Smartphone synchronization

Sony's MEX-GS810BH CD receiver puts your smartphone's capabilities on tap when you're behind the wheel. Sony's App Remote™ feature lets you put select music apps into a single list that you can control with the receiver or your phone — you can call up apps by touching the receiver's controls or control receiver functions with your smartphone's screen.

And with select Android™ devices, you can control sources and respond to texts or emails with voice control. You can also communicate with Siri through this receiver, including music search and other voice commands. Just pair your iPhone® to the receiver with Bluetooth®, press a button, and ask your question — you'll hear the response over your car's speakers.

Sony MEX-GS810BH

Sony's MEX-GS810BH lets you enjoy the great sound of HD Radio stations.

Bluetooth for hands-free calling (and more)

Bluetooth offers convenience when you're behind the wheel, with hands-free calling and wireless audio streaming from your mobile device. The MEX-GS810BH will also connect to two devices at the same time — great if you have work and personal mobile accounts. Pairing is easy with Sony's Simple Secure Pairing system, and even easier if your phone supports Near Field Communications (NFC) technology — just touch your device to the receiver and you're set.

The best sound in radio

HD Radio

The MEX-GS810BH boasts an integrated HD Radio™ tuner. When you tune into a station broadcasting an HD Radio signal, you'll enjoy near CD-quality FM broadcasts and AM that doesn't suffer from tinny sound and static. And HD Radio offers some other pretty cool features, like iTunes® Tagging — it lets you save songs you hear for later purchase when your iPhone is plugged in to the stereo's USB port.

This Sony also plays CDs, and features dual USB inputs that let you connect both an iPod® or iPhone and a thumb drive. Sony's Quick-BrowZer search tool makes finding the right playlist, album, artist, or song an easy task. If you're a fan of streaming music, you'll have total access to your Pandora® account with your iPhone, Android, or Blackberry.

And you can reach for the stars by adding a SiriusXM satellite radio tuner (not included, requires subscription). Satellite radio offers an unparalleled variety of music, news, sports, and talk, plus your favorite channels will stay with you wherever you drive.

Tune it up

Sony's Digital Reality Amp puts out some serious power to your speakers, and you can tweak that output with an impressive array of sound-shaping tools, including a 10-band EQ, time alignment, and comprehensive frequency filters. Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) improves the sound of compressed music. Three sets of 5-volt preamp outputs send a high-powered, low-noise signal to your external amps. Sony covers this versatile car stereo with a 3-year warranty.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Overall the unit is fine. Tech support was great. I would like the clock to be displayed while other functions were being used, but I guess you can't have everything.

After my factory installed in-dash unit failed, I chose this unit as the replacement. It gave me back most of what I lost from the original unit. However, switching between modes is far from intuitive. Pressing the source button (repeatedly) gives the user a one-way scroll through the various modes. Using the Sony App on a smartphone gets you directly to the right mode, but that's not a great (or safe) option while driving. Finding non-preset satellite radio stations is also a bit of a chore, also best not done while driving. I've found that the sound quality from this unit (without replacing my factory speakers) is a bit improved over the stock unit. Bluetooth phone call quality is very good, vastly improved over the factory Bluetooth. Supposedly, this unit has the capability to read (aloud) incoming text messages, but I haven't found out how to do that. I've occasionally heard a very faint announcement of who the incoming text was from.

Pros: Good sound quality. Nice appearance. Excellent Bluetooth phone sound quality.

Cons: Changing modes is cumbersome. Finding non-preset Satellite stations is very cumbersome.

I have an older Sony HU that I have had a great experience with. I have not had a hiccup with it. This new HU from Sony is the polar opposite. I have had it for a month now. First issue I have is it's menu interface is clunky. Its great having all of these features but their manual is lacking so I spent some time figuring things out. Then I ran into a problem with all of its 'sources'. Most factory HUs will only give a source as an option if there is media connected to it. So if I want to change sources I have to scan through sources that are not in use (some I will never use.) There is no option to disable those sources that I know of. Using the Pandora app requires that I press the pause button once it is connected. Again not a feature that I have seen on an OEM HU. That step adds clunkiness to the interface. The worst part so far is that HU randomly reset itself. I soldered and shrink tubing all of my connections. I would have suspected my work if not for the HU scrolling through the demo screens and colors at a very fast rate. I have since reprogrammed my custom color and it has defaulted to another color.

    Pros: Sounds good

Cons: Clunky interface, sources that don't hide when no media present, thin manual and possible electronic issue.

This radio is great. Good looks, great sound, and lots of useful features. I replaced the factory radio in my truck with this Sony model. The Bluetooth connectivity is great for hands-free phone operation. The combination of 2 USB inputs for dongles or Ipods and the CD changer provide many options for music playback. The display can be color coded to match your interior ambience.

Pros: Bluetooth USB inputs CD player Aux Audio connections (Frt/Rear/Subwoofer) Configurable color display Good power / sound

Cons: Display controls allow you to dim the display ... but it still seems too bright for me.. it doesn't dim with car dash dimmer switch. USB thumb drives are tricky...by the book, you should turn the unit off and remove any dongle before turning the engine on or off.. other wise you may corrupt the drive... I had trouble with an 8GB drive losing connection or being corrupted. I tested a 2 GB drive and it works great no matter how I treat it. (I leave it in all the time through startup/shu

I bought this unit after reading 'stellar' reviews here @ Crutchfield, and elsewhere. I received the unit. Nice enough box. Unboxed, decent construction. Installed easily enough. Turned it on ... & that's when the problems began with this P.O.C.! Display kept flipping out, demo mode randomly turns on/off, USB flash drive navigation is random-order. Audio distort even @ moderate volumes. ( this is an external amp setup. My amps are fine.) And the "AppRemote" Android app. Srsly?! Can't actually Do anything with it. Get That off my phone ... Called great-as-usual Crutchfield support, got pointed to Sony support. Yikes! After voice-mail trees, I finally get to a human(oid). Clrly, trained by Mircosoft -- all they can suggest is "Reset the unit", unable to grok that the Fourth time isn't going to work any better than the prior 3 times with no effect. I tried to 'escalate' from these clownss to Sony 'Executive' customer support. Here's a shocker!! -- more shenanigans. I had enough. Crap product & worse service! *NOW* I remember why I haven't bought a Sony product in years!! Thank goodness for Crutchfield. Call CustSvc, get an RA - no questions asked. Rip the deck out & ship it back to Crutchfield. It's gone !! I traded up to a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X998. 2 days later, it's installed, and -- other than Lousy glare/contrast -- it's a great audio product. So far

Pros: It didn't blow up and burn the car to ashes.

