Our take on the Sony DSX-S300BTX

by Ken Nail
Sony

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Sony comes up with a new way to use your iPod® in the car. Their DSX-S300BTX digital media receiver features a unique Tune Tray compartment that holds your iPod, Sony Walkman MP3 player, or USB drive inside the receiver, safe from bumps, knocks, and prying eyes. Just fold down the receiver's face, plug your player into the USB connection, and then close it up inside the receiver — you'll take charge of your player using the receiver's controls

Slick iPod controls
The DSX-S300BTX includes a set of powerful search controls for your iPod, so finding your favorite music files is a snap. You can browse through the usual menus of genre, artist, album, and so on, but you can also slam through hundreds of tracks quickly and easily with Quick-BrowZer™, Or use Zappin™ to listen to short clips from your music while searching. Sony includes SensMe™ software that organizes your music according to mood and tempo, so you can quickly find the music that you'd like to hear.

Bluetooth® built in
You'll appreciate the DSX-300BTX's built-in Bluetooth functionality if you make a lot of phone calls from your car. You can take and make calls hands-free, without having to divert your attention from the road. You can also stream music wirelessly from phones or audio devices with Bluetooth.

Stellar sound
The DSX-S300BTX offers the sonic tools you need to get great sound in your car. EQ7 boasts seven preset tone curves and a 7-band parametric equalizer, while digital time alignment controls create the perfect stereo sweet spot right in front of you. DM+ Advanced (Digital Music Plus Advanced) improves detail and high-frequency sound from compressed audio, so your iPod and music files sound fresh and lively.

Add on and enjoy
For more musical choices, you can add an optional HD Radio™ or satellite radio tuner to the DSX-S300BTX. Ramp up the sound by connecting external amps to the three pairs of high-voltage preamp outputs. Built-in high- and low-pass filters simplify amp setup and control.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Sony, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: Sony recommends that you remove your iPod from the dock when you leave your vehicle. If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Display Features

Detachable Fold-Down Face: The Sony DSX-S300BTX digital media receiver features a detachable fold-down face for theft prevention. Two face-fixing screws are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. The digital media receiver's fold-down face folds-down to access the unit's USB port.

Caution Alarm: If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the built-in amplifier is used.

OEL Display: The 4-line OEL (Organic Electroluminescent Light) display makes it easy to read station and song information.

Image Display: The Sony DSX-S300BTX offers various display images to choose from. You can select between Movie, Spectrum Analyzer (1-3), Wall Paper (1-4), All (displays rotation of all images), or Off.

Auto Scroll: This feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Dimmer: You can manually dim the display at night, if desired. You can operate the display dimmer automatically, when the vehicle's lights are turned on, or manually. If the dimmer is set to automatic, the orange/white wire in the power harness must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order to properly work.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button for 1 second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Selectable Button Illumination: The Sony DSX-S300BTX offers selectable blue or red key illumination to compliment your vehicle's interior lighting.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

    Audio Section

True Fidelity Sound Construction: The Sony DSX-S300BTX FM/AM compact disc player features a newly developed sound processor for less distortion, an S-MOSFET IC for smooth signal transmission, and a large-sized capacitor for deep bass sound.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Sony DSX-S300BTX utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

CEA2006 Compliant Amplifier: The power specifications for the Sony DSX-S300BTX are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DSX-S300BTX are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

Three 4-Volt Preamp Outputs with Adjustable Crossovers: The Sony DSX-S300BTX is equipped with 4-volt Front, Rear, and Sub pre-amp outputs with selectable LPF/HPF (Low Pass Filter/High Pass Filter) functionality, giving you the ability to customize the sound output to your external amplifiers.

    • High-Pass Filter: The front and rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off.
    • Low Pass Filter: The subwoofer output is non-fading with a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the subwoofer preamp output's Phase (Normal/Reverse).

