Blu-ray Disc players — the ultimate picture and sound

Blu-ray players deliver a better picture to your HDTV than any other available source. In fact, Blu-ray's 1080p picture is a perfect match for the 1080p screens found on most current TVs. Blu-ray movies also offer the most precise and realistic surround sound you can get. These players do a terrific job with standard DVDs, too — you'll see a cleaner, clearer picture with every disc in your collection. Many Blu-ray players can connect to the Internet for watching online movies from Netflix® and other video services.

Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Sony BDP-S570 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

  • BD-ROM: Bonus View (Profile1.1); BD-Live (Profile2.0); BD-ROM (SL/DL); 3D Blu-ray disc (Firmware upgrade required)
  • BD-R (ver.1.1/1.2/1.3)BD-RE (ver.2.1): recordable Blu-ray Discs (including DL)
  • Data BD: BD-REs and BD-Rs containing MP3/AAC/WMA audio files or JPEG still-image files
  • DVD-Video: pre-recorded DVD
  • DVD-R: record once DVD (including DL); Video and VR mode movies and MP3 or JPEG files
  • DVD-RW: rewritable DVD; Video and VR mode movies and MP3 or JPEG files
  • DVD+R: record once DVD (including DL); Video and +VR mode movies and MP3 or JPEG files
  • DVD+RW: rewritable DVD; Video and +VR mode movies and MP3 or JPEG files
  • SACD: pre-recorded Super Audio CD
  • CD: pre-recorded CD
  • CD-R: record once; CD-DA and MP3 or JPEG files
  • CD-RW: rewritable CD; CD-DA and MP3 or JPEG files

Region Code: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BDP-S570 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1.

Copy Protection: Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 54 mbps. Blu-ray Disc discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better picture quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better sound quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Much greater storage capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Compatibility with your current disc collections: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Note: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet via the rear panel Ethernet terminal.

3D-Ready: The Sony BDP-S570 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p.

Note: Free Firmware update required for 3D playback (available July 2010). 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D HDTV, 3D emitter & glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

AVCHD: AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a high definition digital video camera format used to record in high definition or standard definition on DVD, using an efficient data compression coding technology. The format is designed to compress video and audio (Dolby Digital or Linear PCM) data, enabling a high definition video signal shot on a digital video camera recorder to be recorded on DVD discs, in the same way as it would be for a standard definition signal.

MPEG Playback: The Sony Blu-ray disc player supports playback of MPEG (1-2-4) video files recorded on BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW discs, or a USB MSC (mass storage class) device.

JPEG Playback: This unit will play JPEG still picture files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW discs, or a USB device (Mass Storage Class or Still Image Capture Device) using the players' front-panel USB port. Still images on your disc can be viewed in a Slide-Show as well as rotated 90-degrees left or right.

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: The BDP-S570 supports MP3/WMA/AAC audio files recorded on BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs, or a USB device. When stopped and restarted, playback resumes at the same point as long as the tray hasn't been opened and the player hasn't been turned off.

SACD: Super Audio CD use a technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) to convert music into a digital signal that can be stored on a disc. Compared to the traditional PCM method (the technology used for CD), DSD offers a much higher resolution by following more closely the original waveform of music. With a frequency response of over 100kHz and a dynamic range over 120dB across the audible frequency range - some 64 times higher resolution then CD - Super Audio CD offers music reproduction that reveals details you just cannot hear on a normal CD.

Video Features

Video Outputs: The Sony BDP-S570 Blu-ray disc player features two high-definition video outputs (HDMI, Component) and one standard-definition video output (composite).

  • HDMI (ver.1.4): The BDP-S570's HDMI output simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio in one cable. This unit features HDCP copyright protection technology, and must be connected to an HDCP-compliant device. If your TV has a DVI input instead of an HDMI input, you can connect this unit to your TV using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter. You will also need to connect audio cables to the player because DVI is a video only cable. The HDMI resolution can be fixed at 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, or set to Auto, which selects the highest resolution accepted by your television. The video format can be set to Auto, component (4:4:4 or 4:2:2) or RGB.
  • Component Video: The component video resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i. If the HDMI output is set to 1080p, the component video output is fixed at 1080i. When a copyright protected DVD is played, the maximum component video output resolution is 480p.
  • Composite Video: The composite output is always live and fixed at 480i. It can output video when playing a Blu-ray Disc.

