Compatibility/Specifications:

This unit can play the following discs:

  • 5" single sided 1 layer or 2 layer Dolby Digital and DTS DVDs (NTSC, regional code 1)
  • 5" double sided 1 layer or 2 layer Dolby Digital and DTS DVDs (NTSC, regional code 1)
  • 3" single or double sided, 1 or 2 layer Dolby Digital and DTS DVDs (NTSC, regional code 1)
  • 5" or 3" audio CD
  • 5" or 3" Video CD Version 1.1 discs (without PBC functions) and Version 2.0 discs (with PBC interactive functions)
  • The unit we tested could not play back an audio CD-R, but it could play back an audio CD-RW disc.

24-bit/96kHz Capability: This unit is capable of playing audio DVDs containing 24-bit linear PCM information with a sampling rate of 96kHz. This unit will pass a 96kHz 24-bit signal through its digital outputs unless the manufacturer of the software prohibits it through copy protection.

Single Dual-Focus Lens:  Precision Drive with Active Title Control for both CD and DVD playback.

Equipment Compatibility:

  • For home theater sound, it can also, of course, be used with any home theater receiver.

  • For high quality video and digital sound, this unit can be used with any television with RCA audio and video inputs.

Frequency Response:

  • DVD (PCM96kHz): 2 Hz to 44 kHz +/- 1 dB
  • DVD (PCM48kHz): 2 Hz to 22 kHz +/-0.5dB
  • CD: 2 Hz to 20 kHz +/-0.5 dB

Harmonic Distortion: Less than .003%

Dynamic Range: More than 100 dB for DVD. More than 97dB for  CD.

Macrovision Copy Protection: Prohibits hooking this unit through a VCR. Will distort the picture when a Macrovision encoded DVD is played, so the TV which is being used must have a video input jack.

Features:

Built in Dolby Digital Decoder with Bass Management: For use with 5.1 "Ready" receivers. The built in decoder will not decode DTS.

Digital Output: For Dolby Digital, DTS and PCM formats. Allows this unit to play back DTS encoded DVDs when connected to a DTS decoder or receiver.

Precision Drive with Active Tilt Control: Uses a single dual focus laser which compensates for defects for faster, more reliable playback.

Track Selection: Allows the digital audio track with the highest number of channels to be automatically selected for playback.

Resume Playback: Allows you to resume playback of a DVD or CD from where you last stopped as long as the DVD or CD has not been removed and even if power turned off.

CD Text/DVD Text: Displays on screen with disc memo when used with a compatible disc.

Digital Video Enhancer: This function makes a picture appear clear and crisp by enhancing the outlines of images on your TV screen.  You can select off, or levels 1, 2 or 3 (each level enhances the outline more).

Custom Parental Control: By using a 4-digit password you can set playback restrictions on up to 50 DVDs. This keeps the DVD from playing until the password is entered.  This is not the standard parental control which depends on the DVD software having this function and which is available in most DVD players (including this one), but is instead stored in the unit's memory and can be used with any DVD.

Picture Search: uses a 32-bit RISC processor to achieve high quality viewing in high speed, slow speed, and frame by frame in both forward and reverse with almost no pixilization. The speeds are FF2 (30X); FF1 (10X), X2, Normal play, Slow 1 and slow 2, any of these speeds can be selected in forward or reverse direction. Note that audio will still be heard through the analog output at a lower volume.

Bit Rate Meter: You can select a bit rate meter to show the current bit rate or how many layers the particular DVD has and an indication of the amount of the DVD that has been played.

Playback Memory: Allows you to store parameters (Audio, Subtitle, Angle, Virtual 3D Surround, Video Equalizer, and Digital Video Enhancer) for up to 50 DVDs.

Exclusive Sony MPEG-2 decoder.

