Go digital without going broke

Ditching the discs and going digital doesn't have to break the bank. Sony's DSX-A40UI digital media receiver offers an impressive list of features for its price range, along with plenty of connections for all your devices.

Everything you need

Bells and whistles are nice, but you don't necessarily need them to go all-digital in your car. The DSX-A40UI has all the basics covered, starting with a sleek-looking removable faceplate that also offers the functionality you need to enjoy your digital music library.

A handy USB port gives you lots of options for enjoying your digital music. Plug in a flash drive that you've loaded up with music, or connect your iPod®, iPhone®, or Android™ to listen to music and charge the device. You'll be able to use the receiver's controls to search through your music, and Sony's Quick-BrowZer® feature makes it easy to find music by artist, album, genre, song or playlist. You can also connect a satellite radio tuner or a portable music player to the front auxiliary input.

Adjust and expand

The built-in amp ensures that your music will come through loud and clear, even when you're really cranking it up. If you're the kind of person who likes to fiddle with the settings to suit your exact tastes, you'll be surprised at how much adjustability you get with the DSX-A40UI's 3-band equalizer. If you're thinking about adding an amplifier in the future, you'll find a set of 2-volt preamp outputs on the back panel.

Sony DSX-A40UI Digital Media Receiver

This receiver offers a simple control panel with USB and auxiliary inputs.

Complete controls

Whether you're listening to digital music or your favorite AM/FM radio station, you'll be able to see what's playing on the single-line LCD display, which shows you track info, station ID and a clock. The faceplate's red button illumination adds a touch of style. You also get a handy remote control that lets your passengers play DJ while you drive.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

    Q
I recently installed this unit into a 2006 Nissan Altima and after I installed it was very disappointed with how little power and volume my speakers had opposed to the original stock radio. I tried adjusting the gain and the EQ presets but still had little effect on the volume of sound it was able to produce. Any ideas why it's not getting enough power? It says it's a 4 channel 55 watt max output which would seem to be plenty of power if it in fact was receiving that amount of power.

can u change the bass and treble as well?
    tamara  Apr 10, 2016

    A
The bass and treble can be adjusted, but it is not labeled that way. The adjustments are found under EQ settings. Press the round select knob to go into "Sound Setup" (note - do not press and hold; that takes you to "General Setup"). After entering "Sound Setup", rotate the knob to select the desired item, then press it. You will see the following: EQ3 PRST, Balance, Fader, Aux Vol. Select EQ3 PRST, then CUSTOM, and then you will see EQ3 LOW, EQ3 MID, and EQ3 HIGH.

How many watts does the 2.1 configuration provide for the subwoofer? I'm using tactile transducers in the front seats, and I wondered if it provides adequate power or if I should install another small amp.
    escapev  Feb 17, 2016
    1 answer
    A
I'm not sure what you mean by "the 2.1 configuration" but the stereo does offer a pair of RCA pre-amp outputs for providing signal (full range/rear fading) to an external amplifier. The stereo's built-in amp (17 watts RMS x 4) really isn't enough to power external subwoofers so you'll likely need to add an amp. I hope that helps! This does have preamp outputs that you could connect to an amp for subwoofers: 2V/2Ch Preamp Output: The Sony DSX-A40UI is equipped with a 2-volt preamp output for connecting an external amplifier. The preamp output is full-range and will fade with the rear speaker channels (it is not switchable).

I hate this radio and am sorry I bought it. Spend a little more and get something you can enjoy.

We have an after market Sony in the car now, will this unit be able to use the harness that was installed for the old Sony that is in there now. It looks like it is a plug in.. looks simple but wondering if they are compatable?

For details on fit or installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on if this will fit and what you will need for an installation in your vehicle.

Does this radio play AAC files (made in Itunes) from USB stick (I want to use USB stick, not an ipod)? I am confused about this, since on some sites it mentions AAC files, but on the Sony site it only says MP3 and WMA files. Would be very grateful for an answer because I'd rather know beforehand than have to install it first to find out....

I'm sorry, I simply don't know. I don't use any apple products precisely because of compatibility problems. All of my rips are mp3 or flax.

I have not attempted to try AAC files via USB drive. I could give it a try in a couple of days. It's in my son's car and he is out of town at the moment. Let me know if you want me to give it a shot!
