About the Sony Cyber-shot® DSC-TX1

Tara W.
Record vibrant, lifelike photographs with the ultra-slim DSC-TX1. Sony designed this camera's lens and 10.2-megapixel image sensor for especially good low-light performance, so you can take clear photos in darker settings without using a flash. The 4X optical zoom lens lets you get close to your subjects, and optical image stabilization keeps shots steady.

Face and smile detection for better portraits
The DSC-TX1 finds the faces in your frame and automatically adjusts its settings to give you crisp, attractive photos of friends and family. This camera can also help you capture a baby's fleeting smile — just touch the LCD to indicate your subject, and the camera automatically snaps a picture when it spots a grin. If your subject starts to squint as you take a photo, an anti-blink function snaps two quick shots, and then records only the one with your subject's eyes wide open.

Panoramic photos and HD movie mode
This camera boasts plenty of other cool features, too. You can create panoramic photos that reach beyond the scope of an ordinary wide-angle lens by sweeping the camera horizontally or vertically across your scene — the 'TX1 stitches several images together in-camera to form one seamless photo. And the DSC-TX1 offers an impressive HD movie mode, which lets you shoot high-definition footage that'll look great on your HDTV.

This camera's built-in memory holds approximately two photos at top resolution. Add a Memory Stick® Duo or Memory Stick PRO Duo™ for more photo and video storage.

Recording Features

Ultra-Slim Design: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX1 Digital Camera packs a lot of performance into an ultra-slim design. The DSC-TX1 is slim enough to slip into a pocket, so you can take it with you wherever you go. It is available in three fun colors: Silver, Blue, or Pink.

3.0" LCD Touchscreen: The DSC-TX1 has a 3.0", wide-screen, color LCD touch-screen with 230,400 pixels (960 x 240). The LCD touchscreen allows you to view an image before taking a picture, replay images that have been stored in memory, navigate menus, and specify focus points. For best viewing, you can adjust the brightness of the LCD monitor when using the camera outdoors.

Note: This camera is not equipped with a separate viewfinder.

10.2 Megapixel "Exmor R" CMOS Sensor: A powerful 10.2 megapixel 1/2.4-inch "Exmor R" CMOS sensor helps you capture detailed images with superb contrast and clarity down to the finest detail. For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 7.79mm (1/2.3" type), 10.2 Mega-Pixel (Effective) "Exmor R" CMOS sensor with approximately 10.6-million gross pixels and 10.2-million effective pixels. More megapixels give you more detail and definition when you make big prints or crop in tight on your subject.

BIONZ Image Processor: The BIONZ image processor delivers  high resolution and fast performance. Fast processing enables Sweep Panorama Mode to create the wide panoramic image in the camera in just seconds, clear images in low light settings, even without a flash, and can layer one image over another to create a photo that looks just like what you see with your eyes.

DRO Standard & Plus: Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO) Standard and Plus uses a sophisticated algorithm to determine the best exposure and contrast settings for almost any shooting environment. The result is more natural images with clearer details that more closely match what your naked eye sees. DRO is particularly effective when shooting backlit portraits or any scene with a dramatic contrast between background and foreground lighting. DRO Plus allows for even greater optimization by analyzing each region of an image and performing additional image processing.

Dual Media: This camera has 11MB of internal memory. Even when there is no Memory Stick inserted in the camera, you can record images using the internal memory (this memory is not removable). The camera is also compatible with the following recording media: Memory Stick Duo, MagicGate Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo and Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo (up to 16GB). All compatible of Memory Stick Duos can be used to record still pictures and moving images with audio. You can copy images from the camera's internal memory to an inserted Memory Stick Duo card.

Note: Although this unit is compatible with MagicGate Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick PRO Duo media, it cannot be used to record or play back music protected by copyright signals.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG format. Moving images with audio (monaural) are recorded in MPEG4.

Still Image Sizes: When recording digital still images, the DSC-TX1 allows you to choose from seven image sizes.

