Overview

Our take on the Sony MEX-BT3100P

Sony's MEX-BT3100P CD receiver makes it easier than ever to use a smartphone in your car. Its App Remote feature lets you launch smartphone apps from the receiver, while your smartphone acts as a remote control and a second display for apps and song info. Plus, the MEX-BT3100P will read incoming text messages on your Android phone aloud, so you can stay in the loop while keeping your eyes on the road.

Control your Sony receiver with your smartphone

Sony's MEX-BT3100P CD receiver makes it easier than ever to use a smartphone in your car. Its App Remote feature lets you launch smartphone apps from the receiver, while your smartphone acts as a remote control and a second display for apps and song info. Plus, the MEX-BT3100P will read incoming text messages on your Android phone aloud, so you can stay in the loop while keeping your eyes on the road.

Connecting your smartphone is easy — just plug your iPhone® into the USB input, or set up a Bluetooth® link with your Android™ to get started. Then use your phone's touchscreen to do things like selecting sources, picking radio stations, and launching apps. And on the other side of the App Remote's two-way street, you can select apps using the stereo's source button, the same way you'd choose the CD player or radio as your source.

Bluetooth convenience

Hands-free calling is a given with this receiver, but you'll enjoy wireless audio streaming from your mobile devices, too. And if you're a Pandora® Internet radio fan, you can control your stations from the receiver, plus give "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" ratings.

Serious sonic controls

Whether your music's on a smartphone, an iPod®, or CDs, the MEX-BT3100P has the chops to make it sound great. Sony's Dynamic Reality Amp kicks out realistic sound with excellent depth of field and soundstaging, and you can tweak it to match your car with a variety of tools, including a 7-band equalizer and digital time alignment. The two sets of preamp outputs come in handy when you expand the system with external amps or powered subs.

Sony

Your smartphone becomes an awesome remote control with Sony's App Remote feature.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

I love the fact that this radio does so much stuff. It can be a little complicated to use at times if you use all the possible connections. But overall a good radio. You cant even find a radio like this for the price I paid any more.

There are a lot of positive things that can be said for this unit. The sound quality is good, it is chocked full of features and the B/T handsfree calling is pretty grand. (Siri integration would be nice.) However, if you're going to use it for iPod features, be prepared to go bald trying. The iPod controls are clunky, glitchy and produce an overall terrible experience. Music stops and starts like a buffering internet radio station. Playlists randomly start over at the first song. Navigation controls work sometimes, but not all of the time, and tend to be inconsistent. I think that this unit may be defective and so I will attempt to have it exchanged. If it is simply a defective unit then I will update this review. For now, if you're an iPod, iPhone or iPad music listener, this is a no-go.

I was explaining the Bluetooth capabilities to my inlaws. I had put a JVC w/ blue tooth HU in my 2006 Civic. It was great! They went with this model. The JVC you can press the phone button on the JVC and activate voice commands. From the time I have spent with them you cannot do this with the Sony. The JVC will start Pandora automatically on your phone by pressing one button. When I was reading the manual on the sony I did not see this feature. All of us are using Andriod phones. I have a a Razr Maxx (older model with JB). They have a Pantech with ICS I think. All of us are also on Verizon. On their Sony you have to scroll through the phone book to make a call-pressing button to navigate-taking your eyes off the road. In the JVC I could press the phone button and voice command the phone to make a call. I have traded the Civic in on a 2012 Focus with Sync. Sync is not as good as the JVC.

    Pros: Looks nice. Sounds great!

Cons: Bluetooth capabilities are a bit compared to another manufacturer I have experience with.

Great little stereo. I bought for blue tooth capabilities and ability to add SiriusXM in the future. I did not install the satellite radio, but all features work flawlessly. Install in my Altima was a breeze.

Cons: There are so many features, that it can be difficult to navigate them all.

Great little unit. I installed the unit with little issue into a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. I would recommend getting an adaptor that plugs directly into the factory wiring and attaches easily to the units wire harness, much cleaner, easier and affordable (about $5 with shipping) The instructions from Crutchfield were clear and concise. Sounds great, looks great and all of the functions work well. The display has many options but very simple to navigate and easy to see night or day. Price was great.