Cons: It arrived in the first place.

Love Sony radios! This is the updated version of the last one I had in my previous truck and the quality is great! I love everything except I can't get it to auto-sync to my phone's Bluetooth when I start the truck up like the older model. All has to be done on the phone and the radio in unison every time. The colors and quality as well as options with this radio are stellar! Would always recommend Sony!

Pros: variety, quality, hardiness, and pretty much almost everything.

Cons: Refuses to auto-sync to the Bluetooth of my phone like previous models could.

Works Great and the HD quality continues to blow me away. The 10 band eq gives me the exact sound that works best for my hearing issues and the multiple usb ports allows me to have a massive amount of music ready to go at anytime. The Bluetooth was easy and the phone hookup sounds great.

Pros: Easy install, easy use controls, 10 band EQ, multi USB ports, easy phone use

Cons: Android app does not have BT audio choice from your phone and does not allow you to access thru the radio on controls when it is active, I tried it and uninstalled on my Samsung Note 3

I just replaced my head unit with this one. I had Sirius connected to an AUX on the stock head unit but was tired of all the extra wires. For this unit I also purchased the SiriusXM add on. Its a good thing since the HD radio is a joke and since you can't turn it off it essentially ruins the regular radio as well. The Sound when playing from satellite or off of the iPhone via USB is excellent. The sound over BT is very good as well but you can tell the difference. I like the app and that the iPhone paired when plugged into the USB. It would be nice if you could add other apps inside the Sony app. I prefer Waze to Apple maps and if you use maps within the app it is the only thing you hear. If you want directions and music your only option is to use BT audio and then the directions interrupt the music.

Pros: iPhone integration and app are nice, bluetooth call quality, sound quality and controls

    Cons: Radio is BAD.

I replaced the factory radio in my f250 with this one and I love it. I have never installed a radio in a vehicle and dont know anything much about them (this is more a guy thing lol) This came with instructions on how to do it and I called a couple times to make sure I was doing it right. I had no problems putting it in and it worked on the first try! I didnt blow anything up and it sounds great. I am very pleased with the quality of the radio and with the great assistance I got from the people at Crutchfield. I will definitely recommend anyone to use Crutchfield for car stereos.

Pros: No problems. Everything was perfect!

Great product for a great price. I wanted two USB inputs as well as HD radio capability. It was hard to find a receiver that met both requirements with good write ups. I've always had alpine and kenwood, but gre tired of my kenwood. The alpine choices were so what limited for single DIN. So far I like this receiver and was amazed how quickly I received it from Crutchfield.

Pros: 2 USB inputs, HD radio and tag feature. Multi color display.

Cons: I wish the display foul show song tag info and the clock at the same time.

This receiver has exceeded my expectations. I replaced the factory unit (with 6 CD changer built in) in a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid that my son uses. I wanted a unit that had Bluetooth streaming as well as HD Radio. The sound quality is great to spectacular with the factory speakers, after you set the sound to your preference. I used the factory presets for that, but it gives you the option to shape the sound any way you like. (You do need to select the sound for each input separately, which was easy to do. I set the sound for the FM and it only took a minute to figure out why the music streaming from my iPhone did not sound as good). The FM reception is so much better than anything I have ever heard. In fact, I did not realize that there were so many stations in my area. The existing factory radios on any vehicle that my family drives does not come close to this unit. It only took me a minute to figure out how the HD radio works, and if I can anyone can. I was delighted that when I had my Google GPS running and streaming audio at the same time from my iPhone that the music volume would automatically dim when the GPS was giving me directions. I have not made any hands free phone calls as yet, but I imagine that it works the same way. I am probably going to put this unit in my old 1996 Toyota Celica Convertible also.

Pros: Great Sound with factory speakers and enough power for most people, I would think. The FM reception is the best I have ever heard. Blue Tooth streaming is great, and CD sounds great as expected. The factory setting on the color is to continually change......my 16 year old thinks that is pretty cool, but you can set it to anything. The installation was fairly straightforward. Again, if I could do it, pretty much most people who contemplate doing it can.

Cons: If I had one wish, it would be for bigger control "buttons". My old Ford Escape just bounces down the road and I found that by resting a few fingers in the pocket below the unit, I can keep a finger on the "next station seek button". The plastic installation bracket was adequate and worked. It took a little time with the instructions and talking to a Crutchfield tech to understand the install.

Pros: The sound system is great!!! Has everything you would want in a radio and it fits in my 1993 benz 190e like a glove (it looks like it was made just for it.) Great for converting and updating to cd with iphone/ipad ...I am enjoying my radio so much I don't want to leave my car.

Cons: This product is not completely hands free. You need to assist/start your calls prior too. When installing your iphone/ipad make sure it is connected properly for incoming & outcoming calls with contacts and or etc...prior to your departure from the installation shop.

Because my 350z did not have the original head unit the directions to hook up the electrical parts just didn't fit. so for $70 I had a professional installer put it in cooking about 30 minutes and he did an excellent job. In all the years that I have lived here I have never been able to receive FM channels clearly there was always lots of static. But with this head unit the HD stations come in clear as a bell I drove through narrow valleys coming back from the installation never heard one pop hits crackle nothing just beautiful music. Comparatively speaking my music is now gorgeous no static just pure music. The Pandora app works great. Tomorrow I'll play with all of the different equalization settings and see how much I can improve the sound.

Pros: HD Radio tremendous Pandora app works great and probably lots of other things I haven't discovered yet

Saw some reviews that had this at the top, and with an ailing stock receiver, I figured I'd give it a shot. I wanted to replace the stock Blaupunkt radio in my 1995 Mercedes E320. wow, what a difference this unit makes with the existing speakers. with digital HD tuning and 55 watts the existing speakers sound 300% better. the unit fits perfectly into the stock dashboard. I did have the local MB dealer do the work since i didnt have the time to do it myself. there were also no instructions included in the box from Crutchfield. the unit includes an excellent bluetooth mic and easily connects with our iphones. CD's sound great and the Pandora connection is a great benefit. and there is an app to download where you or the passenger can control all the features of the unit from their phone. its even easier from the phone than the unit itself. the display is clear all the time. bc this vehicle is a convertible I wanted it to be seen with the top down and it is very visible. the USB feature allows you to connect to an iphone to play Ipod music. for Android users the connection is wireless. but either way the quality of sound is fantastic. and the BT connection works very well. callers can hear very clearly. the volume will decrease when a call comes in. Our E320 has been transferred from the dark ages to the current by this Sony unit. I would highly recommend it as a quality and full featured upgrade to a stock radio.

