Control your Sony receiver with your smartphone

Sony's MEX-BT3100P CD receiver makes it easier than ever to use a smartphone in your car. Its App Remote feature lets you launch smartphone apps from the receiver, while your smartphone acts as a remote control and a second display for apps and song info. Plus, the MEX-BT3100P will read incoming text messages on your Android phone aloud, so you can stay in the loop while keeping your eyes on the road.

Connecting your smartphone is easy — just plug your iPhone® into the USB input, or set up a Bluetooth® link with your Android™ to get started. Then use your phone's touchscreen to do things like selecting sources, picking radio stations, and launching apps. And on the other side of the App Remote's two-way street, you can select apps using the stereo's source button, the same way you'd choose the CD player or radio as your source.

Sony MEX-BT3100P

Bluetooth convenience

Hands-free calling is a given with this receiver, but you'll enjoy wireless audio streaming from your mobile devices, too. And if you're a Pandora® Internet radio fan, you can control your stations from the receiver, plus give "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" ratings.

Serious sonic controls

Whether your music's on a smartphone, an iPod®, or CDs, the MEX-BT3100P has the chops to make it sound great. Sony's Dynamic Reality Amp kicks out realistic sound with excellent depth of field and soundstaging, and you can tweak it to match your car with a variety of tools, including a 7-band equalizer and digital time alignment. The two sets of preamp outputs come in handy when you expand the system with external amps or powered subs.

Sony

Your smartphone becomes an awesome remote control with Sony's App Remote feature.

Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

I love the fact that this radio does so much stuff. It can be a little complicated to use at times if you use all the possible connections. But overall a good radio. You cant even find a radio like this for the price I paid any more.

There are a lot of positive things that can be said for this unit. The sound quality is good, it is chocked full of features and the B/T handsfree calling is pretty grand. (Siri integration would be nice.) However, if you're going to use it for iPod features, be prepared to go bald trying. The iPod controls are clunky, glitchy and produce an overall terrible experience. Music stops and starts like a buffering internet radio station. Playlists randomly start over at the first song. Navigation controls work sometimes, but not all of the time, and tend to be inconsistent.

I think that this unit may be defective and so I will attempt to have it exchanged. If it is simply a defective unit then I will update this review. For now, if you're an iPod, iPhone or iPad music listener, this is a no-go.

I was explaining the Bluetooth capabilities to my inlaws. I had put a JVC w/ blue tooth HU in my 2006 Civic. It was great! They went with this model. The JVC you can press the phone button on the JVC and activate voice commands. From the time I have spent with them you cannot do this with the Sony. The JVC will start Pandora automatically on your phone by pressing one button. When I was reading the manual on the sony I did not see this feature. All of us are using Andriod phones. I have a a Razr Maxx (older model with JB). They have a Pantech with ICS I think. All of us are also on Verizon. On their Sony you have to scroll through the phone book to make a call-pressing button to navigate-taking your eyes off the road. In the JVC I could press the phone button and voice command the phone to make a call. I have traded the Civic in on a 2012 Focus with Sync. Sync is not as good as the JVC.

    Pros: Looks nice. Sounds great!

Cons: Bluetooth capabilities are a bit compared to another manufacturer I have experience with.

Great upgrade for 92 Civic. Easy install with lit, harness and instructions from Crutchfield.

Great little stereo. I bought for blue tooth capabilities and ability to add SiriusXM in the future. I did not install the satellite radio, but all features work flawlessly. Install in my Altima was a breeze.

Pros: Bluetooth is very nice and easy to both receive and make calls while keeping your phone in your pocket.

Cons: There are so many features, that it can be difficult to navigate them all.

Cons: Some of the controls aren't very intuitive, but that's why the manual's there I suppose. Also, doesn't work with certain iPod cords, says "USB overload" even though it's the factory cord.

Great little unit. I installed the unit with little issue into a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. I would recommend getting an adaptor that plugs directly into the factory wiring and attaches easily to the units wire harness, much cleaner, easier and affordable (about $5 with shipping) The instructions from Crutchfield were clear and concise. Sounds great, looks great and all of the functions work well. The display has many options but very simple to navigate and easy to see night or day. Price was great.

Pros: Has all the functions needed Good looking Great sounding Great price

Installed this radio to replace a 10 year old pioneer because I couldn't get the sound right, even with infinity kappa highs and a 12 inch sub. The improvement was huge without even tuning it. As soon as I turned it on I played a familiar song and heard things I couldn't before. It somehow pushes much deeper bass from my sub without making it move more and it reduced sibilance from my metal tweeters. (this was comparing everything set at zero on both head units) It also sounds smoother and cleaner. For the price, this thing is packed with processing capability. The 7 band equalizer allows you to attenuate harshness or bring out deep bass pretty effectively. I even turned off the high and low pass crossovers on my amps and just used the radio because it sounded better. You can choose 50-120hz for the high and low pass and even adjust the slope of attenuation from 1-3 to blend your highs and lows. The bluetooth seems to work fine on my Galaxy S4. Streams spotify and receives calls no problem. You can't change the color or do anything super cool like watch movies, but you can watch movies on your phone and stream the audio.

