Our take on the Sony Xplōd™ MEX-BT3900U

by Ken Nail
Sony

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

The Sony Xplōd MEX-BT3900U CD receiver uses Bluetooth® technology to enable hands-free calls in your car with your compatible phone. You'll hear your callers through your car's speakers, and answer just like they're sitting next to you. The result? You'll drive more safely with your hands on the wheel and your phone stashed away. Plus, if you've got a smartphone or other device with Bluetooth, you can stream your music to the Sony without having to plug in.

Front USB input
The front-panel USB input features Sony's 1-wire connection — plug in your player and enjoy convenient control of your music. Sony's search tools whip through your files to find the tunes you want quickly and easily. You'll find Jump Mode particularly handy if you've got a large music library, as it allows you to jump through your playlist in 10% increments.

Soundshaping tools
If you're into tweaking your sound, you'll find a host of tools in Sony's Advanced Sound Engine. You can adjust the overall tone with the EQ7 7-band equalizer, and then use tools like Listener Position calibration, Dynamic Loudness, and Rear Bass Enhancer to customize your listening experience to your own tastes.

More listening options
You can add Sony's satellite radio tuner to enjoy programming variety and commercial-free music. If you're into earthbound radio, Sony's HD Radio™ tuner gives you access to improved sound quality and extra programming from participating AM and FM stations in your area. Use the handy front-panel auxiliary input to connect a portable satellite radio, MP3 player, or another audio source.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Sony, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

CEA2006 Compliant Amplifier: The power specifications for the Sony Xplod MEX-BT3900U are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the MEX-BT3900U are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

The Custom EQ7 mode allows you to make your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of seven different frequency bands - Band1 (63Hz), Band2 (160Hz), Band3 (400Hz), Band4 (1kHz), Band5 (2.5khz), Band6 (6.3khz), and Band7 (16.0kHz).
    • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far
    • RBE (Rear Bass Enhancer): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.

    • DM+ Advanced: DM+ Advanced improves digitally compressed sound by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process (works only for USB).

Great deck. I noticed the sound was better than my previous set up, great customizing from led color to graphic equalizer. The bluetooth set up is simple and USB mode is the best for holding alot of music folders.
    Pros:
    All of listed above.
    Cons:
Toggling through the menu is a bit confusing as there are quite a few random buttons.

am very pleased with my new radio- took bit of time to work out how to get to the various options- the only negative is to keep having to press source button whilst driving to locate the functions, also no-one seems able to help me with inputting my most used contacts into he pre-set. We came to conclusion it cannot be done but as all the other bluetooth stuff works and presets I am not convinced!
    Pros:
great sound, bluetooth works well even with traffic noise on turnpike in my convertible- I have the external mic installed and once i have started playing music from either iphone or flashdrive the fact I have to keep pressing source to change music functions is irrelevant
    Cons:
cannot get phone numbers into pre-set

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver for my wife, who wanted a quality Bluetooth stereo. I have yet to stop receiving her appreciation. The Sony XplodT MEX-BT3900U has more than exceeded our expectations. I give this receiver five stars. With Crutchfields clear and percise installation guide the installation was a breeze. I will continue to go to Cutchfield for all of my car audio needs. I have never been dissatisfied with any of my Crutchfield purchases.
    Pros:
Bluetooth works perfectly, music quality is far better than a factory system.
    Cons:
A bit complex, diffacult to navigate if you not used to a more complex unit.

Bought this for my daughter for Christmas. The accompanying kit/instructions/wiring parts fit perfectly. Took an hour or so to install, but everything fit, and it worked first time. The only thing I might mention, it that the stereo is complicated enough that she made a cheat sheet to have handy in the car to help remember all the functions.
    Pros:
    Excellent sound, Works great.
    Cons:
    Pretty complex.

Purchased a 3700 several years ago. Felt confident in purchasing the 3900 for my grand daughter's '08 mustang. After purchase found out it was a discontinued model. That didn't matter to me because of my confidence in previous purchase. Only disappointment was bluetooth voice recognition. Even with separate mic it was worse than my old model. Installation was easy with Crutchfield accessories, instructions, and "You Tube" videos.
    Pros:
A solid Sony product. Grand daughter very happy.
    Cons:
    Voice Recognition stinks.

