Bigger really is better! Just take a look at the oversized LCD display on Sony's CDX-F5710 CD receiver. No more squinting to see the track numbers. This display delivers all of the system information the way you want it: big, bright, easy-to-read — and in your choice of seven background colors. And don't worry about fumbling with the controls, either. The large control panel makes navigating through your MP3 folders and CDs easy.

Three sets of preamp outputs with high- and low-pass filters allow you to incorporate the CDX-F5710 into the most extensive mobile audio system. Use the "Aux Lite" input to connect an iPod, plug-and-play satellite radio tuner, or other portable music source.

Drive your speakers with four channels of 17 watts RMS power, and use EQ7 (seven preset tone curves and a seven-band EQ) to tame the sound. BBE MP processing (exclusive to Sony receivers) ensures that all of those digital music files will sound their best.

The CDX-F5710 is also compatible with Sony's CONNECT online music store, giving you a library of over 650,000 songs at your disposal. Just buy 'em, burn 'em to a CD-R or CD-RW, and you can play them back right from the receiver.

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this a few years back, self installed and all was great. After about 13 months the CD player died and could not read any CD's. I got pulled away for a while and so I wasn't able to address it until a few weeks ago. Suddenly it is playing CD's again! Okay- must have been the weather, dust, whatever. So after a week it decides to stop playing CD's again with the same "READ... READ... READ...READ" error.
I look on line and see a number of people have the same problem but most were lucky enough to have it happen while under warranty- unlike me.
Long story short, I can send it back to Sony and pay $120 to swap it out or I can invest the money into a system WITHOUT a known flaw.
I am buying something else from Crutchfield instead of reinvesting in this.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like the Sony cd player and my daughter LOVES IT! I bought it for her birthday and she spent all day sitting in the car listening to it. The thing that I really like was the customer support. I had a question about the connectivity of the stereo and the customer support knew right away what I needed to do and was very helpful and friendly. I will always buy my stereo equipment from Crutchfield. Thanks!

Worth it

Written By Anonymous, South Dakota on Sunday, November 20, 2005

I know most of the people out their think that we South Dakotans still ride around in horse and wagon things and dont need somethin like this. But i drive a '88 Bronco II and i installed this and immediatly afterwards got Sony Xplod mids for it and let me tell u, i know friends that have spent way more than 500 dollars on a system and all i did was install this, the mids and an equalizer/amp for it and THIS THING WILL BLOW YOU AWAY!!!! Just about the only thing that i can say is wrong with this thing is the push button sound selector, if u suddenly hit a bump in the road and push that button u have to wait for it to get out of the bass and treble settings in order to turn up the volume, this is the very first aftermarket deck i have installed in one of my rides but i have alot of other friends with Pioneer decks that are 75 bucks more and this keeps right with them.

The beeping with drive you mad!

Written By wd, Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday, November 16, 2005

Had the unit for a day and love it, except the famous beeping everyone has been talking about. Called customer services and they said only way to disable it is if you add an amp (how dumb is that?!). Unit is pretty much perfect in every way, but I think I'm going to return it and get a JVC or Pioneer.

Only thing that stinks is that the face has to flip down to insert CD. Previous review complained about cycling through inputs (Tuner, Disc, Aux). If you dont have anything hooked up to AUX, you can turn it off, then you won't cycle thru it!

Love It!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this about two weeks ago with a pair of Alpine SPS-080A and a pair of Sony XS-S160CX speakers for my 1992 Mustang Convt., and let me tell you its great. The controls are easy to use, and the sound is just lovely!!. The different color display is cool (especially at night) and the aux input is perfect for my ipod which i use all the time with it. Also love the preset equalizer (I have it on Xplod). Worth every penny!!

Good Stuff

Installed this head unit about two weeks ago, so far it's pretty good. I like the many display colors. It sounds good too. I still have factory speakers, can't wait to upgrade those too. The track ID is pretty cool, you dont have to remember the numbers/ names of your favorite tracks. But not every cd manif. is up on this yet.

A great radio!

Very inutitive controls for all radio functions. It very easy to navigate MP3s, stations, etc. The buttons are large enough and you can do this while driving. Many other radios have very complex controls. Sony got it right on this radio.

The display is nice and simple and large enough to display enough text. Chaning colors is pretty cool. You can also dim the display if you want to.

A great buy and I highly recommend it.

This radio looks great and when the night rolls around even better! With seven color choices to suite your moods you can't go wrong with this one. Great specs on the radio and easy controls to use and tune your setup. The price is a steal and it comes with a rebate, right now anyway. Enjoy !

Well worth it

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, this is a great sony. It really makes my mp3 discs sound almost as good as cd's, and with the EQ 7, my stock speakers in my 98 camry now sound like they could be aftermarkets. The DSO and BBE mp processing is what i like the most about this one. (It really does make my front spkrs sound like they are higher up)The different colors are nice, i guess the only negative i can come up with so far is that the buttons seem hard to press, maybe because it's new? I decided on Sony because i have a 5 year old Sony headunit in our other vehicle, it still sounds great and i have never had any problems with it. Overall, it may be a little bit more than your entry level hu's, but it easily has the most bang for your buck!

