Our take on the Sony Cyber-shot® DSC-HX9V

For great pictures of first... and second honeymoons
When you and your spouse finally get away on a romantic vacation, you'll want to take along a camera that guarantees excellent photos but doesn't weigh you down. The 16X optical zoom lens on the Sony Cyber-shot® DSC-HX9V gets you close to distant subjects in photos and videos, so you won't miss a thing on your trip. And the camera finds the faces in your frame and automatically adjusts its settings to give you crisp, attractive photos of your favorite people. Capture fleeting smiles with the help of "smile shutter" mode, which automatically snaps a picture when it spots a grin. If your honey starts to squint as you take a photo, an anti-blink function snaps two quick shots, and then records only the one with your subject's eyes wide open.

Sunsets and candlelit dinners never looked so good
You've probably tried to capture those romantic dinners or dimly lit parties before, and not only blinded everyone with your flash, but made everyone look more like they were in a police lineup than having a good time. With the advanced CMOS sensor built into the DSC-HX9V, twilight is no longer something to be feared. The camera performs well in low-light situations, making your evening pictures look natural and fun.

3D Panoramic photos and 1080p HD movie mode
This camera boasts plenty of other cool features, too. You can create both 2D and 3D panoramic photos that reach beyond the scope of an ordinary wide-angle lens by sweeping the camera horizontally or vertically across your scene. The 'HX9V stitches several images together in-camera to form one seamless 3D photo that you can check out on your 3D TV when you get home. The DSC-HX9V also offers an impressive HD movie mode, which lets you shoot high-definition 1080p footage that'll look great on your HDTV.

3" LCD Screen: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V digital camera has a 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD display with 921,600 dots (resolution 640 x 3 (RGB) x 480). TruBlack technology makes your still images and movies easy to focus with brilliant quality. The LCD screen allows you to view an image before taking a picture and replay images that have been stored in memory. Through the Screen Display Settings, you can select a bright or normal LCD display with or without exposure data. The camera does not include a separate viewfinder.

Dual Media: This camera has 19 MB of internal memory. This camera is also compatible with the following recording media: Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo, SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. Memory Stick PRO Duo media with a capacity of up to 32 GB, and SD memory cards of up to 64 GB have been confirmed to be compatible with the camera. Class 4 or higher SD cards or Memory Stick PRO Duo Mark 2 media are recommended when recording movies.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG and MPO (3D) formats. Moving images with audio (stereo) are recorded in AVCHD format and MPEG-4.

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a back-illuminated, 7.77mm (1/2.3") color Exmor R CMOS imaging device with approximately 16.8-million total pixels and 16.2-million effective pixels.

G-Series Lens: Designed and manufactured to the highest standards of optical performance, the Sony G-Lens is optimized to perfectly complement the advanced image sensors and image processing technology in Sony's cameras. The DSC-HX9V camera features a wide-angle G-series lens that will widen your view and capture more of the city, landscape, or group portrait.  The lens has a 16x optical zoom and a focal length of 24mm to 384mm (35mm equivalent) for still images, 25-400mm for 16:9 movies and 31-496mm for 4:3 movies. It has an aperture range of F3.3 to F8.0 (W) and F5.9 to F14 (T).

Smart/Precision Digital Zoom: The camera has a Precision Digital Zoom of 4x. Combined with the 16x optical zoom, the maximum total zoom is 64x. The camera's Smart zoom technology intelligently uses the full image sensor to let you zoom into the portion of interest by cropping the image size, thus avoiding the image degradation found in most digital zooms. The maximum zoom scale depends upon the image size:

    Image Size Maximum Smart Zoom
    10M 20x
    5M 28x
    VGA 115x
    16:9 (2M) 38x

Note: Smart zoom is not compatible with 16M or 16:9 (12M)

Optical SteadyShot: With Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, the DSC-HX9V uses a built-in gyro sensor to compensate for shaky hands, minimize blur, brighten images, and allow flash-free shooting to preserve the mood.