Pros: Has all the functions needed Good looking Great sounding Great price

Installed this radio to replace a 10 year old pioneer because I couldn't get the sound right, even with infinity kappa highs and a 12 inch sub. The improvement was huge without even tuning it. As soon as I turned it on I played a familiar song and heard things I couldn't before. It somehow pushes much deeper bass from my sub without making it move more and it reduced sibilance from my metal tweeters. (this was comparing everything set at zero on both head units) It also sounds smoother and cleaner. For the price, this thing is packed with processing capability. The 7 band equalizer allows you to attenuate harshness or bring out deep bass pretty effectively. I even turned off the high and low pass crossovers on my amps and just used the radio because it sounded better. You can choose 50-120hz for the high and low pass and even adjust the slope of attenuation from 1-3 to blend your highs and lows. The bluetooth seems to work fine on my Galaxy S4. Streams spotify and receives calls no problem. You can't change the color or do anything super cool like watch movies, but you can watch movies on your phone and stream the audio.

Pros: Cheap, 7 band equalizer, bluetooth, processing is impressive for the price

Cons: only 2 pre-outs, only lights up blue, probably gonna go deaf because music sounds incredible

Was a breeze to install, and just as easy to use. There are some minor bumps when it comes to using the USB cable and playing Spoitfy radio with an iPhone. It sometimes has trouble connecting, and you have to stop Spotify, play something in iTunes, and then return to Spotify and it will play. Not every time, but sometimes. I don't believe it to be the radio at fault, but more of the iPhone trying to sort things out. A bump none the less.

Pros: Improves stereo quality, allows for aux input, and USB input AND bluetooth, handsfree quality is great

Cons: Connection to Spotify can be a little frustrating at times

I purchased this item to replace my factory stereo. I drive an old 1998 Dodge Durango and the sound system was limping along on two speakers; one in the rear driver's door and one in the front passenger door. The little directional selector knob had a mind of its own. So, I researched on this site for two months. The Crutchfield "does it fit your car" feature was very helpful when I was considering the right system for my vehicle. This product is great. I can use Bluetooth calling, so it's completely hands free. The remote works well and helps me keep my eyes focused on the road. I ADORE the Pandora. I haven't listened to the radio. Don't need to. And don't want to. Great item.

Pros: The Bluetooth is amazing. Haven't used the app remote feature because I don't need to. Seems extraneous to me.

Cons: Setting the highs, mid range and bass on the equalizer was a little challenging. The manual doesn't give you a description of the 7 channels. But played with it and was able to tweak it to my liking.

    We love it!

Having bought and installed many stereos throughout the years I was really satisfied with this stereo. It seems to have great sound with the built in eq settings and looks pretty easy to operate. What I was really impressed with was the sound during a phone call. I called the person in the car and it sounded like a speaker phone...not like you're in a tunnel talking. I was very impressed with that. Install was easy with the GM adapter for the Grand Am and the finished product looked very nice in the car. I am used to the quality and build of Alpine. The faceplate on the Sony is a little light and has some portions that have a cheap feel to it. But regarding the sound quality it's great. The 7-band equalizer and digital time alignment is well worth the price and effort to learn how to use it. It even has a feature that will allow you to enhance the bass to your rear speakers, or use the rear speaker outputs to directly connect a subwoofer, how cool is that! Great Job Sony!

    Pros: Sound enhancements Microphone adjustments

Cons: Faceplate feels a little on the cheap side

I recently purchased a diesel pickup, and being a 6-speed manual I really wanted to have wireless bluetooth calling capability. I did quite a bit of research on this product and others, but ended up going with this one. Once this was installed I have definitely been impressed with this stereo. The bluetooth works as if it was a factory install and the people on the other line thought I was still talking on my phone like regular. I was slightly concerned with the noise pollution released from my truck, but it has not been a complication at all. This stereo was easy to use and very easy to set up. I also installed the App on my galaxy and it works very well. I have not spent much time experimenting with it so I am sure there are many more things it is capable of that I have yet to discover. My next step will be speakers to compliment the capability of this new stereo.

Pros: Wireless bluetooth that works like a factory option. Stylish/clean look

Cons: It beeps three times after you shut your vehicle off, you can get this turned off but I have been to busy to mess with it and it has not bothered me that much.

