Our take on the Sony DVP-SR510H

Sony's DVP-SR510H is an excellent yet affordable DVD player. Your DVD library will look remarkably crisp and clear on your HDTV thanks to this player's built-in upscaling. In addition to the great picture you'll get excellent sound from your music CDs, too. (It even plays back MP3 music files burned to recordable CD-R or CD-RW discs.) If you own a home theater system you can hook up the DVP-SR510H and enjoy DVD movie soundtracks in thrilling surround sound. You'll also find composite video and stereo audio outputs for connecting to an older TV or receiver.

Does everything you would expect in a basic player.

Just fine

Does everything you would expect in a basic player.

Pros: Small and simple. Best thing about purchase was up front assistance and full information on the Crutchfield website.

Cons: Makes a little noise if you are using as CD player and are close to the unit (mine is at bedside). Remote buttons are pretty small.

Great little DVD player!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a plain vanilla DVD player for years and was perfectly satisfied with it. But, it finally fizzled. My requirements are simple: I want basic functionality to watch movies. This Sony fits the bill. It is actually a small device but it plays well and provides a very good picture. There are 4 (small) buttons on the front but no display. The remote is also small, as are the buttons, and might be difficult to use if you have big hands. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a basic DVD player and doesn't require Blue Ray features.

Pros: Easy to set up Easy to use Great up-scaling picture quality Comes with RCA cable (same as old DVD player) Low Price

Cons: Remote control is small For some people, lack of HDMI cable might be considered a negative

Poor Man's CD player

Written by: FRED from Delaware on October 17, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to provide CD input for a stereo in my living room. This is for background music only - not very high quality, but better than leaving the TV on the music channel. Works great for that application.

Pros: Low cost, easy to connect, compact size

Cons: Does not provide track number or track time, but who cares for background music?

This product is a solid inexpensive way to play CD's. I have not played a DVD with this unit yet. The player is convenient, space-saving, easy to use. Be patient when turning the power on, it takes 10 seconds to start. I found the remote the best way to drive.

Pros: space-saving

Cons: buttons on the unit are small and not terribly responsive.

A Simple Pleasure

Written by: ScottV from Colorado on September 21, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A simple little DVD player is harder to find these days, but this unit fits the bill. I use a Denon AV Surround Receiver as the "brain" of my system, and all components are connected via HDMI inputs and outputs--DVR with cable box, Roku streaming video, and my new DVD player from Sony. This slim unit connects easily to the Denon, and the picture and sound are all programmable to produce true Hi-Def 1080p picture and sound, or whatever your TV is capable of playing. Just what I was looking for without having to upgrade to Blu-Ray. The unit seems to handle various codecs and thus far I haven't found a DVD it won't or can't read. Thanks, Crutchfield!

Pros: Lightweight slim unit, easy HDMI connection, easy remote settings so no buttons are on the unit, plays many regional codecs.

Cons: None

Solid CD/DVD Player

Solid purchase that meets the need. Would have liked digital numbers on the player to show the CD track its playing.

Pros: Good price, nice picture

Cons: Noisy movement, can be heard when close to player. No digital display.

Not bad for the price.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a good player for the money and if used with an HDMI cable on a hi definition TV standard DVDs look really good. I would have liked a display on the front instead of a tiny LED power indicator, but for the money it will do!

Pros: HDMI Upscale and small size.

Cons: There should be a digital or led display on front of the unit.

Great DVD player

Written by: Darryl from Minnesota on July 16, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This nice little DVD player bridges the gap between my old analog TV and the digital age by having the RCA audio output jacks that nobody seems to have anymore. Plus with the HDMI out it can work with my newer HDTV setup if need be, and it plays a variety of disc formats. I have owned other Sony players and their quality and reliability is second to none. Oh yeah, it has great image quality too!

Pros: Plays many image and movie formats. Simple set up.

Cons: None so far.