Image Size Aspect Ratio Internal Memory Memory Stick Duo Capacity
Approx. 11 MB 4 GB
10M: 3648 x 2736 4:3 2 812
5M: 2592 x 1944 3 1174
3M: 2048 x 1536 7 2472
VGA (0.3M): 640 x 480 70 23730
8M: 3648 x 2432 3:2 2 801
7M: 3648 x 2056 16:9 2 807
2M: 1920 x 1080 11 3955

Note: The 3:2 option records images in a horizontal to vertical proportion of 3:2 to match the size of the print paper used. The 16:9 option recorded images fills the entire screen. Both edges of the image may be cut off when printing

MPEG-4 Movies: Besides recording still images, you can also record moving images with sound. Moving images are recorded in MPEG4 format at approximately 30 frames per second. The following image sizes are available: 1280 x 720 (16:9-Fine), 1280 x 720 (16:9-Standard), and 640 x 480 (4:3-VGA). Movies with the size set to 1280 x 720 can only be recorded on Memory Stick Pro Duo media.

Image Size Aspect Ratio Internal Memory Memory Stick Duo Capacity (total)
Approx. 11 MB 4 GB
1280 x 720 (Fine) 16:9 *** 0:56:20
1280 x 720 (Standard) *** 1:22:10
640 x 480 (VGA) 4:3 0:00:10 2:44:30

Note: continuous movie recording time is approximately 29 minutes.

Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 4x Optical Zoom Lens: The Vario-Tessar lens is specially produced for very compact cameras. This specialized design allows quick auto-focus, appealing zoom range while still maintaining a compact design. The lens has a 4x optical zoom and a focal length of 6.18mm to 24.7mm, equivalent to 35mm to 140mm in 35mm photography. The high-performance Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 4x optical zoom lens brings distant subjects closer for video recording as well as for outdoor, sports, and travel photos; and Close Focus shoots close-ups, up to just under ½" from the subject.

Precision/Smart Digital Zoom: The camera has a Precision Digital Zoom of 2x. Combined with the 4x optical zoom, the maximum total zoom is 8x. The Smart Zoom intelligently uses the full CCD to let you zoom into the portion of interest by cropping the image size, thus avoiding the image degradation found in most digital zooms. The maximum zoom scale depends upon the image size:

Image Size Maximum Smart Zoom
5M 5.6x
3M 7.1x
VGA 22x
16:9 (2M) 7.6x

Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization: Optical SteadyShot image stabilization reduces blur caused by camera shake resulting in crisper clearer images. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization uses a built-in gyro sensor to detect camera shake and automatically shifts the lens to help prevent blur without sacrificing image quality.

Shooting Modes: You can select whether the camera captures one image or multiple images at a time. The Shooting Modes include:

  • Normal: Shoots only one frame when the shutter button is pressed.
  • Burst: The DSC-TX1 can capture full 10.2 megapixel resolution images at up to 10 fps, helping to ensure that you capture your subject's decisive moment. In addition, the DSC-TX1 employs a mechanical shutter that helps reduce distortion when continuously shooting moving subjects. You can set the camera to record 2, 5, or 10 images per second in succession.
  • Self-Timer: You can set the Self-Timer mode to a 10-second or 2-second delay so you can be in the picture.

Intelligent Auto Focus: Thanks to Intelligent AF technology, capture fleeting moments like a child's adorable expression with the ultra-quick AF which locks focus in as little as 0.3-sec. The camera utilizes three auto focus modes. You can choose from the following: Multi AF (focuses on a subject in all ranges of the finder frame automatically), Center AF (focuses on a subject in the center of the finder frame automatically), or Spot AF (focuses on an extremely small subject or a narrow area automatically.

Focus Priority: You can tap the camera's LCD screen to select a particular subject for the camera to focus on.

AF Illuminator: The AF (auto focus) Illuminator briefly provides fill light to focus more easily on a subject in dark surroundings. The AF Illuminator is most useful within approximately 8' of the subject.

Macro/Close Focus: For close-ups of small objects such as flowers and insects, this camera has macro focus capability and a close focus function. With the zoom set all the way to wide, the camera can focus on objects as close as 3-1/4" from the lens in Macro mode and as close as 13/32" to 7-7/8" in the Close Focus mode.

