Replace your car's factory speakers with these Sony Xplōd GT Series speakers, and you'll hear the full impact of your music, along with lots of little details you may not have heard before.

The XS-GT1627A 6-1/2" speakers feature woofer cones made from Highly Oriented Polyolefine, a lightweight material developed by Sony that's especially rigid and strong. Sony reinforces these cones with the same Aramid fibers that are used in bulletproof vests, so they'll stand up to high-volume playback. Each speaker features a 1-7/16" balanced dome tweeter that reproduces lively high notes and adds presence to the instruments and vocals. Sony includes cool-looking grilles if you're not going to use the grilles that came in your vehicle.

After taking my 2000 Jetta to a local installer and being quoted $650.00 to replace 4 speakers... I Purchased these speakers online at Crutchfield.com. They were here in a day and installed in less than an hour and a half... Really liked the fact that the installation kit was included.

Pros: Quality sound for the money, and installation kit included

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers replaced the original front door speakers in my 2004 Chevy Silverado which had gone bad. The Sony speakers sound-wise are about average. The removal/installation instructions were okay, but it was extremely helpful that I had already watched a You Tube video on Chevy Silverado door panel removal and re-installation. This is especially true since releasing the clip on the power window switch connector is not easy. The speaker adapters and connecting wires, plus their instructions, were excellent. Overall I consider this a very good buy.

Sony XplodT XS-GT1627A for 2000 Civic

Pat from West Chester, PA on 11/13/2012

Speakers are excellent, however, installation instructions on webpage & shipped instrucs are WAY off-base for my 2000 base Civic. Instead of merely having to cut out back of plastic door cups per the instructions, installation in front doors required far more extensive modifications--think Sawzall cutting much of plastic mount and some metal door parts, then having to fold back speaker mounting tabs & finally drilling all new screw holes. This notwithstanding, the help of techs was invaluable throughout the process, even to the extent of assuring me that if I butchered the speakers doing the modifications they would take them back. When all was said & done, the speakers sound great for an inexpensive upgrade.

Pros: Great sound for an inexpensive upgrade; outstanding help from Crutchfield techs.

Cons: Beware if you have a 2000 or thereabouts Honda Civic.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed four of these Sony speakers in my minivan to replace the factory speakers hoping they'd have some stupendous effect on the new Sony receiver's sound but they were pretty much an even swap sound-wise, maybe just a tad tinnier. The quality and price of the speakers is very good and they were easy enough to install ... once the vehicle interior was pulled apart of course! :-)

Pros: Solid speakers with good response across the board, light in the bass area.

Cons: See pros.

2000 Dodge Intrepid
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the Sony X-plod ('explode") model XS-GT1627A to replace the cracked door speakers in my 2000 Dodge Intrepid which came with a JBL-Infinity sound system (the window sticker bragged "9 Loudspeakers in 7 Locations".) I read all the reviews of speakers under $100 that would fit my car, and the Xplods work GREAT, mostly because they only get lower-midrange from the Infinity amplifier. (Okay, so the Xplods have Hi-Frequency Tweeters that I don't use. Big deal! But I get Sony quality and Crutchfield Support at a fantastic price.) Several reviews said the Xplods didn't have much bass. That could be due to the mounting. If the circumference of the speaker is not sealed, you get a "blow-by" effect, where negative soundwaves come around the speaker and cancel-out the positive soundwaves. The Adaptor Mounting Rings do not seal very well. I used a putty to fill any cracks between the speaker and the door. BTW: My car's Infinity sound system includes a gut-thumping subwoofer in the rear which is plenty for me, and I listen to a lot of Electronic Dance Music from CD's an from Sirius Satellite Radio.

Pros: Great Price, Sony ruggedness, and Crutchfield Support that included free adapter Mounting Rings and adapter cables to fit my car.

Cons: The necessary Adapter Mounting Rings were not easy to adapt. The Inifinity speakers have an oddball mounting configuration, so I had to hacksaw about a half inch of one tab of each Adapter Ring, and file another hole a little larger. But that's my car. Perhaps your car will be easier to adapt. ALSO: I recommend a sealing putty that can withsteand the heat of a parked car in the hot sun.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in our 2001 Dakota Quad Cab w/Infinity System. Much better than the worn out original Infinity's, even though they require you to turn up the volume somewhat louder due to the 4 ohm impedance of the new speakers (compared to 2 ohm of the originals). I plan on adding a powered sub to round out the upgrade.

