Overview

Our take on the Sony MEX-GS600BT

Sony's App Remote feature turns smartphone interactivity into a two-way street. With your phone's touchscreen, you can do things like selecting sources, picking radio stations, and launching apps. On the other side of the App Remote's two-way street, you can select apps using the stereo's source button, the same way you'd choose the CD player or radio as your source. And, with your Android™ phone paired up, this receiver will read any incoming text messages out loud, so you can keep your eyes on the road.

Sony CD receiver

Your Sony receiver will access apps on your phone, and your phone acts as a very cool remote control.

The foundation of a great car audio system

Interactivity is definitely fun, but you need a high-performance car stereo to create a great-sounding audio system. Not only does the CDX-GS600BT include an impressive array of sound-shaping tools, it also features a full complement of 5-volt preamp outputs that'll send a strong, clean signal to your external amps. Tweak the tonal parameters with the 7-band EQ, set up a perfect stereo "sweet spot" with digital time alignment, and use the frequency filters to make your speaker setup shine. And, if you're not using outboard amps, Sony's powerful Digital Reality amp, noted for its solid sound output and realistic audio reproduction, will drive your speakers very capably.

Bluetooth takes your system to another level

The CDX-GS600BT's built-in Bluetooth adds a new level of convenience and capability to your car. You can pair up your mobile phone and talk hands-free when you get a call, plus you can stream the music stored on your mobile device wirelessly to this Sony receiver.

App Remote in this Sony receiver

App Remote lets you choose your source from your smartphone (smartphone screen shown).

Your tunes, your look

Pop in a CD, plug your iPhone® or iPod® into the rear USB input, or browse your favorite Pandora® Internet radio stations from the receiver's controls. And you can add on a SiriusXM tuner (subscription required), if you want to experience an unparalleled variety of news, talk, sports, and music. Even cooler, you can choose from over 35,000 colors to make this receiver look right at home in your dash. Sony backs this special receiver with an awesome 3-year warranty.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Simple and easy with great sound

Long long ago in a Galaxy 500.we use to set the presets on our am/fm radios by pulling out one of six preset buttons and then push it in to lock it onto the wire inside the deck. After installing an 8-track on the floor we were all set to go cruisin'. The Sony MEX-GS600BT is not only an excellent sounding deck, (excuse me."head unit"), with COMPLETE control of your sound field but a technological wonder compared to the days of old. Hands free Bluetooth, App Remote, voice texting (if you're set up for it), USB, Ipod control, accessory jack and a remote control to list a few things. There are many options and settings. I recommend you write down your settings once you've tweeked them to perfection before you disconnect your battery again. I installed this deck using external amplifiers and component speakers. Happy, happy, happy..

Pros: Once you have your sound field set up, it's incredible.... I like having the USB port on a nice long cable out of the back of the deck. With it routed to the glove box my Ipod is out of sight, out of mind and I have full control from the deck.

Haven't got around to testing all the features but everything this thing has is mind blowing and for the price can't be beat Bluetooth audio streaming and receiving phone calls is flawless the settings menu can be a bit intimidating but just like anything else after playing with it it will be a breeze I recommend this unit as a main head you unit or a hub to attach other devices through bluetooth or usb.

Pros: Tons of features, bluetooth features (audio streaming, hands free calling external microphone included) all work great.

Cons: menu can seem intimidating at times , finding the perfect spot for the external microphone

This Sony is so much better than the Bose-Delco that came with my 93 Camaro that it is almost unbelievable. Doing business with Crutchfield is the absolute best, especially when compared to the "uninvolved" attitude of retail stores in our area.

Pros: Great sound . Vast ajustability of the sound with the equalizer, loudness, and position controls. Also it is a wonderful value for the cost. I would buy this Sony again without hesitastion.

Great stereo. Crutchfield included all the wiring harnesses and installation kits for free. Sounds great, blue tooth work well, the only issue I have is that it's been really cold here and the stereo won't turn on until the temp comes up inside the cabin, with in my crappy, old civic is about 10-12 mins. I assume this is a safety type feature. Other than that, it's great.