Sound Balance/Fader: The sound balance between the left and right speakers (Balance) and front and rear speakers (Fader) can be adjusted to your preference. You can also adjust the volume level (+/-10dB) of the subwoofer preamp output.

Advanced Sound Engine: Sony's Advanced Sound Engine creates an ideal in-car sound field with digital signal processing. Advanced Sound Engine contains the following features: EQ7, Listening Position, DM+ Advanced, Rear Bass Enhancer, and Dynamic Loudness.

    • EQ7: You can select an equalizer curve from eight music types - Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom EQ7 mode allows  you to make  your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of seven different frequency bands - Band1 (40Hz or 63Hz), Band2 (100Hz or 160Hz), Band3 (250Hz or 400Hz), Band4 (630Hz or 1kHz), Band5 (1.6kHz or 2.5khz), Band6 (4.0kHz or 6.3khz), and Band7 (10.0kHz or 16.0kHz).
    • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, Custom or Off. The Custom Mode lets you precisely calibrate your listening position from each speaker so that the sound delay reach the listener more correctly. The distance is adjustable between 0.99-9.9'. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far
    • RBE (Rear Bass Enhancer): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
    • Dynamic Loudness: Dynamic Loudness refers to compensating for volume level and signal gain.
    • DM+ Advanced: DM+ Advanced improves digitally compressed sound by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process (works only for USB).

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

You can select and play a channel that fits your mood from the following categories.

    • Driving Type: Plays track that are suitable for type of driving. Choose from Freeway, Chillout Drive, Weekend Trip, Midnight Cruise, Party Ride, Morning Commute, and Going Home.

Note: Use of the supplied software (Content Transfer/SensMe Setup) is required to enable the SensMe function on this head unit. Great radio. I love the internal tray and the extra USB port on the front. The Bluetooth is great but about once a week I have to turn it off and back on when it doesn't recognize my phone (Samsung). Not sure if it is the phone or the head unit. It's not a deal breaker. Pandora streams fine. The BT phone works fine and no one has complained about the call quality. I do not have the external mic. Not sure why they discontinued this phone I love it and was going to buy a second.

Very pleased overall (I've had it for a couple of weeks now). Only slight negative is the garbling of the address book which it had transferred from my LG Octane phone over bluetooth. But it may well be the LG at fault. The buttons are tiny, but easy to use once you get the general idea. The 2DIN adapter Crutchfield sent looks ok, but it doesn't fit perfectly. I should try to get the radio about 1/8" (4mm) further out, so the faceplate doesn't catch the adapter at the bottom.
    Cons:
    Tiny buttons

Installed in my son's 2006 Ford Ranger. Taking out the factory radio was fairly easy, once I figured out which way to pull the levers. Then it truly became the drill of matching wires and finishing. Overall installation was easy. Sounds great and even the technically challenged can get this installed easily. Sound is great and really enjoy the hands free capability for phone calls. One less thing to worry about with a teen on the road.
    Pros:
    Hands free phone feature
    Cons:
Having to connect a lot of wires

Installed in a 2000 Forester SF. Install went as advertised . Very simple' to disassemble interior of Forester without breaking tabs etc like on my GMC. AM reception has improved tremendously. If you have the interior left rear window antenna, make sure to hook up the blue power antenna wire, otherwise you won't get decent reception.
    Pros:
Works really well with droid phones in bluetooth mode. I pod works seemlessly.
    Cons:
Difficult to learn how to navigate. Counter intuitive. Poorly written manuals. This is very common with overseas outsourcing.