    A good choice

Great combination of features for the money. Compatible with Metra ASWC, front panel USB, RDS and streaming BT were all must haves. Don't need a CD changer, when you can just plug a 16GB USB stick in and leave it. Even shows the song titles. Strteaming FLAC tunes form my Android phone really makes a big improvement in sound quality. Just routed the mike through a small hole in the back of the storage bin in the Tacoma kit and taped it to the side. People say the sound is good and I didn't have to fish wires through my dash.
    Pros:
    All the above.
    Cons:
I expected more in the way of instruction fro Crutchfield from all teh talk on the web. Really just mediocre to downn right unacceptable for the ASWC. Called and emailed their miserable customer service twice. Had to flex the front of the Tacoma face plate to align with the dash. Hoping it does not stress crack. ASWC hits some random stations when I use the steering wheel controls between my presets. I'm hoping a better ground will fix that. Beeps on power down are annoying, but tolerable.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to replace the stock radio/tape player in my 2001 Expedition. My biggest requirement was Bluetooth, and it had to stream music from iPhone. The "streaming" option narrowed the choices down to 3. Overall I am super happy with this unit. Once my iPhone was paired, it now seamlessly and without effort re-connects to the radio on its own. I just have to press one single button to get the music started from the last place I left off. I've had it in about a month now, and it's been great. The optional extended visor-mount mic is a must, though. The controls didn't take me very long to learn, I only had to consult the instructions once or twice. The display design could use some work; for example I listen to a lot of AM talk shows, and you can't set the display to show you the call letters of the station, AND the time. Also, some of the function labels on the buttons are not backlit, so I've actually had to take a flashlight to the radio once or twice to see what a certain label said. Overall though I'm really happy with this unit. I didn't think I had it in me install the thing, but I did. I had my buddy who uses a solder iron for a living, solder the harnesses together. After that, I had the radio installed in the truck in about 45 minutes.
    Pros:
Bluetooth and streaming work great; Volume knob has a nice rubbery grip on the outside, makes volume changes easy when your truck is bouncing around
    Cons:
Like previous posters mentioned, only display color options are blue and red, doesn't match my Ford green dash and panel lights at all. You'd think in this day and age....

    Stopped working after 3 months

Written By Nick, Hopatcong, NJ on Thursday, January 12, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked fine for 3 months, then I lost the left rear channel. I checked my wiring and speaker and they checked out fine. I called Sony and was told to ship it back at my expense and after they receive it, it will be 7 to 10 working days then returned. So, overall we're talking 3 to 4 weeks with the shipping time included (NJ to TX). I know Sony has an exchange policy to send out a refurbished model for my defective model, but was told my unit did not qualify. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was transferred from Support to Customer Relations who gave me the same return policy and also did not know why my unit was not qualified for the exchange program. I could understand if this unit was 9 months old, but being in my spare car it was used maybe 45 times before breaking. After dealing with the three representatives from Sony customer service I will never buy another Sony product again and I'll be sure to tell my friends. I don't think my requests were out of line. I believe they were reasonable.

I wonder if being discontinued has something t do with it??????

    Buyer beware.
    Pros:
Easy hook up with Crutchfield harnesses and kits.
    Cons:
Not reliable. Customer service is not willing to fix in reasonable amount of time.

    Very happy so far

Written By Greg, Phoenix, AZ on Thursday, December 15, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I haven't had an aftermarket stereo for many years. I prefer the factory stereo because they are usually simple to use and match the styling of the vehicle and it's existing controls. In my opinion aftermarket stereos always look to "extreme/harsh" (e.g. bright colored lights, strange controls, etc...) This unit is no different in that regard. I bought this because my factory stereo was starting to malfunction and I wanted the bluetooth functionality. I am extremely pleased with the bluetooth functionality so far, although I haven't had any real phone calls on it yet (only gimmick/test calls). It works great for streaming audio from my iPhone 4 (iOS 5) and I am really pleased with this functionality. I really like the fact that I have a built in USB charging port in my car now too. From my first impressions so far I would definitely recommend this unit and may buy another one to replace a factory stereo in an '08 Nissan Frontier (current factory stereo has no aux in).
    Pros:
The bluetooth audio playback and phone features work great with my iPhone 4 (iOS 5). USB not only provides an audio connection but charges iPhone. Installation was relatively easy in a 2003 Ford Focus Nice range of configuration options
    Cons:
Never really cared for aftermarket stereo design and UI Not "simple" to configure various settings (i.e. settings are under obscurely named menus)