Pros: Bluetooth, easy install with the kit Crutchfield included. Remote control. Aux and USB input. I can play music and audio books straight from a thumbdrive.

Cons: Needs to warm up if it's extremely cold out before it powers on.

I was blown away by the level of service, help, communication and exceptional follow-up from Crutchfield. These guys do it RIGHT! I have shopped on-line exclusively for years and never before have I had an experience like this one. The last time I purchased equipment from Crutchfield was in the '90's. I used to go to them for everything. After being in the car audio business for many years, I started shopping price and ease of access to the equipment. I went away from Crutchfield and shopped mnay other sites over the years. Recently though, I noticed their level of details about the products they offered and the fitment guide for vehicles is bar-none the best in the industry. Pricing? It was the best I found ANYWHERE on the internet (for the product I was purchasing)! Now, for the product: Simply, it is amazing. I hardly ever read the manuals, but i took the time to this time. Took me about 15 minutes and it all is intuitive. Sony's operating system is great, simple and easy to navigate. I simply wanted 5V pre-outs; MP3; BT audio, Pandora control; BT phone; a 7 band EQ; and a good warranty. Sony's is the best. 3 years parts and labor! Wow! For car audio, that's great! All the install parts and pieces, install guide and such that Crutchfield supplies is top notch. This works great with my Android phone! One pairing and the two remember each other and pair automatically. Pandora is one button press away. Phone calls are clear and loud. Super product!

Pros: Crutchfield support, installation supplies, fast shipping. Sony is clear and very adjustable to my needs. I am particular about my sound and so far, I love it.

Cons: The surrounding buttons to the display to seem to stay brighter and are a bit harsh at night. None other!

The head unit paired easily with my Samsung Galaxy S3 for hands free calls. The sound quality seems good and like the illumination options. It has many features and promises to meet all my audio needs but at a price. There are so many features that you have to scroll through to get to where you may want to go. I plan on keeping the manual in the vehicle for reference until I get the hang of it. Overall a good value. I caught it on special for $129 which makes it even a better deal as I thought for all the features $199 was a fair price. Crutchfield comes through again.

Pros: Numerous features, sound quality, good build quality

Cons: Complicated menu and no real short cuts to get to particular areas.

Like mentioned in the title, it works but not well. As for features it has it all except navigation. The audio quality is good when it doesn't skip via USB or bluetooth streaming (no problems with am/fm tuner, sat, or aux cable so I know it's not my wiring). I have stopped using the usb cable because the audio cuts in and out at random which became unbearable. I've found the bluetooth to be the best solution even though it still periodically cuts in and out but not nearly as bad as the usb. Overall a good product, but I'm sure there are better ones out there.

Pros: Audio quality, features, and AppRemote.

Cons: Audio cuts in and out at random (only usb and bluetooth). The anti-theft beeps when vehicle is turned off are annoying.

This is really an amazing piece of equipment. The only things I didnt like about it was that it is quite distracting to change any sound settings while driving, and that there is no front USB port. Really, these issues are minor in comparison to the good qualities of the receiver. Every setting I could think to ask for, it has. P.S. The App Remote app is not all that bad, except for that it doesn't transfer the album art instantaneously, you need a 3G connection to do it. Since I'm using an iPod, that isn't an option for me. Simply browsing through music is also a hassle, so the app really never gets used.

Pros: Very detailed sound settings, color selections are awesome, the buttons click nice, dial moves with ease, all of the components are high quality, Bluetooth and calling through the receiver is a breeze.

Cons: The markings for the secondary functions of each of the number buttons are impossible to read at night, sometimes even during the day in weird lighting. No front USB port. Seriously though, I'm just nitpicking, this thing is the bomb.

