Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this Sony BluRay player primarily because of its' wireless Internet
streaming capability & the number of vendor options available (particularly
Amazon VOD). I have a great Harman Kardon DVD-48 workhorse, but I had been
looking at adding a 2nd player for wireless video streaming to my new Sony
Bravia LCD & this Sony BluRay player fit the bill. It is connected using an
Audioquest Forest HDMI cable.

It arrived right on time, a Crutchfield tradition I appreciate, & I had it up
and running on my secure wireless network in less than 15 minutes. It took
another 15 minutes to set up my accounts with my favorite vendors supported by
this player & I was ready to go. I'm using it only in a wireless environment & I
have had absolutely no issues with re-buffering, lag time, etc. I have been able
to stream flawlessly from Amazon VOD & NetFlix for movies, along with Pandora &
the Digital Concert Hall (an outstanding option for classical music junkies like
myself) for music thus far. The BluRay player also up-converts regular DVDs
beautifully - I don't own anything in BluRay yet so I can't speak to that
functionality but I am sure it will exceed my expectations given how superbly it
has done everything else.

This particular player must have a strong Wifi mechanism because it is located
in another room, at least 45 feet away from my wireless router, & works without
a hitch. The Sony BluRay BDP-S770 player is another high quality product from an
always reliable Crutchfield.

5 pound weakling

Written By The Garage King, Linden, MI on Tuesday, April 05, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I returned the first unit I received because right at start-up, the screen would
flash on and off. The second unit was no different. I then learned that the
signal from this Sony is so incredibly weak, it can not push through an 18-foot
long HDMI cable. The unit works just fine connected directly to the TV via a
short (4-foot MAXIMUM) HDMI cable. If your HDMI cable run is more than 4 feet,
I recommend looking at a different player. This unit is a 5-pound weakling, and
the last Sony product I will ever purchase.

Great Upgrade

Written By Jack, Mount Juliet, TN on Saturday, March 26, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After debating my purchase to upgrade my system from an older Sony BluRay,
finally decided on the S770. Having completed the install over the weekend, my
initial evaluation is this is an excellent piece of equipment.

BluRay disc start up is very fast. Picture quality is excellent.

Have an older 7.1 receiver so am passing bitstream via PCM through HDMI to
my receiver. Needed to change the factory audio settings to PCM and bitstream
to do this. Audio is exceptional with DTS MA pumping 7.1 sound through my
system after this set up.

What's really cool is the range of video and audio internet feeds coming through
the system. Pandora, for example, provides clear, digital audio through the 770.

Started with WiFi which worked OK. My modem is a few rooms away and I was
getting a 60% signal. Switched to ethernet (which was available) which really
improved things. Data is now lightning fast.

Have not tried everything yet, but for what I was looking to do, can only give 5
stars to this player.

Picture quality and sound is excellent. Fast connection to Wifi but the Wifi
drops network if your wireless modem is in another room. Five bars on the BluRay
is not like 5 bars on a MacBook. I moved my modem to our media room so I could
hard wire the BluRay. Now works for Pandora.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic audio and video from this BD player. I was very impressed with the
sound quality of some older CDs I play on this--very crisp and clear. I have not
yet connected this device to my home computer network but I do not anticipate
any problems with the wireless connection since my Sony Bravia TV connected
without any trouble. My only issue is with the remote and small buttons that are
difficult to see in low light. I am very pleased with this BD player!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'll provide full disclosure...I usually buy Sony products, so can be biased. I
have a Sony TV and other components, so was interested in a Sony Blu-Ray for
the compatibility and syncing features. I also bought the 770 when it was on
sale for a comparable price to the 550. Not sure if it's necessarily worth the
difference, but at the sale price it was a great deal!

I have the quick-load feature turned off, and find that movies do load slowly,
compared to a DVD player, but it is not an unbearable wait. What I find
frustrating is that I can't seem to just go to the Disc Menu, I have to
"fast-forward" through each preview on most discs before being able to select
chapters, or simply play the movie. (maybe I'm
missing something)

I love the profile of the machine and it has a fantastic feature set. Fantastic
video and audio playback.