I bought one of these to replace an old cassette unit such that I had Bluetooth capability. The unit is capable enough that I bought another to replace the 6-CD changer in our other vehicle. We are happy to have a common, and capable, system in each of our vehicles.
    Pros:
The Bluetooth connectivity works flawlessly. I play Bluetooth audio and use this as a wonderful hands-free set. The audio is quite acceptable, and if that is not good enough, the unit has a remote microphone port.
    Cons:
I had to use a red Sharpie (pen) to darken the white lights on the unit since they were too bright for my pre-dawn commute.

This is the head unit we needed! My wife's stock stereo went kaput. The stock system was never satisfactory, weak radio reception, CD player was first to go, ect...This Sony unit is awesome, easy to use, multiple inputs, my favorite is the Bluetooth features. I like how the music mutes for an incoming call, it even displays the incoming phone number & name. I also purchase the xamc10 external mic, I can even hear my son speaking from the back seat, even after concealing the mic. The kids also like to stream their ipod through the car's stereo.
    Pros:
Bluetooth features, clean outputs, multiple preamp channels for future expansion, and the price is right!
    Cons:
Wish it had green as a backlight color, since the vehicles console lights are also green, but we can suffice with the blue and red.

    Good Choice for Bluetooth Devices

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall this unit has good features for the price. I like the equalizer and sound tailoring functions. My last unit could never balance the separate rear speaker amp with the non-amped front speakers. this unit was highly tailorable albeit somewhat complex button and knob toggling used to adjust through the menu. Sony should just include the external microphone for bluetooth. It is a must have for decent voice quality. Also a problem with many units including this one, if bright sunlight is shining on the faceplate it is hard to see the display even on the highest available setting. I would still recommend this unit.
    Pros:
Good avaialable feature set including bluetooth pairing for audio and phone, aux input, and USB.
    Cons:
The main display could be brighter and more visible in direct sunlight.

This works well for the most part.

There are 2 bright white LEDs on the front panel (left side center) that I found distracting while driving at night. These make the dimmer pointless.

Bluetooth call quality isn't very good due to the mic being on the passenger side instead of the driver side. I also had complaints of echos on the other end of the line.

The single line display is a little archaic. The scrolling is distracting.

If you can live without an AUX jack, get the DSX-S300BTX. It's great.
    Pros:
    bluetooth
    Cons:
white LEDs are too bright, mic is on passenger side

I bought two, one for ea. car, along with the additional external mic. Overall, it is a decent product. Audio sound quality is above average to excellent, and the external mic is necessary, particularly in my truck. My only real complaint may be the button layout in terms of the tiny 1-6 on the bottom, as well as the distracting way one has to toggle between radio, usb, cd, etc. That being said, it works, and underlying quality appears good if you can live with these things.

Great radio at a great price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this radio from Crutchfield for my Volkswagen Passat. Installation was a breeze. The only thing they didn't include was any type of connectors to join the wires. They recommended soldering. I decided to buy connectors that included heat shrink on them. Just strip the wires, crimp them and then heat up the connector (I used a heat gun) and it shrinks down for a nice clean splice.

The Bluetooth works great. I have an I phone 4 and I can listen to Pandora or my IPod without any wires hooked up. The Bluetooth Phone works great. Synched up flawlessly and people say it doesn't sound like I am on a Bluetooth at all. Sounds like I'm talking directly into my phone. I did buy the external mic after reading other reviews. Seems like it is worth it. The beeps when you turn off the car are slightly annoying but not as loud as some people said. Not a big deal. Definitely worth the price and I would highly recommend it.

This head unit has exceeded my expectations. The bluetooth audio streaming works seamlessly and flawlessly with my (sometimes finicky) Droid X smart phone. The sound quality is good, and the three beeps when you turn it off are not annoying (some reviewers had complained about it). Overall I highly recommend this device. Also, in my Toyota Camry the ambient noise is apparently low enough that the built-in mic works fine for calls.