Pros: lots of features, sounds fantastic, eliminates the need for new speakers, love the App.

Cons: no instructions came with the unit. remote CD changers will no longer work, lots of commands to learn. read the user guide.

Takes a little homework to get this unit up and running. A lot of features, but a nice unit. All the bells and whistles, but be ready to spend some time on the setup once it's installed.

Pros: Easy to install. Sound quality. Features.

Cons: None but takes time to understand and get dialed in.

I was able to use the NFC tag in the volume knob to pair my android phone. Coolest way to connect to a stereo I have ever seen. It works great with my bluetooth audio and it shuffles all the songs on my USB thumb drive perfectly and it able to display the tags on screen to show song title, artist, album etc. My old stock in-dash never did that and it was really frustrating.

Pros: NFC pairing for Android, two USB inputs and good controls for listening to your personal library.

Cons: Could have probably spent less money if I had gone without a CD player.

Install was simple. I am color blind so I always have to get someone with "normal" eyes to help match up the wires. Normal operation is pretty straightforward right out of the box. The menu isn't the most intuitive thing to navigate but with a little patience and a couple of calls to Crutchfield you can figure it out without reaching for a hammer. Still figuring out the sound settings.

Pros: Perfect fit for my Wrangler.

Cons: Wish it would auto scroll between artist and song title but you have to pick which one you want to see....which is kind of a bummer on XM.

Does the job for me. I was looking for: HD tuner Clock display Bluetooth phone and streaming Front & back USB At least one control knob Station select buttons Dimmable panel at night Operator manual is a little lax, but I figured out the operations. Audio is excellent all the way to max volume, without distortion. Clock display is excellent, large enough to read. I like the display options, I use bright amber/yellow during the day, dark red at night. The Call button is glaringly bright- I put tape over it. The station select buttons are black in a black background, no contrast. I'll paint 'em white. Phone connection works great, streaming functions, usb, etc., all work great. Happy to see: rotary knob encloses the push button Enter button, but won't activate it. No worry about pushing on the rotary knob and activating the center button by mistake.

    Pros: (as described)

Cons: Bright Call button a distraction Station select buttons hard to locate while driving Easy to push adjacent buttons while tuning radio, end up changing Source instead.

This model does it all it takes a few minutes to figure out all the goodies but after that it is awesome. For me there is no comparison. Sony will always be my go to stereo. The durability is very good I use these stereos on my Harley. Great Great Great is all I can say

This was to replace my stock Head Unit in my 2009 Honda S2000. I wanted the thing to fit, work well with dash controls, and match the color of the cars display. I got it all. I did use a Modifry (specific to S2000) harness and DCI control to interface with the car seamlessly. I used Posi-tap and Posi-lock for the connections. Connected the 'speed' wire for variable volume control. It all went together as advertised. I did not have to solder or cut wires to fit. The S2000 has a snug opening but it all went it. I used the old stock head unit's side brackets on the new Sony so the fit and installation was perfect. I downloaded the Sony app on my Note 4 (T-Mobile) and linked it according to directions. That was it. Worked perfectly the first time. With the S2000 the Head unit is hidden most of the time behind a console door but that is what I want as the dash controls work as well as it interfaces with the Note 4. I leave the Sony on all the time. When I start the car, the Sony connects with the Note 4 bringing up the menu or last played song (paused even with Pandora). I just hit the play on the phone and away I go. The Note has an easy menu for the radio, CD, or whatever. You can add any app (Spotify, Pandora, etc) that is on your mobile and kick it over to the Sony app in include in the play menu. Slick. Hands free phone is great, good mic pickup and sound, even with the convertible top down. The sound is very good, makes the stock speakers come alive. Very pleased with it

Pros: Ease of installation and use. Pretty much automatic. No bugs. Great sound. Lots of sound control/audio options. Nice app.

    Cons: None discovered.

I have had this deck for about 5 months. The sound quality depends on how you shape it.This unit has more features than will be used by me. This is by far the best car stereo that Sony has put out. The HD radio is big on sound if you dial it in. You really should read the instructions to really get the best sound. Play around with untill it sounds right. This unit took longer to learn but it was worth it. Hooks up to my phone and tablet with no problems.

Pros: Great color options, great sounds.

My only complaint about this radio is the slightly high price. However, I recommend it even with the price premium as Sony has a good track record and Crutchfield's customer service is unbeatable. I was concerned about some of the complaints about functionality noted in other reviews, but at least on my unit there were no issues. One review mentioned that the head unit does not support RDS. On mine you simply have to cycle through display options if you want RDS info to display by default. Another reviewer complained that you have to cycle through inputs by pressing the source button repeatedly. I thought this was the case but found that you can press source once and then use the volume dial to cycle through inputs more quickly. Additionally, using the same display changing button as for the RDS, you can force the clock to display even when music is playing. While the menu interface is complex at first, I found it to be an efficient organization structure once I actually read the manual. Installation for my particular vehicle had a few odd points which I got hung up on (required additional filter and running 12v power wire), but overall was pretty straightforward. The included documentation is good and my wiring harness was color coded which I hadn't anticipated. In conclusion: Read The Manual if you think a feature does not exist.

Pros: -Vastly improved audio quality, even with same OEM speakers -Variable color illumination is nice to match car interior -Seek function is extremely fast to jump from station to station -HD Radio is a huge improvement over FM

Cons: -Would prefer longer wiring harness -You are likely to need to spend some time with the manual to understand the functionality

I assembled it without any issues. The wiring harness from Crutchfield makes the installation so easy. I spent some extra time running the microphone wire and the rear USB cable so they were nicely concealed. Took it on a long road trip this weekend and tried all of the features. I love all of the different ways to connect to the radio with phones or mp3 players. I still need to figure more for the bluetooth connection. It connected via bluetooth to my phone immediately after pairing with NFC. The sound quality was perfect and it was great being able to control Pandora and phone calls through the radio. But I ran into some other strange issues with my phone. I have some prototype software that might not work well with the radio. I'll try with a production phone and software to verify that it all works well.

Pros: Every connection method ever wanted (bluetooth, auxilary, usb front and rear).

Cons: Takes time to learn the controls and features.

Replaced another, older Sony head unit, so no surprises. Could have used a little more wire on the harness. Only glitch was when I plugged the mike into the wired remote plug in the rear of the unit by accident and it put it in some type of rolling demo mode that wouldn't play. After I figured out what I did wrong & unplugged it, the unit worked like a charm. Some of the other reviews had issues with the I-Phone, I had no connectivity issues at all. After the initial connect, it auto-connects every time I get in the car.

