Sony

Our take on the Sony Xplōd™ MEX-BT3900U

The Sony Xplōd MEX-BT3900U CD receiver uses Bluetooth® technology to enable hands-free calls in your car with your compatible phone. You'll hear your callers through your car's speakers, and answer just like they're sitting next to you. The result? You'll drive more safely with your hands on the wheel and your phone stashed away. Plus, if you've got a smartphone or other device with Bluetooth, you can stream your music to the Sony without having to plug in.

Front USB input
The front-panel USB input features Sony's 1-wire connection — plug in your player and enjoy convenient control of your music. Sony's search tools whip through your files to find the tunes you want quickly and easily. You'll find Jump Mode particularly handy if you've got a large music library, as it allows you to jump through your playlist in 10% increments.

Soundshaping tools
If you're into tweaking your sound, you'll find a host of tools in Sony's Advanced Sound Engine. You can adjust the overall tone with the EQ7 7-band equalizer, and then use tools like Listener Position calibration, Dynamic Loudness, and Rear Bass Enhancer to customize your listening experience to your own tastes.

More listening options
You can add Sony's satellite radio tuner to enjoy programming variety and commercial-free music. If you're into earthbound radio, Sony's HD Radio™ tuner gives you access to improved sound quality and extra programming from participating AM and FM stations in your area. Use the handy front-panel auxiliary input to connect a portable satellite radio, MP3 player, or another audio source.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Sony, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility with this receiver may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the MEX-BT3900U are as follows:

  • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
  • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

  • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far
  • RBE (Rear Bass Enhancer): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
  • Dynamic Loudness: Dynamic Loudness refers to compensating for volume level and signal gain.

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

This has decent sound, good options for audio customizing and the bluetooth feature works excellent. The phone book lookup doesn't seem to work properly, I put in a letter and it goes somewhere random on the contacts list. Some buttons to directly select the source(instead of cycling thru them) and turn the "loudness" feature on/off(instead of holding the select button down and turning it off in the menu) would be better. Also, the built in mic did ok, but that was parked with no ac on, I suggest getting a remote mic if you use the phone function.

Nice product. Installed in my Jeep without any issues. The radio is very good for the money. The bluetooth works very well and people can actually hear me even with the top down. (I did purchase the extra mic.)

Thank you Crutchfield and thank you to all the customers who rated this car radio prior to my purchase! I could not ask for a better product or value for my money! I would recommend this product for its quality, dependability, and features that make it a true value at any price....let alone the small cost of this one!!!!!

I purchased this as an upgrade from the stock radio in my Honda Civic. I purchased it because of the features especially the bluetooth and USB iPod control. I have been very pleased with the performance of the radio, aux, iPod functionality and especially the bluetooth functions. I do have the auxiliary microphone for the phone and it seems to work great. Now I definitely have to change my rear speakers because it pushes the stock ones a little hard.

I love this radio. Sound is better than I expected. Blackberry sync'd up with it and voice quality on phone is excellent. IPod touch sync's up with it and sounds awesome. I use the USB a lot and it remembers were you left off even when removing the faceplate (I leave the USB drive plugged in). This is the best car radio I have ever owned.

My stock CD player gave up the ghost a few months ago in my 2003 Saturn Vue. Terrestrial radio is horrible in this town in ways I can't describe in this forum. After a little research, I purchased this unit and the corded mic for the BT phone. The Crutchfield package arrived with everything needed for the install - I used the wiring harness adapter as a chance to show my son how to solder, but twist-nuts would work fine, too. The unit is slick - I can stream Pandora or NPR wirelessly via ADCP to my Droid Incredible, All flavors of CD's work, including AAC-burned copies (not DRM protected files, tho'). I bought a micro-small 16 GB USB drive for the front panel, and so I don't even need to drag my iPod around in the car (which also works on this thing!) The bad-- the front panel is too bright at night; you can dim the display (2 settings) but not the bezel buttons, one of which is a white LED button that lights up the interior. I'm gonna run over it with some black nail polish and see if that helps. 5 stars! Very Happy!

I am very happy that I bought this stereo! I have had many different stereos over the years and this is by far my favorite. Easy to set up even without the instructions. I think the only thing I had to look up was the bluetooth sync. Bluetooth works and sounds great! It syncs up really fast too! I like that I can control the Ipod with the deck or through the Ipod itself. Makes it really nice for the passengers to find and play something. The built in high and low pass filters work well and help to keep me from blowing my stock speakers. I have a sub hooked up to it and I love the seperate control of it through the deck. Yes it has the annoying beeps when you shut the car off but it's not that bad. Sony should give us the option of turning that off! Other than the beeps I can't complain. Sounds great and all the features work flawlessly. Btw I bought the external mic so I don't know how the built in mic works.

Great system ! I ran into a problem that neither Crutchfield or Sony had heard of. When using the bluetooth feature for my phone, the phones contact list is exported to the radio so you can search and call. My problem was that if I searched on "J" (for example) for John, it would bring up a small sampling of my phone list with many entries not contaning "J".

By tryng a different cell phone, I determined that the problem was that my Apple I-phone was not at the latest and greatest firmware revision. My I-phone is jail broken, so It is stuck at an old revision.

So, the problem was my phone, not my new radio.

I highly recommend getting an external microphone with the unit and using it rather than the built-in microphone. Its worth the few extra $$