I really like this head unit and all its features and how it sounds, if you want good conversation yuou gotta buy the external mic. I had purchased first the Pioneer DEH-7300BT CD Receiver but I didnt like it because it wouldnt stream music using bluetooth. I gotta say though, crutchfield does a very good job, when I returned my first head unit to them for the exchange for the sony I had forgot a CD inside the head unit and I had already removed the head unit from my car when I realized that so I said, forget it, Im not installing this back just to get my CD(one that I really like), so I sent it back to Crutchfield with my CD inside of it. To my surprise after I received and installed the Sony receiver I received another box from them, so I open it and they sent me back the CD that I had forgotten, so THUMBS UP TO CRUTCHFIELD AND GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I purchased this receiver for my son's Nissan Versa. The deciding feature was the combination of hands-free calling and blue tooth audio streaming - we wanted him to concentrate more on driving then trying to answer his phone. Installation was no problem with the Crutchfield installation guide and installation gear. Pairing a telephone with the unit was a snap and I am impressed with the call quality (even using the built-in microphone). After seeing the features, audio quality and ease of installation my wife wants a 2nd unit for her minivan...

Absolutely disapointed. Big name, little performance. To begin with, 1-No one can understand me when on Bluetooth feature. 2-Other party's sound comes only from the front speakers makes it very annoying to the caller where they hear themselves. 3-Though paired, it has hard time keeping connected to the phone. Re- connection is pain. 4-Phone book or search functions do not always work. 5-CD's that perfectly play at other devices either skip repeatedly or do not play at all.

It can't be all that bad right? It sounds great with the combination of my Harmon Cordon system. Front usb is a great feature. I haven't tested the bluetooth streaming yet. I have my concerns.

I purchased this CD player because I wanted to be able to have hands free calling via Bluetooth with my I phone 4. From the installation to the operation of this unit I had no problems. The Sony 3900 works great! The unit makes and receives phones call with excellent quality. When I was getting ready to buy this unit I thought of buying the Microphone as an accessory but I am glad I didn't. The built in Mic works great. You do not need the accessory mic. This unit plays everything you want via Bluetooth. I can play Pandora, wunder radio, basically any app that I turn on the iphone the sound will play on the Sony. I'm very happy with the quality of the sound and how fast this unit is. Great unit at a very good price.

First of all, it was very straightforward to install. All the wires were all color coded and the their functions were clearly defined. My primary use for this radio was as an iPod player. It has a USB connector on the front that accepts the standard charge/sync cable that comes with your iPod -- nothing extra to buy. You can operate the iPod from the radio or use the iPod controls. It also has a standard mini-stereo plug for anything that you can listen to with head phones. You have to supply a male-male cable for that however. As a nice bonus, the unit can function as a bluetooth headset for a cell phone. Pairing my cell phone to the Sony was very easy. The radio shows the signal strength, battery level, and new message indicator. Taking a call while listening to the iPod is seamless: playback stops, the radio shows the incoming call, press the control knob (answer button), and take the call. When the call ends, playback resumes. Sound quality for the phone conversation is the best I have ever experienced with a bluetooth headset. Much better than the standalone units or in-ear headsets from Motorola that I have tried. Just keep the phone in your pocket, get in the vehicle, and you're ready to go. And, you there is nothing that you have to remember to charge.

My daughter has a 2003 GT Mustang with a Mach speaker systen. LOTS OF BASE. You car here coming home from a block away. After 2 fixes and 2 new replacements of the stock radio. I started looking for a radio that could out put the same base quality and sound with more options.OH by the way ford should be a shame of them selfs to put such a piece of junk into such a nice car "MUSTANGS FROM 1999 TO 2004". Went to crutchfield online type in 2003 Mustang and they recomended this one. It was a perfect fit. The radio out performed the stock radio by at least 10 time plus many more options. Thanks guy. Disappointed

Written By ICEinLAVA, Orange, CA on Tuesday, September 20, 2011

As much as i like sony products, i have been disappointed with their car receivers. there is an annoying reminder beep to notify that the face plate is still on when you cut power to the stereo. There is a long pause between files played on the USB drive, regardless of location. the integrated bluetooth microphone is located behind the removable faceplate, and is pretty useless anytime used. The Zappin and Jump Mode are more inconvenient than helpful. Difficult to set the phone presets on the radio.

