Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit I received was pretty much useless. It wouldn't play some of my DVD's that work fine on a Samsung that I have since purchased. It also displayed subtitles randomly throughout the movies that it would play. The menu interface was really cheesy and looked like 80's Atari game technology. Excessively noisy (clicking and clanking) when loading a DVD and took a while to figure out that it had a DVD in it. I bought it mainly because it was a Sony but it was most un-Sony-like. I have a Sony surround sound system and it is fantanstic. Can't say that for this though.

Great CD player

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace my broken CD player since no one makes a dedicated CD player at a realistic price anymore. I was told that DVD players take too long to recognize CDs. Not so with this unit. I put in a CD-R with regular audio tracks, not MP3s, and it recognized it and began playing it as fast as a regular CD player would. I wanted a unit with a display on the front so I could see which track was playing. Works great as a replacement CD player for 1/3rd the price. Since it is not connected to a TV, I can say nothing about its picture quality.

Sony DVD player

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with this player. The only thing I miss is a clock but thats no big deal. Its such an improvement over my old player. The movies are so much brighter & a better picture. The price is reasonable & I would recommend it to all.

Great Features and Versatility

Written By Keith, Chico, CA on Tuesday, February 24, 2009

This player is worth every penny. It is very versatile in that it can connect to everything from a SDTV with RCAs, component or S-video to a HDTV with HDMI, digital coaxial or optical audio. It has settings that will make either of these set-ups look and sound great, including a nice pseudo-surround effect setting for non-surround sound systems like what I am using. Another great feature is that when it turns off it will resume from the exact spot on the disc where it was interrupted.

Overall you will not be disappointed with this player - Highly recommended!!!

Sony does it again!

Written By Rob, Peekskill, New York on Tuesday, February 17, 2009

I couldn't decide on a BLU-RAY Player or this player after reading many reviews on the internet, but I just purchased the Samsung LN37A450 LCD and it is a 720p & 1080i HDTV so why get the Blu-Ray when I can spend this much and get an awesome picture.

Set-up was fairly easy with the menu on the DVD, it took me maybe 15 minutes to set up my video and audio options..My suggestion is to read the manual first.

I Then put on the "Terminator 2" DVD ( 1080 Version not the Blu-ray either )and WOW! what a picture! almost looks as good as a Blu-ray..I then tried the DVD "The Incredibles" with DTS decoding and same WOW!..then the ultimate test for me.."STAR WARS Revenge of the Sith"..again Incredible picture and sound. I am extremely happy with this purchase and I used Component cables not even HDMI yet! Can't wait till I get my HDMI cable.

Excellent replacement for older gear. A little slow loading dvd, but flawless performance afterward. Likes all types of burned dvds (including DVD+R DL) and cds as well. The upconvert is impressive.
Great product in a small package!

Very Happy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this to feed my home theater projector and surround amp. The DVD upconversion to 720p (max my projector handles), and the sound, are both far better than the upconverting DVD recorder/player (by another manufacturer) I was using. Also the unit buttons being visible/operable from the front or top is much appreciated. I especially like the audio/video sync adjustment. This is important when using a projector and a separate home theater amplifier. On the Sony, it is easy to get to in the menu system, and it works in 10ms increments, visible on the screen. The 20 ms increments on my amp were never quite right. Overall I'm very happy and would recommend this to anyone.

Big Bang for Your Buck

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have purchased 5 of these units. From our football coach film room to my personal use they can't be beat. In the football room they step, skip, slowmo, just as we need for play review. Once you get used to the remote nearly as good as a cubic dollar remote system. As for personal use no issues, great logic and a great picture. Logic meaning when I press the play button while off, it starts and then plays. It return to the point of power off when you return to watch your dvd. I like a smart machine. One of the units is used only for CD music in our weight room, great sound too!

Excellent DVD player! This thing upconverts and holds all the digital audio. It's an amazing price too. Why would anyone need anything else? This makes the $300 Blue-Ray craze seem like a scam.

Great DVD player!