Simply superb! The installation was quick. I am a first timer. I installed it on my 03 Civic sedan. It took me about an hour. The techies were very helpful - even almost at midnight. I got the package the very next day of ordering! (free shipping too) and installed the same evening. I am very pleased and excited. The sound, display, operation everything is awesome. The colors are cool too for different moods! Certainly a good deal at such a good price

This head unit from Sony is awesome! I bought it today and I couldnt believe how much better the door speakers sounded. Before, my door speakers never had bass. Now the bass is so loud you would think I had subs! I am VERY pleased with this head unit and Sony made a great product. Also the colors are really hot, especially at night. Go buy this one!!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a Subaru 1996. I did have to cut the dash-board trim to accomodate the unit, but other than that it's a great little unit. I love the 3 pre-amp outs, the remote control, aux in feature and it's a great unit for the price.
cool colour function too. powering 4 speakers and a sub unit. Great unit.
Crutchfield has the best damn support structure as well, the sheets and emails and helpful tech support made this installlation as easy as 1-2-3! I love these guys! Thank you all.

The stereo is great and there is little I can say that the other reviewers have not covered. However I will state 2 things. The Crutchfield Technical support team is great and Sony instructions are awful. Monkeys on typewrites could have done better, but Crutchfield was great in helping me through the installation and the stereo is in and looks/sounds great!

I purchased this player to replace the tape deck in my 2000 pontiac grandprix, It works great, has good power, makes all my cds, even my mp3 sound twice as good as before. I was always a pioneer fan, but now Im a sony fan, you cant go wrong with this buy. This was my first purchase from crutchfield and I am a very satisfied customer.:)

Written By Lee, Jackson, MI on Friday, May 27, 2005

Wow, wow and did I say wow yet? Being an avid Pioneer car stereo fan because of the high rms power, I decided to give this a try because of the EQ7 and DSO feature (to really customize my sound) and I am really glad I did.

I was turned off at the power wattage this unit was rated at but when it was installed and I turned it on for the first time, I was all smiles from ear to ear and forgotten everything I liked about my Pioneer in my Corsica.

This is being used in my '05 Toyota Corolla with factory speakers x 6 (non-JBL)with no external amp or subs and the sound is just Fantastic! I can't imagine this unit sounding better but I know it will with after-market speakers.

The different background color-lighting for the display is way cool, an match with any color dash.

My only complaint is..when I push the source button, it cycles thru CD to Tuner to Aux even though I don't have anything in the auxillary (an annoyance for me, but a minor one compared to all the features and the sound this little unit puts out).

I'm a Sony-boy now!

I got the Sony CDX-F5710 for my 2001 Acrua Integra coupe in May. I chose this over the other models mostly because of the AUX input. I have already connected my iPod, and while Sony does not make a direct iPod adapter, the RCA-headphone cord works perfectly fine.

Definatley worth the money and has confirmed that I am glad I did not spend more on a pricier unit.

Sound is perfect looks ar great, and the colors are fun! Works with my XM also which JVC only has Seris. I highly recommend this product!

Wow, this is a really great head unit. It's the first Sony unit I've purchased, and I have to say I'm very impressed. 3 pre-amp outputs, EQ7 really lets you tweak your sound, DSO does an amzing job of making the sound feel like it's hitting you right at ear level. I was a little heistant at first because it has a little lower power rating with the built-in amp than other units, but you really can't hear any difference. Just a really great buy, I love it!

* A real KNOB to adjust volume and other settings
* Excellent tuner, really pulls in stations well

Best Buy

Written By Markeyse, Sylmar, CA on Wednesday, March 02, 2005

Sony proves why they are the best. Since Sony made the CD in the first place, it's only right that they have the best S-t-n for any CD player. Very clean. The LED display is beutiful. I love the EQ7 system that tweak the system sound with bass and treble controls. Connected with the 10 disc player (CDX-757) for control of 11 disc, and MP3 and ATrackplus is a great buy. great price. Great sound from my 5-1/4 (XS-1340H) and my 6x9's (XS-6940H) lets me know why Sony calls them "XPLOD!" Now for that subs....

Changer Controls

Drive S: The CDX-F5710 features the Drive S chassis platform. Drive S includes the CD mechanism, audio stages, 12 V power supply, and tuner section. The CD mechanism includes an improved suspension to resist shocks, a new motor that draws less power, and a fast new low-current pickup that improves durability and CD playback accuracy. The 52W x 4 S-MOSFET Power IC produces clearer, more accurate sound, less distortion, and a higher signal-to-noise ratio than previous designs.

Variable Color Display: The display backlight illumination can be adjusted to any of the following colors: light blue, blue, white (has a bluish tint), green, yellow green, red, or purple.