I have enjoyed many Sony products over the years and the brand has always provided excellent value for the price but I am bit disappointed with this head unit. The App Remote software seems a bit dated and is not available on other smart phone besides Apple iPhone. The interface to the equalizer could not be found anywhere in the application. The remote control included with the unit is functional but not much more of and improvement to the buttons located on the head unit. There a lot of options built into the setup menus and takes some time to adjust the system upon initial setup. I paired this unit with Kicker speakers (6 1/2" front, 6 x 9 rear), no amplifier, and the system is a definite improvement over the factory Dodge Infinity Premium Audio it replaced. Cell phone pairing via Blue Tooth works well along with the USB and Auxiliary inputs. Overall, I am pleased with my new system, but not thrilled.

Pros: Good audio performance. Blue Tooth pairing with cell phone works well, LED display is visible in daylight and the color is easily customized. Installation was straight forward.

Cons: App Remote software is a bit dated and lacks functionality; installation required bypassing the factory amp and instructions for doing so were NOT included on the Master Sheet for my car. No front USB connector. Case for detachable faceplate is not included.

Pros: Tons of features for a good price. Bluetooth, usb, iPod compatible, handsfree, etc. Sounds great. removable faceplate

Cons: single din (not a con if the car is older). no case for the removable faceplate.

I have been putting good car radios in my car for a long time and this is my best set-up. Installing it took me a little longer to get what I wanted but it was worth it. Having bluethooth makes it better. I have MTX components in the front and two 12 inch woofers in the back and this unit brings everything together. the sound of this deck can be shaped to whatever you like. I like all types of music and this makes them all sound great at any volume. It did take a while to find out how to set the sound but it was worth it. There are only two kinds of music, good and bad.

Nice deck. I upgraded from an older aftermarket Sony, circa 2004. This was a big step up! I also upgraded the stock door speakers, which was also a major improvement, to say the least. The receiver is easy to use, easy to install on my 99 Civic, and looks and performs great. Great value! I have used the bluetooth only a few times so far, but it definitely works well on my end (easy to set up, use, and receive/place calls); the other end of the call says that it sounds like I stepped a couple feet away from the phone, but this is bluetooth for you. I might look into getting a different mic eventually, but it works for now.

Pros: Good sound. Easy to install (thanks to the harness provided by Crutchfield). Good sound, good bargain.

    Cons: None yet.

My son and I installed the Sony MEX-GS600BT in a 1995 Mercury Gran Marquis that my two sons (18 and 16 yrs) use for travel to swimming and diving, band practice, etc. My personal car has the capabilities of hands-off phone and Bluetooth built in, and after experiencing this I made sure to get a receiver with those same capabilities so the boys can keep their hands on the wheel when I need to talk to them. Everything works just as well as in my car, so I am totally satisfied (5 stars). My wife came by as we were checking out the sound and colors for the first time. She commented to me on the side that he actually looked excited. This factored into my high "cool factor" rating. Called the Crutchfield tech twice with great response.

    Pros: No muss, no fuss.

    Cons: None.

I like the unit, but it's difficult for my wife to go through all the sources to get to the one she wants to use. Once you turn the unit on, it comes up with Tuner, and if you turn the dial to adjust the volume like you normally would, it changes the source. Simple, yes, but difficult for her to get used to. We're making progress though. It sounds way better than our OEM 2004 Honda base radio, plus the RDS and Bluetooth for phone/audio were mandatory. These are the features we wanted most. About the RDS - it's nice, but get a unit that doesn't scroll. I could see someone getting into an accident because they were waiting for a song name or artist to scroll by. Still a good solid unit.

Pros: RDS, Bluetooth with phone/audio, USB and Aux connectors, great radio and sound.

Cons: Waiting for RDS to scroll; (relatively) complicated menu navigation.

The radio is great in all respects and the sound is very good, but I thoroughly dislike the operation. The controls are very confusing and the buttons are tiny. Whatever happened to the good old two knob radios! I had a Kenwood that this radio replaced and although it had a lot of buttons it was very logical. It had a separate rocker for seek up or down. Apparently everyone likes the present light displays that seem to be prevelent with the present generation of radios. I personally would have preferred a more simple operation. I only replaced the Kenwood because it quit operating and I couldn't find anyone to repair it.