Pros: Cheap, 7 band equalizer, bluetooth, processing is impressive for the price

Cons: only 2 pre-outs, only lights up blue, probably gonna go deaf because music sounds incredible

Was a breeze to install, and just as easy to use. There are some minor bumps when it comes to using the USB cable and playing Spoitfy radio with an iPhone. It sometimes has trouble connecting, and you have to stop Spotify, play something in iTunes, and then return to Spotify and it will play. Not every time, but sometimes. I don't believe it to be the radio at fault, but more of the iPhone trying to sort things out. A bump none the less.

Pros: Improves stereo quality, allows for aux input, and USB input AND bluetooth, handsfree quality is great

Cons: Connection to Spotify can be a little frustrating at times

I purchased this item to replace my factory stereo. I drive an old 1998 Dodge Durango and the sound system was limping along on two speakers; one in the rear driver's door and one in the front passenger door. The little directional selector knob had a mind of its own. So, I researched on this site for two months. The Crutchfield "does it fit your car" feature was very helpful when I was considering the right system for my vehicle.

This product is great. I can use Bluetooth calling, so it's completely hands free. The remote works well and helps me keep my eyes focused on the road. I ADORE the Pandora. I haven't listened to the radio. Don't need to. And don't want to. Great item.

Pros: The Bluetooth is amazing. Haven't used the app remote feature because I don't need to. Seems extraneous to me.

Cons: Setting the highs, mid range and bass on the equalizer was a little challenging. The manual doesn't give you a description of the 7 channels. But played with it and was able to tweak it to my liking.

    We love it!

Having bought and installed many stereos throughout the years I was really satisfied with this stereo. It seems to have great sound with the built in eq settings and looks pretty easy to operate. What I was really impressed with was the sound during a phone call. I called the person in the car and it sounded like a speaker phone...not like you're in a tunnel talking. I was very impressed with that. Install was easy with the GM adapter for the Grand Am and the finished product looked very nice in the car. I have been buying Crutchfield for many years and will continue as their service and customer service tech's are top notch!!!

I am used to the quality and build of Alpine. The faceplate on the Sony is a little light and has some portions that have a cheap feel to it. But regarding the sound quality it's great. The 7-band equalizer and digital time alignment is well worth the price and effort to learn how to use it. It even has a feature that will allow you to enhance the bass to your rear speakers, or use the rear speaker outputs to directly connect a subwoofer, how cool is that! Great Job Sony!

    Pros: Sound enhancements Microphone adjustments

Cons: Faceplate feels a little on the cheap side

I recently purchased a diesel pickup, and being a 6-speed manual I really wanted to have wireless bluetooth calling capability. I did quite a bit of research on this product and others, but ended up going with this one. Once this was installed I have definitely been impressed with this stereo. The bluetooth works as if it was a factory install and the people on the other line thought I was still talking on my phone like regular. I was slightly concerned with the noise pollution released from my truck, but it has not been a complication at all. This stereo was easy to use and very easy to set up. I also installed the App on my galaxy and it works very well. I have not spent much time experimenting with it so I am sure there are many more things it is capable of that I have yet to discover. My next step will be speakers to compliment the capability of this new stereo.

Pros: Wireless bluetooth that works like a factory option. Stylish/clean look

Cons: It beeps three times after you shut your vehicle off, you can get this turned off but I have been to busy to mess with it and it has not bothered me that much.

Wow, this is such a massive upgrade from my factory stereo (with tape deck and no CD), that I think I'd be normally knocked over with appreciation for every little thing about this receiver. And for the most part, I'm very impressed. The sound quality is really good, the value is tremendous, and it was very easy to install in my 1997 Avalon. I've got to knock it down to 4 stars overall, however, due to the "Ease of Use" issue. It's not easy to figure out how to simply adjust the bass, treble, and midrange levels. I appreciate that Sony wants to provide a lot of sophistication with this thing, but at times, it's too much and too confusing. Eventually, you can figure it out, but it ain't easy when all you want to do is give the Black Keys a little more bass.

Also, one thing I don't like is that if the stereo decides you should be on some other menu than the main one, you can't physically turn down the volume unless you hit the "Source" button first.

Sometimes, you want to change the volume in a hurry, and you can't always do that on this unit. Bit of a drag.

But overall, I'm very happy with this purchase.

Pros: Ease of installation, value, sound quality
