Our take on the Sony CDX-GT100

Just because Sony built the CDX-GT100 CD player for great sound doesn't mean they let style fall by the wayside. In fact, the stereo's sleek, futuristic look and gun-metal gray finish offer the perfect complement to its high-powered internal amp — all with a sub-$100 price tag. The detachable faceplate even features a blue LED display that's easy to see from just about any angle, day or night.

On the audio side, you get treble, bass, and midrange controls, along with seven preset tone curves for tweaking the sound. The preamp outputs can be switched to subwoofer mode, activating a low-pass filter and bass level control — ideal for controlling a powered sub in your system. And you get a front panel input that's just waiting for your portable audio player.

Features
Note

Features

Drive S: The CDX-GT100 features the Drive S chassis platform. Drive S includes the CD mechanism, audio stages, 12 V power supply, and tuner section. The CD mechanism includes a suspension to resist shocks, a motor that draws less power, and a fast low-current pickup that improves durability and CD playback accuracy. The 52W x 4 S-MOSFET Power IC produces clearer, more accurate sound, less distortion, and a higher signal-to-noise ratio than previous designs.

EQ3: You may select one of the following EQ presets: Xplod, Vocal, Club, Jazz, New Age, Rock, or Custom. For each preset, you can adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz (Low), 1 kHz (Mid), and 10 kHz (High). The level of each frequency can be adjusted from +10 dB to -10 dB in 1 dB increments.

Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the best signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency.

Rear/Subwoofer Preamp Outputs: The CDX-GT100 has a set of preamp outputs that can be set for Rear or Subwoofer output. When Subwoofer is selected, the outputs have a selectable low-pass filter (78 Hz, 125 Hz, or Off) and the output level is user-adjustable.

Front Panel Auxiliary Input: A front panel stereo 3.5mm minijack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable cassette, MD or MP3 player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

45-Degree Installation: For flexibility of installation, this unit can be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 45 degrees.

Note

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Note: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you must turn the radio completely off (this defeats keyed operation), or you may wire the accessory power wire of this radio to an alternate source of accessory power to retain keyed clock and face/button illumination operation.

Fair CD Player

Written By Blair, Oxford, NC on Friday, July 14, 2006

I installed this deck into a 1994 Nissan Sentra 4door. It played flawlessy, skippy only once or twice on very rough terrain. 6 months later, I was involved in an accident that totalled my Nissan. I kept the deck and sony xplod speakers. All are still fully functional.

Pros
-handy input jack on the front
-reliable cd player with skip protection
-plenty of power (17w RMS) for most speakers
-user friendly controls and simple to use while
driving, without taking eyes off the road
-bright, easy to read display in night and day
Cons
-no mp3 playing (its worth the 30 more bucks for
the use of mp3s and a remote on higher model)
-not man functions (compared to pioneers and
JVC's owned by some of my friends
-not the best quality reputaion with song xplod
products.

Conclusion

This is an alright CD player to upgrade from stock with. But in my opinion, its worth the 30 or 40 more bucks to buy a Pioneers deck with many more audio options, or at least the stepped up version of this deck with mp3 playback and wireless remote.

Decent

Written By billy, Mobile, AL on Wednesday, May 10, 2006

This is a good headunit if you are just getting into the car audio hobby. I bought it for the very convienient aux input on the front, which is a WHOLEEE lot better than runnin an ipod cord thru your dash. This is a very basic headunit though, with decent power and sound for the price. The bottom line is if you arent plannin on spendin alot of money on your system, this is the headunit for you. I however, am planning on putting even more money into my system, and buying either a dvd player, or headunit with digital display.

Good unit

Written By abueter, Denver, CO on Tuesday, April 25, 2006

This is a good unit; I installed it into my Subaru and was impressed on how easy it fit in along with the handy wiring harness Crutchfield sent. It was an easy matter of connecting the Sony harness to the supplied Subaru harness. Good pricing for the value of the unit; I like the Aux input and how it's set up on the faceplate panel. No problems with the install, I did call tech support; great service, good pricing- what more can you ask for! I'd buy from Crutchfield again, and I recommend this unit.

So far so good

Written By mrfr33z3, Melbourne, FL on Friday, April 07, 2006

I'm very pleased with this unit. For the money I spent, the features and usability of this unit make this a great value. The controls are intuitive, and the wife, even though she can be a bit of an "e-tard" (technically challenged) at times, she's been using it in her car without issue! Beats the heck out of the tape deck adaptor/portable CD player hooked up to the cig lighter!