Netflix is a great feature, and after upgrading our internet to 18mbps service I
rarely have the movie freeze. I'm still not sure if this is a player problem,
router problem, or Netflix problem. In any case, it seems to work great. My only
other complaint is the lack of functionality within Netflix. You can only select
movies already in your Instant queue. I would at the least like to be able to
rate a movie after it was watched, rather than have to log in to the account
from a computer. And of course it would be ideal to be able to browse movies to add.

That keeps the player from getting 5 stars.

Good BR Player, WiFi link is weak

Written By Jeff K, Acton, MA on Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this BR DVD player about 3 weeks ago and have generally been quite happy
with it. The picture quality is quite good on both BR and regular DVDs and the startup time
is much faster than my first generation BR player. The menus provided to access Internet
content such as Netflix and Pandora are easy to navigate. My only complaint is that the
internal WiFi does not pickup the signal from my access point very well. In order to stream
video, you really need to have close to 100% signal strength or the video stream will
continually stop and rebuffer. I ended up adding a WiFi repeater which brought the signal
strength up to the level I needed.

If you want to use the network capabilities of this device, I recommend you either locate it
near your access point, or use a hardwired ethernet connection. Other than that, it's a very
good player.

Love the unit. Clear, crisp picture. Setup to network was very simple.
Playing a movie and viewing picture off a USB thumb drive is very convenient.

Caution to individuals with internet providers who are not registered in the United States.
You will not be able to activate the enhanced features. No Hulu, No Pandora, No Netflix.
You do still get Youtube.

Still trying to see if I can set up a proxy on this to get the enhanced features activated.

Great Blu-Ray player - and much more

Written By MarkB, Califon, NJ on Thursday, February 03, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I was shopping for a Blu-Ray player, I was really focused on just getting the
best Blu-Ray performance for the dollar.

Now that I have had the Sony BDP for awhile, though, it is clear that it is more than
just a Blu-Ray device. The range of services to which it connects over the Internet
is both amazing and very useful. In particular, the Pandora radio and NetFlix
capabilities are nice (although NetFlix needs to stream more movies and reduce
its reliance on DVDs).

You can also synch up with your music collection on a PC serving the house, use
other movie services, visit You Tube, and discover a whole slew of services that I
didn't even know existed.

Received this product in Dec, 2010. I believe it provides a great picture even with DVDs.
I had never used the internet to watch videos or movies before, but when we got this unit
hooked up, we began watching movies through Netflix. What a great way to watch
them!! The ability to log in and pull up a movie without having to go and rent one
otherwise is so easy. I have had no issues at all and will certainly look forward to future
Sony products.

Good Product

Written By ohm777, USA on Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Good product. Plays crisp pictures. Varied internet options (we use Netflix). Two [minor] complaints ... the ON/OFF button is on the left right above the disk load tray and the OPEN/CLOSE button for the tray is on the right. Ergonomically speaking, I would have put the OPEN/CLOSE button on the left (over the disk tray). Backlit remote control isn't that great either. Yes, there is backlighting, but they only light up the perimeter of each button and not the button itself. Consequently you can't "see" the buttons' functions. Buttons are black and not translucent. Thus, in a dark room, unless you have the buttons memorized, you can't see what button you're pushing. So there's no value added since you still have to turn on the light to read the buttons. Overall, I would recommend this product, but it definitely could have been designed better.

Great player, but Netflix streamer is buggy

Written By Jay P, South Florida on Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the most part I love this player. Turns on very fast & love the built in WiFi, can even
download an app to control with your iPhone (it's a guy thing). However, occassionally
when streaming Netflix the player will freeze up & kick you out. This wouldn't be a big
deal but it doesn't remember where you left off so you have to fast forward back to where
you were. I have the unit in a well ventilated area so don't know if it's heat buildup or
firmware. Hope Sony fixes this bug. Other than that I love this player but can't give it 5

I wasn't exactly sure what to expect but what I did get was a machine far beyond
my expectations. The internet feature is one of the coolest and easiest to use. It
was easy to connect and to install. You can do this "blind-folded". I'm very
pleased with this Sony player and with its performance. I can recommend it
without hesitation.