Written By Dan, Lexington, KY on Friday, November 14, 2008

We are very pleased with this DVD player. Not too much to say about it past that! The only issue we had was getting it to output into DTS. Of course, reading the manual probably would have helped, but where's the fun in that?

Sony DVP-NS700H

This was an excellent upgrade from my original Sony DVD player. I have a ten year old 35 inch Sony TV and this player provided a great improvement in picture quality at an excellent price.

The Price is Right

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nothing fancy, just a DVD player that works and is a good price. I needed a new DVD player for the guest room. I wanted to purchase something that was not expensive, but not so cheap it would have difficulty playing DVDs. The Sony DVP-NS700H fit the bill. It was easy to hook and program the remote to also control the TV. I cannot comment on picture quality because it is connected to a small not HD TV. It is very thin and when turned off it has no lights flashing or glowing display (nice for a bedroom). I have only had for a month, but have used a couple times with no issues.

good buy

Easy to install. Good value. Manual a little confusing(but then again I sometimes get confused at a stop sign!) recommend for non techies. Had to call customer service once and they were great!

One heck of a DVD Player

Written By Tye, St.Louis, Missouri on Wednesday, June 25, 2008

I connected this player to my 55 inch 1080P plasma TV utlizing the HDMI hookups and was stunned at the picture quality.
The detail was a little clogged ( too contrasty in dark scenes ), but overall quality and sound is fantastic.
I have watched Blue Ray discs on this set and although the picture quality was better,..it wasn't a whole lot better than the ones through the upconverting player. I compared the Blue Ray player to this player,..utilizing the same movie (Blade Runner). I used the Blue Ray version on the Blue ray player and the standard version on the Sony DVP-NS700H.
I have to take my hat off to Sony on this one,...A super picture for a great price. Now all thay have to do is work on that Blue Ray player price.

Good player, not great

Written By Tim, Philadelphia, PA on Tuesday, May 27, 2008

I purchased this DVD player along with my new Sony KDL-40w4100, figuring I wanted to get better quality out of my DVDs while I wait for Blu-Ray players to come down in price. I was fairly disappointed that this player produced only a marginally better picture than my 8-year-old Sony. I even had my old player hooked up with an S-Video cable and this new one hokked up through HDMI and still didn't see a huge difference. I found the player to be quite loud when loading discs as well.

The one benefit I did see is that it was able to play some of my older, scratched DVDs without a problem. Though that could be chalked up to it being new and clean. Overall, it's a decent player, but I don't think it really does the trick when it comes to upscaling. I'll stick with what I have until Blu-Ray comes around.

Great Performance...Great Price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've always had good luck with Sony products in the past and this DVD player is no exception. I was replacing an older Sony with this one and I'm really glad I did. The picture quality is definitely better by far and I'm only using component cables right now. I plan to purchase another one for my teenage daughter very soon. By the way Crutchfield is great, this is my fourth electronics purchase from them and I highly recommend the buying experience.

My Sony DVP-NS700H is great!

Written By Camel Burger, Columbus, Ohio on Thursday, May 01, 2008

I bought this player to be compatible with my Bravia TV and AV system. It is
simple to setup (I am using HDMI connectivity) and use. It works flawlessly
when using the Bravia Theater Sync features.

However, in my opinion, the best feature on this great DVD player is the
video up-scaling (digital video upconversion). It looks awesome on my 52"
LCD TV. You would have a hard time telling the difference between a good
up-converted DVD and an HD satellite channel.

I watched Bullitt (1968) on DVD in my Sony DVP-NS700H player and it even
looked good as compared to my old DVD player.

And how can you go wrong with the price!

Get this DVD player it rocks!

Product Research

Precision Drive 3 System: Precision Drive 3 reduces errors in playback due to imperfect, scratched or warped DVD discs.

Video D/A Converter: This player uses a 108MHz/12-bit video digital-to-analog converter. This high-bit, high sampling D/A converter helps to reduce digital artifacts to give you a better picture.

Audio D/A Converter: This player features a 192kHz/16-bit audio digital-to-analog converter.