I too, purchased this unit due to the price and the inclusion of an AUX port on the front. I dread the day I run across the issue that another customer has experienced with the AUX port, but I'll try to be more careful with mine! :) (no offense)

Almost Perfect BUT...

Written By MatH, Alcoa, TN on Friday, March 10, 2006

I've encountered one problem with this receiver. And unfortunately it's quite major. The problem is the AUX input on the face of the receiver. The entire purpose of me purchasing this receiver was for the aux input on the front, as I didn't want to have one on the back and have a longer cord running through my dash, etc. I want to leave my cd's at home and have my iPod hooked up to it, saving me time, space, blah blah. For the first month or so, it worked beautifully. Sounded awesome, no problems. It was everything I wanted it to be. Then out of the blue one day the left side cuts in and out throughout my entire vehicle. I jiggle the input and it comes back on but still cuts out. I get back home and dissect the face of the receiver to find that the aux input is actually on a entirely seperate motherboard by itself in the bottom right corner, and the only thing connecting it to the major circuitry is 2 wires. One for right, one for left. This is all fine and everything until you take into account that the AUX input's mechanism/board/whatever is not properly anchored to the frame of the face, leaving it to move almost freely, causing the left and right wires to come off of the circuitry. Anyways, the left one had came off of its soldering. I decided it was too small for me to do myself, so I took it back and got another one exactly the same. And of course, it's been about a month or so and guess what?!? You guessed it. The left is starting to cut out. I would second guess myself and think maybe I'm mistreating these things, but I really just leave the cord plugged into the face and only fool with the other end (ipod end). I'm out of room. BEWARE

Sony has really Stepped up to create an exceptional value head unit.

Written By Tracy, Charleston, WV on Thursday, January 19, 2006

We purchased this head unit as low cost replacement to a failing factory radio. The price was right in line with all of the other value head units on the market, but the addition of a front mount AUX port and MP3 CD support sealed the deal.

To our surprise, this Sony unit's onboard power amplifier is comparable to units costing twice as much. We easily pushed our set of replacement MTX coaxial speakers to a 95% volume level without distortion, artifacting or clipping.

Further adding to the excellent tuneability of this unit is the build in, rudimentary 3 band EQ. Although there are several pre-set EQ adjustments, the "custom" setting allows you to set Low, Mid and High pass equalization in 1db increments.

Overall fit and finish of this unit is excellent, and again seem to have been targeted to a higher price point. In short, you are purchasing a $200+ head unit without the fancy display.

Easy to use, sounds great, iPod compatible

Written By Pat, Charlotte, NC on Tuesday, January 10, 2006

I bought this for my 2001 Altima because I wanted to listen to my iPod in the car on my commute to work. I had read up on different methods to connect the iPod up (FM Modulator, Control Interface, etc.), and I decided to get a new head unit with an AUX adapter. Having the adapter in the front is very convienient, but I wish that I had one in the back as well. I have a mess of cords hanging around now, and I need to figure out how to hide them. The sound quality on this unit far exceeds my OEM CD player. Sound on the AUX jack is crisp and doesn't degrade if you use the iPod's built in ports or change the volume on the iPod. The only complaint I have with this unit is that the display doesn't really show too much. You can pick either the current time or info on whatever source is selected. If you have a CD in it will show track and time, if you have the radio on it will show the station, if you have AUX it will just say AUX. I wish it would show both, but I'm not going to be picky. It was an inexpensive player and it does exactly what I want it to do. Buying from Crutchfield was great, the instructions were simple and I like DIY projects. Highly recommended!!

Sony CDX-GT100

Written By frederick, Ohio on Saturday, November 26, 2005

Unit is a simple and elegant. The front Auxillary port was the primary reason for my purchase. Auxillary port works great, volume level is right in check with rest of system and the built in EQ helps correct anything my MP3 player throws at it. Using it with an iPod, I am very happy with how it handles the audio. CD playback is excellent, very clear, controls are easy to navigate. FM/AM is clear and able to lock on to stations. Rear Aux ouput is easy to setup, epecially like the built in level control, currently using to power rear subwoofer. Although a basic unit, is so far has truned out to hold its weight against pricer units.

Only two complaints, their is no pause or mute button on this model, and although the display has adjustable brightness, the lowest setting is rather bright for night-time driving. Otherwise the unit lives up to the specs on the box.
