Our take on the Sony DVP-NS3100ES

Sony designed the DVP-NS3100ES to deliver beautifully clear, lifelike video and audio playback. As part of Sony's high-performance ES Series, it boasts sophisticated circuitry and a high-quality build with an attractive brushed-aluminum front panel — all backed by a five-year warranty. You'll enjoy precise, detailed images and sound from all your movies and music.

The 'NS3100ES uses advanced processing to upgrade or "upconvert" DVD video signals to near-high-definition quality. It sends the upconverted signals to any TV with a digital video input. Since the picture stays digital until it hits your TV screen, you get cleaner, sharper images. You also get gold-plated analog video outputs, including a component video output, for a great picture with TVs that don't have digital connections. Built-in circuitry refines blocky, jagged edges into smooth lines for more natural image quality.

This capable player will make your music collection sound great, too. In addition to regular CDs and high-capacity MP3 discs, you can enjoy stereo and multichannel Super Audio CDs (SACDs). These high-resolution music discs deliver warm, detailed sound — your favorite artists and songs will sound better than ever. You can also turn off the video circuits and front-panel display to enjoy even clearer, purer sound from all your music.

Features
Inputs and Outputs Notes

Features

Direct Stream Digital (DSD) Encoding: Unlike PCM based technology (CD/MiniDisc/DVD/DVD Audio, etc.), Super Audio CD is based on DSD encoding, which does not require decimation and interpolation filters. DSD is much simpler and enables a 1-bit signal to be recorded directly. DSD encodes music at 2,822,400 samples per second (64 times that of standard CD) allowing you to hear sound with incredible detail and clarity. DSD combines the advantages of digital recording with the best characteristics of analog sound.

2-Channel and Multi-Channel SACD Playback: In addition to standard 2-channel CD playback, this unit will play 2-channel and multi-channel Super Audio CDs. During SACD playback, the digital outputs do not operate; the analog outputs must be connected to listen to SACDs. There are two sets of stereo RCA outputs for standard 2-channel playback, and there is a set of 5.1-channel RCA for multi-channel playback. For multi-channel playback, the 5.1 channel outputs must be connected to a multi-channel input on a receiver or preamp. Multi-channel SACDs may have 3, 4, 5 or 6 channels of audio.

HDMI Output: The Sony DVP-NS3100ES features an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) output, letting you enjoy superior quality digital picture and sound from one cable when connected to a TV or A/V receiver with an HDMI input. You can use the HDMI output to connect to a TV with a DVI input by using an HDMI-DVI adapter. Since DVI does not carry audio signals, a separate audio connection is needed from the DVD player to the TV.

Note: The DVI jack must be HDCP compliant.

Video Upscaling: The player can upscale video signals to High Definition quality 720p or 1080i and output them through the HDMI jack. In the Screen Setup menu, you can select the HDMI output as 720 x 480p, 1280 x 720p, 1920 x 1080i, or Auto (player selects the highest resolution acceptable to your TV).

216MHz/12-bit Video D/A Converter: The high-speed 216MHz/12-bit video D/A converter employs 8X oversampling for much more effective noise filtering. The result is smoother gradation and a more realistic picture.

Audio D/A Converter: This player features a 192kHz/24-bit 2-channel audio DAC and 96kHz/24-bit 5.1-channel audio DAC.

Digital Audio Output Capabilities: You can select a sampling frequency output setting of 48 kHz/16-bit or 96 kHz/24-bit. When set to 48 kHz/16-bit, the audio signals are always converted to 48 kHz/16-bit. When set to 96 kHz/24-bit, all types of signals, including 96 kHz/24-bit, are output in their original format. However, if the signal is encrypted for copyright protection purposes, the signal is only output as 48 kHz/16-bit.

Audio Filter: You can select a digital filter to reduce noise above 22.05 kHz (for sources with a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz), 24 kHz (for sources with a sampling frequency of 48 kHz), or 48 kHz (for sources with a sampling frequency above 96 kHz). The Audio Filter can be set to Sharp or Slow. Sharp provides a wide frequency range and spatial feeling. Slow provides smooth and warm sound.