Still Image Sizes: When recording digital still images, the DSC-HX9V allows you to choose from six image sizes:

Note: You can shoot continuously for approximately 29 minutes. Maximum MPEG-4 movie file size is approximately 2 GB.

Burst/Bracket Modes: The camera offers two multiple-image shooting modes:

    • Burst: The burst mode lets you shoot multiple images when you press and hold down the shutter release. Up to 10 images per second are recorded at the High setting, while up to 2 images per second can be shot at the Low setting. The number of photos and the interval are determined by the selected picture size. Focus, White Balance, and Exposure Value (EV) are set with the first image.
    • Bracket: The bracket mode lets you shoot a series of 3 images, each with a different exposure setting--one at normal exposure, one under exposed, and one over exposed. You can select three different step values: 0.3 EV, 0.7 EV, or 1.0 EV. You can also choose a bracket mode with the white balance at normal, shifted toward blue, and shifted toward red.

3D Photos: The DSC-HX9V is capable of recording the following 3D images:

    • 3D Still Image: shoots a 4608 x 3456 (16M) image that can be played back as 3D on a 3D-capable TV
    • 3D Sweep Panorama: shoots a panorama image that can be played back stereoscopically on a 3D TV
      • Image Sizes: 7152 x 1080 (245°), 4912 x 1080 (168°), 4912 x 1920 (180°), 3424 x 1920 (125°), or 1920 x 1080 (66°)
    • Sweep Multi-Angle: shoots a panorama image (1920 x 1080) that can be played back as a stereoscopic image by tilting the camera to the right or left, and a panorama image that can be played back stereoscopically on a 3D TV

Note: 3D images can only be viewed on a 3D-capable TV with the camera attached via an optional HDMI cable.

Global Positioning System (GPS): The camera has a built-in GPS receiver that provides positioning information for your images and movies. The information includes the coordinates (latitude/longitude), time and time zone, and shooting direction. This information is imbedded into the photos, and can be used to indicate the shooting location on a map when viewing on a computer.

Self-Timer: You can set the Self-Timer mode to a 10-second or 2-second delay so you can be in the picture. You can also select two Self-Portrait Timer modes which will capture the image 2 seconds after the face of one person or two people are detected.

Focus Modes: You can select from three auto focusing methods:

    • Multi AF: The camera focuses in nine areas around the center of the frame. This method is helpful when your subject is not centered in the frame.
    • Center AF: The camera focuses on a subject in the center of the frame. By pressing the shutter release halfway, you can lock the focus on your subject and recompose your shot with the subject off center.
    • Spot AF: The camera focuses on a very small area in the center of the frame.

AF Illuminator: The AF (auto focus) Illuminator briefly provides fill light to focus more easily on a subject in dark surroundings. You can set the AF Illuminator to Auto or Off.

Face Detection: Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and controls flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to deliver accurate, natural skin tones with reduced red-eye. It can also give priority to children or adults. You can also select and register an individual's face to be given priority.

Anti-Blink Function: The Anti-blink function works to help counter blinking and squinting. When the camera is set to Soft Skin or Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot so you can determine whether or not you need to take another shot.

Smile Shutter Mode: The Smile Shutter technology automatically detects and captures a smiling face. Simply activate by pressing the Smile Shutter button and the camera will capture a smile the moment it happens. You can select the degree of Smile Detection Sensitivity to Slight smile, Normal smile or Big Smile.

Scene Recognition: Scene Recognition mode automatically detects eight different types of scenes and selects the appropriate camera settings: Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Twilight using a Tripod, Backlight, Backlight Portrait, Landscape, Portrait, Infant, Spotlight, Low Light, and Macro. You can select from the following Scene Recognition modes:

    • iSCN: Camera detects conditions such as backlight or a night scene and takes the shot using the optimal settings.
    • iSCN+: Camera shoots one image without using the scene recognition functions and another image using the scene recognition function.