Precision Cinema HD Upscale: Precision Cinema HD upscale uses high bandwidth digital-to-analog conversion and processing to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than at the level of whole scan lines. Additionally, separate algorithms are used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts.

1080p HDMI Output with DVD Upscaling: Through the HDMI output, the BDP-S570 is capable of upscaling the resolution of your standard DVDs. Output options include Auto (highest resolution accepted by the TV), 1080p (60 Hz video or 24 Hz), 1080i, or 720p. If necessary the output resolution can also be set to 480p or 480i.

24p True Cinema: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second the BDP-S570 will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

Deep Color: The Sony Blu-ray player supports a color depth of up to 12 bits. Connecting the player and a TV that supports Deep Color via HDMI allows more accurate color reproduction than when connecting it to a TV that does not support Deep Color. The Deep Color function can be set to 10-bit, 12-bit, Auto, or Off.

x.v.Color: The BDP-S570 supports x.v.Color, meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs when they become available in the future.

Screen Settings: The Sony BDP-S570 features the following screen settings:

  • TV Type: You can select a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio for the unit's video output to match your connected Television's screen aspect ratio.
  • Screen Format: You can select the display configuration for a 4:3 screen picture on a 16:9 wide screen television. You can select from the following:
    • Original: select when connected to a TV with a wide mode function; displays a 4:3 screen picture in 16:9 aspect ratio even on a wide-screen TV
    • Fixed Aspect Ratio: changes the picture size to fit the screen size with the original picture aspect ratio
  • DVD Aspect Ratio: You can select the display configuration for playback of 16:9 screen pictures on a 4:3 screen TV. You can select from Letter Box or Pan & Scan.

Video Settings: The BDP-S570 offers the following video adjustments:

  • Picture Quality Mode: You can select from preset pictures settings for different lighting environment.
  • FNR: Reduces the random noise appearing in the picture.
  • BNR: Reduces the mosaic-like block noise in the picture.
  • MNR: Reduces minor noise around the picture outlines (mosquito noise).
  • I/P Noise Reduction: Improves the picture quality of Internet entertainment and enjoy crisp, clear images on your HDTV.

Cinema Conversion Mode: The Sony Blu-ray player offers two Cinema Conversion Modes - Auto and Video.

  • Auto: The player automatically detects whether the material is video-based or film-based, and switches to the appropriate conversion method.
  • Video: The conversion method suited for video-based material will always be selected regardless of the content.

BonusView: The BonusView feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Parental Control: The Sony BDP-S570 offers Parental Control settings to limit BD, DVD, and streamed Internet video according to the age of the users. You can also Allow or Block all unrated Internet video. The control settings are protected by a custom 4-digit password. You can also lock the disc tray to prevent it from being opened by mistake.

Quick Start: This feature shortens the startup time from standby mode. When the Quick Start Mode is turned on the standby power consumption is higher.

Dimmer: You can adjust the lighting of the unit's front panel display from Bright, Dark, or Off.

Screen Saver: The screen saver image appears when you do not use the player for more than 10 minutes while an on-screen display, such as the home menu, is displayed on your TV screen. The screen saver image helps prevent your display devices from becoming damaged.

Auto Standby Mode: If any button on the player or remote is not pressed for more than 30 minutes, the player automatically returns to standby mode.

Audio Features

Surround Sound Decoders: The BDP-S570 has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors; multi-channel PCM Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio are output through the HDMI jack (when encoded on the Blu-ray Disc).

  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension to Dolby Digital. The audio coding technology supports 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also includes the standard Dolby Digital bit stream and is compatible with all current Dolby Digital processors using the optical or coaxial digital output.
  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs. The reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio supports a maximum sampling frequency of 96 kHz, and 7.1 multi-channel surround. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 6 Mbps, with a lossy compression.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 24.5 Mbps and uses lossless compression (Lossless), and DTS-HD Master Audio corresponds to a maximum sampling frequency of 192 kHz, and maximum of 7.1ch.

Audio Settings: The BDP-S570 allows you to adjust the following audio settings:

  • AV SYNC: synchronize the picture and sound by delaying the audio output in relation to the picture output; 0 to 120 milliseconds
  • Audio DRC: The player offers three dynamic range compression levels - Auto, Standard, and Wide Range.