Digital Cinema Sound: This unit has Virtual Enhanced surround which can be used with two speakers or multiple speaker setups.  with a two speaker system you can select from:

  • VES TV: Creates multiple virtual rear speakers using only front main speakers which are close to each other, such as those built into a TV set.
  • VES A: Creates multiple virtual rear speakers using only the front main speakers.
  • VES B: Creates a single set of virtual rear speakers using only the front main speakers.
  • Virtual Semi Multi Dimension: Creates 5 sets of virtual surround speakers using only the front main loudspeakers.
  • Off

With a four (or more) speaker setup you can select from:

  • Normal Surround: Standard surround
  • Enhanced Surround: Creates a stereo-like effect on Pro Logic Sources which have a mono surround.
  • Virtual Rear Shift: Shifts the sound of the rear speakers away from their actual position. If the speakers are to the side it shifts them to the rear, and if to the rear it shifts them to the sides.
  • Virtual Multi Rear: Creates an array of virtual rear speakers from a single pair of actual speakers.
  • Off

Menu Functions:

  • OSD: Can select on screen display language (English, Spanish, French or Portuguese)
  • DVD Menu: Can select language for DVD menu (Of course, this only works if the DVD has that language recorded)
  • Audio: Can select default DVD language.
  • Subtitle: Can select subtitle language or "audio follow" which changes subtitle language to match audio track.
  • TV Type: Can select 4:3 Letter Box, 4:3 Pan & Scan or 16:9 for wide screen.
  • Screen Saver: Protects against screen burn-in by displaying a screen saver graphic if the unit is left in stop or pause mode for over 15 minutes.  May be turned on or off.
  • Background: Allows you to select the background color while in the stop mode or playing a CD.  You can select (1) Jacket Picture: Shows the DVD jacket picture if supported by the DVD; (2) Graphics: A Sony Graphic (3) Blue or (4) Black

  • Playback Memory: Allows you to store parameters (Audio, Subtitle, Angle, Virtual 3D Surround, Video Equalizer, and Digital Video Enhancer for up to 50 DVDs.
  • Track Selection: Automatically plays the digital track with the most channels.  This can be turned on or off.

Audio Setup:

  • Audio Attenuation: Lowers analog output level for matching to other audio equipment.
  • Audio DRC (Dynamic Range Control): Allows you to select Standard; TV Mode (compresses the dynamic range for late night listening) and Wide range (no compression for highest dynamic range).
  • Center Speaker EQ: Can be used only when using the 5.1 channel outputs of this unit.  You can select flat (normal output), enhanced (which enhances the sound) or soft (which decreases output of the center channel above 8 kHz to prevent shrillness in the center channel).
  • Down Mix: Switches the mixing method so that Dolby Surround sounds better when used with a Pro Logic/Dolby Digital/DTS receiver and Normal when used with normal stereo.
  • Digital Out: Allows you to select output from the Toslink and Coax digital outputs. "On" turns on PCM, Dolby Digital and, if selected DTS output.  "Off" shuts down the digital outputs. Correct setting is important to avoid speaker damage.  It is especially important to turn DTS off if connected to a decoder or receiver which does not decode DTS. You can also set 48kHz/16 bit, which will convert a DVD 96kHz/24bit signal to 48kHz/16 bit or 96kHz/24bit which will output 96kHz/24bit signals through the digital outputs so long as the software maker has not encrypted the software. Note that whenever a Virtual 3D Surround mode is used any 96kHz/24bit signal will be converted to 48kHz/16bit.

Speaker Set Up (Bass management): Allows you to select the following:

  • Front Speaker Size: Can select large or small.
  • Center Speaker: Can select none, large or small
  • Rear (Surround) Speakers: Can select none, large (rear or side) or small (rear or side) - the speaker position needs to be specified for the virtual rear modes to work correctly.
  • Subwoofer: Can select none or yes
  • Distance (delay): Front can be set in 1 foot steps from 4 to 50 feet. Center can be set in 1 foot steps from 2-5 feet. Rear can be set in 1 foot steps from a position equal to the front speaker distance to 16 feet closer to your listening position.
  • Balance: Front and rear speaker balance can be varied from -6 to +6 dB in .5dB steps.
  • Level: Front and rear speaker levels can be varied -6dB to +6dB in .5dB steps. Subwoofer level can be varied from -10 to +6dB in .5dB steps.