Shooting Modes: Using the top-mounted Mode Dial, you can select from the following shooting modes:

    • Intelligent Auto Mode (iAuto): Allows you to shoot still images with the settings adjusted automatically.
    • Program Auto: Allows you to shoot with the exposure adjusted automatically (both the shutter speed and aperture value). You can also select various settings using the menu.
    • Scene Selection Modes: You can choose from the following Scene Selection modes:
      • Soft Skin: Allows you to shoot faces with smooth-looking skin
      • Soft Snap: Allows you to shoot images with a softer atmosphere for portraits, flowers, etc.
      • Anti Motion Blur: For shooting indoor shots without using the flash to reduce subject blur.
      • Landscape: This mode is used for shooting landscapes at a distance.
      • Backlight Correction HDR: Shoots 3 images with different exposures to create a single image with greater range of gradation.
      • Twilight Portrait: This mode is used for shooting people in the foreground at night.
      • Twilight: This mode is used for shooting a distant subject at night.
      • Handheld Twilight: Allows you to shoot night scenes with less noise without using a tripod
      • High Sensitivity: The camera shoots without flash in low light, reducing blur. Any size image available. Sensitivity increased up to ISO 3200.
      • Gourmet: Shoots food arrangements in delicious color.
      • Pet: Allows you to shoot images of your pet with the best settings.
      • Beach: This mode is for shooting at seaside or the lakeside.
      • Snow: This mode shoots whitish scenes brightly.
      • Fireworks: This mode allows you to record fireworks in all their splendor.
      • Advanced Sports Shooting: Allows you to shoot fast movements such as in sports;
      • while the shutter button is pressed halfway, subject motion is predicted and focus is adjusted automatically.
    • Manual: You can set the exposure manually. The shutter speed can be set between 1/1600 and 30 seconds. The aperture (F value) can be set between F3.5 and F8 (Wide Angle) or between F5.9 and F14 (Telephoto).
    • Sweep Panorama Mode: Simply press the shutter button and sweep the camera in the desired direction (horizontal or vertical), and the camera continuously shoots at a high speed and then seamlessly stitches the images together with automatic position adjustment to create one stunning panoramic image in the span of a second. Available in wide and ultra-wide options, the camera can take panoramic shots of up to 224-degrees, which is wider than a fish-eye lens.
    • Movie Mode: Allows you to record AVCHD or MPEG-4 movies with stereo audio.

Exposure Compensation: Besides auto exposure, you can adjust the exposure from +2.0EV to -2.0EV in 1/3 stop increments.

Built-In Flash: The camera's built-in flash features a range of 9-7/8" to 18' 4-1/2" with the zoom set to wide and 3' 11-1/4" to 9' 10-1/8" with the zoom set to telephoto. The flash settings include:

    • Auto: the flash automatically strobes when the surroundings are dark
    • On: the flash strobes with every shot
    • Slow Synchro: the flash is used regardless of the amount of ambient light, but the shutter speed is slower under dark conditions, allowing you to clearly shoot a background that is out of the flash-lit area.
    • Off: the flash does not operate

Red-eye Reduction: The flash pre-strobes before shooting to reduce the red-eye phenomenon. You can set to Auto (when Face Detection is activated), On, or Off.

Metering Modes: You can select Spot, Center-weighted, or Multi-pattern Metering. Spot metering lets you adjust the exposure to the subject, even when the subject is a backlit or when there is strong contrast between the subject and the background. Center-weighted metering measures the center of the image and determines the exposure based on the brightness of the subject. When multi-pattern metering is used, the image is divided into multiple regions and metering is performed in each region. The camera judges the subject position and background brightness, and determines a well-balanced exposure.

White Balance: When the white balance is set to auto, the white balance is set automatically in response to the condition of the subject, and the overall color balance is adjusted. When shooting under special lighting conditions, you can select the settings manually. When using flash, you can select the flash white balance mode. The white balance can also be set to Incandescent, Fluorescent 1 (white fluorescent), Fluorescent 2 (natural white fluorescent), Fluorescent 3 (day white fluorescent), Daylight, Cloudy, One Push (adjust white balance depending on the light source) or One Push Set (memorizes the basic white color which will be used).