The bluetooth iphone playback works wonderfully. mp3 playback from cds has a small pause between songs, that is unfortunate but tolerable.

Personally i wish i purchased another brand. And i am purchasing another brand stereo for my wife's car, considering all the issues the product has.

    iPhone 3GS & iPhone 4 compatibility

Written By rayvid, Chicago, IL on Tuesday, September 20, 2011

    READ BEFORE BUYING

Do not buy the Sony MEX-BT3900U system if you plan to use it to play music over Bluetooth using an iPhone 3G3 or an iPhone 4. Information stored in the music files, such as Artist, Song Title and Album name will not appear in the unit's display window during playback. It will only appear if the device is connected using a USB cable and the sound source is switched from BT (Bluetooth) Audio to USB.

The technicians referred to page 26 where it states: "Depending on the audio device, information, such as title, track number/time, playback status, etc., may not be displayed on this unit. The information is displayed during Bluetooth Audio playback only." My argument is that "MADE for iPod and iPhone" mark is printed on the box and the front cover of the owner's manual, meaning that this device was built for and around Apple's specifications.

The MEX-BT3900U will also not allow an iPhone to transfer contact numbers stored in the Address Book to any of the six preset station numbers - another useful feature of the unit that does not work with the world's most popular cell phone. Sadly, the main reason I bought the device was so that I could make handsfree phone calls AND navigate my music list without taking my eyes off the dashboard and looking down at the phone. I am returning the unit for a refund.

I bought this radio because of price and the great features it has. One of the best features is the 7 band equalizer. I love my music and I want the best sound possible, this radio gives me that option. Another cool feature is, you can set up the radio so you can use your rear speakers as a sub. I also love my Sirius so this radio gives me that option. Would highly recommend this radio.

I find the setup and operation for this head unit to be unnecessarily difficult. Setting the equalizer and speaker arrangement for a small TJ is hard to get the desired output. The ladder logic of the system is backwords in my opinion. The sound quality isn't all that great with the Polk speakers I purchased. I bet this system really needs an Amp to make it right. Next purchase, 5 channel amp.

the player came with two package of screws(4 in each bag) for the mounting brackets, make sure you use the right one. The trim ring can be mount with a little modify for a better finish look. On the wiring harness, you have to connect the yellow wire for the stand by power to keep the memory setting and the clock, plus the red wire for the ignition on off power.

Just replaced my factory radio with this receiver. Wow is all I can say. Installation was very easy thanks to Crutchfields excellent instructions. The receiver looks like it came with the car. The receiver has excellent sound and lots of it and although I am still learning how some of the stuff works, the things I have figured out like the Handsfree audio (i bought the external Microphone due to some reviews saying the built in Mic was not adequate) works very well. Having the ability to be hands free and listen to the caller through my speakers is very cool. The music even stops and lets you know that you have an incoming call. I even found I could call from the receiver because my Droid Incredibles phone book is available on the receiver. Again. Very cool. The major reason I bought this receiver was to stream Pandora, even if I had to use an Aux input to do so. I had several discussions with Crutchfield staff about the ability to stream Pandora via A2DP and all of them said this would not work with my Droid phone. I am glad to say they were wrong!!!! It works beautifully! I had expected to have to use the Aux input, but now I can stream Pandora wirelessly. This was worth the small price I paid for this receiver.

If you are considering this purchase, you won't be sorry.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great system ! I ran into a problem that neither Crutchfield or Sony had heard of. When using the bluetooth feature for my phone, the phones contact list is exported to the radio so you can search and call. My problem was that if I searched on "J" (for example) for John, it would bring up a small sampling of my phone list with many entries not contaning "J".

By tryng a different cell phone, I determined that the problem was that my Apple I-phone was not at the latest and greatest firmware revision. My I-phone is jail broken, so It is stuck at an old revision.

So, the problem was my phone, not my new radio.