Face Detection: Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and controls flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to deliver accurate, natural skin tones with reduced red-eye. The camera can automatically detect the faces, or you can manually select which faces to detect and register. It can also give priority to children or adults. The camera's Face Motion Detection adjusts ISO sensitivity and accelerates the shutter speed when facial movement is detected, reducing blur in the subjects face.

Anti-Blink Function: The Anti-blink function works to help counter blinking and squinting. When the camera is set to Portrait, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot so you can determine whether or not you need to take another shot.

Smile Shutter Mode: Smile Shutter technology captures a smile the moment it happens. Simply press the Smile Shutter button and the camera does the rest. You can also select adult and child priority and indicate the degree of Smile Detection Sensitivity. Intelligent Scene Recognition can now be used together with Smile Shutter when the Intelligent Auto mode is set to on. This means that beautiful smiles can be captured with settings optimized for the particular scene, even in difficult conditions such as twilight and backlighting.

Motion Detection: Motion Detection, along with Face Motion Detection, adjusts ISO sensitivity and increases the shutter speed when movement is detected, reducing blur in moving subjects and faces.

Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN): Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode automatically detects nine different types of scenes and, within just 1/30th of a second, selects the appropriate camera settings: Backlight, Backlight Portrait, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Twilight using a tripod, Portrait, Landscape, Macro, and Close Focus. iSCN has two modes:

  • Auto: In Auto Mode, the camera takes a single shot using the optimal settings.
  • Advanced: In Advanced Mode, the camera takes a photo with the optimal settings and, if in difficult lighting (low light or back light) immediately takes a second photo with another optimized setting so you can choose which to keep.

Exposure Modes: The camera features the following exposure modes:

  • Easy Shooting Mode: With Easy Shooting Mode, even beginners can take great photos. In Easy Shooting Mode, easy-to-understand basic instructions are displayed on the LCD screen and the camera switches to all automatic settings, removing several function choices and allowing you to focus on just your subject. Since this mode works together with Intelligent Scene Recognition, the camera selects the optimum setting for each scene. In addition the easy mode simplifies preview mode.
  • iAuto Mode: Unlike traditional auto mode, Intelligent Auto (iAuto) mode thinks for you, recognizing scenes, lighting conditions, and faces, and adjusts settings resulting in clearer images, faces with more natural skin tone, and less blur. By incorporating advanced features such as Intelligent Scene Recognition, Face Detection technology, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, iAuto mode lets you take advantage of the latest Sony Cyber-shot technology without leaving auto mode. Whether you are shooting expansive landscapes, capturing playground action, or taking pictures at a birthday party or wedding shower, iAuto mode will optimize your camera's settings to help ensure you come away with a great shot.
  • Program Auto: This mode allows you to shoot with the exposure (both the shutter speed and aperture value) adjusted automatically while you manually operate other camera settings such as Focus, Metering Mode, ISO and EV.
  • Anti-Motion Blur: Capture cleaner and sharper images, even when your subject is moving. When set in Anti Motion Blur Mode, the DSC-TX1 captures six images in a fraction of a second with higher shutter speed and combines the data from all six to create a single image of extraordinary detail and eliminate subject blur, beyond the capability of traditional cameras.
  • Handheld Twilight: Capture cleaner and sharper night shots without using a tripod. When set to Handheld Twilight Mode, the DSC-TX1 captures six images in a fraction of a second with one press of the shutter, and combines the data from all six to create a single image of extraordinary detail and low noise. With this mode, you can capture images in low light, without flash, beyond the capability of traditional cameras.
  • Scene Selection Modes: You can choose from the following Scene Selection modes:
    • Hi-Speed Shutter: Allows you to capture fast moving subjects outdoors or in other bright places.
    • High Sensitivity: The camera shoots without flash in low light, reducing blur. Any size image available. Sensitivity increased up to ISO 3200.
    • Soft Snap: This mode lets you shoot the color of a person's skin with a bright, warm color tone.
    • Twilight Portrait: This mode is used for shooting people in the foreground at night.
    • Twilight: This mode is used for shooting a distant subject at night.
    • Landscape: This mode is used for shooting landscapes at a distance.
    • Beach: This mode is for shooting at seaside or the lakeside.
    • Snow: This mode shoots whitish scenes brightly.
    • Fireworks: This mode allows you to record fireworks in all their splendor.
    • Pet Mode: Pet-mode minimizes blur when shooting moving pets utilizing Motion Detection technology and automatically turns off the flash to reduce glowing pet eyes. AF illumination is also disabled so you can take more natural expressions avoiding startling your pets.
    • Gourmet: Shoots food arrangements in delicious color.
    • Underwater: Allows you to shoot underwater in natural colors when using an optional waterproof housing (sold separately).
  • Sweep Panorama: Reach beyond the traditional wide angle lens, and capture more breathtaking shots with Sweep Panorama Mode. Simply press the shutter button and sweep the camera in the desired direction and the camera continuously shoots at a high speed, then seamlessly stitches the images together with automatic position adjustment to create one stunning panoramic image. Available in wide and ultra-wide options, the camera can take panoramic shots of up to 185 degrees.
  • Movie Mode: Allows you to record MPEG4 movies with monaural audio for up to 29 minutes (or 2GB).
    • Auto: Adjusts the movie settings automatically.
    • Underwater: Shoot underwater in natural color when using a water proof housing (sold separately).