Grid Lines: The cameras on-screen grid lines make it easy to set a subject's horizontal and vertical position.

Histogram: A histogram is a graph showing the brightness of an image. The graph display indicates a bright image when skewed to the right side, and a dark image when skewed to the left side.

In-camera Function Guide: An on-screen function guide text/icon display makes it easy to learn the camera functions that give you greater creative freedom to adjust photo settings. The function guide can be turned on or off as desired.

Date and Time: Each time you take a picture, the camera records the date and time. The date and time are not superimposed on the picture, instead saved in a data file along with the image. Using the included PMB software, you can print or save images with the date.

    View, Edit, And Print Images

View Modes: The Sony DCR-HX9V's View Mode allows you to select your recorded images and movies by date, folder (stills), or folder (movies).

Auto Orientation: When the camera is rotate to shoot a portrait (vertical) image, the camera records it position change and displays the image in the portrait position.

Index View: In addition to viewing images one-by-one in full screen, you can view multiple images at once in the index view mode. The index feature lets you to display a total of 16 (4 x 4) or 25 (5 x 5) images.

Slide Show: The Slide Show function lets you play back images one after the other. You can select from the following slide show effects (Simple, Nostalgic, Stylish, or Active). Each effect has a preset music soundtrack, or you can choose from the 4 selections. The interval between the pictures can be adjusted, allowing you to choose 1, 3, 5, and 10 seconds or automatic to suit the selected effect. You can select Folder play (all images in the selected folder), All play (all images on the memory card), or This Date (all images from selected date). When repeat is selected, the images are replayed in a continuous loop.

Playback Zoom: You can enlarge a recorded still image up to 8x the size of the original image. Once the image is zoomed, you can pan left to right and up or down through the image.

Rotating Images: Recorded images can be rotated 360-degrees in 90-degree increments on the camera's LCD screen.

    Great Camera

This camera is compact but not short on features! A year ago, I bought the 10X version of this camera and was so impressed with the ease and quality, my wife wanted one to replace the older Sony Mavica. I bought her this model, then my youngest son, whe was drooling over my first purchase since I bought it, decided to order one too. It is simple to use, the panoramic feature is simple, I really like the "Movie" button, which all you do is press the button and you are instantly recording and has an image stabilizer for smoother recording. It takes fantastic videos even in low light! It is loaded with features but don't let that scare you away-they are so easy to use. Sony did a great job on this one!!!
    Pros:
High power zoom; ease of use even with all the features packed into this camera; Panaramic photography; Auto and Intelligent Settings; high quality video and so easy to use; and GREAT PICTURES that rival cameras costing five times as much.
    Cons:
If you get one, everybody in the house will want one!!!

From someone who is very particular and thorough about my purchases, I can say that after reading the many positive reviews from various review sites, I settled on the Sony dsc- hx9v. I could not be happier about my decision to buy this camera. If you're even considering this camera, really! Look no further - everything from crisp, vibrant images to impressive video capture. And, 5 stars to Crutchfield for their price and after- purchase service.

A very good camera. It allows you to adjust it to the type picture you are taking or, for people like me, you can set it on automatic.
    Pros:
Very good fidelity and sharpness on pictures, even when you zoom in long distance shots.
    Cons:
Some times the auto lens cover do not open or close properly. Also where the auto flash is located, it sometimes get blocked from popping up by your hand holding the camera.

    The one to get . . .

Written By sbjenni, Palo Alto, Ca on Saturday, January 14, 2012

After checking out other GPS-equipped cameras, including the Casio EX-H20GBK and the new Canon Powershot S100 (both of which I ended up returning) I bought a Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9V. After shooting hundreds of photos in a variety of settings and lighting conditions, I've concluded that this camera is superior in just about every way that matters:

+ Color accuracy and resolution are both excellent for a compact camera.