I highly recommend getting an external microphone with the unit and using it rather than the built-in microphone. Its worth the few extra $$

i chose this deck for a few reasons...ipod control, built in BT, and mono subwoofer out...it had everything i was looking for and then some. i can't say how the bluetooth in the unit works because i bought the external mic but that setup works great. i was looking at kenwood and didn't really like the UI. i, previously, had a pioneer and one of the features i liked is that you could choose between controlling your iDevice from the deck or the device...the sony has that too. the navigation is quite simple and, once you get used to where everything is, it'll be like second nature. the mono sub out is perfect for transferring plenty of low end to my subs. installation was simple with the provided components and documentation.

I'm very glad I bought this receiver. I was looking for something to let me play music, podcasts, etc. from my Droid smartphone through the car's amp/speakers via bluetooth. (Had been using a casette adapter - how 90s...) This receiver does that perfectly, and plenty more. Plus, it was much easier to install than I thought it would be, thanks to the detailed instructions included.

I am very happy that I bought this stereo! I have had many different stereos over the years and this is by far my favorite. Easy to set up even without the instructions. I think the only thing I had to look up was the bluetooth sync. Bluetooth works and sounds great! It syncs up really fast too! I like that I can control the Ipod with the deck or through the Ipod itself. Makes it really nice for the passengers to find and play something. The built in high and low pass filters work well and help to keep me from blowing my stock speakers. I have a sub hooked up to it and I love the seperate control of it through the deck. Yes it has the annoying beeps when you shut the car off but it's not that bad. Sony should give us the option of turning that off! Other than the beeps I can't complain. Sounds great and all the features work flawlessly. Btw I bought the external mic so I don't know how the built in mic works.

This has decent sound, good options for audio customizing and the bluetooth feature works excellent. The phone book lookup doesn't seem to work properly, I put in a letter and it goes somewhere random on the contacts list. Some buttons to directly select the source(instead of cycling thru them) and turn the "loudness" feature on/off(instead of holding the select button down and turning it off in the menu) would be better. Also, the built in mic did ok, but that was parked with no ac on, I suggest getting a remote mic if you use the phone function.

    Installation Note

Written By AllenS, Dallas, TX on Wednesday, August 24, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works like a champ. Handsfree phone works great with my blackberry Curve.

Streaming audio via BT works great too. Even the skip buttons work and control Pandora!

The button labels under the bezel need backlighting. I'm sure I'll be fine after I memorize what buttons do what, but for now, it's hard to see these buttons, especially at night.

Installation note (at least for Chevy Avalanche/Silverado trucks): If your tuner plays, but the other devices do not (for example, the CD powers and plays, but you hear nothing), you have the wrong blue wire from the truck hooked up. The Sony manual is a little confusing regarding the amp and the power antenna wires.... you need the amp wire connected. The tech support number on the back of the Sony manual got me right through to a tech after hours who solved this in under 10 minutes!

As always, great job by Crutchfield sending me everything I needed to get the unit installed easily. Great instructions, kit, etc.

My stock CD player gave up the ghost a few months ago in my 2003 Saturn Vue. Terrestrial radio is horrible in this town in ways I can't describe in this forum. After a little research, I purchased this unit and the corded mic for the BT phone. The Crutchfield package arrived with everything needed for the install - I used the wiring harness adapter as a chance to show my son how to solder, but twist-nuts would work fine, too. The unit is slick - I can stream Pandora or NPR wirelessly via ADCP to my Droid Incredible, All flavors of CD's work, including AAC-burned copies (not DRM protected files, tho'). I bought a micro-small 16 GB USB drive for the front panel, and so I don't even need to drag my iPod around in the car (which also works on this thing!) The bad-- the front panel is too bright at night; you can dim the display (2 settings) but not the bezel buttons, one of which is a white LED button that lights up the interior. I'm gonna run over it with some black nail polish and see if that helps. 5 stars! Very Happy!

Thanks Crutchfield for making installation so simple. I have not done anything like this since I replaced the receiver in my 1966 Ford Fairlaine 30+ years ago. With Crutchfield's install kit and instructions I was able to replace the factory receiver from my 1999 Mercedes SLK with this Sony Bluetooth receiver in about 30 minutes! It looks great and greatly improved the sound from the factory Bose speakers. Bluetooth streaming audio from my Iphone is awesome, as is handsfree calling.