Pros: Nice system power bluetooth connectivity

I needed a new head unit for my 2006 LJ, one that would play mp3 and wma files and supported USB external devices; and one that would support hands-free telephony. Only a few had both a rear and front USB port, so I selected Sony based upon it's long history of providing personal tunes. The sound quality is excellent and it utilizes the sub-woofer already in the Jeep. The ease of use gets a lower rating because the buttons are so small. That's the trend in head units these days, but it makes it almost impossible to hit the right button whilst the Jeep is moving. It would have been lower, except for the fact that the unit comes with a remote that has larger buttons. Coolness factor - who cares? Build quality is good, but the means of attaching the head unit to the mounting 'cage' is lame (bend some tabs) and doesn't work very well. Finally, the instructions were very good, but neglected to mention that the microphone plus into the back; something nice to know while installing it.

Pros: Great sound, plays all of my tunes, supports USB with both a front and rear port, easy to pair with my phone, and has a detachable faceplate. I would buy it again. The stuff Crutchfield includes for installation is perfec.

Cons: Setting all of the options for this unit takes some time and study. Also, the menu structure and selection process is very confusing.

The MEX-GS810BH is superb. I purchased this unit to replace the OEM radio in my 2001 Yukon as it was highly ranked (at or near the top) in all user and blog reviews. I was blown away by the sound and ease of use. My iPhone 4S links immediately upon entering my vehicle and the pairing was super easy. The manual is very straight forward and easy to follow. I had a problem with the display changing colors and various key words appearing but realized it had to be in Demo mode. Quickly checked the manual found solution and turned off Demo mode. The sound is superb. I knew it was there, but until now never really heard my subwoofer. My Coldplay Ghost Stories store CD sounds amazing and burned CD sounds almost as good. My SiriusXM talk and music don't play nearly as well but that is most likely the nature of the signal. I have a Sirius stand-alone unit and do not take advantage of the SiriusXM internal capabilities of the MEX. I am hopeful that if I connect the Sirius receiver through the AUX input the sound will be better. Furthermore, I am not using the equalizer at all. The SONY preset sound settings are wonderful. I made and received calls the day I installed the unit. Answering a call is one button away as is hanging up. The voice recognition works very well when requesting a name on your phone to call. Sound quality of speech for the phone is top notch. may buy another unit for my 2002 Saab. This was my third Crutchfield install and not my last. High recommend.

This replaced the stock radio in a crown vic police interceptor. Installation was pretty straightforward, it took me two calls and two online videos to get it in place properly the first time. Lots of adjustable settings in this one. It allowed me to set the back pair of 6x9s up like a subwoofer and to fill in the slope with the new 5x7s up front. Power was used efficiently. Streaming music over bluetooth was great, the wider bandwidth in the newer version of bluetooth sounded great. jetAudio Plus for Android has the Bongiovi DSP available, I have been waiting a couple years for this to come out. With the combination of settings available I was able to make Death Magnetic sound awesome. I'm new to using bluetooth so it's taking a little getting used to. That's the reason for the three star Ease of Use. It's probably just that I haven't figured it out yet. I still don't know how to print from my phone, either. That said, I sat in a parking lot with the manual and got the sound configured the way I like it in about 20 minutes using more settings than I have ever seen on a car or home stereo before. The display is super-cheesy bling in this shifting rainbow color scheme. Fortunately, there is a way to pick a color. It allows you to set one color for day (such as bright blue/white) and another at night (dark red, for example) so you don't ruin your night vision.

Pros: They're packing a lot of computer power in this rig. It complements the capabilities of a phone very nicely. I see that there are navigator receivers with a touchscreen that play DVDs... but that can all be replaced by your phone today. I suppose there are things this head unit doesn't do, but I don't really care. It meets the 80/20 rule and then some. The price is right for me. It's very expandable with the 5V outputs. I am completely satisfied with the sound quality and features.

Cons: Supposedly it has a CD player in it.

1 star review because Mapping Apps don't interface correctly. 1995 Honda Accord EX Samsung Note 3 Android 4.4.2 The Good: -Sound quality very good even with factory speakers -Sony App works OK Tell the Sony App which phone apps to 'control' then apps you've chosen show up with their own icons Touch an Icon to switch to that app -Radio preset buttons YEAH! -Visible in bright sunlight -Keyboard on Note 3 still works when connected -Crutchfield tech support has been great and spent a lot of time with me on Saturday after Christmas on trying to get the system to work properly. -Phone can be used to drive receiver -Cell interrupts car speakers The Bad: -Unit *looks* like some outer-space transformer Not a refined look -Can't get the color to match exactly with the color of the Honda's blue/green/whitish clock -Phone does not automatically re-connect after installing the Sony App I have to push the volume knob each time to get it to connect -Menus and menus and menus Baffling array of messing around to get at features DO NOT recommend trying to change Equalizer/Fader/Balance while driving The UGLY -Map apps do NOT interrupt the Tuner to give turn by turn directions My top requirements of a Bluetooth receiver: 1-Good Sound 2-Hands Free cellphone interrupts car speakers 3-Mapping App directions interrupts car speakers 4-Stream phone music to receiver 5-Drive receiver from phone Bottom Line If I can't get mapping apps to interrupt speakers the unit is going back

Pros: Good Sound Hands Free cellphone works Streams music from phone to receiver Drive the receiver from your mobile

Cons: Mapping apps don't interrupt the car speakers Buried Equalizer/Fader/Balance make changing settings while driving impossible (This can be set in the Remote App under Tuner more easily than via the receiver)

    Highly recommended

For audio upgrade project I needed and advanced head unit that allows for the radio to be controlled by my Google Nexus 7. I also wanted to be able to use my phone at the same time. Replacing my head unit in my 2004 VW R32 is years in the making. I was able to install the head unit in the glove box and using the PAC interface connect to my stock amp and speakers. The radio sounds great. The app remote software allows me to control the radio, Pandora etc. The added bonus is the ability to also have a voice profile just for my phone allowing me to download my phone book and use voice commands to dial calls. It takes some time to understand the controls and program the unit but once you do, you will have a smile ear to ear.

Pros: DSP allows to configure the unit for the best listening experience. Two USB ports allowed to connect my tablet and USB flash drive. The app remote software allows for added controls as I am using my tablet as the head unit to drive the radio. Easily expand to add a subwoofer and additional equipment via the rca jacks in the rear. The radio comes w a microphone.

Cons: A bit hard to configure all the settings via the radio, the app. Remote does not allow you to program all the featurea , you still need to do some tasks through the head unit.