Bass Management: This unit has built-in bass management that allows you to adjust the speaker size, delay time, and channel balance when using the 5.1-channel output.

Precision Cinema Progressive: While other DVD players detect image changes at the scan line level, Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the pixel level. The picture is more faithful to the source, whether film or video, because separate optimized algorithms are used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving object that are virtually free from motion artifacts.

Progressive Scan Component Video Output: Progressive-scan video has less flicker and fewer motion artifacts than the traditional interlaced-scanning method, resulting in a superior picture. To take advantage of this feature, you must have a television with component video inputs that supports the progressive scanning mode. This unit allows you to choose Interlace mode or Progressive mode.

MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2, or Joliet formats. Each disc can have a maximum of 500 albums and no more than 999 tracks per album.

Video Control: You can choose from the following Video Control settings:

  • Standard: Displays a standard picture
  • Dynamic 1: Produces a bold dynamic picture by increasing the picture contrast and the color intensity
  • Dynamic 2: Produces a more dynamic picture than Dynamic 1 by further increasing the picture contrast and the color intensity
  • Cinema 1: Enhances details in dark areas by increasing the black level
  • Cinema 2: White colors become brighter and black colors become richer, and the color contrast is increased
  • Memory: Allows you to individually adjust and store the following settings:
    • Sharpness: enhances the outlines of images to produce a sharper picture
    • Luminance Noise Reduction: reduces noise contained in the luminance element of the video signal
    • Chroma Noise Reduction: reduces noise contained in the color element of the video signal
    • Chroma Delay: adjusts colors that appear to have shifted horizontally
    • A/V Sync: adjusts delay between the picture and sound
    • Picture: changes the contrast
    • Brightness: changes the overall brightness
    • Color: makes the color deeper or lighter
    • Hue: changes the color balance
    • Gamma: adjusts the brightness of selected areas

Picture Navigation: This feature allows you to view pictures of the disc's titles, chapters or tracks on a single screen divided into 9 sections and start playback from the chosen title, chapter or track.

Resume Play: The player stores the point where you stopped the disc and resumes playback from the same location the next time you start playback. The resume point is cleared when you open the disc tray, disconnect the power cord, or the player enters standby mode.

Multi-Disc Resume: You can store the point to resume playback for up to 40 DVDs and start playback at that point, even if the disc is removed from the player and reinserted.

Instant Replay/Instant Advance: The Instant Replay function is useful when you want to review a scene or dialogue that you missed. With a single press of the Instant Replay button, the player will go back 10 seconds and begin playing again. Likewise, the Instant Advance function is useful when you want to pass over a scene that you don't want to watch.

JPEG Disc Playback: This unit will play JPEG files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2, or Joliet formats. JPEG files up to 5760 x 3840 in Normal mode, and Progressive JPEGs with up to 8 million dots are supported. The following functions are available during JPEG disc playback: slideshow, zoom (2x, 4x), and image rotation, which allows you to rotate the current image 90-degrees counterclockwise.

Slideshow Playback: The DVP-NS3100ES lets you display images in a slideshow. During a slideshow, you can adjust the amount of time each image is displayed. You can choose one of the following duration settings: Normal (6 to 9 seconds), Fast (shorter than Normal), Slow 1 (longer than Normal), or Slow 2 (longer than Slow 1). In addition, you can select one of the following effects to be used when viewing a slideshow:

  • Mode 1: image sweeps in from top to bottom
  • Mode 2: image sweeps in from left to right
  • Mode 3: image stretches out from the center of the screen
  • Mode 4: images randomly cycle through the effects
  • Mode 5: next image slides over the previous image

Parental Control: This unit allows you to set two kinds of playback restrictions for DVDs using Parental Control and Custom Parental Control. Parental Control allows you to restrict playback according to a predetermined level. You can select a parental control rating from 0-8, which is protected by a 4-digit password. Using the same registered password, Custom Parental Control allows you to set playback restrictions for a specific disc. You can set the same Custom Parental Control password for up to 400 discs.