Pros: Easy install. Powerful sound with stock speakers. Plenty of features for the money. The mic for the phone works well even with the top down. That is huge to me.

Cons: Small buttons. And the rear USB connection is worthless to me unless I'm willing drill an escape route for it. I'll just rely on the aux and BT for my iPhone instead.

I bought this radio upon a recommendation of a friend. It was very easy to install and sounds much better than my factory radio. The tuner is very good and picks up stations that my factory radio could not. The Bluetooth feature works well, is easy to understand and is the reason for me changing out the stock head unit in the first place. I had a conversation with a Crutchfield rep before purchase to verify the fitment and his counsel was very helpful I have already told another friend that saw it that he should buy one and I will install it for him.

First off I have had at least 10 after market stereos for my rides. Alpine , Kenwood , you name it. This Sony with Bluetooth rocks them all. Way to cool from color changes to bluetooth and everything in between. I couldn't believe it even has the 5V pre amp outs. Top Notch. The power coming out of this bad boy is amazing. Running a JL Audio amp on 2 Pioneer 10s is decent for now. With the infinity doors speakers front and back baffled makes it that much better. So many tuning options I just settled for a basic setting for now. Steaming music VIA bluetooth is awesome in your ride. No need for optional cords makes it that much cooler. If your looking to replace your factory unit this is definitely the technology to be using.

Pros: Ease of Use Big Power multiple tuning options 5V pre amp outs Bluetooth audio & Phone calling Phone app controllable

Cons: Blue Tooth Connectivity some times lags but thats about it

I was amazed at all the features that is included on this head unit. I installed a tablet in my car but I didn't want to give up satellite radio and a cd player. I bought and installed this Sony knowing that I could control it through my tablet using the Sony "App Remote" Android app. This head unit sounds great and if you can get away with having a small LCD screen I would recommend this unit. The LED lights fade to different colors which looks very cool. The App Remote is a benefit but it does leave a lot to be desired. For instance, when playing songs through USB it will not display album art via ID3 tags or any other means except for downloading from the web. It would also be nice if I could pick my own custom wallpaper instead of the 3 included in the app. The iOS version of the app auto-connects to ipads and iphones when they are used with the cable, but no such luck for the Android app. You have to hit the 'source' button on the head unit to let it know to use the tablet's UI. I have to do this everytime I turn on the car. You'll notice that Sony advertises sound editing capability with the app (setting EQ, balance, and fader) but this is not true for the android version. The head unit itself without the App Remote is hard to use. It takes awhile to cycle through the different sources. For instance if I want to go from CD to Sat Radio, I have to keep pushing the 'source' button like 5 or 6 times. I don't like doing this while driving.

Pros: sounds great; tons of features; App Remote; price

Cons: small display; navigating the UI can be tedious

For the price of this unit it comes with a lot of features. I actually purchased it mainly for the appremote feature. The problem is that appremote only works when hardwired (can't control via bluetooth) and the app is pretty lacking in what you can control. If you are looking for a unit that has a lot of features for the price and don't really care for the appremote feature, this would be a great unit for you. If you need the appremote feature like I do, I would suggest waiting to see if sony comes out with an update.

Pretty good little unit for a single DIN. A lot of people have complained about the screen but if you get this with the plan of using the app remote then it is a much more useful HU. If you plan on letting it stand along and try to read the single line of LED text, you will be frustrated. I am plying my ipad mini through this unit and it works well. My only beef with the app is that I can't get album art to show up on the app remote screen. I switch to the itunes screen and it woks well. it also isn't meant for an ipad mini so the app is a little wonky in this situation but it does work. IF it is running with an iphone or ipod it works great.

Pros: versatile HU, provides a lot of input options. Solid build, Bluetooth works well Wish you could use the sirius port as another aux for a second usb.