+ 16x Optical zoom (24 - 384mm equivalent) is integrated with an amazingly (!!!) capable image stabilization system to yield clear, crisp images, even at maximum zoom.

+ Works well in low-light, in spite of F3.8 exposure limit. (Doesn't default to ridiculously slow shutter speeds or excessively high ISO in auto modes.)

+ Auto-focus is accurate and very quick.

+ Short processing time in "Program" mode (which I use most of the time).

    + Shoots video at up to full 1,920 x 1,080 AVCHD @ 28mps

+ Shirt-pocketable and weighs only a little over 6 oz.

+ Mode selections are comprehensive and very user-friendly.

+ State-of-the-art panorama functions result in near-seamless wide images.

+ Backlight Correction HDR mode works very well.

    + Includes 10-shot burst and triple-shot auto-exposure-bracketing modes.

+ GPS tags photos and PMB software provides nice integration with Google Maps.

    + Nice, bright LCD screen.

+ Excellent battery life (far superior to the Canon S100).
    Pros:
+ Comparable to the Casio in price, but the Sony offers better all around image quality, and is far more feature-rich. + About half the price of the Canon S100, but with superior color capture and less softness in the corners of images.
    Cons:
    - Processing is a bit sluggish in some of the "feature" modes. - GPS is a little slow to sync up at times, especially under forest canopy, and does not generate down-loadable KML files (unlike the Casio). - Aperture is limited to f/3.3 and f/8 (however, the Sony compensates for this with electronics that effectively create shallow depth-of-field and low-light capability as needed). - No optical viewfinder (which neither the Casio EX-20HGBK nor the Canon S100 has either).

Wonderful camera with some real drawbacks

There were three flaws in the design of this camera that ruined it for me: 1) The flash pops up RIGHT where I've been holding cameras for 30 years! I might eventually get adjusted to it, but will the mechanism get damaged in the meantime? What about the times when I hand off the camera to someone else? 2) The panoramic mode is buggy. On standard setting, it's hard to capture a full image. In either WIDE or HD Panorama, it's NOT possible! As you begin to pan, the camera begins an internal countdown. There is no visible indicator of how much time you have left, so most of the time the camera only records a partial image. If you move the camera too fast, it will tell you that the movement was too fast, and it could not record. And if you move it too slowly, it will tell you that it was too slow and also could not record an image! 3) When you record HD videos, the files are named 00000.MTS, 00001.MTS, 00002.MTS,... etc., etc. When you remove the recorded videos (to your permanent media), the new recorded videos, will be named; 00000.MTS, 00001.MTS, 00002.MTS... I spoke with a Sony representative who offered me a solution. She recommended that I keep the last file from my recordings on the memory card. That way, the camera would know to start with the next number in the sequence. When I tried that, the camera gave me a message about an inconsistency with the indexing, and although I had left file 00016.MTS in the card, the next video was recorded as 00000.MTS.

Love this camera with some nuisances

Overall, I came from an Olympus camera which I liked for the unlimited burst. This camera is in a different league. The picture quality is so much better. Some reviews mention the menu is difficult to get around but I had no trouble. I'm sure I will be using this camera for years to come.
    Pros:
I bought this camera so I could take good video at a Keith Urban concert and it did not disappoint! Even with all the bright lights it performed brilliantly. I was also thrilled at how will I can zoom in when in video mode. a 4GB memory card was all I needed and I taped about 6 segments during the concert along with all the pictures I took in burst mode.
    Cons:
A few minor items which wee a little of a nuisance. THe auto-focus sometimes didn't work on full telephoto mode. I had to back off the telephoto and focus on something else before I returned to by subject again and zoomed in. This made me lose a shot or two that I wish I could have captured. Also, burst mode only captures 10 shots at a time. It would be nice if it wasn't limited.