Display Dimmer: You can set the display to Bright, Dark, Auto Dark, or Off. When set to Auto Dark, if you do not operate the player or remote for a short while, the front panel display becomes dark.

Child Lock: You can lock the disc tray to prevent a child from opening it.

Screen Setup:

  • TV Type: Selects the aspect ratio of the connected TV: 4:3 Letter box, 4:3 Pan scan, or 16:9.
  • HDMI Resolution: You can choose one of the following HDMI resolutions: 1920 x 1080i, 1280 x 720p, or 720 x 480p.
  • Screen Saver: The screen saver image appears when you leave the player in pause or stop mode for 15 minutes, or when you play back a CD or MP3 disc for more than 15 minutes. The screen saver can be turned On or Off.
  • Background: You can select the background color in stop mode, or while playing a CD, SACD,  or an MP3 disc. You can choose Jacket Picture (shows the DVD jacket picture if supported by the DVD), Graphics (shows a preset graphic), Blue (background color is blue), or Black (background color is black).
  • Black Level: You can set the black level for the video signals output from the composite and S-Video jacks.
  • Black Level (Component Out): You can separately set the black level for the video signal output from the component video jacks. This function is not available when the player outputs a progressive scan signal.
  • 4:3 Output: When TV type is set to 16:9, you can set the 4:3 output to Full or Normal when watching 480p signals broadcast in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Custom Setup:

  • Auto Power Off: When this feature is turned on, the player enters standby mode after being left in stop mode for more than 30 minutes.
  • Auto Play: This functions is useful when the player is connected to a timer (not included). When Auto Play is turned on, playback automatically starts when the unit is turned on.
  • Pause Mode: You can select from Auto (no jitter) or Frame (high resolution) for the type of picture output in pause mode.
  • Playback Memory: allows you to store Video Control settings for up to 400 discs

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on certain brands of televisions.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface): The unit's HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. This unit features HDCP copyright protection technology, and must be connected to an HDCP-compliant device. If your TV has a DVI input instead of an HDMI input, you can connect this unit to your TV using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter. You will also need to connect audio cables to the player because DVI is a video only interface.

Control S Input: This unit has a Control S minijack input for use with compatible Sony components.

Sony DVP-NS3100ES

Written By John, Cypress, CA on Sunday, February 08, 2009

Purchased this ES unit as it advertised to be compatible with my Samsung HD 50 monitor with DVI input. This unit did not disappoint like prior Panasonic unit. Upconverts my DVDs to my HD 720P screen, and looks almost as crisp as my BluRay on our downstairs 52in 1080P unit. Very impressive, very pleased, as it has brought new life back to my old plasma unit. Although sold as scratch and dent, unit appears perfect, new, and complete.
Thanks Crutchfield!

wonderful

Simply put, this thing is great. Bought a Scratch and Dent so save $250 off the price, and it arrived in totally new condition, just without the original box. All stuff included. Bought an HDMI cable as well. This player has brought new life to my DVD collection that I did not want to replace with Bluray. Saved me $1000's

Nice player

Written By hotdogstuff, USA on Friday, December 01, 2006

After having the Sony DVP-NS3100ES for almost 3 weeks, I can say it is a solid dvd player. I am using the progressive out so I can't get the full 1080i output but I'm impressed with the picture. I purchased this player primarily for watching movies so I can not comment on it's SACD side. This player would have received 4 stars if I did not have 3 problems. First and major problem is this player is fairly slow. When I mean slow, it takes long to boot up/power off/eject/play movies/pause/fwd & rev thru different chapters. Granted, were are talking about 1 or 2 seconds but sometimes it matters. The second is the player does not have a joystick to select menus so if your remote is unusable, then you are stuck. The third is truly not a problem, just a gripe because it does not give me the sony blue light when it detects a Dolby Digital/DTS soundtrack like my previous sony dvd-900v and my receiver Sony STR-DA7100ES. Remote is good so for the price I gave it a 3 star.