Audio Outputs: The Sony BDP-S570 Blu-ray disc player features two digital audio outputs (optical, coaxial) and one analog audio output (RCA)

  • Digital Audio Outputs: The BDP-S570 is equipped with a coaxial and optical digital output. The Audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the optical digital and coaxial digital outputs. Settings allow you to transfer Dolby Digital and/or DTS sound tracks, or down-mix surround bitstreams to 2-channel PCM audio. The maximum sampling frequency can also be adjusted; 96 kHz/24-bit or 48 kHz/16-bit.
  • Analog Audio: There is a pair of stereo analog RCA outputs.

Cooling Fan: A fan on the back of the BDP-S570 keeps the unit cool.

USB/Internet Functions

GREAT Blu Ray! Easy to set up.

Written By Trishav, New York on Monday, March 14, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This player set up in a snap, and I am NOT geeky. In 30 minutes I was seeing my
Netflix account. Very nice picture quality. My regular DVDs show a higher quality
picture image (I have a 42" 720p plasma TV) than on my DVD player. The price is
very reasonable for the movie quality I am seeing. I am very happy!

Crutchfield is wonderful also: I had my player 3 days after placing the order. I
purchased here on purpose so I would have phone support if I needed it and then I
didn't need any help :-) I will definitely order from Crutchfield again.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Blu-ray offers not just a player for Blu-ray movies but when connected to the internet via wireless router you can access not only Netflix but many other sites for movies, music games etc. It also plays regular DVDs and improves the clearity considerably. Winters here don't allow for all types of outdoor activity thus many evenings are spent at home. Given the limited programing on regular tv programing combined with constant re-runs this allows you alternative programing 24-7. For those who have seen Blu-Ray movies you know the picture quality you can expect. My tv is an old HD (2003) and the movies and programs I watch using the Blu-Ray player are amazing. Considering the price of going to a movie and buying popcorn and soft drinks just keeps going up I recommend investing in the player and streaming buying or renting videos. It really is an entertainment bargain plus you can stop and start the movies when you want to. Finally get the HDMI cable to maximize picture quality. If set-up is a concern call Crutchfield Tech support they will talk you through it. If you are still uncertain call a PC tech it doesn't take long. I have a friend who does it and it won't take long. I really enjoy mine.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received the BDP-S570 around Christmas. After some problems setting it up and
learning how to navigate the menus, I got it to work. The Wifi connection to my
router worked perfectly. It seemed to work well for maybe a day, but then I
turned it back on and noticed that I was getting no audio. I turned the
recorder off and then back on and it worked fine. I figured the no audio was
just a fluke, so I continued to use it.

The next day I noticed more problems with the audio. Sometimes I would turn it
on and everything was fine. But other times I would get no audio. I put a DVD
in the player to make sure the problem wasn't with the internet connection. I
had the same problem whether my source was a DVD or an internet source. I
tried different cables and different connections, but the problem remained.

I returned the player to Crutchfield and asked for an even exchange, figuring
the first player was just a lemon. Crutchfield sent an exchange quickly and
without any problems. I tried the new player but had the same problem.
Sometimes the audio worked and sometimes it didn't. It didn't matter if the
source material was from the internet or a DVD. The problem persisted.

The final day the player failed permanently. I could not get any audio all
day. Again I tried changing sources and changing connections. The result was
still the same. I returned the second player to Crutchfield.

The Crutchfield advisor was very helpful in guiding me toward the right player for us. This
one had been on backorder but arrived earlier than predicted. So far we have only played
DVD's, not Blu-ray discs yet, but the picture is very clear and the player is very easy to use.
The price was very reasonable for a player with 3D capability.

I'm a loyal Sony user. Have always had a high level of satisfaction with their
products. One problem (for me) has been the "users guide" and the
installation process. Being a bit slow in this area, I hesitated on my Blu Ray
purchase until I was the last guy on the block who didn't have one. Let me
just say this was the easiest, slickest installation and set up of any product I
have ever purchased, except for my electric razor. It synced right up to my
Apple Network and I was on the web in10 minutes. Picture quality is
awesome as well as all of the internet access features. Love it!