Wow, this is such a massive upgrade from my factory stereo (with tape deck and no CD), that I think I'd be normally knocked over with appreciation for every little thing about this receiver. And for the most part, I'm very impressed. The sound quality is really good, the value is tremendous, and it was very easy to install in my 1997 Avalon. I've got to knock it down to 4 stars overall, however, due to the "Ease of Use" issue. It's not easy to figure out how to simply adjust the bass, treble, and midrange levels. I appreciate that Sony wants to provide a lot of sophistication with this thing, but at times, it's too much and too confusing. Eventually, you can figure it out, but it ain't easy when all you want to do is give the Black Keys a little more bass. Also, one thing I don't like is that if the stereo decides you should be on some other menu than the main one, you can't physically turn down the volume unless you hit the "Source" button first. Sometimes, you want to change the volume in a hurry, and you can't always do that on this unit. Bit of a drag. But overall, I'm very happy with this purchase.

Pros: Ease of installation, value, sound quality

Cons: Ease of use; weird ability to not adjust volume

    Good for the money!

You get what you pay for, and maybe a little extra with this head unit. It's great for the price, but still leaves you wishing you just spent a bit more for something with better controls - the "App Remote" app on my iPhone is utter garbage.

    Pros: Great for the price

Cons: USB and Bluetooth control of iPhone is terrible using the app.

This head unit is great! I tested the Pandora control a little and played with Sony's App Remote app for Android a little on my phone. The call quality is excellent and I love the way it pulls my phonebook data from my Android phone and lets me store numbers in the six preset buttons for speed dialing from the head unit. For the price you really can't beat it. It's hard to find a head unit for that price with Bluetooth, USB, and Aux in connectivity let alone one that comes with a remote, mic, as well as full Android and Pandora support. I have the mic installed where the ceiling meets the windshield right above the rear-view mirror. I only tested it a little last night but the sound during phone calls is loud and clear on both ends. The phone call audio out comes from the front speakers only but this is by design as I found in the manual and I may be happy for that when our 2 and 4 year old are asleep in the middle/back. I only got it installed in the last week and since I don't drive the van to work I haven't had much chance to use it other than testing. So far I am very happy with the head unit and would strongly recommend it!

Pros: - The sound quality sounds great to me! - It has a "DM+" feature to upscale and/or improve the sound of digital audio - AppRemote for Android allows control from Android device and some control of Android device from the head unit - Plays audio from any device that support Bluetooth audio out, USB flash drives, or Aux in as well as CD's and Radio - Full Pandora control without even installing the Sony AppRemote - bright, easy-to-read display - includes mic for Bluetooth phone calling - lo

Cons: - It's not too hard but I think it could be easier to use. - The default options have the "Demo Mode" and "Caution Alarm" enabled. The demo mode lists features on the display every 5 minutes if you haven't pushed a button for five minutes. The caution alarm beeps loudly three times every time you turn off your car without removing the faceplace. Thankfully, both of these very annoying things are easy to disable! - The display is not a dot matrix display so it's limited to one line of text.

I was impressed with this system. Installed it within an hour in my 2005 Hyundai Elantra. My factory speakers sound amazing now! This system upgraded my old car and now makes me feel up to par with technology. I was quite impressed with the Sony MEX-BT3100P. It was just about the cheapest system I could find with the features I wanted (bluetooth controls, CD, aux, usb) from a brand I trusted, so I wasn't sure what to expect - but so far everything's working great.

Pros: Sounds great, near flawless integration with my android phone, easy front-access usb and aux inputs.

Cons: It sometimes forgets where it was on the USB drive, starting over at the beginning. When listening to audiobooks with long tracks, that can get rather annoying. My workaround - always turn the unit off before turning off the car. So far when I've done that, it's always picked up where it left off.

I have a tumor in my ear and had a lot of trouble hearing with my cell phone blue tooth and having the Radio, it comes through the car speakers and it's fantastic to be able to make/take calls in the car. The minute I plug the faceplate in the BT connects automatically. Great sound and handles my old iPod classic perfectly. I can toggle between albums and everything. I commute and have some audiobooks that I wanted to listen to and didn't really like headphones. Plus, when I'm on the phone, it automatically stops the music/story and picks up when I'm done. I hope it lasts a good, long time! Price was great, free shipping, free wiring harness and free dash mount.