Cons: app remote needs an ipad version

When I began searching for a head unit to replace the 3 year old Kenwood Excelon receiver I had, I wasn't sure what to consider. I knew I wanted bluetooth, and if I could change the display color, that would be cool. Of course sound quality is very important as well. I've never had a Sony unit and wasn't sure what to expect, but I have been pleasantly surprised! The remote app feature is very cool. Overall, I have been very happy with the decision to buy. The only thing I miss is the more full sound it seemed like the old Kenwood produced. I may just need to mess with the equalizer more.

I purchased this unit mainly for the AppRemote. I wished to use the AppRemote to connect to my Spotify on my Samsung Galaxy SIII and use the Sony receiver to control the basic functions as seek forward and backward as well as volume and play/pause. For this reason, the MEX-GS600BT works great and I can control my playlist without unlocking my phone every time. The ability for the AppRemote to auto-sync to my phone works fine except I would still have to unlock my phone to switch Apps or change my playlist. I would prefer a larger screen like on the DSX-S310BTX, but this works just fine. One annoyance that I noticed and have not been able to fix is I am unable to view the clock on any other setting except the TUNER. Also, the remote must essentially be directed at the faceplate to work which is another inconvenience. Overall, I like the MEX-GS600BT and serves my purposes better than any other solution I could think of at this time.

Pros: AppRemote works as intended, Multi color screen

Cons: Screen too small, No clock on other modes (except TUNER), Remote reception is weak,

This is a nice deck. I thought for a while before purchasing this stereo. It does not have a drop down door. That would let it have a larger display. The display is also a one-line segmented display. I also own a MEX-BT5700u. That has the drop-down door and a nicer display. The display on this one makes it look like a low-budget model, and there are some cryptic abbreviations in the menus. I know that I am supposed to use a phone or tablet for a display, which I plan to get some time, but the stereo still looks like it does and I don't think that represents Sony very well. I have owned some older Sonys with the ten-button radio presets, and I wish they still made decks with that feature. It was really handy with the CD changer. I do like having the USB port in the back. It is a snap to throw it into the glove box. That is a great place to hold your USB device while you are using or storing it. There are a lot of inputs to scroll through. I like the scrolling through them with the volume knob. I am still reading the manual, so there are probably more features that I will like about it. I have some complaints, but this is a nice stereo, and if you can put up with the display, I recommend it.

Pros: Three Pair of 5-Volt Pre-Amp Outputs RDS Bluetooth Capability Adjustable-Color Display

Cons: One-Line Segmented Display No Drop Down Door If a USB device is connected, the stereo will turn on and switch to the USB port automatically. Even when you were not going to turn on the radio.

It has proven to be a very good receiver. I take advantage of the Tuner, Satellite, and Blue Tooth Phone capabilities currently. I had to read the manual before I could get the bluetooth working but that was easy enough once I had. There are several feaures I still need to read up on but I am very happy with the unit - everything performs well, but the size of the radio limits the display options.

Pros: Good sound Good support of Sirius Good BlueTooth support Display adjustable to match dash etc. making it less obvious it is aftermarket

Cons: Installers couldn't get the steering wheel controls working I haven't figured out voice dialing yet - but believe it will work

My first purchase from Crutchfield as a DIY project. I was very pleased with the ease and support of the installation. The Sony MEX-GS600BT is loaded with features, some I won't use but are there if I change my mind. The first thing I noticed after the installation was the substantial increase in reception over the factory radio. I'm very pleased with the purchase as well as the support from Crutchfield.

The music sounds great, the blue tooth phone sound and mic is outstanding. The only two problems I have is 1. making a call using the head unit, I use the phone to call, and 2. the ipod control is impossible to figure out and use. The directions are almost worthless. It does allow you to switch to passenger mode which means you can control the ipod from the ipod. This is what I have had to resort to.