Sony DVD-SR510H , Player review; this product was ordered for my wife

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Player review; this product was ordered for my wife after her old DVD player crashed. I looked to Crutchfield for A product replacement , and found this was the product I would buy for my wife. We entered into this purchase because of the following criteria, (1) This product appeared to fit in with someone not familiar with a DVD player . (2) Ease of set-up and simple to play. (3) Product price which is terrific (4) Lifetime assistance (5) The free shipping is something I could not pass up. When the product arrived which was faster then I thought it would be. We installed the product and my wife is very happy with it, as it is user friendly. When I look for electronics Crutchfield is the first place I go online to. I have purchased from Crutchfield for many many years, And I will remain a loyal customer for many years to come.

Pros: Easy installation, and simple to operate even for a person with very little Savy.

Cons: I have not found any yet !

DVP SR510 player

Written by: Jeff from Harrisonburg, VA on December 25, 2014

We owned the previous model, DVP SR500, for ~4 years until the "spin" motor was too weak to play DVDs. We have basic cable, so we probably watch more DVDs than the average household. Bought a newer model Sony at another store, but it did not have composite video (RCA-style) connections, and would not connect to our old TV. It has been an excellent choice for us (so far), and my Crutchfield associate knew exactly what I needed when I explained my situation to him.

Pros: Works with older TVs without USB/HDMI. Sony has typically been a reliable brand, although less so than in the '80s/'90s, when they were "king" of the mainstream brands.

Cons: No digital display like previous model to indicate function/clock time.

Great little DVD player. Great focus and nice color too!

Easy to connect and use. Does good job playing DVDs and CDs.

Pros: HDMI and digital coaxial outputs to go along with composite AV output.

Cons: Lacks optical digital output for audio. Does not sample at less than 48 KHz, which made it incompatible with my Nuforce Digital Input Amp (DIA). Somewhat slow response to control inputs. No display on face.

Sony DVP-SR510H Review

Written by: Mark from Stockbridge, MI on September 3, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This review only applies to use with a stereo music receiver. No connections were made to a TV screen or monitor. Also, the remote control unit was not used and is not evaluated. CD's used with this player were commercially purchased and no burned CD's have been evaluated. It got a mid level rating due to my annoyance with the manual button operation.

Pros: The player is light, compact, attractive and sets up easily.. The sound produced is crisp and sharp. Player operates without detectable noise during play. The price is reasonable and now all it needs to do is last.

Cons: The open, play and stop buttons on the unit need 2 or 3 button presses to work. There is a 3-5 second delay, mainly noticed on the play button, from when the button is pressed to when the function starts working. The button sounds and feels like it has been pressed but nothing happens. Now I wait until the music starts before leaving the player. Most of the guide references use for video applications. The print is annoying small like most instructions today are.

It works well

Written by: BillB from Silver Spring MD on June 16, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It works well. It's very small, so it can sit on a table top and not get in the way of the TV. The remote buttons are small and a bit complicated. And there are buttons for things that will never be used. But that seems to be a common problem with all DVD players. All in all, a good unit.

Pros: Small, upconverts video

Cons: Complicated remote. No display on main unit. You can barely tell if it is on.

The DVD has a geat memory. Even when the player is turned off or the DVD disc is removed and place inthe player again, the player memories where you left viewing the program. That is a fantastic feature which I am enjoying because I rarely finish a program at one sitting.

Pros: Great memory feature. Also, the player is compact. You can disconnect quickly and take i anyway.

Cons: The buttons on the player are small.

This is as no frills as it gets but it works just fine. I mainly use it as a CD player in my game room. My only issue with it is that it does not show track and time info on the front. If you are looking for a DVD/CD player on a budget this is perfect for you.

Pros: Sounds good and the picture is good

Cons: When using it as a CD player it does not have a track number or time display on the front.

Good Value

Written by: Phil from Boynton Beach Florida on February 8, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I consider myself to be above average in navigating remotes, but I will admit that even with the written directions, it is a challenge to set-up and utilize this player and control. I have a Sony tv, so I have some experience with their set-ups, but that becomes reasonable to use with a time or two, but this player in my view needs some customer friendly programing.

Pros: I like the value and quality so far, as it has had minimal use, as it is new.

Cons: See review of the remote; I think it needs real improvement

Does exactly what I need, for a great price. I cant believe how small this thing is. I needed a dvd player with rca plugs to hook to my very old stereo amp, and there aren't many options unless you want to pay a fortune. I only wish it looked a little more substantial. So tiny! Was happy to purchase from Crutchfield, a name you can trust. (I sure hope I win that gift card)

Pros: Rca plugs to hook up to my 20 year old luxman amp and a pretty nice remote control.