I was upgrading from a previous Sony car stereo because I wanted to add Bluetooth capabilities, handsfree, and HD Radio plus XM satellite to my car. This radio absolutely fits the bill and was an awesome improvement to my sound system in my car. HD Radio sensitivity is really good with this radio, plus it has more station memory capabilities in that it allows you to save secondary HD stations. The color spectrum available is amazing! You can pretty much make your color anything you want. The controls will take some getting used to since many of the menus are layered. Once you get the hang of it, things will go much easier. The sound quality is exceptional and offers more control than previous models. This unit really does it all: Radio, XM, CD, Bluetooth, and 2 USB connections! It can access your phone and play music from Pandora or off of your playlist. For the price, this radio does give you great bang for the buck! I highly recommend it!

Pros: Great sound and the radio covers everything: CD, HD Radio, XM, USB, Bluetooth

Cons: Layered menus can be a little confusing and will take some practice

Great sound and features. I wanted all the features this supplies. I usually like 2 DIN units and although my 98 F150 looks like it can take a 2 Din unit there is not enough room over the top to install a 2 DIN. I chose this unit between this and a Kenwood. I chose this unit because it had a better equalizer. My other main concerns were HD Radio, BT, frond USB, front Aux Jack, and possible future expansion to XM.

Pros: Meets or exceeds most of my needs. Was easy to install and the things that Crutchfield sends with them make it look professionally installed. It took me less than an hour to install and if you take away the time I spent connecting the wires to the jacks in the dash and running the microphone cabling it would have taken me about 5 minutes to completely install.

Cons: One complaint is that the setup menu seems a bit difficult to navigate and some of the main menu items seem a bit ambiguous. My only other complaint is that Crutchfield might provide a bit better overview of how to connect the power and speaker connections . It took me a while to realize that the single main connection into the old stereo actually split into two connection kind of hidden from view. So it might just be a case of me bad.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Sony MEX-GS810BH is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 3.0), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony MEX-GS810BH. Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Simple Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony MEX-GS810BH without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. You can register up to nine Bluetooth enabled devices with the Sony head unit and keep two devices connected at all times (only one can be used at a time). Once paired, the MEX-GS810BH will automatically re-connect to your device when in close proximity. The head unit also offers unique pairing for Android and iPhone smartphone to make Bluetooth pairing even easier.

    • Near Field Communication (for Android): Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the head unit's NFC tag on it rotary-knob. For older Android smartphones with OS 4.0 or lower, download the NFC Easy Connect app from Google Play to use the head unit's NFC pairing function.
    • USB Pairing (for iPhone): You can pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Sony head unit via USB and activating the Bluetooth function on your Apple device.

Hands-Free Communication w/ External Mic: The Sony MEX-GS810BH supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The controls of the MEX-GS810BH can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. And thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the MEX-N600BH provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the MEX-GS810BH, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways.
      • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's control dial.
      • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the unit's phone book. Up to a 40 character name can be input for each contact.
      • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
      • Voice Dial: You can make a call using the voice tags stored on your connected cellular phone.
      • Redial: Use to easily redial the last number you called.
Note: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 11' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone comes with a mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.515" (depth).

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Sony MEX-GS810BH can stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat) for both stored music and music apps, the MEX-GS810BH provides a Search List of your stored music by Category or Playlist (AVRCP 1.4 phones only; which includes Android 4.0+ and iPhone 5.0+). The head unit will also display device's stored music and music app song information; such as Artist name & Song/Album title.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth (not USB), the Sony MEX-GS810BH has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel control and external microphone. Simply activate the "voice dial" function on the MEX-GS810BH to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the MEX-GS810BH ; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

    Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit supports the playback of MP3/WMA music files on a CD-R or CD-RW disc.

Basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track are still available from the head unit. The Passenger App Control mode does not offer song/artist information display. Not all apps will be compatible with this mode.
Note: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone (not iPad). If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then this unit will not recognize it.

    • Preset Tuning: The radio features 6 memory bands to store and receive analog and digital AM/FM stations. You can store up to 6 presets each in FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1 and AM2 (total: 18 FM/12 AM). Preset tuning can be done manually or automatically.
      • Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the best signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency. You can select from FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
      • Manual Tuning: You can manually tune and find your favorite radio stations one by one for FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
    • iTunes Tagging: The iTunes Tag button on this unit allows you to tag songs (up to 50) you like that are broadcast by HD Radio stations. Information about these tagged songs is stored by the receiver and transferred to your connected iPod/iPhone. When you connect your iPod to your computer, iTunes automatically presents songs in a new "Tagged" playlist so you can preview, purchase, and download them.
Note: In addition to HD AM/FM stations, the MEX-GS810BH can also receive conventional analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Pandora Internet Radio: The Sony MEX-GS810BH CD receiver lets you playback and control the Pandora Internet Radio music service that is being streamed to your Apple iPhone, Android smartphone, or BlackBerry. The Sony MEX-GS810BH will also display Artist, Album, & Song information provided by the Pandora app on your iPhone, Android, or BlackBerry smartphone. Your iPhone (iOS 5.0 or later) will need to be connected to the head unit's front-panel USB port with the latest version of the Pandora App from Apple's App Store. Your Android or BlackBerry smartphone must be connected via Bluetooth to the Sony MEX-GS810BH (no hard-wired connection required); your Bluetooth-enabled Android or BlackBerry smartphone must have the latest version of the Pandora App from the Android Market or the BlackBerry App World. Your Android or BlackBerry smartphone must also support A2DP, AVRCP, and SPP Bluetooth profiles. Your iPhone, Android, or BlackBerry smartphone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. In addition, you will need an active Pandora music service account. The Sony MEX-GS810BH provides the following control over the Pandora music service streamed to your USB-connected iPhone or Bluetooth-enabled Android or BlackBerry smartphone.

    • Station List: You can select Pandora stations from your Station List by date or alphabetically (A-Z).

Dynamic Reality Amp: The redesigned, internal Dynamic Reality Amp circuitry boasts 47% lower internal resistance compared to conventional in-dash receiver, delivering 55 watts x 4 channels of Peak power to your vehicle's speakers. This allows you to crank up the volume while maintaining low distortion, low noise levels, and smooth frequency response. The power output specs for the MEX-GS810BH are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 55 watts x 4-channels (220 total watts)

Note: The power specifications for the Sony MEX-GS810BH are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

6ch/5V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Sony MEX-GS810BH is equipped with 5-volt Front, Rear, & Sub pre-amp outputs giving you the ability to connect external amplifiers to your car stereo system. The unit's subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The subwoofer preamp output features a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the low-pass crossover. You can even adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

Note: You can connect a subwoofer to this head unit without the need of a separate power amplifier. Simply connect a single subwoofer (4-8 ohm) directly to head unit's left or right rear speaker leads (but not both). Same subwoofer controls apply.