Pros: Excellent sound Excellent blue tooth phone (both mic and speaker) Easy to control ipod from the ipod

Cons: Very Poor instruction manual difficult to control ipod from dash unit

I was lucky to get this unit on a sale, so It was a steal at just under $200. The sound quality is great, the fit and finish of the deck is top notch. I was looking for an Android compatible unit and it is working very well. I have a moderate sound system in my vehicle, 4 mids and tweets, one 8 inch Sub and one Rockford amp. I do have a good amount of experience with installs and this is a good head unit for sound quality. I definitely recommend this to anyone.

Pros: sound quality, Android compatible, good looks, 7 band Eq, all of the tech features

After long research finding a replacement HU for my Mustang, I went with this Sony. Plenty of pre-amps and watts. USB, AUX, Bluetooth, etc... Used with the Ford harness supplied by Crutchfield to utilize factory amps. The only question I had was where the amps drew power from, called support and we figured out the the wire labeled with a tag is the low voltage 'power' that gives the amps what they need to turn on. Overall pleased with my purchase, now I just need to find replacement for all the speakers for my Mach audio before I blow them with too many watts.

    Pros: Pre-amps, USB, AUX...

    Cons:

    Great buy, love the features

Absolutely love the deck. Was looking for something that had bluetooth, ISB, Pandora, Auxillary In, and not a touch screen for simplicity. This product performs great and fulfills all of that and then some. Worked great with my PAC steering wheel integration. Extremely happy with it and would recommend it to others. Also for first time Crutchfield buyers like I was, Crutchfield tech support is Awesome. I spoke with D.J. and he was hands down the most knowledgeable mobile electronics guy I had ever spoke too.

Pros: Retained my steering wheel controls, smooth install, great price, Crutchfield tech support

Ordered this stereo last week and got it today (Christmas Eve). With the kit and the wire harness, it was a super easy and straight forward install. The entire install took about 2.5 hours. It wasn't bad at all. This stereo is installed in a 92 Caprice and the hardest part was finding all the little screws securing the dash panels. First thing I did before adjusting any sound settings was pair the stereo to my iPhone. Absolutely simple and it was picked up immediately. I turned the key off and on several times to make sure the auto-pairing worked and it didn't hesitate or fail once. I walked away from the car with the phone until it last pairing a few times and it picked it right back up as soon as I came back in range. I made a phone call and asked the person how I sounded while I was sitting back as if I was driving and they said I sound clear as normal. I put in a cd and even with un-amplified Infinity Reference 6x4's and stock 6x9's, the sound quality was pretty much perfect (amps, subs and new 6x9's are on my wish list). Radio sound quality is excellent. The menu is pretty straight forward and simple and when I couldn't figure something out on my own, the manual is clear and understandable. I'd recommend this to a friend.

    Pros: Sound, Cost, Bluetooth ease...

    Cons: None so far.

Just received this new Sony(thanks Crutchfield for the fast shipping) and installed in my 94 Bronco yesterday. I had a touch screen Pioneer Avic-D3 unit in my last truck and I loved it, so I chose the MEX-GS600BT as a new stereo for my Bronco, and its the next best thing to a double din touch screen as you can use your phone to contol it. Installation was a breeze and after downloading the app for my Droid Razr M setup and pairing was fast and simple. I can control the stereo from the phone, change radio stations, select source, view and skip tracks playing on my ipod, stream music from my phone, listen to Pandora, and more. The sound is great although I am still waiting for my amp to hook up a sub, and there are alot of options like HPF, and LPF. All in all a great stereo with tons of bells and whistles, and the fact that it works great with Android phones was the big seller for me. Only thing I wish it had was HD radio, but I chose this over a Pioneer with HD and 100% glad I went with the Sony.

