Go digital without going broke

Ditching the discs and going digital doesn't have to break the bank. Sony's DSX-A40UI digital media receiver offers an impressive list of features for its price range, along with plenty of connections for all your devices.

Everything you need

Bells and whistles are nice, but you don't necessarily need them to go all-digital in your car. The DSX-A40UI has all the basics covered, starting with a sleek-looking removable faceplate that also offers the functionality you need to enjoy your digital music library.

A handy USB port gives you lots of options for enjoying your digital music. Plug in a flash drive that you've loaded up with music, or connect your iPod®, iPhone®, or Android™ to listen to music and charge the device. You'll be able to use the receiver's controls to search through your music, and Sony's Quick-BrowZer® feature makes it easy to find music by artist, album, genre, song or playlist. You can also connect a satellite radio tuner or a portable music player to the front auxiliary input.

Adjust and expand

The built-in amp ensures that your music will come through loud and clear, even when you're really cranking it up. If you're the kind of person who likes to fiddle with the settings to suit your exact tastes, you'll be surprised at how much adjustability you get with the DSX-A40UI's 3-band equalizer. If you're thinking about adding an amplifier in the future, you'll find a set of 2-volt preamp outputs on the back panel.

Sony DSX-A40UI Digital Media Receiver

This receiver offers a simple control panel with USB and auxiliary inputs.

Complete controls

Whether you're listening to digital music or your favorite AM/FM radio station, you'll be able to see what's playing on the single-line LCD display, which shows you track info, station ID and a clock. The faceplate's red button illumination adds a touch of style. You also get a handy remote control that lets your passengers play DJ while you drive.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

I moved up from another Sony deck because I needed the USB input. All of my music is on my iphone so I didn't need a CD player in the car. When you press "source" on this deck you have 3 options, Tuner, Aux and USB. I love that. No skipping through Pandora or bluetooth or all that stuff I don't use. Also if you tweak the EQ and loudness this radio sounds really great. I could not be happier with this choice and the Crutchfield price and customer support.

Pros: Simplicity, sound quality and price.

Cons: only one color for buttons. Red. Everything else is great.

I'm a casual user of this radio with typically short drives of 30 minutes or less. This radio works great with clear sound and is easy to use. I have used the IPhone feature and it works well.

I wanted an inexpensive stereo to replace the original in my 11 year old Scion XA and this radio fit the bill nicely. What surprised me most of all is how easy and quick it was to install, I haven't installed a car radio in 25 years and I still remember how much work had to be done to fit the radio back then, now with the installation kit that Crutchfield sent with the radio, you just removed the dash panels, unscrewed the old radio and installed the new one with the mounting kit and in 20 mins. it was playing.

Pros: Great sound for the price, installation was painless and looks factory.

Cons: None really, but now I think I should have paid a little more and gotten a radio with Blue tooth just for the novelty.

Cons: Wish it had bluetooth for hands-free phone calls.

Replaced old Sony AM/FM CD stereo with this one. Everything I needed for installation in my vehicle was included. Installation was easy and went without a hitch. The sound is great and you can customize it with the equalizer function. Have the owner's manual with you while you are setting everything and setup is a breeze. I like the fact that I can download CD's onto flash drive and stick it into my pocket and go. I used that function on a 4 hour trip and had loaded 45 CD's onto an 8G flash drive and it played perfectly; and it beats trying to find radio stations while you're driving.

Pros: Plays flash drive, can plug in my phone, or mp3 player. Ease of installation, sound, ease of use.

    Cons: I don't have any.

All around good radio, nothing really stands out about it, but there are no glaring deficiencies. I got it so I could plug my Ipod into my older Silverado, and it lets me do exactly that. Only con is that when you plug a usb device into the radio, it takes up the entire display, so I can't see the time while I play music.

I installed my radio the other day on my 2004 Kia Optima. Crutchfield made sure that the radio fit into my car, and a quick live chat with an associate helped me find an additional plastic housing for the radio for my car. He was also able to confirm that I didn't need to do any soddering, which was important given my low level of mechanical knowledge. If you are looking for an inexpensive but solidly made, great sounding, and easy to use radio, I would go with this Sony. All I wanted was a stereo with USB and an audio jack to replace my old stereo, which only had a CD player. The sound quality is extremely noticeable over the stock unit. Make Sure you connect the blue and white wires for "amplified sound" (which I assume most vehicles have) otherwise the sound only comes out of the rear speakers. Also make sure that all of the copper wiring is twisted together and the little plastic containers cover all of the exposed wire. I also recommend watching some how-to videos online to acquaint yourself with unplugging the car battery, removing the interior trim, and unplugging the other electrical units during the stereo swap. Be gentle with the plastic--on my Kia, I had to remove the entire center console including the horizontal part surrounding the hand break and gear shifter in addition to the vertical part surrounding the radio, vents, etc.