Works Seamlessly with Sony Bravia

Written By BusyUpgrading, Wisconsin on Tuesday, February 01, 2011

This Blu-ray player probably represents the best value at this time. I've used this player
for the past month and have not had any issues regarding performance or connectivity.
Start up is surprising fast given how slow some other players have been. The player
discerns if the disc is standard DVD or 3D capable, and for the discs that I have that have
both (MIchael Jackson's This Is It), it give you the choice of how you want to view the
contents. Resulting pictures are sharp with smooth transitions and no smearing.

Web connectivity for me is perfect, but I've got my wireless router very close to the player.
Not sure how well the wireless would work at a distance from the signal source. That
kind of thing is dependent upon your home's layout, etc. The remote takes a little getting
used to. I didn't see any way to illuminate the button labels. The volume control is actually
toward the top of the remote while on most other remotes it's at the bottom. The controls
on the player itself are a little odd; they are small buttons and under a recess that runs
along the full front. While it's a complaint, once you memorize the position of the buttons
and what they do, it's not as much of a problem.

Taken in total, I think you'll find this player to be a great value and worth your hard earned

Excellent unit for the price! Setup was simple - only took 5 minutes to have it up and
running with my Smasung DLP. Blu-ray looks great as expected, but the unit also does
a nice job upscaling regular DVDs and the internet streamied video from sites light You-
Tube are amazingly clean and smooth! The WiFi interface is really handy when hard
wired Ethernet is not available. The only issue I had was an intermittant failure trying to
download a firmware update via the Internet. But I just downloaded it to my laptop and
burned a boot CD as instructed on the Sony site. I put it in the player and it updated

Unbelievable! I'm not that old - well, 52, but that's besides the point. I've always
considered myself pretty tech savy. But I had no idea how far video devices had come
and how inexpensive they are and how many features they come with. I replaced a 5-
disc Panasonic DVD player with this Sony. I DON'T MISS THE PANASONIC! I think the
online content connection is great! We love being able to stream movies and music.
Only downside so far - limited content. I would have liked to see Blockbuster in addition
to Sony's Qiriocity, Amazon & Netflix. But I realize certain deals are worked out with
specific companies. Would like to see online content expanded with updates. Also,
remote is limited. Not really "input" friendly. Can be tedious. But there are plenty of after
market replacements if you do alot of inputting. Good, solid, entry-level Blu-Ray. Great
price at $138!

Best choice i could have made. I had a samsung blu ray that i replaced with this unit. I have a samsung lcd and was looking to get another samsung blu ray since they internetted so well together (turn blu ray player on and it turns lcd on and picks the source). I viewed this sony blu ray on crutchfield web site and really liked all the features (my samsung blu ray is 2 years old and very basic). I went ahead and bought this sony blu ray and boy am i having fun now. Wireless internetting was a breeze (my nephew is an internetting guru) but really didn't need him. I've watched all sorts of utube videos without a hitch. My router is on the 1st floor @one end of the house and this sony blu ray player on 2nd floor/ opposite side of house--no problems with signal. Net flix is just as good with no issues. For the price and all the features you can't go wrong. Just the wireless internetting fun with so many options, it's worth it (ex: utube, hulu, netflix, a science fiction web site--haven't tried it yet, but looks fun, ect) give it a try, you can't go wrong with crutchfield no hassel return (had it on my doorstep in 3 days during week before christmas). My 1st purchase from them but won't be my last. Enjoy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this device as an inexpensive alternative to using my laptop for streaming Netflix videos to my home theater. The laptop was giving me constant issues losing the HDMI connection to the home theater monitor in the middle of a film, then having difficulty getting it back. After much effort to get it working right every time, I just gave up..

However, the first time I watched a streaming video on this device, the video completely stalled twice, and I had to completely reboot.the video and the Blu-Ray player both. The factory update seemed to have solved that problem for the most part, hence my "so far, so good" review. Since then one film still gave me a problem by having to stop and download every 30 seconds. I wound up finishing the same movie on my desktop with no issues, which leaves the question, why was there any issue with the streaming, when the wifi is in the same room as the player? I believe this to be an annoying shortcoming of the machine.