This Sony Mex- BT3100P is amazing. Once set up the Bluetooth phone feature just works flawlessly without any button pushing or repairing. I leave my phones Bluetooth on constantly jump into the car, start the engine and I am hooked up before I put it in gear! I bought this unit for the Blue Tooth capabilities. I upgrades from a Pioneer that had faceplate contact issues in cold weather. The Sony works great and I am very happy with the Blue tooth connection with my IPhone 4. I do not like the app for the IPhone which helps control the deck when the IPhone is plugged into the USB. Also, I have chose not to use the Pandora application on the Sony as a source. It is much easier to just us the Bluetooth audio source. The sound quality of the Sony is not quite up to the Pioneer, although I am still learning how to adjust the bass and treble, and I can't seem to find a preset on the amp that I really like. Overall not bad for the price, I like to be able to charge my phone and use it with the USB port.

Pros: Good Bluetooth, fairly easy to set up.

Cons: Phone sound quality is not great, Pandora controls are awkward. Not certain about sound quality.

This is a great radio. I purchased it to replace the factory unit in my 1999 silverado 2500, it is a big upgrade. The part I like best is the bluetooth phone, a big safety upgrade, hands free. I don't even need to get take the phone out of my pocket when I get into my truck (no more doing the wiggle schmiggle when it rings and I'm driving and forgot to take it out). This truck has poor storage built into the dash, and since the radio is a single din, I decided to make a custom bracket which left me room for a good size(8 in x 1 1/4 in) pocket on top. I hacked the OEM radio sheet metal and spot welded it to the Sony bracket, just took me 10 mins(I have a workshop, not for everyone) and presto slide in and pocket on top!. The bracket and faceplate that came with the radio were serviceable, but this let me improve on Chevy's poor interior design and make it my own. The wiring harness that came with it was very easy to hook up, thank you Crutchfield. I have installed three or four radios in the past and this was by far the least hassle, I would say easy. I think that if I hadn't wanted to make my own mounting, and just used what came in the kit including the brackets, I could have done it in less than an hour. Few products impress me as making my life better, but being able to have a cell phone conversation while driving and finding it no worse than if the person was right there is a big deal to me.

Pros: The bluetooth is great, paired with my Iphone 4s on the first try, the mic has good sound and noise cancelation in my truck ( I put it on the top of the window pillar trim piece) and it pairs with the radio to make or answer calls automatically when I get in the truck, radio on of course. Music sounds great, also plays from the songs on my phone over bluetooth. Radio has great reception.

Cons: I still haven't figured out all of the features, it should be able to control my music on the phone, but I think I will need to read the manual to figure that out. It has more features than I could use, but a simple balance (left right) control might be nice also. It is such a big upgrade though that it might take me a while to get around to figuring it out, I so happy with the unit....

Product was straight forward to hook up and sounded great once installed. I really like that it has a 7-band equalizer so I can tweak the sound. It also does a great job with the listener position settings. Only drawback for me was that I bought it to use with my phone for streaming pandora over bluetooth, but it will not recognize my older android model. I will be getting a new phone in a few months anyway though.

Pros: Easy to instal, sounds great, great programability for tweaking sound.

Cons: does not work with all bluetooth phones. A list is available through the sony website.

The only problem is that the documentation is minimal and bot alwats clearly written..Install was a breeze, but I'll be working on how to use the features for months. I Purchased this radio to stream bluetooth audio from my new samsung S4. I compared this with radios from pioneer, jvc and others. This radio had the best app and most compatibility with android phones. It works great, the streaming audio and bluetooth capabilities work well. To reconnect your phone, you just push in the volume knob for 2 seconds. I use Rhapsody on my phone. I can download songs to my S4, then stream them without using my cell carrier. Pandora works well too,but uses your cell carrier air time. The usb and aux input make it so flexible.

    Pros: Compatibility,sound quality,features

    Cons: None

I just installed and I would like to get more bass. The OEM had more, so it may just take a little more messing around with the unit. From the time UPS delivered to the time I walked out of the garage, it took 2 1/2 hours. A lot of reading directions was involved. The wiring part of the directions could have been clearer. I like the way Crutchfield does business. I did have to call for help on installing the radio in the faceplate, and it seems bolts holding the radio would be better, but it will probably hold for now.

    Pros: Looks nice

    Cons: Would like more bass

    Works for me...

