan to make some improvements once BD-Live is released because it would be natural for CD playback to access web directories of the track and allow selection by track rather than number. I have not added the USB flash memory or tried Profile 1.1 features like BonusView. The remote control could be improved. It got stuck in modes a few times which may be my unfamiliarity with the device or something more but further use will tell the story.

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 54 mbps. Blu-ray Disc discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better picture quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better sound quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby Digital Plus and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Much greater storage capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Compatibility with your current disc collections: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Surround Sound Decoders: The BDP-S350 has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors. Multi-channel PCM Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD (Core Only) are output through the HDMI jack (when encoded on the Blu-ray Disc).

  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension to Dolby Digital. The audio coding technology supports 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also includes the standard Dolby Digital bit stream and is compatible with all current Dolby Digital processors using the optical or coaxial digital output.
  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs. The reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.
  • DTS-HD (Core Only): DTS-HD is an extended format of the Coherent Acoustics audio coding system, which also encompasses DTS, DTS-ES, and DTS 96/24. DTS-HD is highly flexible in supporting the number of discrete surround sound channels. While 7.1ch DTS-HD surround sound is planned for Blu-ray Discs, the DTS-HD audio signals are down mixed to 5.1 or 2 channels for this player.

x.v.Color: The BDP-S350 supports x.v.Color, meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs when they become available in the future.

24p True Cinema: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second the BDP-S350 will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

1080p Output: Through the HDMI output, BDP-S350 has a 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixel) output option, at either the 60 Hz video or 24 Hz film frame rates.

DVD Upscaling: The BDP-S350 Blu-ray disc player is capable of upscaling your standard 480i DVD disc to 1080p via HDMI.

HDMI Control ('Bravia' Theatre Sync): Sony components compatible with the HDMI Control function can be controlled via the HDMI connection. This includes convenient features like One-Touch Play and System Power-Off.

Disc Compatibility: The BDP-S350 is compatible with many disc types:

  • BD-ROM: pre-recorded Blu-ray Discs (including DL)
  • BD-RE/BD-R: recordable Blu-ray Discs (including DL)
  • DVD-Video: pre-recorded DVD
  • DVD-R: record once DVD
  • DVD-RW: rewritable DVD
  • DVD+R: record once DVD (including DL)
  • DVD+RW: rewritable DVD
  • CD: pre-recorded CD
  • CD-R: record once CD-DA (music CD format only)
  • CD-RW: rewritable CD CD-DA (music CD format only)

Future Compatibility: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet.

Region Code: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BDP-S350 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1.

Copy Protection: Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Blu-ray Disc Java (BD-J): The BD-ROM format supports Java for interactive functions. BD-J offers content providers almost unlimited functionality when creating interactive BD-ROM titles. Note: In order to enjoy these interactive features, you may need to update your player with the latest firmware.

AVCHD: AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a high definition digital video camera format used to record in high definition or standard definition on DVD, using an efficient data compression coding technology. The  format is designed to compress video and audio (Dolby Digital or Linear PCM) data, enabling a high definition video signal shot on a digital video camera recorder to be recorded on DVD discs, in the same way as it would be for a standard definition signal.

JPEG Playback: This unit will play JPEG still picture files recorded onto the following discs BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW. Still images on your disc can be viewed in a Slide-Show as well as rotated 90-degrees left or right.

Movie Files: The BDP-S350 can play MPEG2 movie files recorded on DVD-R/RW discs (Video and VR mode) and  DVD+R/RW discs (VR mode only). Movie title information is displayed on screen. You can search for a title directly using the on screen keyboard or sort titles alphabetically or by date.

Resume Play: Resume play allows you to resume playback of a disc from the point where you last stopped. The stopping point is cleared when the Stop button is pressed more than once, the disc tray is opened, the player is turned off, or any of the settings on the player are changed.

Video Settings: The Sony BDP-S350 features the following video settings.

  • TV Type: You can select a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio for the unit's video output to match your connected Television's screen aspect ratio.
  • Screen Format: You can select the display configuration for a 4:3 screen picture on a 16:9 wide screen television. You can select from the following:

  • Picture Quality: You can choose from three picture quality settings.
    • Brighter Room: use when the room is brighter than normal
    • Theater Room: use when the room is dark
    • Standard: use in a typical room
  • FNR: This feature can be activated to reduce random noise appearing in the picture.
  • BNR: This function can be activated to reduce the mosaic-like block noise in the picture.
  • MNR: This feature can be activated to reduce minor noise around the picture outlines (mosquito noise).

Audio Settings: The BDP-S350 allows you to adjust the following audio settings:

  • AV SYNC: This feature adjusts the gap between picture and sound by delaying the sound output in relation to the picture output from 0 to 120 milliseconds.
  • Audio Filter: You can select between two audio filters for analog audio signals.
    • Sharp: provides a wide frequency range and spatial feeling
    • Slow: provides smooth and warm sound
  • Audio DRC: The player offers four dynamic range compression levels - Auto, Standard, TV Mode, and Wide Range.

Parental Control: The Sony BDP-S350 offers three Parental Control settings protected by a custom user 4-digit password:

  • BD Parental Control: Playback of some BD-ROMs can be limited according to the age of the users. Scenes may be blocked or replaced with different scenes.
  • DVD Parental Control: Playback of some DVD Videos can be limited according to the age of the users. Scenes may be blocked or replaced with different scenes.
  • Parental Control Region Code: Playback of some BD-ROMs or DVD Videos can be limited according to the geographic area. Scenes may be blocked or replaced with different scenes.

Quick Start: This feature shortens the startup time from standby mode. You can operate the player quickly after turning it on.

Dimmer: You can adjust the lighting of the unit's front panel display from Bright, Dark or Off.

Cooling Fan: A fan on the back of the BDP-S350 keeps the unit cool.

Remote Control

Multi-brand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on multiple brand TVs. Once programmed, the remote controls the TV's power on/off, input select, volume up/down, channel up/down, and mute.

Input and Output Notes

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface): The BDP-S350's HDMI output simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio in one cable. This unit features HDCP copyright protection technology, and must be connected to an HDCP-compliant device. If your TV has a DVI input instead of an HDMI input, you can connect this unit to your TV using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter. You will also need to connect audio cables to the player because DVI is a video only cable. The HDMI resolution can be fixed at 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, or set to Auto, which selects the highest resolution accepted by your television. The video format can be set to component or RGB.

Component Video: The component video resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i. If the HDMI output is set to 1080p, the component video output is fixed at 480i. When a DVD is played, the maximum component video output resolution is 480p.

Composite Video and S-Video: The composite and S-video outputs are always live and fixed at 480i. They can output video when playing a Blu-ray Disc.

Digital Audio Output: The Audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the optical and coaxial outputs. Settings allow you to transfer Dolby Digital or DTS sound tracks, or down-mix surround bitstreams to 2-channel PCM audio.

Analog Audio: There is a pair of stereo analog RCA outputs.

USB Extension Port: The BD-S350 features a rear panel USB Type-A port which allows you to enjoy additional content (such as BonusView) on certain Blue-ray Disc titles. Some BD-ROMs have bonus content and other data which can be downloaded to an inserted USB Flash Drive (sold separately).

Note: Sony recommends using the Sony USM1GH Flash Drive (158USM1GH, sold separately) and does not guarantee compatibility with all other manufacture's USB flash drives.

LAN (100) Port: You can connect the player's LAN (100) terminal of the player to your Internet source using a network cable (Ethernet cable sold separately) to update the unit's software using the network. Visit http://www.sony.net/ for information about firmware updates.