Exposure Compensation: Besides auto exposure, you can adjust the exposure from +2.0EV to -2.0EV in 1/3 stop increments.

Metering Modes: You can select Spot, Center-weighted, or Multi-pattern Metering. Spot metering lets you adjust the exposure to the subject, even when the subject is a backlit or when there is strong contrast between the subject and the background. Center-weighted metering measures the center of the image and determines the exposure based on the brightness of the subject. When multi-pattern metering is used, the image is divided into multiple regions and metering is performed in each region. The camera judges the subject position and background brightness, and determines a well-balanced exposure.

High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 3200): High ISO allows for faster shutter speed, so you can take photos indoors or in low light without the need for a flash. In addition to High Sensitivity Mode (ISO), you can select up to seven ISO settings (Auto, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200) when shooting in Program Auto Mode to adjust sensitivity to your shooting conditions.

Built-in Flash: The built-in flash has a range of 3.25" to 9.845' with the zoom set to wide and 1.645' to 10.5' with the zoom set to telephoto. The flash can be set to the following modes: Auto, Forced Flash, Slow Synchro, or No Flash. In Auto mode, the flash automatically strobes when the surroundings are dark. When the flash is set to Forced Flash, it strobes with every shot. In Slow Synchro, the flash is used regardless of the amount of ambient light, but the shutter speed is slower under dark conditions, allowing you to clearly shoot a background that is out of the flash-lit area. In addition, this camera has a "red-eye reduction" setting, which causes the flash to pre-strobe before shooting to reduce the red-eye phenomenon.

White Balance: When the white balance is set to auto, the white balance is set automatically in response to the condition of the subject, and the overall color balance is adjusted. When shooting under special lighting conditions, you can select the settings manually. When using flash, you can select the flash white balance mode. In addition to Auto and Flash, the white balance can be set to Incandescent, Fluorescent 1 (white fluorescent), Fluorescent 2 (natural white fluorescent), Fluorescent 3 (day white fluorescent), Daylight, Cloudy, One Push (adjust white balance depending on the light source) or One Push Set ( memorizes the basic white color which will be used). The unit also feature Underwater White Balance when using the camera with an optional underwater housing (sold separately). You can choose from Underwater Auto, Underwater 1 (Blue), Under Water 2 (Green) or Underwater Flash.

Grid Lines: The cameras on-screen grid lines make it easy to set a subjects horizontal and vertical position.

Function Guide: An on-screen function guide text/icon display makes it easy to learn the camera functions that give you greater creative freedom to adjust photo settings.

Date and Time: Each time you take a picture, the camera records the date and time. The date and time are not superimposed on the picture, instead saved in a data file along with the image.
