Features
Direct Stream Digital (DSD)
Encoding: Unlike PCM
based technology (CD/MiniDisc/DVD/DVD Audio, etc.), Super Audio CD is based on
DSD encoding, which does not require decimation and interpolation filters. DSD
is much simpler and enables a 1-bit signal to be recorded directly. DSD encodes
music at 2,822,400 samples per second (64 times that of standard CD) allowing
you to hear sound with incredible detail and clarity. DSD combines the
advantages of digital recording with the best characteristics of analog sound.
2-Channel and Multi-Channel SACD
Playback: In addition to standard 2-channel CD playback, this unit will play
2-channel and multi-channel Super Audio CDs. During SACD playback, the digital
outputs do not operate; the analog outputs must be connected to listen to SACDs.
There are two sets of stereo RCA outputs for standard 2-channel playback, and
there is a set of 5.1-channel RCA for multi-channel playback. For multi-channel
playback, the 5.1 channel outputs must be connected to a multi-channel input on
a receiver or preamp. Multi-channel SACDs may have 3, 4, 5 or 6 channels of
audio.
HDMI Output: The Sony
DVP-NS3100ES features an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) output,
letting you enjoy superior quality digital picture and sound from one cable when
connected to a TV or A/V receiver with an HDMI input. You can use the HDMI
output to connect to a TV with a DVI input by using an HDMI-DVI adapter. Since
DVI does not carry audio signals, a separate audio connection is needed from the
DVD player to the TV.
Note: The DVI jack must
be HDCP compliant.
Video Upscaling: The player can
upscale video signals to High Definition quality 720p or 1080i and output them
through the HDMI jack. In the Screen Setup menu, you can select the HDMI output
as 720 x 480p, 1280 x 720p, 1920 x 1080i, or Auto (player selects the highest
resolution acceptable to your TV).
216MHz/12-bit Video D/A Converter:
The high-speed 216MHz/12-bit video D/A converter employs 8X oversampling for
much more effective noise filtering. The result is smoother gradation and a more
realistic picture.
Audio D/A Converter: This
player features a 192kHz/24-bit 2-channel audio DAC and
96kHz/24-bit 5.1-channel audio DAC.
Digital Audio Output Capabilities:
You can select a sampling frequency output setting of 48 kHz/16-bit or 96
kHz/24-bit. When set to 48 kHz/16-bit, the audio signals are always converted to
48 kHz/16-bit. When set to 96 kHz/24-bit, all types of signals, including 96
kHz/24-bit, are output in their original format. However, if the signal is
encrypted for copyright protection purposes, the signal is only output as 48
kHz/16-bit.
Audio Filter:
You can select a digital filter to reduce noise above
22.05 kHz (for sources with a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz), 24 kHz (for
sources with a sampling frequency of 48 kHz), or 48 kHz (for sources with a
sampling frequency above 96 kHz). The Audio Filter can be set to Sharp or Slow.
Sharp provides a wide frequency range and spatial feeling. Slow provides smooth
and warm sound.
Bass Management: This unit has
built-in bass management that allows you to adjust the speaker size, delay time,
and channel balance when using the 5.1-channel output.
Precision Cinema Progressive:
While other DVD players detect image changes at the scan line level, Sony's
Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the pixel level. The
picture is more faithful to the source, whether film or video, because separate
optimized algorithms are used to process the moving and still parts of an image,
resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving object that are virtually free from
motion artifacts.
Progressive Scan Component Video
Output: Progressive-scan video has less flicker and fewer motion artifacts
than the traditional interlaced-scanning method, resulting in a superior
picture. To take advantage of this feature, you must have a television with
component video inputs that supports the progressive scanning mode. This unit
allows you to choose Interlace mode or Progressive mode.
MP3 Playback: This unit will
play MP3 files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660
level 1/level 2, or Joliet formats. Each disc can have a maximum of 500 albums
and no more than 999 tracks per album.

brightness of selected areas
Picture Navigation:
This feature allows you to view pictures of the disc's
titles, chapters or tracks on a single screen divided into 9 sections and start
playback from the chosen title, chapter or track.
Resume
Play: The player stores the point where you stopped the disc and
resumes playback from the same location the next time you start playback. The
resume point is cleared when you open the disc tray, disconnect the power cord,
or the player enters standby mode.
Multi-Disc Resume: You can
store the point to resume playback for up to 40 DVDs and start playback at that
point, even if the disc is removed from the player and reinserted.
Instant Replay/Instant Advance:
The Instant Replay function is useful when you want to review a scene or
dialogue that you missed. With a single press of the Instant Replay button, the
player will go back 10 seconds and begin playing again. Likewise, the Instant
Advance function is useful when you want to pass over a scene that you don't
want to watch.
JPEG Disc Playback: This unit
will play JPEG files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO
9660 level 1/level 2, or Joliet formats. JPEG files up to 5760 x 3840 in Normal mode, and
Progressive JPEGs with up to 8 million dots are supported. The following
functions are available during JPEG disc playback: slideshow, zoom (2x, 4x), and image rotation, which allows you to rotate the
current image 90-degrees counterclockwise.

DVP-NS3100ES lets you display images in a slideshow. During a slideshow, you can adjust the amount of
time each image is displayed. You can choose one of the following duration
settings: Normal (6 to 9 seconds), Fast (shorter than Normal), Slow 1 (longer
than Normal), or Slow 2 (longer than Slow 1). In addition, you can select one of
the following effects to be used when viewing a slideshow:
- Mode 1: image sweeps in
from top to bottom
- Mode 2: image sweeps in
from left to right
- Mode 3: image stretches
out from the center of the screen
- Mode 4: images randomly
cycle through the effects
- Mode 5: next image slides
over the previous image
Parental

Inputs and Outputs
Notes
HDMI (High Definition Multimedia
Interface): The unit's HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and
digital audio all in one cable. This unit features HDCP copyright protection
technology, and must be connected to an HDCP-compliant device. If your TV has a
DVI input instead of an HDMI input, you can connect this unit to your TV using
an HDMI-to-DVI adapter. You will also need to connect audio cables to the player
because DVI is a video only interface.
Control S Input: This
unit has a Control S minijack input for use with compatible Sony components.