    Wonderful Stereo

Written By aevans, Oklahoma City, OK on Friday, February 03, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I absolutely love this stereo. I have used the cassette tape ipod adapter and several of the fm transitter ipod adapters not wanting to spend too much for ipod hookups in my car. I finally bit the bullet and sprung for this unit, and I wish I had in the beginning. It is well worth it! I bought this stereo on a clearance sale so it was a superb value for the price. I recommended to my friend after I installed it, and he can't find a model with all the options for less then $280. I still recommend you buy this stereo at that price over ipod fm adapters. Sony makes great products for ipods. I already owned a Sony home stereo and clock radio that work seamlessly with my ipod and iphones (currently have iphone4). This stereo is no different. I was worried bluetooth would not be seamless since I have heard from several people the iphone bluetooth is finicky. I had absolutely zero problem with it. It connected quickly, and now connects automatically every time I get in the car. You can access all your classic ipod interface controls through the head unit, as well as you contacts from your phone. The one only downside to the head unit ipod controls is they limited to the classic ipod controls. It does not allow for any new features I have on my iphone (ipod touch) such as genius. That is possibly corrected on the new models, but I am okay with it because I keep a ipod classic inside the unit. If I listen to my iphone it is easily accessible to control thanks to bluetooth.
    Pros:
Built in bluetooth Hands free calling Works with Pandora from my iPhone4. Charges iPod/iPhone, can do multiple with inside and outside USB connections. No Static like FM transmitter. USB and Bluetooth connections sound better than analog plug many stereos offer.
    Cons:
iPod controls through head unit push button are hard to work in a car. I often select wrong things do to bumps, or just because of the sensitivity. Using the remote gets around this so it is not that big of a deal.

This is my first deck purchase and it's amazing. I never listen to my radio anymore. Cuz the radio sucks nowadays. Same songs over and over. But thanks to the tune tray all I listen to is my iPod. The sound quality is amazing. Being able to customize your own sound system is so convenient. The color schemes are pretty legit. Id recommend it to those who love listening to their iPods or any other external or internal outputs. Really worth every single penny.
    Pros:
Tune tray. Auto dimmer. Sound adjustment. Subwoofer levels. Different presets for the type of music you'd like to listen to. Remote control. Bluetooth.
    Cons:
No cd player. The volume knob goes in 4 directions. Up down left right and sometimes it's hard to get the right direction. But the remote control makes up for it

The multi control knob is not very easy to use. I find it a little confusing to operate, but I am getting better at it. The Bluetooth Phone function works great, and people tell me they can hear me loud and clear. The bluetooth audio works great too, I can hear pandora and other internet channels, as well has the music on my iPhone.
    Pros:
Bluetooth functions are amazing. Sound is great. Internal and external USB connections.
    Cons:
It takes some time to learn how to use the multi function control knob. The browser is a little confusing.

I wanted this to have a way to stow my iPod without a bunch of wires tangling up. It does a great job of that and sounds good doing it and charges that iPod too. Haven't used the bluetooth yet but USB drives work well. Great unit at a great price. ($100 off sale)
    Cons:
The only con I have is that it is incompatible with my early model iPod. (works great with my gen 4). I might not have bought it if I had known about it before. I looked back at the info but couldn't find any info stating which generations would work.

    Sony Cust Service Sub Par

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this myself and everything worked except the remote control. After contacting Sony Tech support they sent a new remote. Exact same problem with new remote. Sony was clueless and wanted me to remove entire unit and ship back to them. I called Crutchfield instead of Sony, thinking of returning unit for diff brand. Crutchfield rep asked if I installed optional bluetooth microphone in black jack marked "microphone", different from 1/8" jack on back of unit. He said this was common issue and symptom. So, I checked, moved mic to cord marked mic, and remote started working. 5 stars for Crutchfield, 0 for Sony.
    Pros:
all digital media, no more cd player, great external bluetooth mic installed new 32G USB stick, 1/2 my collection fits on one stick.
    Cons:
Only supports wav and mp3, no flac or ogg theora. No cd player, can't take advantage of free books on cd (cracker barrel) while traveling but, since I carry laptop everywhere I go, just need to rip it first.

