About the Sony XS-GS1621C

Alexander H.

Give your sound dimension

Step up to a new level of sonic performance with Sony's XS-GS1621C 6-1/2" component speaker system. The package includes two 6-1/2" woofers, two 1" dome tweeters, and a pair of outboard crossovers. Bi-amping

Using its bi-amp capability, the XS-GS1621C's crossover allows you to take full advantage of this system's 75 watt RMS rating.

Step up to a new level of sonic performance with Sony's XS-GS1621C 6-1/2" component speaker system. The package includes two 6-1/2" woofers, two 1" dome tweeters, and a pair of outboard crossovers. Each woofer features a rigid, reinforced special Kevlar that delivers focused midrange and strong midbass punch, even during high-volume playback. A tough rubber surround supports the cone, so this speaker will stand up to the inevitable abuse that awaits all car speakers.

And if you crank old favorites through these speakers, the separate 1" synthetic fiber dome tweeter will reveal the natural detail that your factory speakers couldn't even hope to reproduce.

Tweak away

Included external 2-way crossovers allow you to get cleaner highs and fuller lows by sending the appropriate frequencies to the woofer and tweeter. Sony also provides two mounting options, so you can install your tweeters closer to your ears to achieve the best possible sound staging for your car. With that kind of powerful imaging, you might find yourself taking the long way home.

They look good too

If you're planning on a custom installation, Sony includes refined, black grilles for seamless integration into most car interiors. Sony has also reduced the overall mounting depth, making this system a great fit for more vehicles. These component speakers are protected by the GS Series 3-year warranty, and they'll handle up to 120 watts RMS – so go ahead and rock out.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Product Research

Features

Woofer Cones: The XS-GS1621C woofers use an MRC cone (Mica Reinforced Cellular glass fiber composite) with Kevlar to reduce weight and increase rigidity, delivering full bass response.

Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, each woofer uses a rubber surround.

Tweeters: The tweeters are 1" soft synthetic fabric domes. They can be flush mounted, surface mounted, or surface mounted at an angle using the included housings.

Tweeter Mounting Dimensions:

Frame Width Frame Length Cutout Diameter Mounting Height Mounting Depth
Flush Mount 1.911" 1.911" 1.6" 0.31" 0.555"
Flat Surface Mount 2" 2" N/A 1" Screw Depth
Angled Surface Mount 2" 2.25" N/A 1.17" Screw Depth

Crossovers: Each crossover has high-pass and low-pass outputs with a 5 kHz crossover point. The high-pass slope is 12 dB/octave and the low-pass slope is 6 dB/octave. A switch inside each crossover allows you to set the tweeter output level according to your system requirements and personal preference; choose 0 dB (factory setting) or -3dB. The inputs and outputs are screw terminals; they will accommodate bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.315" wide. There are two mounting holes in the base of each crossover.

Bi-amp Inputs: The 2-way crossovers have separate inputs for the woofer and tweeter; this lets you drive the system with dedicated power for the separate speaker elements, instead of sharing power. If the system is powered using only two amplifier channels, the woofer and tweeter inputs should be shorted together.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Length: 4.75"
  • Width: 2.7"
  • Height: 1.2"

Mounting: The speakers can be easily mounted in a variety of 6-3/4" applications. Given the required cutout, they will also fit into the opening for a typical 6-1/2" speaker (approximately 5" diameter) but the screw hole pattern is larger than a standard 6-1/2", so new holes would have to be drilled.

Specification Note: Sony's rated power spec for the XS-GS1621C is 75 watts (derived using IEC 60268-5 standards). In the manual they also list the CEA 2031 compliant RMS power as 120 watts. We've adopted the 120 watt RMS rating because CEA 2031 is the more common rating system.

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

Q
How is wiring for the non-jbl highlander (2016) suppose to work? As far as I understand from diagrams both stock speakers are full range and wired in parallel without any crossover. So I suppose to "split" the wiring so I can install crossover in front of them. Please advice.

Q
My car has separate woofer and tweeter at the front, which speaker wire should i connect to the xs-gs1621c's bi amp? Is it both? Woofer wire to the woofer input and tweeter wire to the tweeter input?

A
What Samuel described above is correct--unless you're using two separate amplifier channels to power the tweeters and woofers separately, you would take the full-range signal from the factory radio and connect that to one side of the crossover. The other side of the crossover is then shorted together. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Bi amp? Do you mean the crossover? If so and you are using factory wires from your head unit, just use the wire that runs to the woofer. It's just a full range signal to that speaker with another wire spliced that runs to a tweeter that has a resistor to block the low frequencies. Now since your signal is full range you would run the factory wooferl wire to either side of the input of the crossover and use a jumper wire to the other side of the input; positive to positive and negative to negative. The crossover will split the signal. Hope this helps, Samuel M.