Pros: - Great value for money - Great solution to replace a stereo without an audio jack or USB input - Simultaneously cool and congenial to the style of even my 2004 car

Cons: - Only 4 radio presets (but 3 FM and 2 AM settings) - Lacks Bluetooth

Bought this radio as a replacement for the old Blaupunkt in My 87 BMW 528e its a solid radio with media capabilities I was not interested in a CD player since I have gone digital. I like the fact that it has iPhone Control as well a USB slot. 45 Watts are more than adequate for my needs and the unit clean. Installation was a breeze with ever thing needed in the box. I bought the installation kit due to the BWM having floating ground system similar to Ford but in the end I decided to just new wiring to the speakers and will be returning the unused hardware. I guess you could call me a fan of Sony products since most of my home electronics is of the Sony brand. But the reason for this has been the quality and features that they put into their products. I have been happy with their performance over the years and they are my go to brand. Because this unit does not have a CD player the price point is very affordable and delivers without compromise.

Pros: Great product from a well established brand with excellent performance and build quality at an affordable price. What more could you ask for?

    Cons: None to date.

Installation with the purchased mounting bracket, wiring harness, and antenna adapter was quite easy, much less trouble than I had originally anticipated. I found a couple YouTube videos to help figure out out to remove the dash.

Pros: Ease of installation with the provided mounting hardware.

Cons: The unit's instructions could have provided more details information for navigating the various functions and controls. I should have to figure so much of it out through experimentation.

We wanted the Sony brand name for reputation and wanted the USB access port for easy connect to our Apple products. This receiver features both. We don't play CD's any more so not having a CD player is no issues for us. It is simple to set up and use, not overly complicated and not overly packed with other features that we will never use. I'd say this is an awesome receiver for the price and I was surprised how great is sounds.

Pros: Easy to install, small body which takes up less space in dash. Nice color, matches the red exterior of our vehicle. USB port to play through and this port also charges the phone so no additional plug-in chargers into cigarette lighter sockets are needed. Allows us to play through his Apple i-phone, so we don't need one of those cheap radio frequency transmitter devices that you have to use otherwise.

Cons: Only has four pre-set buttons per channel bank, so you can set 4 stations on FM1, then four more on FM2, etc. This makes it necessary to switch from FM1 to FM2 to pick more than 4 pre-set stations. This is only a problem if more than one person drives the car.

The master sheets are a big help. I always get my car audio from crutch field. They are the best place to go for any of your car audio/video needs.

Cons: The only cons I have is that I didn't upgrade the factory speakers .

My boyfriend bought me this stereo for my Oldsmobile Alero beacuse my factory stereo was on its last leg. I have very few modern features in my '04 so this was a huge upgrade for me! I was afraid I wouldn't like the red color as the rest of the lights on my center and dash are greenish but the red on this stereo is very subtle and not bright. You can see it great during the day but it also has a dimmer so you can turn it down at night, if needed. I love the sound quality. I also was under the impression that the clock would only display for a few seconds before changing back. But I was pleased to discover that if you click the display button, the clock will stay on for as long as you please. I am able to save 12 preset stations which is way more than I need. I can VERY easily plug up my phone via auxillary or USB and listen to music. I also love the little door that closes over the ports. The stereo looks great in my car. I was worried it'd look a bit odd in my old car but it looks like it belongs there. I love having the little slot of space underneath too, to hold my phone. The install was so simple. My boyfriend did it, but I watched and it was a breeze. Everything hooked up easily with no issues along the way. And it worked on the very first try. Overall I am beyond satisfied. It looks great, sounds great, is easy to use and is everything I neeed. I am very pleased with it.

Pros: Easy to install, even with no electrical background. Looks natural. Sounds great. Lights are not distracting. Dimmer included. Clock stays on for as long as I want. Easy access to AUX and USB. Lots of preset options. Great price.

Cons: I only wish I could change the button illumination color from red. But for this price, I don't expect to have that much customization. And, the red is subtle and not overwhelming.

The radio was very easy to install with the appropriate Metra harness for my F150 and doesn't look too bad in the dash. The overall quality of the device is excellent for its price point and beats devices twice its cost. The FM sensitivity of the unit is nice. The major downside is the USB connection is essentially worthless for any Android device of the last couple years since MSC is a terrible connection method for phones and hasn't been used since Gingerbread Android. So if you have an Android device you are likely stuck with the Aux input. The sound quality of the unit is good, but would likely be better if I replaced the factory speakers.

Pros: 1. Nice Build quality 2. Good sound 3. Good FM sensitivity 4. Easy installation

Cons: 1. Doesn't charge higher powered smartphones well. 2. Severely outdated USB connection method (MSC) which will only work with flash drives or old Android devices.

