If you're looking for smooth sound with plenty of listening options in an elegant, compact design, then Sony's CMT-HP7 micro system is the perfect choice. The main component unit stands less than 10" tall, yet it holds a 5-disc CD changer, cassette deck, AM/FM tuner, and a powerful 120-watt amplifier. With its silvery finish and classy good looks, the CMT-HP7 will be a welcome addition to virtually any room decor, but it's the performance that really makes this system shine.

The CMT-HP7 features a 3-way speaker design — a real rarity with micro systems. The 4-3/4" woofer, 2" mid, and 3/4" tweeter ensure crisp, rich sound all across the audio spectrum. And if it's extended low-frequency response you're after, just engage the Groove bass enhancement.

The slot-loading design of the 5-disc changer allows the system to maintain its compact size. You don't have to spin through a carousel or wrestle with a multi-disc cartridge to trade out CDs — the changer mechanism is concealed inside the unit. Simply "feed" the discs into the narrow front-panel opening. Five separate eject buttons give you easy, one-touch access to all you loaded discs. And in addition to CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs, the changer also handles your long-playing MP3 CDs!

Other listening options include a single tape deck for your classic cassettes and a digital AM/FM tuner with 30 presets. Plus, a rear-panel aux input lets you hook up one external source and run the sound through the CMT-HP7. And an optical digital output lets you make pristine digital recordings to your MiniDisc or CD recorder.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Groove: This feature gives you more powerful sound with reinforced bass.

Preset EQ: This system has Rock, Pop, Jazz and Movie presets, allowing you to optimize the sound effects depending on the source you are using. The Movie preset should be used for soundtracks and special listening situations, while the other presets can be used for standard music sources. The EQ can also be set to flat.

Surround Mode: The surround mode widens the stereo effect to simulate surround sound from just two speakers.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the system off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 0-90 minutes in 10 minute increments.

Daily Timer: You can use the daily timer as an alarm clock to wake up to a cassette, a CD or the radio. Once the timer is active, it will operate everyday at the set time.

Timer-Recording: Once daily, you can record from a preset radio station to the cassette deck. The timer allows you to specify a start and stop time.

AM/FM Intervals: FM tuning is done in 0.1MHz steps and AM tuning is done in 9kHz or 10 kHz steps.

CD Compatibility: This unit will play prerecorded CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, or MP3 CDs.

Note: This unit can play 3-1/2" CDs but cannot store them.

MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2, Joliet or Romeo formats. Each disc can have a maximum of 150 albums and the unit will play no more than a combined total of 300 albums and tracks.

Tape Playback: This unit allows you to play Type I (Normal) tapes.

Recording: Using a Type I (Normal) tape in the cassette deck, you can record from a CD, the radio, or a connected component.

Speaker Design: Each speaker uses a 3/4" poly semi-dome tweeter, 2" paper cone midrange, and a 4-3/4" poly cone woofer. Each enclosure has a front-firing port for improved bass response.

Dimmer: You can choose from 4 levels of display brightness.