Great Blu Ray Player

Written By Mason, Bartlett, TN on Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had been looking at quite a few Blu Ray players and finally decided on this
one for the features and price point. I am very happy with my purchase!
Start-up times are minimal (I really don't notice much difference from my old
DVD player), wireless streaming works well (I have a Netflix subscription and
have watched quite a few movies and shows), plus there are lots of extra
features and apps to enjoy with this player. Crutchfield had the best price on
it, and as always their service is outstanding, so it was an easy decision to go
with this one.

Not the best Hulu Plus implementation

Written By Uwe, Austin, TX on Thursday, January 13, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this player for about 3 months and can proudly give 4 stars. Blu-ray performance is overall excellent; however, my old player definitely delivers a slightly better picture. I tested its streaming capabilities and connected the player wirelessly to the Internet, which setup was easy to do, even with WEP encryption enabled. I have tested Crackle, Hulu Plus, and Netflix, and this is what I found:

Whenever programming is interrupted by commercials as seen in Crackle and Hulu Plus, it's a major interrupt as the player cannot preload commercials to allow a seamless operation between the movie and commercials (btw, Roku does this brilliantly). Then, both interfaces do a lousy job accurately showing the precise order of episodes. It's actually in reverse, meaning; you need to scroll to the last episode to start with the first episode of any given series. As for Netflix, it does a real nice job there, since Netflix (kudos!) is commercial-free. However, the implementation does not support NetFlix's "Browse and Search" as Roku provides. In order to watch NetFlix movies you would typically log on to NetFlix from your computer and place movies into the Instant Queue. Overall, the wireless interface works well. At times during operations it loses the connection to the Internet, and sometimes you need to restart the entire movie (when "retry" doesn't work). I am using a wireless n-router and my Internet speed is 24 Mbit/sec.

Easy to setup. Great Picture on my Sony 40XBR9. Fast load as promised. Still one minor glitch that I should be able to iron out in the setup. After watching a Blu-ray I have to restart my flat screen in in order to get the full screen for HD TV.

Possibly the best Blu-Ray player ever

Written By Jagar, Fort Leonard Wood, MO on Saturday, October 30, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A spectacular machine! I've owned a Sony BDP S-300 for over 3 years. It
was a fine Blu-Ray player, but took 2 minutes to boot up and another 2 minutes
to read a disc, plus it lacked any capability to stream movies to my TV, so it
was time to upgrade.

What a difference! The new Sony BDP S770 takes just seconds to boot up and
Blue-Ray discs play almost instantaneously. The operation menu is simple and
intuitive. Sony integrated everything flawlessly, including Wi-Fi. Setup was a
breeze and took just 10 minutes. The picture is fantastic. Streaming movies
from Netflix proved easy and is the way of the future. This is the best money I
have ever spent for a video component. I was also impressed by the small
footprint of the BDP-S770. It's less than half the size of the Blu-Ray player
it replaced.

I received outstanding service from Crutchfield. The BDP-S770 was on their
website weeks before any retail outlet and I got the player just three days
after I ordered it.

Very good player, but....

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first Blu-Ray player. The setup was very easy but I had one issue. My player is
connected to a A/V receiver and I am also using a Tivo. After watching a Blu-Ray and
turning the player off I was not able to watch TV via Tivo. The Blu_Ray player comes with
the HDMI control setting turned on and this was causing an issue with my TV. Once I
turned this setting off everything worked fine.

The Player boots up very quickly and the picture quality is fantastic but like I said before
this is my first player and I am sure they all have a fantastic picture.

Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Sony BDP-S770 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

  • BD-ROM: Bonus View (Profile1.1); BD-Live (Profile2.0); BD-ROM (SL/DL); 3D Blu-ray disc (Firmware upgrade required)
  • BD-R (ver.1.1/1.2/1.3)BD-RE (ver.2.1): recordable Blu-ray Discs (including DL)
  • Data BD: BD-REs and BD-Rs containing MP3/AAC/WMA audio files or JPEG still-image files
  • DVD-Video: pre-recorded DVD
  • DVD-R: record once DVD (including DL); Video and VR mode movies and MP3 or JPEG files
  • DVD-RW: rewritable DVD; Video and VR mode movies and MP3 or JPEG files
  • DVD+R: record once DVD (including DL); Video and +VR mode movies and MP3 or JPEG files
  • DVD+RW: rewritable DVD; Video and +VR mode movies and MP3 or JPEG files
  • SACD: pre-recorded Super Audio CD
  • CD: pre-recorded CD
  • CD-R: record once; CD-DA and MP3 or JPEG files
  • CD-RW: rewritable CD; CD-DA and MP3 or JPEG files

Region Code: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BDP-S770 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1.

Copy Protection: Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 54 mbps. Blu-ray Disc discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better picture quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better sound quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Much greater storage capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Compatibility with your current disc collections: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Note: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet via the rear panel Ethernet terminal.

3D-Ready: The Sony BDP-S770 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires 3D content, a 3D-ready HDTV with 3D-active glasses, and a high speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

AVCHD: AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a high definition digital video camera format used to record in high definition or standard definition on DVD, using an efficient data compression coding technology. The format is designed to compress video and audio (Dolby Digital or Linear PCM) data, enabling a high definition video signal shot on a digital video camera recorder to be recorded on DVD discs, in the same way as it would be for a standard definition signal.

MPEG Playback: The Sony Blu-ray disc player supports playback of MPEG (1-2-4) video files recorded on BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW discs, or a USB MSC (mass storage class) device.

JPEG Playback: This unit will play JPEG still picture files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW discs, or a USB device (Mass Storage Class or Still Image Capture Device) using the players' front-panel USB port. Still images on your disc can be viewed in a Slide-Show as well as rotated 90-degrees left or right.

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: The BDP-S770 supports MP3/WMA/AAC audio files recorded on BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs, or a USB device. When stopped and restarted, playback resumes at the same point as long as the tray hasn't been opened and the player hasn't been turned off.

SACD: Super Audio CD use a technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) to convert music into a digital signal that can be stored on a disc. Compared to the traditional PCM method (the technology used for CD), DSD offers a much higher resolution by following more closely the original waveform of music. With a frequency response of over 100kHz and a dynamic range over 120dB across the audible frequency range - some 64 times higher resolution then CD - Super Audio CD offers music reproduction that reveals details you just cannot hear on a normal CD.

Video Features

Video Outputs: The Sony BDP-S770 Blu-ray disc player features two high-definition video outputs (HDMI, Component) and one standard-definition video output (composite).

  • HDMI (ver.1.4): The BDP-S770's HDMI output simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio in one cable. This unit features HDCP copyright protection technology, and must be connected to an HDCP-compliant device. If your TV has a DVI input instead of an HDMI input, you can connect this unit to your TV using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter. You will also need to connect audio cables to the player because DVI is a video only cable. The HDMI resolution can be fixed at 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, or set to Auto, which selects the highest resolution accepted by your television. The video format can be set to Auto, component (4:4:4 or 4:2:2) or RGB.
  • Component Video: The component video resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i. If the HDMI output is set to 1080p, the component video output is fixed at 1080i. When a copyright protected DVD is played, the maximum component video output resolution is 480p.
  • Composite Video: The composite output is always live and fixed at 480i. It can output video when playing a Blu-ray Disc.

Precision Cinema HD Upscale: Precision Cinema HD upscale uses high bandwidth digital-to-analog conversion and processing to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than at the level of whole scan lines. Additionally, separate algorithms are used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts.

1080p HDMI Output with DVD Upscaling: Through the HDMI output, the BDP-S770 is capable of upscaling the resolution of your standard DVDs. Output options include Auto (highest resolution accepted by the TV), 1080p (60 Hz video or 24 Hz), 1080i, or 720p. If necessary the output resolution can also be set to 480p or 480i.