Digital Audio Output Capabilities: You can select the sampling frequency and word length of the audio signal to be output via the digital output. You can select 48kHz/16-bit or 96kHz/24-bit. When set to 48kHz/16-bit, the audio signals are always converted to 48kHz/16-bit. When set to 96kHz/24-bit, all types of signals, including 96kHz/24-bit, are output in their original format. However, if the signal is encrypted for copyright protection purposes, the signal is output as 48kHz/16-bit.

Precision Cinema Progressive Technology: Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects image changes at the Pixel level. As a result, the picture is more faithful to the source; whether film or video-because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing Pixel behavior. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are virtually free from motion artifacts. This unit allows you to choose Interlace mode or one of the following Progressive modes:

  • Progressive Video: optimizes output for video-based software
  • Progressive Auto: When this setting is chosen, the unit will automatically detect if you are playing video-based or film-based software and convert the signal using the appropriate setting.

Note: To take advantage of this feature, you must have a television with a component video input that supports progressive scanning.

HDMI Output With Video Upscaling: The DVP-NS700H reads the data on a standard DVD disc at 480P and maximizes the video resolution to best fit your HDMI compatible TV. This unit can upscale a standard DVD 480p video signal to 720p, 1080i or 1080p through its HDMI output. This allows for you to enjoy the best in video performance while delivering digital video and audio over one simple cable.

Bravia Sync: When this unit is connected by HDMI to a select number of Sony BRAVIA televisions and other Sony audio and video components, in addition to audio and video transmission, will transmit control functions via the HDMI cable. Control functions such as "One Touch Play or System-Power Off" operations that took several steps have been reduced to one. By pressing the PLAY button on the DVD player's remote, watch your Sony A/V component(s) turn on, then your Sony BRAVIA television turn on and switch to the correct video input. By pressing the Power-off button on the DVD player's remote you can turn all of your HDMI connected Sony Bravia components off at once.

DVD/CD Playback: The Sony DVP-NS700H can play back the following discs.

  • DVD Discs: DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW/R DL
  • CD Discs: Music CD, Video CD, CD-R/RW

MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2, or Joliet formats, and DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+R DL and DVD+RW discs using the Universal Disk Format (UDF). Each disc can have a maximum of 200 albums of 300 files each.

JPEG Disc Playback: The unit supports standard definition and high resolution playback of JPEG images. This unit will play JPEG files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2, or Joliet formats and DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+R DL and DVD+RW discs using the Universal Disk Format (UDF). Images can be rotated in 90°steps and zoomed to twice or four times their original size. You can change pictures manually, or automatically using the Slide Show feature.

Note: This unit is also compatible with KODAK Picture CDs.

Slideshow Playback With Sound: The DVP-NS700H lets you display images as a slideshow with or without sound. If you want to play a slideshow with sound, you'll need to place the JPEG files and MP3 files in the same folder or you can use one of the player's pre-recorded background sounds. During a slideshow, you can adjust the amount of time each image is displayed; choose Normal (6 to 9 seconds), Fast (shorter than Normal), Slow 1 (longer than Normal), or Slow 2 (longer than Slow 1). Additionally you can select one of the following transition effects:

  • Mode 1: images randomly cycle through the effects
  • Mode 2: next image slides over the previous image
  • Mode 3: image sweeps in from top to bottom
  • Mode 4: image sweeps in from left to right
  • Mode 5: images stretches out from the center of the screen
  • Off: turns off this feature

Data CDs/Data DVD Playback: You can play back Data CDs or Data DVDs recorded in MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) and JPEG format. However, this player only plays Data CDs whose logical format is ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2 or Joliet, and Data DVDs of Universal Disk Format (UDF).

Custom Picture Mode: You can choose from the following Custom Picture Mode settings:

  • Standard: displays a standard picture
  • Dynamic 1: produces a bold dynamic picture by increasing the picture contrast and the color intensity
  • Dynamic 2: produces a more dynamic picture than Dynamic 1 by further increasing the picture contrast and the color intensity
  • Cinema 1: enhances details in dark areas by increasing the black level
  • Cinema 2: white colors become brighter and black colors become richer, and the color contrast is increased
  • Memory: allows you to adjust the contrast, brightness, color, and hue individually

Sharpness: This function sharpens the outlines of images on the TV screen.

