About the Sony Cyber-shot® DSC-WX80

David Brown

An ultra-compact jack-of-all-trades

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX80 does a little of everything and is still small enough to keep in your pocket. At it's heart is a backlit Exmor® R CMOS sensor, which delivers sharp photos in almost any lighting. And with an impressive 16.2 megapixels of resolution, image details will sparkle — both on screen and on prints. Plus Sony's Superior Auto mode can recognize poor light, fast action, and other shooting conditions to optimize the 'WX80's settings for the right exposure.

What else can you do with this ultra-slim point-and shoot besides take clear, colorful stills? Record HD video, retouch portraits, apply unique filter effects, take sweeping panoramas, and shoot in burst mode for blazing-fast action sequences. Not bad for a camera less than an inch thick. Oh, and also...

Wireless sharing with built-in Wi-Fi

Photos are more fun when you share them. And the 'WX80 makes sharing easy with built-in Wi-Fi. Just download Sony's PlayMemories app for your iPhone, iPad, or Android device, and you can wirelessly transfer images and video to your smartphone or tablet. That makes it easy to email them to family and friends or post them to social networking sites like Facebook. You can also send them wirelessly to a networked PC to back them up.

2.7" LCD Screen: The Sony DSC-WX80 digital camera has a 2.7" ClearPhoto LCD screen. The LCD has 230,000 pixels with a 5-step brightness control. The LCD screen allows you to view an image before taking a picture and replay images that have been stored in memory.

Built-in Wi-Fi: Using the downloadable PlayMemories app, available for iOS and Android, you can instantly share your photos with your friends. You can upload pictures and videos shot on the camera to social media sites via your Wi-Fi-enabled smartphone or tablet. In addition, you can back up images to a network-connected PC, control the camera with your smartphone, and view your photos and videos on a compatible TV.

Recording Media: The DSC-WX80 has approximately 48 MB of internal flash memory for recording up to 8 full resolution images when no memory card is inserted. The camera is also compatible with the following recording media:

    • Memory Stick: Memory Stick PRO Duo (for movies, Mark 2 media), Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo
    • SD Card: SD cards, SDHC cards, SDXC cards (For movies, Class 4 or faster)

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 1/2.3" Exmor R CMOS imaging device with approximately 16.8-million gross pixels and 16.2-million effective pixels. The advanced Exmor R CMOS image sensor delivers extremely fast speed, high resolution, and excellent low-light sensitivity with improved image clarity and reduced grain.

BIONZ Image Processor: The digital camera's BIONZ image processor delivers high resolution photos and fast still photography performance. The fast processing enables the camera to combine multiple images in less than a second to create wide panoramic images when using the Intelligent 3D Sweep Panorama feature. It also delivers high speed photo bursts, as well as Anti-Motion Blur and Handheld Twilight modes.

Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar Lens: The Vario-Tessar lens is specially produced for very compact cameras. This specialized design allows quick auto-focus, appealing zoom range while still maintaining a compact design. The lens has a 8x optical zoom and a focal length of 4.5mm to 36mm. The 35mm equivalent is 25mm to 200mm for stills, 28mm to 224mm for 16:9 movies, and 34mm-272mm for 4:3 movies. The lens has an aperture range of F2.6 (W) to F6.3 (T). The camera has a Digital Zoom of 4x. Combined with the 8x optical zoom, the maximum total zoom is 32x.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG format. Moving images with stereo audio can be recorded in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 with 2 channel Dolby Digital audio or MP4 format with AAC audio.

Still Image Sizes: When recording digital still images, the DSC-WX80 allows you to choose from six image sizes:

    • 4:3 - 16M (4608 x 3456)
    • 4:3 - 10M (3648 x 2736)
    • 4:3 - 5M (2592 x 1944)
    • 4:3 - VGA (640 x 480)
    • 16:9 - 12M (4608 x 2592)
    • 16:9 - 2M (1920 x 1080)

Movies: Besides recording still images, you can also record moving images with sound in AVCHD Ver2.0 or MPEG4 format. The following image sizes are available:

    • AVCHD 60i: 24M (FX) 1920 x 1080
    • AVCHD 60i: 17M (FH) 1920 x 1080
    • AVCHD 60i: 9M (HQ) 1440 x 1080
    • MP4 30fps: 12M: 1440 x 1080
    • MP4 30fps: 6M: 1280 x 720
    • MP4 30fps: 3M: 640 x 480
Note: The maximum length of time you can shoot continuously is approximately 29 minutes. The maximum size of an MP4 format movie file is approximately 2 GB.

Dual Recording: You can shoot still images while recording a movie. The camera keeps recording the movie while the still images are being taken. Up to 10 still images can be shot during one movie recording.

Movie SteadyShot: You can reduce the effects of camera shake when shooting movies by turning on Movie SteadyShot. Under normal shooting conditions, the Standard setting will reduce camera shake caused by slight movements of the hand. In extreme conditions, the Active SteadyShot setting will reduce camera shake while you're walking or while zooming.

3D Shooting: The DSC-WX80 allows you to shoot 3D images that can be played back on a 3D TV. Available in image sizes 16M or 16:9 (12M). 3D images are stored in MPO format.