    Great sound, minor flaws

Written By EDD, Milwaukee, WI on Thursday, January 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo was purchased as a replacement for an older Alpine unit. I have to say, my car now sounds like it has a sub woofer in the trunk. I can't believe the sound quality. Puts the Alpine to shame. I mentioned minor flaws, which are just that minor. They have to do with the iPod navigation. It is difficult to push the knob in straight while driving, but you can get use to it. There were other annoyances that have come up like when I turn on the playlist repeat, it does not stay on after turning the stereo off then on. I mention it because all of my music on my iPod is not age appropriate, so when my daughters playlist is finished I have to be quick in volume control or changing it. Otherwise it is a great buy for the money.
    Pros:
Great sound, convenient iPod placement and charging, bluetooth works great!
    Cons:
Repeat does not stay to user settings, there are other quarks as well that I am sure all stereos have

Sony DSX - S330BTX rocks Toyota Echo

Written By joesuburbs, urbana, il on Thursday, January 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

installation was less than 1/2 hour because this unit was replacing a previously stolen unit. After, installation the features and functions of the unit all worked perfectly. The ability to connect to iPhone via Bluetooth is amazing. Handsfree calling through the unit is state of the art... callers sound great coming through the speakers and callers report that my voice is clear with no feedback, road noise or background hum. Setting auto answer to on is another amazing feature... totally hands free operation to receive calls.

Connecting to playlists via Bluetooth is not completely intuitive and I still haven't figured it out... but you can choose playlists and songs via the iPhone via Bluetooth.

Accessing playlists when the phone is docked inside the unit is as easy as pressing the search button on the included remote control.

The dial is a little hard to read in bright daylight, but that might be more a function of the huge amount of windows in the vehicle. There is nowhere to hide from direct sunlight.

Finally, docking the iPhone inside the receiver is kind of cool... but it doesn't fit with all iPhone covers... having to remove the cover prior to use is sort of a show stopper... but with the external USB connection and the Bluetooth option... it is not always necessary. Haven't tried the USB Flash drive and Sony playlist software, but it looks amazing. The ability to drop gigabytes of music onto a Flash drive and create playlists is an amazing innovation.
    Pros:
lots of connectivity options... easy to set-up and use. Sounds great, works great. Affordable.
    Cons:
Bluetooth access to playlists not intuitive. Hard to see screen in bright daylight.

    Great Value

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, I never thought about buying a SONY branded stereo, but this one has so many extras for the price I couldn't resist. I stopped using CDs like 5 years ago when I got my first iPod. The BT in the unit is usable even without the (sold separately) wired mic. (I have a loud car so I have to roll up the windows) Having more than one USB ports is also a blessing. The compartment inside works great and just leave a 16GB USB stick inside and forget about it. Sound Q is very decent and the "loud" feature sounds good, but that's different to any person and it depends of all your configuration, amps, speakers, car acoustics, music source, EQ settings etc etc. The central knob is tricky to get used, but is has a lot of functionality built in. Menus are OK, at least the unit has a "Exit" button you can press anytime to get out if you are lost in a weird menu, and is not like you are going to set up the unit every time you start the car. The Source Selection menu is clear and intuitive. Didn't try the SensMe feature. Gave it 5 stars just because of the value, plus Crutchfield extras and free shipping. Very satisfied with the unit.
    Pros:
Sleek display (for the price), lots of info. The ability to play music from any USB drive. Multiple inputs. BT capabilities built in. Radio station name. Great Value. The unit is very fast when browsing music from the USB drive as well as seeking radio stations.
    Cons:
The unit doesn't index music from the USB drive as well as the iPod does, for some reson sometimes it doesn't reads the artist or some other fields found in the file metedata. No too much of a deal. Inserting the face is tricky also. Finally, the unit LOVES scratches!! Just by looking at it. After one month of use, the central knob is showing small scratches, just by touching it with my finger!

I like the unit. It read my iPod a lot faster than I would have thought and I have the iPod classic with a lot of music on it. Sometimes when playing from playlist the display will not show the next song playing. It will be stuck on the song that it just finished. To fix that I've had to skip to the next track and then go back to the song. I've had some other minor issues with the screen freaking out. That was fixed just flipping the unit open and closing it again.
    Pros:
Looks great. Sounds great. Hands free calling works good.
    Cons:
Sometimes the display will not show the next song playing on my iPod.

