Shoot like a pro with this convenient all-in-one camera

Sony's high-performance "Cyber-shot R" cameras have made a splash in the digital imaging world, featuring large, SLR-class image sensors engineered into compact cameras with built-in lenses. With the DSC-RX10, Sony introduces a far-reaching 24-200mm Zeiss® zoom lens into the mix, along with a few other substantial feature upgrades. The end result? This camera can give larger SLR cameras a run for their money, delivering vivid, detailed photos in a wide range of lighting conditions, as well as pro-quality high-definition video.

Making the most of your available light

The RX10's built-in 24-200mm lens offers much more than just powerful zoom. This fast, bright lens features a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout its zoom range. There are two big advantages right there. First, that wide aperture gives you flexibility when you're composing shots: you can use fast shutter speeds to freeze motion, take crisply focused portraits of your subject against a softly blurred background, or capture flash-free images in dim settings. Second, when shooting in manual mode with this camera, you can dial in the exposure for a particular aperture, and you won't need to change all your settings when zooming in and out. This impressive lens also features a newly designed Direct Drive SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) for improved focusing speed and precision.

Intuitive autofocus

This camera's lock-on autofocus makes it a snap to track those subjects that just won't sit still — like kids or family pets at play. Just press the shutter button down halfway, and the camera recognizes your subject and helps you stay on target, even when that subject leaves the frame temporarily. This tracking feature helps optimize autofocus timing, so you'll snap more keepers and fewer throwaways. An innovative "Eye AF" mode detects and focuses on a subject's eye, even if he or she is slightly turned away from the camera. A blinking green frame keeps you informed about the point of focus for the upcoming shot.

Stunning HD video

Sony didn't forget about all the videographers out there, from practitioners of home videos to budding filmmakers. The RX10 records moving images internally in a range of formats, up to high-quality AVCHD video at 1080/60p. If you're looking to capture the best possible footage for your next documentary or art house film, you can send uncompressed video signals to an external third-party solid-state recorder via the camera's HDMI output. While you're shooting video, you'll have full use of the camera's optical zoom range, and you can engage optical image stabilization to reduce the jittery effects of camera shake during handheld shots.

Sony DSC-RX10 RX10 compact digital camera

The RX10 features a tilting LCD screen for improved shooting versatility from high or low angles.

Built-in Wi-Fi

With a camera this good, you're going to want to share lots of your photos. To make it easier, Sony added wireless photo-sharing capability to the RX10. With built-in Wi-Fi, it's easy to transfer photos from the camera wirelessly to your compatible smartphone using Sony's free PlayMemories app for Apple® and Android™ devices. The app also offers remote control of the camera's shutter, so you can snap a shot using your smartphone — great for shooting group shots using a tripod. If you have an NFC-compatible Android smartphone, simply touch it to the RX10 for instant pairing and transfer of photos.

Shoot from up high or down low

The tilting LCD screen allows you to shoot from the hip or above your head while viewing the high-resolution display. Want better audio quality from your home movies? Attach an optional microphone to the multi-interface shoe, which can also accommodate compatible viewfinders or flashes. There's also a multi-terminal for connecting a remote shutter release.

    Recording Features

Tiltable 3" LCD Screen: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 digital camera has a 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD screen with 1,228,800 dots. The LCD brightness control can be set to Auto, Manual (-2 to +2), or Sunny Weather (appropriate for shooting outdoors). You can tilt the LCD upward approximately 84° for shooting low angles, and downward approximately 43° for high angles.

Electronic Viewfinder (EVF): In addition to the LCD screen, the camera has a high-resolution OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder with 1,440,000 dots. A sensor next to the viewfinder automatically switches from the LCD to the viewfinder as you bring the camera to your eye. You can also independently set the viewfinder brightness automatically or manually (-2 to +2).

Recording Media: The camera is compatible with the following recording media: Memory Stick XC-HG Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo (for movie recording, use Mark2 PRO Duo cards), Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo, SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards (Class 4 or higher for movies).

Image Recording Formats: The camera records still images in JPEG (with Extra Fine, Fine and Standard compression), RAW (unprocessed), and JPEG+RAW formats (images from both formats created at the same time). Moving images can be recorded in AVCHD Ver. 2.0 format (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) with Dolby Digital 2ch audio or MPEG-4 with AAC stereo audio.

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a large 13.2 x 8.8mm (1") color Exmor R CMOS image sensor with approximately 20.9-million total pixels and 20.2-million effective pixels. The camera is also equipped with a new-generation BIONZ X image processing engine for maximum picture quality.