Pros: Sounds is great Bluetooth phone and music steaming Works great with my Droid Razr M Phone app makes this single din work like a double din touch screen

    Cons: No HD radio

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Sony MEX-GS600BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1 + EDR), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Pairing: Up to 9 phones or audio devices can be registered with the MEX-GS600BT (only one device can be used at a time). The unit can be set to automatically reconnect to the last connected Bluetooth device when the ignition is turned on. Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony MEX-GS600BT. Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

External Microphone: The MEX-GS600BT includes an external microphone to carry on your side of your phone conversation and voice command dialing. The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 12' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone comes with a mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.465" (diameter) x 1.425" (depth). There is no integrated front-panel mic.

Hands-Free Communication: The Sony MEX-GS600BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone. Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The controls of the MEX-GS600BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the MEX-GS600BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways.
      • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's control dial.
      • Redial: Use to easily redial the last number you called.
      • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the unit's phone book. Up to a 40 character name can be input for each contact.
      • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
      • Voice Dial: You can make a call using the voice tags stored on your connected cellular phone.

SMS Indicator: The SMS indicator informs you of any incoming or unread SMS messages on your paired Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. You will still need to view the text message from your phone, as well as create and send text messages from your phone.

Wireless Audio Streaming (with Meta Data Display): The Sony MEX-GS600BT also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The MEX-GS600BT will be able to control your stored music's basic playback functions; such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, Fast-Forward/Reverse, and Shuffle/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name, Song title, and Album label. The MEX-GS600BT also supports audio streaming of music apps (control and metadata display depends on music app). When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Volume Adjustment: You can adjust the volume level of your paired Bluetooth audio device from -8 to +18dB to match volume level output of other sources.

    USB/iPod/Aux Integration

USB Port: The receiver's rear-panel USB type-A port (attached to rear-chassis by a 59" cable) can be used for plugging in a (MSC) Mass Storage Class USB device; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable digital audio players, or USB thumbdrives. The head unit can play music files stored on the USB device in MP3, WMA, or AAC formats (up to 320 kbps). The head unit can recognize up to 10,000 music files on a single USB Mass Storage Device. The MEX-GS600BT offers the following USB search, playback, and display functions.

    • Search Modes:
      • Quick-BrowZer: allows you to search for a track on a connected USB device easily by category (Genre, Artist, Album, or Playlist)
      • Jump Mode: gets you closer to the song you want by allowing you to fast forward through a music category in 10% increments
      • Zappin: play music (files or folders) in 6, 15, or 30-second clips until you find the song you are looking for on your connected USB device
    • Playback Modes:
      • Repeat: repeat a single track or repeat an entire album
      • Random: shuffle all tracks or a specific album
    • Display Information:
      • Numeric Text: track number and elapsed playing time
      • Alphanumeric Text: song title, artist name, and album label

Note: This unit cannot recognize USB devices via a USB hub. Not all MP3, WMA, AAC files may playback due to file variations. Copyright protected ACC-LC files cannot be played back.

USB 1-Wire iPod/iPhone Control: The MEX-GS600BT's rear-panel USB port allows you to connect your iPod/iPhone via the included iPod dock or Lightning connector-to-USB cable that comes with your iPod or iPhone (not included with the head unit). This USB 1-Wire for iPod/iPhone connection lets you directly connect, charge, & control select iPod/iPhones via the USB jack on the front of the unit, as well as view metadata like song title & artist name on the front display.

    • Bypass iPod DAC: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 1-bit D/A converter (bypassing iPod/iPhone DAC), allowing for a Signal-to-Noise ratio up to 120dB.
    • Music Navigation: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen. The Quick-BrowZer feature allows you to browse your iPod/iPhone's music library by Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Playlist, or Podcast from the head unit. You can search within a specific Quick-BrowZer category or All tracks alphabetically (A-Z). With the head unit's Zappin feature, you can play music tracks & albums in 6, 15, or 30-second clips until you find the song you are looking for on your connected iPod/iPhone. The unit also offers Repeat (Track/Album) & Shuffle (Album) playback modes for iPod/iPhone.
    • Information Display: The head unit will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information, including - Track #, Elapsed playing time, Song title, Artist name, and Album label.
