My first blue-ray player
Written By
Brian, Fort Worth, TX on Thursday, April 16, 2009
This being my fiorst blue-ray player it is hard for me to review it. But I will say the load time is not at all bad and it plays both DVDs & blueray disc with exceptional quality on my Toshiba 46 in TV.

Great when it played

The picture was great on our Bravia 42;" the Bravia sync was easy, and I got used to the player load times; I even connected an ethernet cable from the player to my router to get the firmware updates more quickly. However, after four months we had to return the item. The problem started a month ago when it would not play a brand new blu-ray disc I purchased. I thought it was the disc and had that replaced. But then, the player would not recognize blu-ray discs from Hollywood Video and Netflix. Cleaning the discs did not help. Crutchfield customer service is great as ever and I'm waiting for a replacement.

Excellent Value

Is there a reason to pay more for a blu-ray player? I haven't found one but I'm sure there are those who may need to play THX Certified sound tracks but this model has a built in surround sound decoder that satisfies my sound needs. I'm using mine coupled via HDMI to a Toshiba 32RV530U Regza 32" 1080p LCD HDTV and I am totally satisfied (and tickled too) with the quality and sound output of this Sony player. No confusing programming, simple design, out of the box connected and playing within 15 minutes. Video upconversion for improved quality and they include an ethernet network port for future firmware updates. To me those are features worth having.

A Very Good Deal
Written By

Like most Sony products, this is a fine piece of equipment. It is so compact and lightweight that I was able to install it in a half shelf space in my stereo cabinet. The picture and sound quality and stability have been excellent. Getting the player as a Crutchfield 'Open Box' deal even solved the one consistent problem Sony has these days, which is very high prices for their products.
However, one thing I wish I had known before ordering is that the unit has *no* slow motion playback capability, neither forward nor reverse. Instead it has forward and backward 'jump replay' buttons, which I find useless. If you are the kind of person who looks for details of sports plays or nuances in movie scenes by slo-moing, then this is *not* the player for you.