High-Pass Filter: The front & rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the high-pass crossover.

Advanced Sound Engine: Sony's Advanced Sound Engine creates an ideal in-car sound field with digital signal processing. Advanced Sound Engine contains the following features: EQ10, ClearAudio+, Listening Position, Rear Bass Enhancer (RBE), Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE), Advanced Auto Volume (AAV), and Loudness.

    • EQ10 w/ ClearAudio+: R&B, Rock, Pop, Dance, Hip-Hop, Electronic, Jazz, Soul, Country, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom mode allows you to make your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of 10 different frequency bands - Band1 (32Hz), Band2 (63Hz), Band3 (125Hz), Band4 (250Hz), Band5 (500Hz), Band6 (1khz), Band7 (2khz), Band8 (4kHz), Band9 (8kHz), and Band10 (16kHz).
    • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far
    • Rear Bass Enhancer (RBE): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
    • Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE): DSEE improves digitally compressed music files by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process.
    • Advanced Auto Volume (AAV) + Loudness: This feature adjusts the playback volume level of all playback sources to the optimum level. Loudness reinforces bass and treble for clear sound at low volume levels.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face w/ Caution Alarm: The Sony MEX-GS810BH features a detachable face for theft prevention. If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the head unit's front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the unit's built-in amplifier is used. No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Dynamic Color Illuminator (35,000 colors): Dynamic Color Illuminator lets you match the head unit's LCD & button illumination to complement your existing vehicle lighting components. With selectable Sound Synchronization, the timing of the color change is synchronized with the audio source. You can select from 12 preset colors (red/amber/m-amber/yellow/white/light green/green/light blue/sky blue/blue/purple/pink), customized color (R-G-B), & 5 preset patterns (rainbow/ocean/sunset/forest/random). The unit's Dynamic Color Illuminator offers the following advance features.

    • Day/Night Color Mode: You can register a customize color for the unit's display and buttons for day & night time driving.
    • Sound Synchronization: The color changes according to synchronization of playing music. When you select a preset pattern sound synchronization becomes effective.
    • White Menu: You can display the menu more clearly (White text) without concern for the unit's other color settings.
    • Start White: When you power-on the head unit, the color of the unit's display and buttons turn white and then the color changes to your chosen customize color. You can enjoy this effect whenever the source is turned on.
Note: To change the brightness of the display you can set the MEX-GS810BH to one of three dimmer modes; Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), Dimmer Off (deactivates the dimmer), and Dimmer On (display always dim).

Auto Scroll: The Auto Scroll feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Source/Off button once will switch sources. Pressing and holding the Source/Off button for one second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. To turn the unit off completely, you must press and hold the Source/Off button for two seconds.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

Demo Mode: The head unit's demo mode can be turned On or Off.

    Remote Control

App Remote Technology: Sony's App Remote Technology offers two-way communication between the Sony MEX-GS810BH and your USB-connected iPhone (iOS 5+) or Bluetooth-paired Android smartphone (2.1-2.3 Froyo/Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0-4.2). You will need to download the free Sony App Remote application from the Apple App Store or the Google Play App Store. This application integrates compatible Apple iOS and Android apps into the selectable source list of the Sony CD receiver and lets you launch apps from the head unit. You can operate basic functionality of compatible audio apps directly from the receiver (operation differs depending on the app). Movie and navigation apps will continue to be controlled from your smartphone. In addition, you can control the receiver's sources directly from the application on your smartphone using simple finger gestures and see detailed source information on the phone's touchscreen.

    • Receiver Sources: The App Remote lets you access the head unit's Tuner (AM/FM), CD, iPhone, Bluetooth, and Aux sources from your phone's touchscreen. You can use finger gestures to tap, flick left/right, or flick up/down on the phone's touchscreen in order to change AM/FM Band, Play/Pause a track, Seek Up/Down a track or station, select a Preset, or access an Album. You will also be able to see song/artist information from MP3/WMA and smartphone sources, as well as station identification numbers from AM/FM radio.
    • Compatible Apps (as of 2/19/2014): The App Remote also provides various music, movie, and navigation apps which can be accesses from the Sony MEX-GS810BH's source list. Available operation differs depending on the application.
      • Music Apps: Music apps include; Pandora, AUPEO!, iHeartRadio, MOG, and TuneIn. The head unit only provides basic Play/Pause functions and no song/artist information for these music apps.
      • Movie Apps: Movie apps include Netflix and YouTube. Video will be displayed on your smartphone's screen, while the audio plays through your vehicle's speakers. You can control Play/Pause from the MEX-GS810BH. Other playback functions will need to done on your smartphone. Subscription may be required. You should not watch videos while your vehicle is in motion.
      • Navigation Apps: Supported navigation apps include Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, and MotionX GPS Drive. The map screen will display on your smartphone's touchscreen, while audible directions can be heard through your vehicle's speakers. You can continue to listen to music streamed from your smartphone while navigating; the unit will attenuate your music during a navigation voice-prompt. Control of the navigation apps will still be done through your smartphone's touchscreen. Fees may apply for some navigation apps & functions.
    • Voice Communication + Notification Readout (Android only): Exclusive to Android devices, App Remote technology for the MEX-GS810BH head unit adds a voice user interface for voice control of apps and functions such as navigation and music playback, notification readouts including RSS feeds, Twitter, and text message reply. Through voice operation, you can safely and comfortably operate your smartphone in the car from the Sony MEX-GS810BH CD receiver. Incoming SMS/E-mail and Twitter/Facebook/Calendar notifications are automatically read aloud through the MEX-GS810BH and your vehicle's speakers to keep you in touch.
    • Custom Sound Settings: From your Android smartphone remote screen, you get access to audio & DSP settings (Equalizer, Volume Control, Fader/Balance/Subwoofer, and Listening Position).
Note: Access to the music, movie, and navigation apps will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Wireless Remote Control: The head unit comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X231) for easy operation. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions (not Bluetooth) of the Sony head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.