Can't understand why this was so highly popular...

Written By BillP, Annapolis, MD on Wednesday, January 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was way too complicated from the beginning. Too many bells and whistles and perhaps better suited for a teenager. I installed it in my Porsche, but only one side of the speakers works. I then replaced the original amplifier as well but still nothing on the right side. The feature of having the iPod inside was what I wanted but it doesn't work with all iPods, so my older iPod (which I intended to leave inside the radio) wouldn't work. I have nothing but praise for the Crutchfield folks, but the instructions they had for a Porsche installation were different from my model or year car. So I have a nice new radio that requires a book to use, and no sound out of the right side. Bummer. Should have avoided the project altogether.
    Pros:
iPod sits inside radio out of view
    Cons:
impossibly complicated if you just want a nice sounding radio.

Bluetooth streaming is flawless, navigation is just ok

Written By PaulH, Grand Rapids, MI on Wednesday, January 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the unit to use the internal USB with my iPod, but it turns out the Bluetooth audio streaming works so well, I rarely use the internal drawer. I like to be able to control my music right on my iPod so it works great for that. When I want to charge my iPod, I will use the internal USB tray. It works fine, once you get it connected and the drawer closed, but my iPod Touch 4th Generation likes to come disconnected while I'm closing the drawer. I will agree with other reviews that the multi-function knob is very hard to use. It is not as bad when you are sitting still, but driving down the road it is very hard to press the middle of the button and not accidentally press forward, backward, up or down. This is unfortunate because the way the on-screen navigation works isn't bad at all. I would suggest using the remote for that. Other than that, the audio sounds great, and it looks pretty good. I will say the blue color is a little too bright for my taste when driving at night, so I usually stick with the red option. Overall it has the best iPod integration that I have seen in it's price range, and I have not seen any other units that do this 100% perfectly at this point.
    Pros:
Good value, looks nice, Bluetooth streaming with iPod works great
    Cons:
Knob sucks, internal USB tray is a little inconvenient

For the price, excellent radio with bluetooth.
    Pros:
Excellent sound quality (both stereo and bluetooth). Sound quality is good at both ends of the phone calls (in truck and other party). I especially like the ability to increase call, mic, and ringer volumes when using the phone (FYI, other callers will say your voice is muffled if you use the mic hidden behind the faceplate...get the external mic as I did).
    Cons:
A couple of things Sony could improve on: 1. Provide us with the means to turn off the removable face reminder. Parking in the garage or getting out at the gas station, it's very annoying to have the 3 series of tones to remind me that the faceplate is still attached (DUH!). 2. Faceplate is a PITA to reattach! 3. The main selector moves too easily when trying to push it straight in to end a call while on the road.

My main interest in replacing my previous stereo was to be able to play my iPod. This unit is perfect for that. It hides the iPod in the receiver. Down the road I will learn to use the bluetooth capability of the Sony. I couldn't be happier with this product. I also want to mention that Crutchfield tech support was great in assisting my installation.
    Pros:
Ipod integration. Well built. Fine sound

Radio is very nice. Red color works great with Grand Prix. Bluetooth is easy to use and connects quickly. Never tried the built in mic, just used external mic. Sound quality is great on both ends. Ipod storage is awesome, I forget it's in there. Ipod controls are great too. The main knob is a little difficult to push in.
    Pros:
Bluetooth connects right away, remote is very easy to use
    Cons:
Main knob is hard to use sometimes.

