Overview Details Customer Reviews Category Info Accessories Our take on the Sony Alpha SEL-55210 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 lens by Woody Sherman Stop. You've arrived. We've been there. When you first start taking photography seriously when it first starts taking tentative steps from being an interest to being a passion you're going to find yourself outdoors with your favorite "everyday" lens, and you're going to feel left short. When you move from an intimate, indoor setting to the expanse of the outdoors, you need a lens that can negotiate all that extra space. That's when you'll be browsing zooms online, and it's why you're lucky you've landed here, right now: this SEL-55210 zoom lens is a great choice for anyone with an NEX-series camera. With its impressive reach and optical image stabilization, you'll find yourself composing tight, compressed perspective shots you simply couldn't get before. You'll have another arrow in your artistic quiver. And you'll feel confident while capturing images, knowing you've got another tool for making great work. The SEL-55210 has 2 aspheric surfaces and 2 extra-low dispersion elements inside the zoom assembly. What this means for you is razor-sharp focus with a minimum of color fringing or smearing. A quiet focus motor makes this a great lens for videography, too. Features Overview: The Sony SEL55210 is an E55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS wide-range zoom lens designed for use with Sony α NEX-series cameras. Its 55-210mm focal length range is equivalent to 82.5-315mm in 35mm photography, which is ideal for sports or nature shooting. Compatibility: The lens has an E-mount, which is compatible with Sony α NEX-series cameras. ED Glass: The SEL55210 has two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements which helps suppress chromatic aberration and color bleeding at all focal lengths, providing excellent image quality throughout the zoom range. Internal Focusing: Internal focusing makes smooth, responsive auto-focusing possible with minimal noise. This makes the lens perfect for video capture. Optical SteadyShot (OSS): The lens has built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, which helps achieve crisp, stable images and video in low-light or when zooming in on distant subjects. Lens Hood: The lens comes with the ALC-SH115 lens hood which helps prevent lens flare. When installed, the lens hood adds approximately 2" to the overall length of the lens. The hood can be stored on the lens by installing it backwards. Written By Seth, Silver Spring, MD on Sunday, February 05, 2012 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) Crutchfield Customer Review The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order. It is the middle of year 2 for Sony's NEX line of mirrorless cameras, and more lenses are finally covering the ranges. Currently, if you want telephoto capability beyond the 55mm of the kit zoom, you have 3 options. Sony and Tamron both have lenses that cover 18-200mm but are huge and have street prices in the $700-800 range. This lens is designed to cover the distance beyond the 55mm of the kit zoom for a fraction of the full-range lense prices. The rings on the lens are plastic instead of metal, and reports on the web claim that it isn't as sharp at full zoom as the full-range lenses. However, I used it in January 2012 on a trip to Vietnam and Japan, and was ecstatic with the results. I used the zoom to catch details at the top of the Cham Temple in Nha Trang, and get nice clear full shots of Mt. Fuji and the Japanese countryside at maximum shutter speed on my NEX-3 through the window of a speeding bullet train. I'm not a professional photographer, and I've had my NEX-3, which is my first SLR, since November 2010. I'm sure those with super expensive lenses will find some image quality and focal speed quibbles with a cheaper lens such as this. But I can tell you that equipped with a NEX-3, the 16mm pancake, the kit 18-55mm zoom, this 55-210mm telephoto, and the cheap wide-angle converter that snaps on the 16mm pancake, I'm able to take impressive photos in almost any scenario, and it all fits into a very small messenger bag with room for other things. Amazing! Pros: Covers the range from full zoom of the kit lens out to 210mm Not as chunky as the 16-200mm lenses Amazing value compared to alternatives Cons: Plastic rings Requires you to bring other lenses (at least the kit zoom) in most situations Definitely not pocketable Some complain about slow focus time (but doesn't bother me) so probably not ideal for sports 4 out of 4 people found this helpful Was this review helpful?