Lens: The camera is equipped with a bright Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* (T-star) 8.3x zoom lens. The lens has 14 elements in 11 groups, including 7 aspheric elements. It has a focal length of 24-200mm (35mm equivalent) for recording 3:2 still images, 26-212mm for recording 16:9 movies, and 31-259mm for 4:3 movies (when SteadyShot is set to Standard). The aperture range is F2.8 to F11.0 (W-T). A lens hood is included to block unwanted light from entering the lens.

Clear Image/Digital Zoom: In addition to the 8.3x optical zoom, you can reach higher zoom scales by engaging the Clear Image Zoom or the Digital Zoom, or both. The amount of zoom depends upon the image size as follows:

Image Size Optical Zoom Clear Image Zoom Maximum Zoom Scale
    L: 20M 8.3x 7.9x 66x
    M: 10M 8.3x 11.2x 93x
    S: 5M 8.3x 16x 133x

Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode: Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode can provide blur-free movies, even while walking. Camera-shake compensation using Optical SteadyShot/Active Mode has been improved with the addition of new electronic image stabilization. This makes it easier to obtain sharp movies, even when zooming in unsteady situations.

Still Image Sizes: When recording digital still images, the DSC-RX10 allows you to choose from multiple image sizes in four aspect ratios: 3:2 (best for printing), 16:9 (best for viewing on an HDTV), 4:3 (best for viewing on a computer), and 1:1 (best for shooting as a medium format camera). • Bracketing: You can shoot a series of photos, each with a different aspect of the exposure. You can select from Exposure Bracketing (3 or 5 images, 0.3/0.7/1.0/2.0/3.0 EV, Continuous or Single Bracket), White Balance (Lo/Hi), and D-Range Optimizer (Lo/Hi).

Auto Focus Areas: You can select from the following auto focusing areas: Multi-point AF (25 points), Center-weighted AF, Flexible Spot, Flexible Spot (Tracking Focus), and Flexible Spot (Face Tracking).

Face Detection: Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and controls flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to deliver accurate, natural skin tones with reduced red-eye. It can also give priority to children or adults. You can also select and register an individual's face to be given priority.

Built-In Flash: The camera's built-in flash features a range of 3.28' to 33.46'. The flash settings include:

    • Auto: the flash automatically strobes when the surroundings are dark or when there is backlight
    • Fill Flash: the flash strobes with every shot
    • Slow Sync: the flash is used regardless of the amount of ambient light, but the shutter speed is slower under dark conditions, allowing you to clearly shoot a background that is out of the flash-lit area
    • Rear Sync: the flash operates before exposure is completed every time your trigger the shutter
    • Off: the flash does not operate

Metering Modes: You can select Spot, Center-weighted, or Multi-pattern Metering. Spot metering lets you adjust the exposure to the subject, even when the subject is a backlit or when there is strong contrast between the subject and the background. Center-weighted metering measures the center of the image and determines the exposure based on the brightness of the subject. When multi-pattern metering is used, the image is divided into multiple regions and metering is performed in each region. The camera judges the subject position and background brightness, and determines a well-balanced exposure.

White Balance: When the white balance is set to auto, the white balance is set automatically in response to the condition of the subject, and the overall color balance is adjusted. When shooting under special lighting conditions, you can select the settings manually. When using flash, you can select the flash white balance mode. The white balance can also be set to Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Incandescent, Fluorescent (warm white), Fluorescent (cool white), Fluorescent (day white), Fluorescent (daylight), Color Temperature/Filter, Custom (adjust white balance depending on the light source) or Custom Set (memorizes the basic white color which will be used).

Multi Interface Shoe: The RX10 is equipped with a Multi Interface Shoe, a proprietary hot shoe for attaching specific accessories to the camera. The hot shoe is also compatible with some attachments designed for the Sony Accessory Shoe. Optional attachments include:

    Customer Q&A

    1 question already asked

    Q
HOW DO YOU CLOSE DOWN THE FLASH ????
    albert  Sep 07, 2014
    2 answers
    A
I use my left hand to hold the camera and my right hand to push it down. My thumb and my middle fingers will be on the left and the right of the flash respectively and I place my index finger on the top and push down gently, with my thumb and middle finger pulling back. The flash will start to rotate into position. When it is down about 45 degree, let go of the thumb and middle finger and just use the index finger to push down. The action should be smooth and and I do not need to force it. Hope this will help.

    A
You simply physically close the flash head. Then go to the function button and select flash off in the flash menu. To be honest the low light performance of this camera is so good that that I only used the flash once to make sure it was working.