I am very happy with it; it is installed on my jetta 97, no modifications needed. I used my ipod nano first generation inside the tray using the adapter wich it is included; no need to buy it. The bluetooth works perfect, no static and the internal microphone semms to do the trick, no complaint so far. The adjustments are kind of tricky the knob is used for all the setting that you can do such sound preferences bass booster, etc. It takes time to get used to it

Innovative Product, But Some Minor Issues

Written By Nebraska68, Dayton, OH on Thursday, January 19, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I saw this, I thought to myself, "Wow - that would be really great to store my iPod inside the head unit!" I hate wires running everywhere and did NOT want to plug my USB into the front port of ANY stereo. Got it - install was super-smooth and it looks great! The Tune Tray works great and no issues there. Bluetooth works flawlessly (I bought the external mic for better sound quality here). Only issue I have with it is minor usability stuff. When navigating an iPod while listening to music, a press of the center button (I have an iPod Nano 3rd gen) takes you to the artist/playlist/genre that you selected the song from. Not so with the 300BTX - pressing the joystick takes you to the top-level menu, which means to select another song in the same playlist (without pressing forward/back), you have to re-select the playlist option, then your playlist, and then you can scroll through the songs. Gets kind of annoying. The reason I put Build Quality at 4 stars is that the joystick doesn't feel as solid as I'd like. I'm not worrying about breaking it, but I like a more solid feel. This is a great product!
    Pros:
Tune Tray is super-convenient, great looks, and great sound!
    Cons:
iPod navigation not the same as using the iPod, joystick a little flimsy

This stereo was the answer to all my audio needs. Since I no longer own CD's and my entire music collection is on my iPod. The iPod try is awesome, no wires! The bluetooth is awesome for use with my Motorola Droid X, it takes and makes phone calls, caller ID, and streams music from my phone...
    Pros:
iPod tray, bluetooth, takes and makes phone calls, streams bluetooth audio from cell phone.
    Cons:
It would be nice if the brightness of the display was controlled with the vehicle dimmer. It's either dim or not dim.

    2003 F150

Written By Michael Coley, San Antonio. TX on Wednesday, January 04, 2012

I upgraded to the Sony DSX-S300BTX in my 2003 F150 King Ranch from the stock 6 disk changer. I Purchased from Crutchfiled because of the include installation hardware and technical support. I dont use any cd's anymore so for me that kind of digital media is redundant I use either my iPhone 4S of flash drives for music now. The real selling point for me was the bluetooth audio streaming and hand free calling feature. I can stream form Pandora with complete control to include pause and skip track from the DSX-S300BTX and included remote. The only difference between the DSX-S300BTX and the new DSX-S310BTX is that the newer unit features Android and Blackberry Pandora integration that ios on the iPhone already has with this unit. The Sound quality and EQ control is far superior to the stock unit that was included with the F150. I Purchased for $179 and could not be happier with my purchase.
    Pros:
iPhone 4S bluetooth connectivity with Pandora Control
    Cons:
    N/A

Superior Product at a Bargain Price

Written By Brian O, Grand Rapids, MI on Monday, January 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a fantastic stereo at an incredible price. The fold-down face was supposed to be incompatible with my 2006 Tacoma but it works flawlessly, so if you see a warning for the same thing, do some research. Odds are this unit will work for you because the face doesn't fold below the level of the unit itself. Bluetooth sounds great and pairs flawlessly, the unit played nicely with the Axxess ASWC, the sound is beyond anything I've experienced at a much higher price point, and the controls are simple and intuitive. The only (very minor) drawback is programming the unit while driving (which shouldn't be done anyway). Some functions require a prolonged push on the control knob without any directional fluctuations, which can be difficult on Michigan roads. If you're smart and do your programming before you hit the road, this won't be an issue. Buy this unit, you won't be disappointed.
    Pros:
Easy set up, great bluetooth integration, excellent sound, iPod storage, ability to turn off background graphics, first-rate shipping and support from Crutchfield
    Cons:
Some difficulty with control knob on rough roads

    Awesome!

This is an awesome aftermarket HU. It had all the features I was looking for (mainly integrated bluetooth & MP3) plus some. The internal tune tray is a fantastic idea; I currently have a USB drive with hundreds of songs stored in it.