TV Virtual Surround (TVS): TV Virtual Surround generates a convincing surround sound effect using only two stereo speakers; either with a stereo receiver or directly from the television speakers. You can turn this feature Off or select one of the following settings:

  • TVS Dynamic Theater: uses sound imaging to create a large set of virtual rear speakers and a virtual subwoofer; effective when the front speakers are close together, like the TV's speakers
  • TVS Dynamic: uses sound imaging to create a single set of virtual rear speakers; also effective when the front speakers are close together
  • TVS Wide: uses sound imaging to create five pair of virtual rear speakers; effective when the front speakers are close together
  • TVS Night: large sounds, such as explosions, are suppressed, but the quieter sounds are unaffected
  • TVS Standard: uses sound imaging to create three pair of virtual rear speakers; effective when using separate front speakers that are farther apart

Audio DRC (Dynamic Range Control): The dynamic range is lowered so the dialogue stays clear without dynamic bursts of special effects; choose Standard (DRC off), TV Mode, or Wide Range. Audio DRC can be used with any DVD.

A/V Sync: This feature allows for the alignment of the audio track to match the video which is necessary for some new televisions that buffer or delay video.

Fast/Slow Playback With Sound: This feature lets you listen to dialogue or sound while playing a scene quickly or slowly. This function is only compatible with DVDs, Video CDs or Super VCDs.

Note: This feature does not work when playing DTS sound tracks.

Picture Navigation: You can divide the screen into 9 sub-screens to find a desired scene quickly.

Multi-disc Resume: The player stores the point where you stopped the disc for up to 6 discs and resumes playback from the stored location the next time you insert the same disc. This feature can only be used with DVDs and Video CDs.

Program Play: You can play the contents of a disc (DVD-video, VCD, CD) in the order you want by arranging the order of the titles, chapters, or tracks on the disc to create your own program. You can program up to 99 titles, chapters and tracks.

Screen Setup:

  • TV Type: selects the aspect ratio of the player's video output to match your connected TV; you can choose from 16:9 Wide Screen, 4:3 Letter Box, or 4:3 Pan Scan.
  • Screen Saver: On or Off; the screen saver image appears when you leave the player in pause or stop mode for 15 minutes or when you play back a disc without video for more than 15 minutes
  • Background: select the background in stop mode or while playing a CD or an MP3 disc; choose Jacket Picture (shows the jacket picture if supported by the disc), Graphics (shows a preset graphic), Blue (background color is blue), or Black (background color is black)
  • Black Level: set the black level for the video signals output from the composite Video jack
  • Black Level (Component Out): set the black level for the video signal output from the component video jacks (not available when the player outputs a progressive scan signal)
  • Progressive  (Component Out): allows output of progressive signals from the unit's component video outputs to your television's component video inputs
  • 4:3 Output: adjust this setting to watch a 4:3 aspect ratio movie when you have selected 16:9 as the video output TV Type for this player; you can choose from Full (stretches 4:3 image to fill screen) or Normal (black bands on left and right side screen)

Custom Setup:

  • Auto Power Off: On or Off; the player enters standby mode after being left in stop mode for more than 30 minutes
  • Auto Play: useful when the player is connected to a timer (not included); when Auto Play is turned on, playback automatically starts when the unit is turned on
  • Display Dimmer: The display illumination can be set to Bright, Dark or Auto.
  • Pause Mode: You can select from Auto (no jitter) or Frame (high resolution) for the type of picture output in pause mode
  • Track Selection (DVD only): select Auto or Off; when Auto is selected, priority is given to the digital audio track with the most channels

Parental Control: This unit allows you to set two kinds of playback restrictions for DVDs using Parental Control and Custom Parental Control. Parental Control allows you to restrict playback according to a predetermined level. You can select a parental control rating from 0-8, which is protected by a 4-digit password. Using the same registered password, Custom Parental Control allows you to restrict playback of up to 40 specific discs.

Child Lock: You can lock the disc tray to prevent a child from opening it.

DVD/TV Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on certain brands of televisions.