Yes, your radio is defective, I installed my radio and jammed the rear USB through the windshield defrost vent. not sure about the crossover stuff but I can tell you this unit sucks, if I could I would return it and purchase a different unit. Crutchfield will not let me review my purchase after emailing them. I would give this unit 1 star. There's definitely better stuff out there, especially for the price. [ DUGAN  Aug 03, 2015 ]
This is a complex question best answered by looking at pg 18 and 19 of the user manual. There is extensive customization available. [ THOMAS  Aug 01, 2015 ]

when listening to the radio you push the tag button which stores it on the head unit. then when you connect with a internet capable device you can view all the songs you've tagged [ BOBBY  Jul 31, 2015 ]
To change display items press and hold DSPL, then press it again to change as follows: Channel Number (Default) Channel Name Artist Name Song Title Content Info Category Name Clock [ Ray  Jul 31, 2015 ]
You are referring to something called Program Service Data, which shows the song name, artist, station ID, etc. It only works with certain stations. To find out if you have them in your area, go to the hdradio web site. The function is automatic when the TUNER is selected. I use mine almost exclusively to listen to .mp3 files connected to the rear USB connector from an external drive in the glove box. Good luck! [ Stephen  Jul 31, 2015 ]
I don't know about the ipold connectivity. It does the same thing with me iPhone, but I HAVE NO MUSIC ON MY PHONE. I put all of my music on a 64 gig USB thumb drive and have it plugged into USB2, in the center console of my car. That works pretty perfectly except for some of my albums are lossless, so th efiles are HUGE, and it sometimes won't navigate off those albums well. Music compressed a little, slightly smaller file sizes, it navigates slow, but just fine. I have 500 albums on their - no need for any other connection type. [ MICHAEL J  Jul 26, 2015 ]