Installation in my BMW was a little tricky, but as usual Crutchfield's tech support was there to help. Issues were mainly due to my BMW, not the radio. Fit and finish of the included install kit was great.

Add-on Sony microphone improved the voice quality when using phone via bluetooth. Recommended.

I also got the Axxess steering wheel control interface. It worked like a champ and automatically recognized my car. Effortless! Highly recommended.

Overall great purchase and very happy with radio and Crutchfield.
    Pros:
Easy to use; internal media tray rocks, bluetooth pairing effortless.

install in my BMW was tricky

    Parent's Dream Come True

Written By Doug, Neenah, WI on Saturday, December 31, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a stereo to put into my son's car that would work with his iPhone. I had two goals, easy to use so he isn't distracted while driving and make sure there is no excuse not to take a call from Dad. Well this unit exceeded both of these. The streaming bluetooth work awesome for connecting the iphone 4 to the stereo and the phone integration is perfect for taking calls. The music stops and he only has to push the main button to answer the call. Hands free and distraction free. I am so happy with how this worked out. Awesome value for the higher price. Connecting the iphone over the USB requires you to use the stereo menu to select songs which is a bit of a pain compared to an iphone. If you stream over the bluetooth then you still use your phone which is a very nice feature.
    Pros:
Works great with the iphone. I wanted bluetooth for taking calls but my son LOVES how you can stream music over it. Doesn't have to plug the iphone into the usb in order to play music. Also loved the Crutchfield install kits and instructions which made my install much easier.
    Cons:
I missed that the external mic was an accessory. Site should call this out more clearly. I'm not looking forward to tearing apart the dash again to install the mic :P The control knob and menu is involved and I don't want my son messing with a remote control while driving. However, he can use the bluetooth connection and manage music using the phone.

    Better than expected!

Written By Cody, Stillwater, OK on Wednesday, December 28, 2011

After a lot of research and reading reviews, I decided this unit would do everything that I wanted. I haven't used a CD in over a year now, so I opted for this guy. Installed this unit in a 2008 dodge ram and was impressed from the start. It went in easy enough and my Infinity Kappas sound much nicer than from the stock 6 disc changer. The only thing about my install is that the face doesn't quite fold down all the way and the multi way encoder hits, but it is easy enough to fold the face down and pop it off if I want to install my iPod in the tray. After hearing the bluetooth quality though, there is really no need if you have the same music on your iPhone. After you sync your phone with the bluetooth, you don't even have to take it out of your pocket when you get in and start your car.
    Pros:
Nice display. Looks good installed and best of all the sound is great even when streaming bluetooth. This thing has everything you need and the handsfree works great.
    Cons:
Takes a little getting used to when maneuvering through the options and menus. It is easier to use the remote.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, if I had to buy this radio again, I'd buy it again. Overall, I'm very happy with the quality of the item and think it's great. That said, the main selection knob is a pain to use. Pushing left/right/up/down is easy enough, but it's WAY too hard to push directly in to select something - which is a very common action. That is my biggest beef. It wouldn't stop me from buying the radio again, but I find myself using the remote for certain actions simply because using the main knob is too picky. Also, the sound clarity with Bluetooth for the other party is spotty. Even with the external mic, I've had folks complain about not being able to hear me very well, or they hear echos, etc. I think this is a general Bluetooth speakerphone issue, so I wouldn't chalk it up as a real problem with THIS specific unit, but more as an issue with Bluetooth as a whole. My wife's car has a completely different radio with an external mic, and it has the exact same issue. Speakerphones suck in general, this one is no worse than any other.

That said - great sound, great look, the Tune Tray is SUCH a great idea, and overall it's an excellent radio.