I am very happy with this stereo, it looks & sounds great. This is the 1st new stereo that I've ever had installed that sounds awsome right out of the box, I haven't had to change any of the equalizer settings at all. It's not as user friendly as I'd like, I keep having to refer to the manual to figure things out, but it's not overly difficult to use either. I connect this with my iPod Touch and operate it with my steering wheel controls & love how easy it is to use that and other USB input devices. I haven't tested the bluetooth features fully yet, but my Nokia smartphone connects effortlessly every time. It's also nice that the stereo's display shows the phone's battery & signal strength status.

This is my first aftermarket head unit in nearly 10 years... installing it made me feel like a teenager again, which was a bonus. I am using this primarily for the BT connectivity, and it links right up with my HTC EVO without issue. Seems like the BT audio takes a couple more seconds to connect after the BT phone. Calls are good and require a bit of elevated voice to hear once in a while but still really good. Google Music and Amazon MP3 stream without issue and I am really enjoying it. iPod controls are good as well, however I am still learning how to navigate through the songs via the unit. All in all this is a great head unit and I loved Crutchfield when I was a teenager living in the 30 minutes from C-ville in VA and I love them now.

Good features, but 2 very annoying problems

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So the stereo is good, great sound, lots of features etc.

But beware 2 major issues that Sony could have easily avoided:

    1) Whenever you turn off the ignition, it beeps 3 times. And you cannot disable this! It's supposed to be a reminder to take off the faceplate. Why oh why is this not configurable by the user? Wife is not happy!

    2) When you turn off the ignition, stereo turns off (so far so good). But one can not turn it on again while ignition is off! Crutchfield support says that this is "normal" for every car stereo - but in my 23 years of owning cars and replacing/using at least a dozen stereos (factory and after-market), every single one could be turned on without turning the ignition on. And yes, it's wired up correctly.

So these 2 totally avoidable issues really irk me - I'll hack around it with some switches and relays, but shouldn't need to do this. First and also last Sony for me unless they fix these in future models.

I love this unit. It's got so many cool features to it and I'm still tinkering with all the individual sound settings to tweak it to my liking. Install was fairly easy (with an OEA-4 Sosche adapter) on a 1996 Nissan Maxima, and customer support was very helpful and knowledgeable about the one question I had to ask. Sound quality is AMAZING with factory Bose Premium Sound. I get so much more bass as well as a much clearer sound than before. The loudness option is great, but I feel that it adds a little bit too much bass to even everyday songs and I am currently tinkering with the settings to make up for this. Overall, amazing product and A+ support from Crutchfield.

After much research, this seemed to be the best receiver I could put in my 2000 VW Golf. My requirements were (a) iPhone integration and (b) bluetooth speakerphone. After installing and testing, I'm very pleased! The sound quality blows away the monsoon system that was in there, and having a direct connection to the iPhone is MUCH better than the tape adaptor I was using (obviously).

The phone integration works great, and with the optional mic (attached to my visor) the sound seems pretty good.

Installation was pretty straightforward; not trivial, but it's the first time I'd done anything like this. It took a few hours overall, and no unexpected problems.

This is a very good receiver, I installed it in my wife's 02 F150 with no problems and it has a very good full range sound with good base on the factory speakers, it would have more with the kenwood 6x8 4 way speakers which I may add later on, for me it does not need any amps as it has plenty of volume. I highly recomend this unit and crutchfield as I saved around $100.00 by getting it here and putting it in myself.

    Great overall...not perfect

Written By Kevin, Bensalem, PA on Wednesday, June 08, 2011

I did quite a bit of comparison shopping and finally decided to go with this Sony unit. I have stuck by pioneer for many of my radios, but in recent years haven't been too impressed with them as far as design goes. I love just about everything about this system. I installed it into a 2004 Honda civic and what a difference! The sound is quite noticeably better and much more punchy as far as base goes. I was really surprised at the bass output without a sub...perfect for my taste. The bluetooth works flawlessly. I purchased the external mic and everyone says I sound great. Not to much to say negatively about this product except for that it's kind of bright at night and the warning tone is annoying when I turn the key off. Other than those couple of minor things though, this is a great unit with nice features. I would definitely recommend it.