Intelligent Sweep Panorama: The camera has a panorama shooting function, capable of shooting an near-full 360 degree panoramic image. You can also choose standard, wide, and high resolution panoramic images. Image sizes include:

    • Standard:
      • Horizontal: 4912 x 1080 (153°)
      • Vertical: 3424 x 1920 (114°)
    • Wide:
      • Horizontal: 7152 x 1080 (222°)
      • Vertical: 4912 x 1920 (164°)
    • 360°: 11520 x 1080 (Horizontal only)
    • High Resolution: 10480 x 4096 (Horizontal only)

Burst Mode: You can shoot up to 10 images in succession when you press and hold down the shutter button. There are 2 speeds to choose from: High (10 frames per second) and Low (2 fps). When using the self-timer, a series of a maximum of ten images is recorded.

Exposure Adjustment: You can adjust the exposure manually in 1/3 EV steps in a range of -2.0 EV to +2.0 EV to correct problems of over- or under-exposure.

Self-Timer: You can set the Self-Timer mode to a 10-second or 2-second delay so you can be in the picture or to help prevent blur. In addition, the self-timer can be used in conjunction with the face detection feature, allowing you to take a self-portrait by yourself or with one other person. When set to Self-portrait, the camera beeps when it detects the specified number of faces, and the shutter operates 2 seconds later.

Auto Focus: The camera has a Multi-point Auto Focus. This method is helpful when your subject is not centered in the frame. You can also choose Center-weighted AF, which focuses only on the subject framed in the AF range finder in the center of the image, or Spot AF, which focuses on an extremely small subject or a narrow area. You can also select Tracking Focus and Face Tracking Focus.

AF Illuminator: The AF (auto focus) Illuminator briefly provides fill light to focus more easily on a subject in dark surroundings. The camera emits red light to allow it to focus easily when the shutter button is presses halfway, until the focus is locked.

Face Detection: Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and controls flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to deliver accurate, natural skin tones with reduced red-eye. The camera can automatically select the faces to focus on, or you can select the face in a particular area of the frame by touching the screen. It can also give priority to children or adults. The camera's Face Motion Detection adjusts ISO sensitivity and accelerates the shutter speed when facial movement is detected, reducing blur in the subjects face.

Anti-Blink Function: The Anti-blink function works to help counter blinking and squinting. When the camera is set to Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot so you can determine whether or not you need to take another shot.

Smile Shutter Mode: The Smile Shutter technology automatically detects and captures a smiling face. Simply activate by pressing the Smile Shutter button and the camera will capture a smile the moment it happens. You can also set the degree of Smile Detection Sensitivity to Slight Smile, Normal Smile or Slight Smile.

Shooting Modes: The DSC-WX80 offers several shooting modes, selectable with the rear-mounted Control Wheel. You can select from the following:

    • Intelligent Auto: camera detects conditions such as backlight or a night scene and takes the shot using the optimal settings.
    • Superior Auto: camera shoots one image without using the scene recognition functions and another image using the scene recognition function.
    • Program Auto: allows you to shoot with the exposure (both the shutter speed and aperture value) adjusted automatically while you manually operate other camera settings.
    • 3D: allows you to shoot images that can be viewed in 3D on a 3D-capable TV.
    • Scene: multiple settings for specific scenes and shooting situations. Choices include: Soft Skin, Soft Snap, Anti-motion Blur, Landscape, Backlight Correction HDR, Night Portrait, Night Scene, Hand-held Twilight, High Sensitivity, Gourmet, Pet, Beach, Snow, and Fireworks.
    • Picture Effect: applies special effects to the images. Choices include: HDR Painting, Richtone, Monochrome, Miniature, Toy Camera, Pop Color, Partial Color, Soft High-key, Watercolor, and Illustration.
    • Background Defocus: This mode allows you to shoot an image with image processing so that the background and the subject stands out.

Mode Switch: The camera has a 3-way slide switch on the back for switching from Still Image Mode to Movie Mode to Sweep Panorama mode.

Metering Modes: You can select Spot, Center-weighted, or Multi-pattern Metering. Spot metering lets you adjust the exposure to the subject, even when the subject is a backlit or when there is strong contrast between the subject and the background. Center-weighted metering measures the center of the image and determines the exposure based on the brightness of the subject. When multi-pattern metering is used, the image is divided into multiple regions and metering is performed in each region. The camera judges the subject position and background brightness, and determines a well-balanced exposure.

Sensitivity: You can select up to nine ISO settings (Auto, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400, and 12800) when shooting in Program Auto Mode to adjust sensitivity to your shooting conditions.

Built-in Flash: The built-in flash has a range of 7-7/8" to 13 feet 9-3/8" with the zoom set to wide and 4' 11-1/8" to 7 feet 2-5/8 inches with the zoom set to telephoto. The flash can be set to the following modes: Off, Auto, On, Slow Synchro, and Advanced. In addition, this camera has a "red-eye reduction" setting, which causes the flash to pre-strobe before shooting to reduce the red-eye phenomenon.

White Balance: When the white balance is set to auto, the white balance is set automatically in response to the condition of the subject, and the overall color balance is adjusted. When using flash, you can select the Flash White Balance mode. In addition to Auto and Flash, the white balance can be set to Incandescent, Fluorescent 1 (white fluorescent), Fluorescent 2 (natural white fluorescent), Fluorescent 3 (day white fluorescent), Daylight, Cloudy, One Push (adjust white balance depending on the light source) or One Push Set (memorizes the basic white color which will be used).

Grid Lines: The cameras on-screen grid lines make it easy to set a subject's horizontal and vertical position.

Function Guide: An on-screen function guide text/icon display makes it easy to learn the camera functions that give you greater creative freedom to adjust photo settings.

    Play, Edit, and Print Functions