Additionally I received one damaged disc from Netflix that would not play on this device, yet I was able to view most of it on my regular DVD player with only minor issue. I have still not used this device to play a Blu-Ray disc, though I'm confident that it's very competent for that purpose. I like that it has 3d capability, so hopefully it will be with me for a couple of years during which time I can focus on upgrading the TV itself.

Great Player with minor annoyances

Written By Mee812, Twin Cities, MN on Saturday, January 29, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

BDP-S570 is easy to setup without any manual or issues. The picture quality is superb and the upscaling feature works the best we have seen. WiFi is awesome and those with issues need to upgrade their router to enable WMM support. Our router has zero issues supporting all streaming aspects of this and other WiFi players. I would highly recommend this player for anyone. Now for the annoyances: the remote has a sticky button feel especially the navigation button center button which is relied upon heavily. The remote seems in need of a firmware update since it does not allow you to press the play arrow to start an episode from the episode selection menu, you must start by pressing the center nav button. Every other player lets us use the play arrow to start a selection. Many Blu-Ray discs do not support resume if you stop the movie, it starts at the beginning which is a real pain. Last - Sony has left off a real time clock on this player which we miss greatly from other players.

All in all a great player - make certain you update the firmware...

We've had this for about one month, and It's been quite the media center hub in the living room. I'm currently streaming music from my Windows 7 PC through my G router. Blu-Rays are impressive, even on a 32" LCD. I thought that I wouldn't be able to see a difference on a small TV but it is definitely there. A bigger LED is on the wish list. Netflix movies have a hard time streaming, maybe a firmware update will fix this. However, they come in at a higher quality than when using a PC. My connection may not be fast enough (10Mb down, 1Mb up) but Amazon HD movies play uninterrupted. This may be a problem with Netflix. Youtube is pointless, but you probably already knew that. I really wish I could turn the numerous extra features off and get them off of my menus. It's nice to have choices, but the menus appear so cluttered.

I was leaning towards a Samsung or another Panasonic (which has served me well over the last few years), but after reading the details of the Sony S570, I just had to give it a try.

Here are a few bullet point highlights:
- Easy to setup ... the player is very intuitive
- It streams quickly ... even with a mediocre wi-fi signal
- You can control is with your iPhone (using Sony MedControl app)
- On screen media menu is easy to use
- Perfect width for my rack
- Loads BluRays extremely fast (at least 2x faster than my 3yr old Panny BluRay)
- Music apps (Pandora, Slacker) work really well
- CF offered the best price!

The only CON is that the on screen media menu icons are a little small ... i.e., Netflix movie covers are sometimes hard too see.
Get the Sony, you will like it!

Great Player with Many Features

This player is great! Last time I was in the market, I made the mistake of straying away from Sony products and bought a LG BG-390 based its' rating as the top Blu-ray player. the LG was great until it decided that it didn't like playing Blu-ray movies anymore.

This player has many more features than the LG and is a breeze to setup. I quickly installed it and connected it to my Logitech Harmony 1000 remote with no problems. Load time is pretty quick. Seeing stuff not seen before w/o the 16:9 format....streaming Netflex without a miss from my Linksys "B" router from 2005....crystal clear and perfect color...the high speed routers are for your INTERNAL NETWORK...not your streaming....all the Gigabit hype seems to relate to sharing on your HOME network..between computers and the printer and a file server 8 MB Charter service works fine to stream Netflex, and others....via my old "B" router. I also have five computer users in the Ethernet and four wireless...none of them are affected while streaming Netflex, but we dont have a network, just all direct internet users. I am considering a Linksys 3000, dual-band, to create a home network with a file server and printer; but even the 3000 is a year old, has software that is better than the 2000, but apparantly still not yet very user will likely wait on the next generation for that too. My previous TV was a 32" Sony CRT from 1993 .... so you see i don't move too fast. JUST wanted to shed some light on the hype about Gigabit routers....don't waste your money for streaming from the internet !.

I've only had it setup for about 5 days, but so far so good.

* The DLNA (audio/video/photo streaming from a PC) works great. I'm using it with a
desktop with Win XP Home & a notebook with Win 7 Home Premium. Works through
Windows Media Player 11 on both computers. No other software needed.

* Netflix looks a bit better through this than it did through my 720p ROKU & Hulu Plus
looks a lot better than it did through my ROKU. (I only have about 4.5 megs on my DSL
connection, so it's not the fastest.) I've tried Pandora & Youtube as well with success,
but haven't tried any other streaming applications.

