About the Sony CDP-CE500

Dave Bar
Keep the party going for hours with Sony's CDP-CE500 disc changer. Load up to five of your favorite CDs, CD-Rs, or CD-RWs, and let the changer play each one straight through, or choose shuffle play for a surprise mix from any combination of discs. The player's Ex-Change feature lets you swap out up to four of your discs without stopping the music. Plus, the 'CE-500 expands your listening options with a front-panel USB port. Just plug in a flash drive loaded with tunes to play them back through your stereo. You can even transfer music directly from your CDs onto the flash drive. All recording is done in the MP3 format so you can fit hours of your favorites on a single drive.

Q
Can I connect the player to and listen to cd's through my Bose wave radio?
lew  Nov 11, 2015
1 answer
A
You should be able to connect this to the Auxilliary input on a Wave radio. The Aux input on the Wave is a mini-jack so you will need an RCA to mini-jack adapter. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1426RCA35A/Scosche-Mini-to-RCA-Cable.html

Can I play this through a USB connection to a Windows 7 desk top computer with sound card and Bose speakers?
michael  Sep 04, 2015

A
I am not absolutely positive - hopefully another user may know better - but I don't think so. I think the USB is only to transfer files, not play them through the PC. (To do what you are talking about, I do it through my receiver, And, yes, the PC is running Win7)

What are the requirements for speakers. What power? etc. I have old Sony shelf unit speakers, will they be OK?

They will be just fine. When we got the disk changer, we got the bottom of the line speakers which work very well. It just depends on how large your space is.

This unit is a CD player only, and will not directly power speakers.

Does this unit shuffle all songs on all CDs or does it just shuffle the songs on one CD and then play the next CD with or without shuffling the songs on that CD? If I'm playing Christmas music I want to shuffle all songs by all artists not just shuffle the songs by each artist.

I have had this unit for a couple of years now. It shuffles all songs on all the CD's loaded so you should not have a problem.

The manual (p. 17) says "In Shuffle Play Mode, you can play tracks/files in random order. You can select whether to play tracks/files on all discs (or a USB device), on a specific disk, or in a specific folder." I haven't tried it myself.

Q
can you record from cd to cd and cassette like my old pioneer?
dan  Nov 22, 2014

A
This is just a carousel CD player. If you had a CD or cassette recorder, you could connect it to the CDP-CE500 audio outputs to record. The only recording it does itself is to a USB device (thumb drive). Sorry for the late response, -- steve
stephen c  Nov 26, 2014
A
What do you mean record from cd to cd? There are RCA outputs and a optical output that can be used to transfer the audio into another source. There is a connection on the bottom right hand side of the front if you want to transfer music from the player to one of those stupid ipod or mp3 thingys.

Yes, Just load a thumb drive with music. Plug it in and select USB. Use the remote to select which song or folder to play. I put my music in separate folders and name them. Like all one Artist or a mix in each folder. I don't even use the cd that much, just the USB. This is a great piece of equipment! Hope you like it. Ed
edwin c  Aug 14, 2014

You can get a compatible memory stick from Sony. I think you can record music onto it from other sources and play it on the cd player. It has to be a Sony one for some reason.

One reviewer said some CDs would not play. I have a large collection of backup music that I have burned myself. I just want to be sure this player will be compatible with those CD-R discs. Would I have problems with them?

It will depend on the machine you used to record with. Each machine usesdifferent software to start the disc. The most trouble I've had was at the endof a CD I recorded it refused to go to the next disc. John

Q
Are the analog outputs active even when the optical output is being used? I ask because I have a main listening room where I do "critical" listening and want to use the optical output there, and have the analog outputs send the corresponding analog signal to my home's swimming pool area.
richard  Jan 08, 2014

A
No worries. I figured it out by obtaining a Toslink optical cable and connecting the CD player's optical output to an AudioEngine outboard DAC, and then connecting RCA cables from the DAC to the Aux 1 analog inputs on a Carver C-4000 preamp. Next, I connected the CD player's analog outputs to the Aux 2 analog inputs on the same Carver C-4000 preamp. I put in a CD and, lo and behold, a signal was present on both outputs, thus confirming that the player is - by virtue of its two independent output signals - capable of sending a signal to two separate zones.

Q
do you need to connect it to speakers? or are they built into it?
juana  Dec 15, 2013

A
You would need to connect this to another component to play music. This could be anything from a receiver and speakers to a simple table top radio with an auxiliary input.