Cons: No led counter display, I miss that.

When set to 48kHz/16-bit, the audio signals are always converted to 48kHz/16-bit. When set to 96kHz/24-bit, all types of signals, including 96kHz/24-bit, are output in their original format. However, if the signal is encrypted for copyright protection purposes, the signal is output as 48kHz/16-bit.

TV Virtual Surround (TVS): TV Virtual Surround generates a convincing surround sound effect using only two stereo speakers; either with a stereo receiver or directly from the television speakers. You can turn this feature Off or select one of the following settings:

  • TVS Dynamic Theater: Uses sound imaging to create a large set of virtual rear speakers and a virtual subwoofer; effective when the front speakers are close together, like the TV's speakers.
  • TVS Dynamic: Uses sound imaging to create a single set of virtual rear speakers; also effective when the front speakers are close together.
  • TVS Wide: Uses sound imaging to create five pair of virtual rear speakers; effective when the front speakers are close together.
  • TVS Night: Large sounds, such as explosions, are suppressed, but the quieter sounds are unaffected.
  • TVS Standard: Uses sound imaging to create three pair of virtual rear speakers; effective when using separate front speakers that are farther apart.

Audio DRC (Dynamic Range Control): The dynamic range is lowered so the dialogue stays clear without dynamic bursts of special effects; choose Standard (DRC off), TV Mode, or Wide Range. Audio DRC can be used with any DVD.

A/V Sync: This feature allows for the alignment of the audio track to match the video which is necessary for some new televisions that buffer or delay video.

Remote Control

Multibrand TV Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on certain brands of televisions.

I like Sony A/V products. I selected this particular model because it has both an HDMI and left and right audio outputs. [ William  Feb 09, 2016 ]
Needed a good basic DVD player with HDMI -- no frills, less problems! [ Peter  Feb 04, 2016 ]
Simplicity...I'm an "ol' school" guy! [ Clarke  Jan 29, 2016 ]
dvd player has right and left audio outputs so it can be hooked up to vintage receivers. I just bought a dvd player that has coaxial digital output, hooked it up to a converter, and only one of my music dvd's will play through my stereo. Hopefully, this will work, like my older players did. An old friend once told me, newer doesn't mean better. I hope this will do what I want. [ Dan  Jan 21, 2016 ]
wanted a simple CD player and this fit my needs [ Julia  Jan 03, 2016 ]
This appears to be the only DVD/CD player they has the older style analog RCA outputs. If you need to pair this with an older amplifier, then this may be your last (low cost) choice. All Blu-Ray players seem to have eliminated RCA outputs. [ Brian  Dec 15, 2015 ]
Replaced my old CRT tv with new smart HD. Old DVD/VCR was not compatible and I did not need Blue Ray unit. Great price! [ john  Dec 04, 2015 ]

Dominick, I bought a few of these and use one in exactly that way, as an audio CD player for a Bose kitchen radio, plugged into the AUX jack. It works fine, although is a bit slow to start playing, (seem to have to hit PLAY twice) but once it starts it works fine. It was the only CD/DVD player I could find that had an analog output for my older TVs. [ Joel  May 28, 2015 ]
Sorry. No idea. [ William  May 28, 2015 ]
I dont know but this dvd player died pretty fast. [ KENNETH  Apr 27, 2015 ]
is this tv a 3D set [ Louis  Oct 09, 2014 ]
both forward and reverse. [ ANTHONY  Sep 29, 2014 ]
This is a DVD player only. It will not burn DVDs so it cannot record. [ JOHNNY  Aug 19, 2014 ]
no, that's a DVD player, not a DVD recorder [ Jimmy  Aug 14, 2014 ]
This is not a DVR so no you can't. [ ANTHONY  Aug 14, 2014 ]
No, this DVD player has no recording capability. It is only intended for playback. [ GREGORY W  Aug 14, 2014 ]
I don't know what that is, but Iam very happy with the product. [ STUART H  Jan 20, 2014 ]
