This handy zoom microphone helps you capture cleaner sound when you're filming distant action, like a child's soccer game or stage performance. When used with a compatible Sony camcorder, it automatically synchronizes itself with your camcorder's zoom — as you zero in on faraway details, so does the microphone. And when you zoom back out for a wide-angle view, the mic switches to a wider pick-up pattern to match the scene.

Controls

Power: The power switch is set to Off, Zoom, or Gun. Power is supplied to the microphone from the camcorder through the Active Interface Shoe so no cable is necessary.

Zoom: In the zoom mode, the microphone's directivity is synchronized with the camcorder's zoom lens. The mic becomes more directional (narrow) when the telephoto is used and less directional (wide) when the wide angle is used.

Gun: In the gun mode the microphone is not synchronized with the zoom lens and stays in a super-directional pattern.

Rotate: The microphone can rotate a little more than 180° once mounted.

Compatibility: The ECM-HGZ1 microphone is compatible with camcorders having an Active Interface Shoe.

Specifications

  • Electric condenser microphone
  • Weight: approximately 1.8 oz
  • Directivity: Gun (super-directional) or Zoom (adjusts with zoom lens)
  • Operating temperature: 32 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit

Sony ECM-HGZ1 review

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to shoot music videos on my HDR SR!2 video camera in live performances of my daughter performing in various wine bar and club settings in an attempt to get better audio without capturing the voices in crowd behind me by zooming in the sound on the performer. Overall not particularly effective in either gun or zoom mode over the built in zoom option already on the SONY on the camera. Both options made the vocals sound a bit tinny and like an echo chamber to some degree Turning it around to narrate video worked very well

Pros: Inexpensive ..lightweight.. reversibility of pointing toward subject or rotating around. worked well when narrating videos when swiveling mike around . Attaches easily to camera hotshoe

Cons: Sounds echoey in gun mode . a little flimsily made which is unusual in a Sony Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit will definitely improve the quality of the sound recording over the built in mic.
I am using it on a Sony HD SR-1, however the improvement is only about 25% better.
Its advantage will be in the directional mode (zoom) vs. the panoramic (gun), but for an add on at this price it does OK. If you want to cover distances over 20 feet with more clarity you will have to get a better unit. It seems a little "Cheap" in its build which is unusual for a SONY product, and the mount while convenient seems weak and sketchy. I give it 3 stars. Ok but not outstanding.

Gun mic big bang for the buck.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a major improvement over the built in mic. It is as good as you can get the sound
on your recordings for now. Easy to hook up and take down.
Also, the Crutchfield customer service is among the best in the industry.
I will be ordering more items in the future.

Thank You!