This is...uh...the fourth Sony I've bought (all at Crutchfield, thank you!) and the third different model. I buy them for work vehicles that come stock with just AM/FM. I've progressed through the years from needing the AUX input and ability to play MP3 and WMA formats to relying on the USB input a LOT to now...Bluetooth! I know BT isn't new, but I only have to buy a new stereo every three or so years. As always, install kit from Crutchfield and instructions were great. It's another really good inexpensive stereo from Sony that has a lot of functionality. See my pros and cons below.

Pros: Has all the input/options you really need.

Cons: While the list of cons is longer than the pros...this doesn't mean it's not worth buying. What I don't like about this Sony compared to previous models is the use of the buttons and the way the menus work. The menus are hard to navigate. I don't like that the "off" and "source" button are the same (you have to hole the button down to turn off). And when you ARE cycling through the sources, it'd be nice to disable the ones you don't use...

Very please with this unit,I have always purchased Sony head units, so functionality from unit to unit remains about the same. I did not install the steering wheel adapter, the remote has more functionality that I am used to.I am one for Not reading ALL the instructions, only when I need a little help. Set up was easy, Bluetooth pairing with multiple phones was easy, the 7 band EQ was very good, Bluetooth with Droid Razr M and I-phone 4 works very well, sound quality was very good, I installed the microphone on my visor. Also Installed Fosgate 1683 Punch series speakers front and rear and a Sound Ordinance M-4050 amp.

Pros: Excellent value, Had a Sony in my last truck for 12 years, didn't skip a beat!

    Cons: None so far

I purchased this to replace a Mach 460 head unit in a 1999 Mustang GT convertible. I wanted MP3 capability but also bluetooth, which I'd never had before. I used the adapter kit that uses the Mach 460 factory amps and it sounds great. The factory head unit was very muddy but the Sony is nice and clear but can still deliver thump to the rear speakers in sub mode. It was very easy to install in my car. Bluetooth can't be beat! Streaming from my Galaxy S3 is awesome and bluetooth calling and receiving is a real treat. I placed the mic on the top of my steering column behind the steering wheel and was able to hide the wire from under the radio and under the dash to the column without taking anything apart. The mic works well, even with the top down, windows down and V8 humming loudly at 70 MPH! I agree with most reviewers that say the control layout could be better but it's usable and the features are very good. Crutchfield service was great as I received a DOA unit where the knob didn't work and they sent another one right away. I put the second one in the basket, plugged it in and it worked right away. I am likely going to order a second MEX-BT3100P for my SUV.

    Pros: Price, features, value.

Cons: Interface takes some getting used to.

I needed to do a lot of internet searching to get complete instructions to install the gear. But once I figured out all of details to take my car apart, everything worked like clockwork. I purchased the unit to add features to my car that I wanted (USB/iPod playback and bluetooth calling). However the unit actually made my stock speakers sound better! In the images presented, the buttons looked small. That made me nervous. However the buttons are perfectly serviceable, no complaints. Very pleased with the experience.

Pros: The unit worked fine. No issues.

Cons: Color selection for the trim would be nice.

Got this mostly for the Bluetooth connectivity for music and hands free calling, and it works great. Everything works as advertised. I replaced a stock 2010 Corolla stereo with stock speakers with this stereo and the sound quality is about the same. Crutchfield's support was great during the install.

Pros: Inexpensive, works as advertised, Bluetooth works great.

Cons: I would like the USB flash drive display to have more options to view by folder, and shuffle all tracks not just tracks for a specific album.

I put this stereo in a big rig. I wanted something I could use with my phone to play music and take phone calls while driving. The music end of it is wonderful and exceeds my expectations. The bluetooth phone feature works well,I love that I can make phone calls with the remote control. The factory microphone that came with the stereo works ok in the truck if I lean forward and speak loudly, I think it would work great in a car but doesn't quite have enough noise canceling for tractor trailer use. All in all I would still buy the stereo again if I need another one.

Pros: Ease of connection with phone bluetooth. Phone app for android. Pandora bluetooth feature. The many sound adjustments.

Cons: None that I've found. The microphone not working the greatest in the rig doesn't count as a con because it was meant for cars not rigs.

Installed this radio in my '99 Cherokee Sport. Over all, I lke this radio very much. I would like to have wireless hands free BT, but the microphone mounted easily to the visor. Great sound with aftermarket speakers; even stock speakers sound better!

Pros: Ease of installation, connection of adapter wiring, great fit in stock location! Good sound.

Cons: Going through menus on screen can be confusing.