Sony wins the comparison.

Written By guido56, Covina, California on Thursday, August 17, 2006

I purchased the Sony NS 3100ES along with the Toshiba HD-XA1 and Denon 1920. They were all viewed on a 102 inch screen through a Panasonic PT-AE900U projector. Resolution was set to 1080 interlaced for all the DVD players as well. The connection was via HDMI on all players and I used standard DVD's for the first test. The Denon was beaten by both the Sony and the Toshiba in detail and gray scale accuracy. The Denon's blacks weren't good at all. Now the contest was between the Sony and the Toshiba. At first I liked the Toshiba player. It was slightly more detailed and looked nice. I tried an HD DVD on the Toshiba and it looked slightly better than the standard DVD of the same movie ( Cinderella Man) but wasn't that much of a differance. The Sony in comparison was slighly less detailed but was very close to the Toshiba. After making A-B tests with both of these players I noticed that the Sony was actually the more accurate of the two. More accurate colors and blacks ( gray scale).Shadow detail was far better than the Toshiba. Color accuracy was also better on the Sony. Noise and digital artifacts are equal on both players. Which means; both are excellent in this area. Bottom line is this.. Detail isn't everything.... This Sony player will more accurately convey what was on the film than the Toshiba. I really liked the Toshiba when I first used it but the Sony showed it's heritage and won me over. I hope Sony decides to make HD DVD players in the future because they can make fine equipment as evidenced by this moderately priced NS 3100ES. Try this on a large screen and you will see for yourself.

Sony DVP-NS3100ES

Written By customer009, San Jose, CA on Saturday, June 17, 2006

4 Star because we did not use Progressive or High Def.

DVD movie audio is good. Able to reveal the soft and the thunderous passages, able to show somewhat the richness of instruments individually and en masse. In well-recorded movie orchestral pieces, it does an admirable job of resolving the location of instruments in the orchestra. No brightness or hardness at the upper frequency range. Bass integration is superb resolving lower notes clearly and with solidity. No mushy boominess.

Video quality is good. Images are crisp, well defined and rich in tone. There is no irritating white-wash effect in bright scenes and it has good resolution in dark scenes. We did not expect to notice video improvements given we are using normal CRT (Sony Trinitron) TV so this is a pleasant surprise.

Overall, its capability knocks on the doors of more expensive and better "mid-end" DVD Players and for $500, it has strong value.

If you are into Ayre Acoustics D-1x, this player may not meet your expectations. If you are in the more realistic realm of Denon, Sony, Pioneer and you use their higher end gear, this player is definitely worth a look. If you are using a small and old CRT TV (no component video input) with old audio gear (no DD, DTS 92/24), this player may be an overkill.

Great Sony ES Quality!

Written By Rick, Lexington,NC on Friday, May 19, 2006

This is a VERY good DVD/SACD player. While I can't comment on the picture quality via HDMI output due to lack of compatible monitor, the picture through the component output is fantastic. I primarily bought this player for SACD/CD playback and it sounds superb for a music player. The sound is very clean and detailed. SACD's are the ultimate in high resolution audio. This unit has a very nice, solid build quality and a clean, uncluttered design. Highly recommended!

Great DVD Player

Written By Anthony, Rochester, NY on Wednesday, January 11, 2006

I upgraded my video equipment for Christmas, purchasing a JVC 40" LCD LT-40FH96 1080p HDTV, and this black Sony 3100 ES DVD player. I did not want the macroblocking errors of the Faroudja-based players.
And I read the non-ES Sony's had issues as well. So I bought this player and have been extremely impressed so far. Excellent color, sharp detailed images, and excellent 1080i upconversion via HDMI. It is a little slow, operationally, but I don't mind given the picture quality.

Shopping with Crutchfield is a great experience! They have a great selection, and all the technical information you could ever want!