ATRAC CD Playback: The CDX-F5710 plays ATRAC3plus/ATRAC3 files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. Each ATRAC disc can have a maximum of 255 groups and 999 files.

MP3 Playback: This unit can play MP3 files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 150 folders and 300 files/folders. During MP3 playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag information.

BBE MP: When playing back MP3 files, the BBE MP circuit recovers and recreates harmonics, restoring the detail, warmth and nuances that existed in the original recording.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO): Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and higher soundstage. You can store the DSO setting for each source.

EQ7: You may select one of the following EQ presets: Xplod, Vocal, Club, Jazz, New Age, Rock, or Custom. For each preset, you can adjust the following frequencies: 62Hz, 157Hz, 396Hz, 1kHz, 2.5kHz, 6.3kHz, and 16kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from +10dB to -10dB in 1dB increments.

XM Satellite Radio Controls: This unit can control an optional Sony XM tuner. The optional tuner, along with an antenna and subscription, will allow you to receive XM Satellite Radio. XM Satellite Radio programming features over 130 channels of programming beamed coast-to-coast, including 68 channels of commercial-free, digital-quality music, and more than 60 channels of news, talk, sports, entertainment, children's programming, and information.

SSIR-EXA Adaptive Reception: The SSIR-EXA tuner is equipped with "Adaptive Reception". The Adaptive Reception feature has two modes ("IF Auto" and "IF Wide") for optimizing FM reception. The "Wide" mode decreases the tuner's selectivity but results in better frequency response. The "IF Auto" mode automatically adjusts the tuner for a good balance between frequency response and minimum station-to-station interference. The Adaptive Reception feature cannot be turned off.

Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the strongest signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency.

Station Memo: You can assign a name of up to 8 characters in length to each tuner preset station. Station Memos can be used with the List-up function to locate a station.

2 V Mono Subwoofer Preamp Outputs: In addition to the 2 V front and rear preamp outputs, this unit includes one set of 2 V mono subwoofer preamp outputs. Although there are two female RCA subwoofer outputs, the same signal is carried by both connections. A low-pass filter (see below) can be used to filter high frequencies from the signals output by the subwoofer outs.

High-pass Filter: The front and rear preamp outputs have a selectable high-pass filter that may be set to 78Hz, 125Hz, or off.

Low-pass Filter: The subwoofer preamp outputs have a selectable low-pass filter that may be set to 78Hz, 125Hz, or off.

Aux Lite Auxiliary Input: The CDX-F5710 has an auxiliary input on the rear panel, allowing you to connect a separate audio source, such as a portable MiniDisc or MP3 player, or the audio output from a mobile/portable DVD player. In the past, Sony receivers required a separate adapter, however, this unit's "Aux Lite" input allows you to directly connect the auxiliary unit to the receiver's stereo RCA input jacks.

Note: If a CD/MD changer is connected to this receiver, you will not be able to connect an auxiliary source without an adapter (158XA300).

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with a wire that Sony calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. When the dimmer mode is set to "Auto" and the illumination lead receives power, the display dims to a preset level. The display brightness is not affected by the vehicle's dimmer control. Also, the dimmer feature may be turned off, so dimming does not take place when the illumination lead receives power. You may choose to dim the display at all times by setting the dimmer mode to "On".

Note: For this feature to work, the unit's illumination wire must be connected to your vehicle's dash lights wire.

45-Degree Installation: For flexibility of installation, this unit can be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 45 degrees.

Wired Remote Compatibility: In addition to the supplied wireless remote, the receiver can be controlled by an optional wired rotary commander (item 158RMX4S). Once the wired remote is connected, you can use the menu system to change the control direction of the remote, depending on which side of the steering wheel you choose to mount the remote.

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is compatible with Sony Unilink CD/MP3 and MD changers. In addition, this unit can control compatible Sony Mobile Memory Stick players.

Multiple Changer Control: A maximum of 5 CD changers, 5 CD/MP3 changers, or 5 MD changers may be connected to this receiver. When connecting CD, CD/MP3 and MD changers, you may connect up to a total of 7 changers (but there must not be more than 5 of one type of changer). When connecting more than one changer to this receiver, you must use the Sony XA-C30 source selector.

CD Text/MD Memo Display: When used with a compatible CD changer and a CD Text encoded CD, this unit will display the CD Text information. When using a compatible Sony MD changer, this receiver can display disc and track names that have been prerecorded on MDs.

Disc Memo: When a changer with the Custom File function is connected to this unit, you can enter names, up to 8 characters long, into memory for up to 110 discs. After a disc has been given a custom title, you may search for the disc, by title, using the List-up function.

Auto Scroll: If the text being displayed exceeds 8 characters and the Auto Scroll function is on, the information will automatically scroll across the screen.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Note: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you must turn the radio completely off (this defeats keyed operation), or you may wire the accessory power wire of this radio to an alternate source of accessory power to retain keyed clock and face/button illumination operation.