I bought 2 of these stereos as xmas gifts and did the installations myself, one for an 01 Subaru legacy outback and another for an 05 Subaru impreza wagon. In both cases the stereo was about 1/8 of an inch wider and taller than the OEM stereo, and as a result it was tough to get it to actually fit and the end result was not as clean as I'd hoped for. I used the suggested dash kit which also did not line up flush with the panel. Crutchfield says the stereo fits in both cars, but if i could do it again I would look for one that has smaller dimensions. Anyway these were my 4th and 5th stereo installations so Im by no means a professional, but if you are looking to replace an older model subaru stereo you may want to look for something shorter and skinnier.

This is a great, budget digital media player, perfect to replace an factory radio. My factory radio was more than a decade old and needed an upgrade; while this doesn't have a CD player, it does have a USB port, which can play music straight from a USB drive. The sound is great, and installation was fairly easy, however the faceplate specified for my car doesn't fit it perfectly. It still looks good and is secured in place, but I would have liked to see it fit in a little better. It is fairly easy to use, and has an auxiliary port and USB port, so you can play music from a phone while charging it. Overall, it is a great product to help the user step into the digital age.

Pros: Great sound, looks great, has USB port, plenty of functions and settings.

Cons: Menu system can be a little confusing.

I took the gamble that I would not need a CD player. It is an outdated tech and costs too much these days to make mp3 cds. In fact, I am quite pleased not having a cd player. I have a 32 gb usb stick that I use with this unit and it could not be easier to transition away from fumbling with cds. I reviewed a LOT of different units before selecting this one. The off brand stuff had flashier screens, but poor reviews on quality. The more expensive units did not appeal to me as I have sunk entirely too much money into repairing my Jeep to afford a more elaborate radio. The price on this unit is quite good considering it still packs a solid amplifier, delivering plenty of power to my speakers. The quality of the converters is excellent, revealing detail in my mp3's that other sources I own fail to deliver. It has a basic 3 band equalizer, which is good enough to tweak the sound to an appealing degree. The built in eq presets are not bad either. Installing it was easy enough. Had to remove the sleeve and black plastic frame for the Jeep Liberty kit. But it looks good, and is only slightly inset from an otherwise flush position with the install kit. The buttons are of a high quality, giving a good click when pressed. The solid nature of the materials used is typical for sony products, even their cheaper units like this one. Nice clear screen, reasonable expansion options.

Pros: Compact Solid state - no moving parts Removable faceplate is compact, about 3/4 the width of the unit - easier to pocket. Clear buttons with logical functions. Easy to program presets, set clock, and search folders on USB drive. Very good quality amplifier and D/A converters. Much better than a stock radio. Radio reception is pretty good also. Display is bright and clear, and can be dimmed if too bright for driving - I find it fine at the default setting. Powerful amp drives speakers well

Cons: Only one aux output. You can add an amp and sub, but only one. No CD player might be a problem for people that don't convert their CD's to mp3 or own an USB stick to store them on. But that is the point of this unit - it is cheaper to manufacture because it lacks moving parts. And Sony did not skimp on the quality just because it lacks a CD player. The screen has only a single line of text. As such, you have to toggle between showing the clock, track name, album name, etc. But this is easy to

This unit installed so easy into my 2011 Honda Element it was not even funny. Crutchfield provided the wiring harness and instructions. I soldered all connections and used heat shrink over the connections. I did not need to use the provided install kit or the provided antenna connector. After soldering, everything just fit together and within minutes I was listening to my iPod. Basic unit but great for hoping in the car, plugging in your iPod and off you go. Good enough control over EQ, either preset or make your own curves. Radio reception was stellar, I was really surprised because the OEM radio got almost nothing parked in my driveway and the Sony was picking up stations from far away nice and clear. No CD player but that is what I wanted and it puts out 17 Watts RMS X 4, more than enough power for the average listener. That is more power than you think. Overall a very good unit for the price and while not mind blowing in looks or performance it WORKS!

Pros: Easy install. Easy to operate. Charges iPod while on the go. Good sound and excellent radio reception.

    Cons: None

    Should've been my first choice

I purchased a different deck first. Giant piece of junk! I should've gone through Crutchfield like everyone suggested. The Sony is easy to use, sounds great, and was a snap to install.

Pros: Easy install Great sound Removable face

    Cons: No dimmer

I got this radio in two days after ordering. I received all the necessary accessories to be conected to my minivan right away. I tried my galaxy phone to see how it works and did pretty good. Than I plug in my iphone and works very well for both apple and android. I recommended this radio.

It is a really good piece of equipment for the price. I would highly recommend It to anyone that is looking for a good sounding "Radio."

    Pros: Pretty much everything.

Cons: No sub out, you can't change the color. But hey for the price you can't complain.