Do yourself a favor and take the time to learn the controls. It does a lot of stuff, so learning on the fly might be frustrating. Once you learn it, it's awesome. Except for that center knob, of course.
    Pros:
Great sound, easy to install, manages multiple audio sources very well, Ipod integration is awesome
    Cons:
The main knob is just WAY too hard to select with. Bluetooth calls could have more clarity, even with the external mic

    Absolutely awesome!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an absolutely, positively awesome stereo. Sounds beautiful while still using my stock 2009 SX4 speakers, lots of available pre-set stations, the display looks cool, and it integrates seamlessly with my Droid and Pandora (even pauses music when I shut my car off so I don't have to fuss with it). I tried a JVC before this that I found was just awful within 10 minutes, but I fell in love with this one in less than that. I've had it a bit over a month now, and I wouldn't trade it for any other.

That said, the 'joystick' type knob is a little touchy until you get used to it, and it has a little bit of a learning curve. Read the user guide, it'll make life way easier (and you'll enjoy it more). The built-in mic absolutely sucks if you're driving (they can't hear you, too much road noise), so fork out the extra for the external mic. Totally worth the extra for a stereo at this price. The remote is also a little big for me, I don't use it but I may give it another shot at some point.

    All-in-all, this stereo is AMAZING!!
    Pros:
Lots of features, sounds great, seamless bluetooth integration (Moto Droid with Pandora), and best of all, friends are jealous
    Cons:
Touchy knob, learning curve, sucky built-in mic (get external, not much extra)

Liked it so much, I bought a 2nd

Written By Chris R., Maryville, TN on Monday, December 19, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit to replace my factory radio in a 1999 S10. Installation with the supplied wiring harness & mounting bracket was breeze a and took less than one hour.

Features and operation of the radio exceeded my expectation. The radio increased my local radio reception. The channels are cleaner and crisper with this radio. I typically use the front USB port via an iPod cord, but my iPod Touch with Otter Box protective case fits in the tray fine. Controlling the iPod through the radio is not bad, but does take a little bit to learn. Both making & receiving calls is easy. Everyone says that the call is very clear. I chose to add the Sony XAMC10 Add-on Microphone for Sony Head Units instead of using the radio microphone. When receiving an incoming text message or phone call the radio will either mute the radio station or pause the iPod. The incoming text message will be read to you and you have an option to do nothing or reply to the text. To reply just simply speak your message and the radio will read it back to you before sending. I sometimes have to repeat my outgoing message before the radio understands every word.

I tested the Bluetooth music streaming option and a USB jump drive. Here are the results for each: Streaming my iPod via Bluetooth worked great. I tried the USB jump drive on both the external & internal connections of the radio. Navigation of the jump drive was just like navigating the iPod.

    I purchased a 2nd radio for my son's 2000 S10.
    Pros:
Bluetooth - text messaging, phone calls iPod interface
    Cons:
    no auxiliary inputs

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What a shame! An exceptional sounding HU that is crippled by its implementation. The HU recognizes my Sony Walkman part of the time. The rest of the time it says "not supported". The Walkman does not work at all on the USB port. Is it too much to ask that Sony supports its own product? My IPOD touch works fine, but the HU will not shuffle play by song. As for the "joystick" multi controller, it is a hazard to use while driving. The controller is sloppy and imprecise, and usually requires multiple presses to get it right. I will be sending this HU back, and getting the Sony cdx-GT660up instead. Same amp, same back end, same adjustments, but simpler "non joystick" front end with six radio preset buttons.
    Pros:
Exceptional sound. Clean and robust. Best sounding Hu by far in its price range.
    Cons:
The multi controller. The multi controller. The multi controller.

Great Unit - Was easy to install and looks great with Crutchfields install kit. Had to read the manual to figure out how to use some of the features. The bluetooth works well - thinking of adding the external mic to get the sound even better. The iPod connection works fantastic. The fit is great. Overall very happy.
    Pros:
Great Sound, Great Price - Got on sale - Well worth the price.
    Cons:

This product has surpassed my expectations for a head unit of this price. While its tru the scroll knob is a little akward to use during the course of driving this is easily remedied with the remote. The overall performane is high and built well it is worth the money