* Checking out audio/video/photo files through my USB flash drive works without a hitch.

* Blu-Ray movies are outstanding & standard DVDs are excellent. (I'm using a HDMI 1.4

* I'm using the free "Media Remote" app on my Motorola Droid to connect to the Blu-Ray
player. Not that it's all that practical, but the fact that I can use my smartphone to control
my Blu-Ray player via WiFi in my house is interesting. (The specs of the Sony player
refer to an IPhone app, but I found this app for the Droid.)

Granted, I haven't purchased a DVD player in about 10 years, but (to me) this is an
impressive piece of equipment for the price.

Debated whether to purchase this item, but are thrilled that we did. We don't
own any BluRay DVD's but we are amazed at the quality of the picture of all of
our DVDs. We purchased the Sony 700 46" TV along with Sony sound bar and
Blueray player. We stronly recommend this product.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ok, this may be a little premature as I haven't watched a disc on this, HOWEVER.......

Having the ability to access YouTube via my home network on my 55" LG and associated
surround system is unbelievable. All of the WiFi bells/whistles make this device worth the
very modest cost. Also, there is an App on Itunes that lets you use your Iphone as a remote
control - very easy to use, and very slick.

As always, great execution by the folks at Crutchfield.

I finally took the leap into the bluray world. It took less then thirty seconds
to get connected to the internet for streaming movies and music!! I also found
out you don't need an expensive HDMI cable for High Def!! Don't waste your
money!! Overall this is one sweet player!! Thank you Crutchfield!!

Couldn't be more pleased

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I researched these wi-fi blu ray players for some time and really liked this
one. The only hesitation was some reviews that said that it would drop out on
netflix. After talking to Crutchfield sale rep, I decided it would be worth a
try. I couldn't be more pleased. First, the Blu Ray features are great, it
look fantastic and performs flawlessly. It is so much faster than my old Sony
BR player. The online features are definitely worth the money. I have been
wanting to get Netflix on my TV for some time and this is the way to go. I have
only had a couple of incidents where I lost the signal, but nothing major. If
you have a good, modern router, within reasonable distance you should be fine.

sony BDP-S570 all good

Written By Randy H, Kansas city, MO on Sunday, November 28, 2010

I have been using the wii for streaming netflix which is a much better option for
streaming from "netflix", but this player almost eliminates the need for a sattelite or
cable provider due to it's numerous streaming options and setup is fairly simple. I
chose this over the S370 simply due to the wifi built in option. and have had no
problems with it yet!! highly recommend this unit.

Easy setup; Awkward Apps

Written By BrianB, Austin, TX on Sunday, November 28, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Setup was a breeze. Automatically detected the Wi-Fi network, and guided me through
setup. The App implementation is a little awkward, though. Maybe other vendors are
like this (I'm used to the iPhone), but you have to actually go to the sony website on your
computer and register every single app individually that you want to use. The apps are
somewhat limited as well. For example, I can't like/dislike songs on Pandora, and the
Netflix app will only let me views movies that have already been added in my queue from
the PC (can't browse or add new movies to the queue).

Tough Set up, but ultimately a great product

Written By ChadR, Plano, TX on Sunday, September 26, 2010

I bought this Sony Wifi Blueray player mostly because I didn't have a quick way
to run an internet cable to the room I need it in. I had signed up for a
NetFlix account and was mostly interested in streaming movies to the Sony
Blueray player. There were little to no instructions in the box on how to set
up the player, but I finally figured it out. Set up probably took me an hours
or so, but I'm not a tech savy guy. Ultimately, I got it figured out and began
streaming movies that same night. I did not however realize that you have to
place movies in your "que" with Netflix using your computer before they show up
on the Blueray player. Not a big deal, but a bit surprised. This Sony player
works fantastic. I'm using Verizon Fios for my internet / router provider and
it streams movies beautifully to this WiFi capable machine.

Great Player

Written By Roger S, Maine on Saturday, September 25, 2010

This was purchased as a replacement for a previous Sony SDP-300, which had issues.
This player is smaller than the originals blue ray players from just a few years ago.

it loads far faster than previous versions. It has built in features, that if you connect the
player to the internet via Ethernet or wireless, will allow you to use Pandora, Youtube,
Netflix, and others. I am quite impressed with the upgraded capability of this player.