I have not tried.. I have used the unit just to play MP3. Sorry [ GIANPAOLO  Jul 23, 2015 ]
I Have not been able to play with a thunb drive yet. This unit only plays certain files. I'm still adding to my system and will follow up on this topic whem addressed later. [ GLEN  Jul 18, 2015 ]
Norman, One is the mike for the phone and the other is a 2.0 USB. I couldn't thread the USB through the dash so I just balled it up behind the unit. Remove the mike, it plugs in, the USB is hard wired and can't be removed. [ Don  Jun 08, 2015 ]
It can be removed, or you can just leave it behind your dash. I find it useful to have two but it's not necessary. [ Andrew  Jun 08, 2015 ]
One is the USB and my installer simply put it in the glove compartment from the rear . don't know about the other wire [ Howard  Jun 08, 2015 ]
The other is a microphone. It is a normal 3.5mm mic plug so yes, you can unplug it. Obviously, the deck just can't pick up your voice then. [ KWONG  Jun 07, 2015 ]
The USB wire is mainly used for of your going to install like a touch screen into your vehicle and the other wire i never did figure out what it was there for but both were completely ignored when installed into my truck Also there might be a few extra wires (mine were 1 black 1 grew and 1 black and grew) that seem like thay dont go to anything but there are a few wires they do connect to and if they are not connected properly will pop a few fuses Hope this helps [ Jennifer  Jun 07, 2015 ]
I've had mine in my 01 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup for about six weeks now and I've had a little trouble with the display but only when glare from indirect sunlight hits the front. If sunlight hits it directly, the display is easily readable and the display takes on a negative LCD effect. This may be because I choose to keep the display in dimmed mode because I haven't yet chosen between the auto dimming feature and the manual dimmer control from the truck's interior light dimmer. The glare issue is negligible and only happens infrequently. With a convertible, you may actually have even less of an issue as long as you keep the display on full brightness. Hope this helps. [ Sherman  Feb 10, 2015 ]
I don't have the unit installed in a convertible but it is plenty bright with all the selectable colors. I don't have a problem seeing it here in sunny AZ. [ wayne  Feb 09, 2015 ]
No I have not had an issues with reading the display during the day or at anytime regarding the Sony MEX. Tom L. [ Debra  Feb 09, 2015 ]
I've had it for about a month and haven't had an issue seeing the display in sunlight (although it is only winter). I can't see it when I'm wearing sunglasses, but that's more or less expected. [ Adam  Feb 09, 2015 ]
Hi Fred, The display is very bright. I don't think you will have an issue with brightness with the Sony. I've read those JVC comments too, and took a look at a couple in the local stereo store and they are significantly more dim than the Sony. Hope this helps, Russ [ Russell  Feb 09, 2015 ]
My unit is installed in a coupe, so we don't have a problem with the car interior being brightly illuminated. I have not noticed any particular difficulty in reading the display. I do have the display set to dim as opposed to bright as their isn't a way (from what I have been told) to have the unit dim when the car headlights are on. You may want to check your display setting to see if it is set on dim as opposed to bright. [ Toyonal  Feb 09, 2015 ]
Fred, I'm very happy with my product. I have not had any problems reading the display. [ RUBEN  Feb 08, 2015 ]
We just installed the sony unit into a 2004 VW new beetle. It is a hatchback but the bug has lots of glass and light in the passnger area. The readability of the display greatly depends on the color you select on the display. After trying many different colors, we settled on a teal green/blue color. White would also work in the day but it seems too bright for night driving. The unit has an auto night feature which does dim the display slightly. [ Kevin  Feb 08, 2015 ]
I have this unit in a truck and have never had a problem with it not being bright enough. You can change the color to just about any color for the display so you might be able to find a color that's easier to see when it is bright [ Brad  Feb 08, 2015 ]
Don't know I put this in a 2004 ram 1500. If I turn the head lights on in the day time I cant read the display. (I do not have automatic lights on a 2004 ram) [ Craig  Feb 08, 2015 ]
Hi Fred, I have the unit set to the 'dim' mode and it is still easily read during daylight. [ Rupert  Feb 08, 2015 ]
It's not the brightest unit I've seen but I have had no problems. It has a built in dimmer setting to dim when the headlights are on, but I disabled that. Also, you can pick from many colors for the display. I chose a variant of green and can read it in any light. Really, the only negative thing about this unit to me is the forward/back buttons. They are (to me) a little oddly shaped and took some time to adjust to (changing tracks without actually looking at the radio)... [ Benjamin  Feb 08, 2015 ]
I have had no problems with reading the display the day time. [ JAMES M  Feb 08, 2015 ]
I do not have a convertible, but between the ability to adjust the brightness and colors, I think this unit has as good a chance as any as being visible. Mine is in a truck, and I have intentionally lowered the brightness because it was so bright. Hope this helps. [ Stuart  Feb 08, 2015 ]
You can correctly read the display this stereo is way better than any of the jvcs offered [ nicholas  Feb 08, 2015 ]
Lisa- I just installed this in my wifes car. After installing it, I ran a number of errands to different places, starting and stopping the car. When a call came in on the way home after all the starts and stops- it went to the head unit- so it remembers your phone. What I think is the behavior is that you have to pair the head unit to a specific phone and it sticks to that one phone. So when my wife jumped into the car -it did not automatically pair to her phone. She needed to pair it back to her phone again. [ JONATHAN  Jan 30, 2015 ]
Not true, the unit allows a Bluetooth pairing without the use of a USB cable. I have an iPhone 5s and my wife has an iPhone 6, after the initial Bluetooth pairing using the unit menu function, both phones automatically connect when the unit turns-on. [ Mike  Jan 29, 2015 ]
My iPad paired using the normal Bluetooth pairing, no cable required, even for the initial pairing. Connects automatically upon starting my car. YMMV with an iPhone, but I'd think all iOS 8.1 devices would behave similarly. [ John  Jan 28, 2015 ]
Yes, it will only function with an iPhone when attached by USB. I do not recommend this stereo. The receiver buttons frequently stop responding. The hands free phone connection does not work. It's a complicated system to learn, but after communicating with Sony tech support, they said it is not functioning properly. I always liked Sony in the past but I would stay away from this model. [ Michael  Jan 28, 2015 ]
I do not have an iPhone, however with my Samsung Galaxy IIIS I do not have to pair it each time, it automatically connects with Bluetooth. [ Dana  Jan 27, 2015 ]
    Mine automatically pairs. [ TYLER  Jan 27, 2015 ]
Not true. My unit pairs wirelessly automatically each time I enter the vehicle. However, the deck cannot be paired with more than one device at a time, so if another device pairs in between your last pairing and current attempt, you may have to go through the menu and pair again. [ Matthew  Jan 27, 2015 ]
You do not need the USB cable to pair you're device's. I do have to re-pair my devices each day, but i bring my devices in the house each night. I just downloaded the sony app on my note 3 so I'll see if it will be 1 touch pairing. Kev [ Kevin  Jan 27, 2015 ]
I don't have an iPhone but I do have an Android. First SET PAIRING to sync the phone to the Sony. Then go to SET BT SIGNAL and sync the phone with the Sony unit there. Once the phone is recognizes there, then the phone should be recognize every time the Sony unit is turned on. That's what I did and works now. I did have to perform SET BT SIGNAL 2 or 3 times but now it works like it should. [ John  Jan 27, 2015 ]
It will automatically pair, the first time you should use the USB. [ Richard  Jan 27, 2015 ]
HI. On the remoteis a display button that with cycle through different information on the screen, one is the clock . Give it time between pushing the button the display. I [ GLEN  Sep 01, 2015 ]
Press and HOLD the menu key to change / revolve through the various displays. I believe there are four. [ LAURENCE  Jan 29, 2015 ]
Hi Robert, have you tried to press the DISP button on either the remote or the radio? I had a track playing using the usb stick and I was able to see the clock on the radio. [ GIANPAOLO  Jan 27, 2015 ]
Yea, good one, and I figured it out......Just push the MENU button down, cycle thru the views and it will show up. [ Henry  Jan 27, 2015 ]
It is VERY simple to do. While playing music, just HOLD the Menu key (the leftmost key under the display) until the display changes... then you can just repeatedly press and release the Menu key to rotate between all the display modes. One of those modes has the Source displayed on the left and the Clock displayed on the right. It stays in that display mode until you change it again even if you turn car off and back on. I just tested this on mine and it works perfectly as I stated above! [ KWONG  Jan 27, 2015 ]
The menu button doubles as the display button. Should be the first button on your left under the display. Hold it in to change the display. The display layouts on this deck are rather pitiful I MO. Hope this helps. [ Brian  Jan 27, 2015 ]
My son uses this with his iPhone 5S and the Bluetooth links and works well for calls. I cannot say whether it would be fully compatible with a 6 via the usb port though. He does connect his new iPod nano to it through the usb and he says it works well. [ MATTHEW M  Dec 29, 2014 ]
The BT works great with my Android so it should work with your iPhone [ Don  Dec 27, 2014 ]
it should. just need to connect your USB cable directly in to the head unit. [ GIANPAOLO  Dec 27, 2014 ]
It works well with my Samsung Galaxy S 5 and is the best sounding receiver I have ever owned. The HD radio function is also a plus. [ Howard  Dec 26, 2014 ]
    Thank you. I appreciate the info. [ Matt  Dec 06, 2014 ]
They are currently 2.0, there would be no need for 3.0 as there is nothing larger then audio tracks ever being transmitted through a USB device. [ Michael  Dec 04, 2014 ]
I Have not installed my Sony yet. I would bet they are 2.0. [ Kevin  Dec 03, 2014 ]
Hello Trevor, I bought this unit for my son but yes there is an option to have the unit display the clock under normal operation. In other words, whenever you are actively making an adjustment the clock will appear. By the way, my son is very happy with the overall features of the unit although I don't think he has figured all of them out yet. However he has tested the Bluetooth calling feature to his iPhone and it works as well as the factory unit in my Infiniti. Good luck with your purchase!! Matt [ MATTHEW M  Nov 27, 2014 ]
The clock seems to only work when the unit is off. It is annoying not to have a clock on all the time. I have the same problem as you do! [ Henry  Nov 26, 2014 ]
Sorry, but l have a display clock in my car, so I didn't bother with the radio clock. [ David  Nov 22, 2014 ]
Pushing the Menu/Display button for about two seconds will usually display the clock. Have you tried the Sony Remote App? I have not been able to use the App because I have an earlier OS on my phone. I am hoping that I can make it display full time by using the App on my new phone. [ Don  Nov 22, 2014 ]
    Yes it does [ Brent  Nov 22, 2014 ]
Yes, it sort of does, when playing radio it stays on, but reading from the memory stick not so much, but you can get it to with some work. My old radio was my clock so setting the clock to always on was the 1st thing I did. Note: hardware wise the thing is awesome, everything you could ask for, but software is pretty weak. Getting song titles, clock, and RDS to display properly is a real pain and I still haven't been able to retrieve my itunes tags, you can tag with 1 button but with an Android it may not be possible to retrieve those tags. I also got a pioneer for my girlfriend and it looks a lot better, much more intuitive but personally I wouldn't trade in my Sony. [ Michael  Nov 22, 2014 ]
Yes, there are three different display options, and one of them is band and clock a.e. AM1 5:02 NICE unit with the HD receiver and the BT works in my ragtop Jeep Wrangler (Top up). Still a noisy environment. [ LAURENCE  Nov 22, 2014 ]
I believe there is the option to do so. It is always on when the system is in off position and car is running. I am very impressed with this unit fyi. Thank you. [ Kirk  Nov 22, 2014 ]
If the stereo is off, you get the clock by default. When it is on, you can set the display to show the clock, but then you miss out on some of the song info. But the answer to your question is yes, you can set the time to display all the time. [ KWONG  Nov 22, 2014 ]