Pros: Much better than original Infinity's.

Cons: Requires a little more volume and really needs a powered sub to fill out the sound.

Dont get these

donkeybat46 from Indiana on 5/7/2012

Got these to replace stock speakers on 2004 toyota rav4. The stock speakers were working fine and I had no problems with them, but I saw this on sale and thought id try it out. They cant sound worse than stock speakers, right? RIGHT? So a friend and I installed these in two hours, to be honest they sound terrible. the stock speakers sounded better AND had more bass with only PAPER cones. Unbelievable, how is it that paper toyota branded speakers sound better than these after market speakers?! I've only played them for an hour, maybe I should let them "break in" but as of right now they sound terrible. These speakers are bad and sony should feel bad for making them. I RECOMMEND getting these only if your speakers are destroyed and you need new speakers. I would recommend getting this only if you can get it for $10 or less a pair.

Pros: installation was straightforward

Cons: sounds worse than the speakers I made in science class with two paper plates, spring and a magnet.

Armen from Charlotte, NC on 7/2/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently bought and installed the Sony Xplod 6 1/2" speakers in the front of my 2003 Toyota 4Runner. Directions on installation were excellent, and the tool I bought to pop off the door panel was well worth the $10. On the speakers, I'd have to rate them a 3.8 out of 5 stars. They do sound a bit cleaner and crisper than the 6x9 factory speakers they replaced -- but not that much better, and the old 6x9s seemed to be more powerful. However, all in all I'd have to give the product and Crutchfield four stars, maybe 4.2. They're worth $50, and in retrospect, perhaps I should have purchased a better line of speaker to make the difference I was hoping for.

Mike C from Glendale, Az on 5/31/2011

My stock speakers in my '99 Jeep Cherokee were working fine when I parked my Jeep 5 years ago, as were the two 12" subs.. When I pulled it out of storage last year, the stereo still worked fine but, one by one, the speakers started to fail. I was down to the right front stock speaker and two 12" subs.......My system sounded horrible!!!!! I decided to upgrade through Crutchfield. I went on the website and searched for speakers for my vehicle. It was straight to the point and gave me the speakers that fit my Jeep. I chose the Sony Xplod speakers, front and rear, as economical replacements. The installation was very easy thanks to the wiring harnesses supplied by Crutchfield. The resulting sound is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!! Before, I could hear more bass than anything because of the amp and two 12" subs in the back, but now I can hear all the mids and highs over the heart skipping bass that I already had. These are great stock speaker replacements for the price!!!!!!!! THANKS CRUTCHFIELD!!!!!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

chosen for price, not for sound quality, decided to return them :( i installed the speakers and immediately i notice an absolute lack of bass compared to stock. i put the stock speakers back in one side and the side with stock sounded WAY better. the only advantage over stock speakers i see in these is that they have independant tweeters, where i DID notice distinctively louder and clearer highs, which can easily be remedied by a seperately mounted tweeter, but the mids sounded the same and the lows were a bummer. i think these may be good speakers for the budget minded who do not get nearly as concerned about the low end freqs, but if you listen to anything with bass, go with something in a higher price range that will reproduce those freqs better. 2011 Xterra

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put these speakers into the rear doors of my 99 Nissan Pathdinder. They put out a pretty good amount of bass for their size, but they don't sound quite as clear as the Polk db651s speakers in my front doors. This doesn't bother me as I was really looking to just replace the stock speakers and wanted some thump but not break my budget. All in all, decent speakers for the price. One thing to note: If you're installing these in a 99 Pathy (not the 99.5 or newer), the included brackets from Crutchfield won't fit. They didn't match at all with the mount holes in my door. However, unlike the Polk db651s speakers, they will line up with the holes of the stock mounting plastic on the Pathy door quite easily. All I had to do was cut off the plastic peg that sticks out from the stock mount.