An added bonus, you can plug a hard drive into this player and play movies through the
blue ray player.

Overall, I am thoroughly impressed with this player! I may purchase a second one for
bedroom use.

Works pretty good

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the BDP-S570 about a week ago. So far everything looks good. I checked the
internet, worked without a hitch. I just wish they offered more website options. DVD play is
good. I've not had a chance to check it's blu-ray playback yet. It integrates well with my
Bravia TV. No negatives so far.

HDCP Error

Will not work with my Yamaha Receiver. It causes HDCP errors for all inputs. To connect to Netflix; must go through Sony website and register system to get code to allow access.

Good B-ray player, bad streaming device

Written By Bill, Ithaca, NY on Wednesday, September 01, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a relatively good blue-ray player, loads fast, easy set-up. However, compared to my other player, it does very poor at streaming. The interface is too complicated, it is very, very slow, and the streaming quality is often poorer than the other player located adjacent to it. (It takes multiple clicks to download a Netflix movie, compare to 1 on the other player.) It is truly disappointing in this respect. Sony engineers did not have to reinvent the wheel, just If your just looking for a blue-ray player, there are cheaper ones out there.

Love it!

Bought this Wi-Fi Blu Ray player and absolutely love it. Very easy to set up
and connect to my wi-fi. Netflix and Pandora work like a breeze. Would
definitely recommend.

I have been WOWED!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchasing entertainment gear is certainly a complicated process. That's why I am completely sold on Crutchfield. I have been shopping Blue Ray players for quite some time and this Blue Ray is the combination of features that met every requirement for me. I am totally into Netflix streaming. I purchased the Roku player a year and a half ago and was quite pleased with it. The key considerations for my purchase of a Blue Ray Player were:
Combination of disc and streaming capability.
Built-in Wi-fi. I was not interested in a USB thumb drive sticking out of the component. Higher encryption than WEP.
Netflix ready.
Fast Blue Ray disc loading.
Simplicity of set-up.
Price below $300.
The Sony BDP-S570 earns a 5 star rating on every point. Two things I learned after purchase were a little annoying but not so bad. First, you have to register this player with Sony. Second, Blue Ray on Netflix costs an extra $4.00 per month. Neither of these issues would have changed my mind about purchasing this player. I include them in this review only to bring out the points for other customers who are considering the same migration to Blue Ray.
The thing that most impressed me about this player was the ease of setup. I literally went from opening the box to easy chair viewing in 30 minutes. Wow! Now I just need to find a new home for my Roku. :)

Everything but the kitchen sink....

Written By Mark, Jeffersonville, IN on Wednesday, May 26, 2010

I bought this player mainly for 2 reasons: Sony reliability and SACD capability. As for BD/DVD playback, it aces everything I've thrown at it. I also must add that I chose this player over the other 2 in Sony's current line simply for the convenience of the built-in memory. 3D may interest others but it wasn't a factor here for me. I played with some of the online features and what I tried worked smoothly. Considering local video stores are going by the way of the Dodo bird here in town, the Netflix feature looks promising. For the features of this player, I highly recommend it.

Does everything I need it to perfectly!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me preface this by saying that I don't need the extra stuff. Netflix, Pandora, etc... I don't really care about that and I'll never use it (I have an AppleTV and use that for renting and media browsing). I bought this blu-ray player to play blu-rays and potentially SACDs.

My previous player was the Samsung BDP-1400. It's painfully slow. Pirates of the Caribbean takes about 15 minutes to load, with no exaggeration. It also needs updated all of the time. With this Sony, I haven't tried Pirates yet, but I popped Iron Man in.

It starts up with a PS3-esque menu. After selecting the disc, it loads the movie in about 10 seconds. Seeking through the movie, navigating the pop-up menu, etc., is all quick, smooth, and enjoyable.

I got the S570 instead of the S470 solely for wireless updates. I believe they're the same in all other aspects.

If you're interested in all of the extras (I'm not, though I understand them), this certainly has it. Internet services, Wifi, 24p playback, 3D (coming soon), iPod/iPhone remote, quickplay, and so on. I'll update if I come across any issues, but at this point in time, I love it and wholeheartedly recommend it!
